I’ve been dealing with a lot of anger lately. Anger pushed down so deep it took giant upheavals in my life to unearth it. Anger so big it could swallow me whole. A lot of it revolves around being silenced: through aggression, through shame, through someone explaining things to me who is in veritably older and more affluent. A deep undertone of how dare you be larger than one woman or honest or speak with authority. And a lot of what I thought was sadness or anxiety is actually rage, as hot as a flash fire. 

I’ve been thinking with some reflection on the beginning lines of the Iliad:

“Rage - Goddess, sing the rage of Peleus’ son Achilles,
murderous, doomed, that cost the Achaeans countless losses,
hurling down to the House of Death so many sturdy souls,
great fighters’ souls, but made their bodies carrion,
feasts for the dogs and birds.” 

And I look down at my right arm and close my eyes and take a deep breath. Of course as far as I recall no one interrupted Achilles when he was in the middle of a sentence.

I’m really interested in other people’s experiences. Do you have this kind of anger? Have you found a productive home for it in your life?
