Peter Capaldi’s Feelings & More on Doctor Who Series 9
Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
As part of the promotion for Doctor Who Series 9, here’s Peter Capaldi discussing the new run of episodes, what the viewers can expect, and where the Doctor is now…
Coming back to film your second series, how has the atmosphere been on set?
It’s been lovely to be back and everything’s been very positive. I think everyone’s been happy to be on set in Cardiff and the scripts are very good and strong. Everyone’s become enthused with the spirit of adventure that runs through the scripts, it’s been exciting!
How are you feeling about this new series? What can viewers expect?
I think they’ll find a lot of thrills, lot of mystery, a reckless Doctor in pursuit of adventure. It’s very thrill aired, hopefully full of spectacle and adventure – it’s not a sitting back, domesticated, reflective series, it’s the Doctor and Clara roaring through time and space in search of thrills. So I think it’s great, it should be a fun watch for audiences at home.
Can you tell us about the opening episode?
The opening episode of the new series is fabulous – the story is going to take us across the Universe in to all types of dark, terrifying and funny places. It’s a particular epic one to start, with lots of old favourites, Missy and the Daleks are returning and particularly for those who are nostalgic with the Daleks of the 60s, there are some special surprises in store.
Has the TARDIS changed?
There’s been a few changes in the TARDIS. As we came to know my Doctor a little bit more, we needed to reflect that more in the environment that he lived in. I don’t think my Doctor fits in with the whole idea of Edwardian time traveller, there’s a kind of resurge of that in the look of the TARDIS as it was, so I wanted to make it a little sharper. There are a few more elegant, 60s, classic design things knocking around, as opposed to Edwardian or Victorian.
How has the dynamic changed between the Doctor and Clara since series 8?
I think the Doctor and Clara are really having a good time. They’ve had some conflicts and challenges, but generally if you can weather the storms, you often find that your relationship is much stronger. That’s certainly the case with the Doctor and Clara.
They’re very bonded, they’re like a little gang. The Doctor has realised that he’s 2,000 years old and life is short, he wants to enjoy himself and enjoy having Clara around. She’s very good at trying to help him. He’s still rather impatient with human beings, which some people take as being socially inept, but he just can’t be bothered with them, he has better things to do. But she helps him a lot more, she tries to improve his manners and social skills. But they are very deeply bonded. It’s a very curious relationship, it doesn’t really have an equivalent in television. It’s a non-romantic, but deeply bonded pairing which is strangely full of affection, more deeply felt than simple romantic relationships.
What is his relationship like with Missy in the opening episodes?
I wouldn’t say their relationship has changed since he saw her last. Missy’s role is slightly different, but you’ll have to wait and see!
With a wealth of different sets and filming days on locations, would you say they enhance the look and feel of the episodes?
I think the design of the show is always really, really important – it gives a great cinematic feel to the show. It expands it, makes it not simply domestic, but quite cosmic and big. It’s good to have spectacular sets and locations, because it adds more physical texture to the show and opens it up more, it’s all pretty cinematic.
Have you got any favourite moments from playing the Doctor?
For me, obviously to get to play the Doctor, the whole things is a delight. Some of my favourite moments are when we reveal something of the Doctor’s more alien nature. For instance, in Kill The Moon when he’s able to look into time and read it, and communicate that, I think that was fun to do.
What was it like to battle Daleks from the different decades in episode 2? Any favourites?
I don’t have a particular favourite, but I do like to see the little old ones, they’re very sweet as they’re quite small. But actually they’re still strangely brutal, nasty little pieces of work, but are rather handsome and classy. They were great fun and do what is expected of them, you get a whole group of them together in the opening episode. I think we had about 20 of them in the studio so that was very exciting. Once you had them all moving, it was very funny watching Hettie (Macdonald) directing them, because she was directing them like actors – ‘you’re getting upset at this moment, have a look at your friends’ – and they’d look at their friends and then she’d say – ‘you need to look nervous now’ – and they’d actually be able to convey nervousness – it was actually very, very clever. It was like being in a Dalek theme park, with a free ticket, so that was fun.
Doctor Who Series 9 kicks off on September 19th on BBC One and BBC America.

What Do the Doctor Who Producers Think of Maisie Williams?
Billy Garratt-John is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
In the most recent snippet for the YouTube/BBC Online teaser series Ask The Execs…, show-runner Steven Moffat and producer Brian Minchin answered a question relating to Maisie Williams’ part in the upcoming series.
Clearly adopting a tactic that Moffat has perfected over recent years (what I like to call, the “I couldn’t possibly comment”-responce), the pair spoke about her casting and revealed it was Minchin’s idea to approach Williams.
“I mean obviously I’d seen her in Game of Thrones, but what really blew me away was a film created for Channel 4 called Cyberbully. And it was just Maisie on screen for about 80-minutes(…)and it was just captivating.”
A character penned by Moffat in the upcoming so-called two parter The Girl Who Died and The Woman Who Lived inspired Minchin to contact Williams.
“It just gelled and we watched all of her stuff and were delighted when she said yes!”
Clearly, the age divide between Williams’ and Capaldi, and their apparent on-screen chemistry really excites the producers. As Moffat goes on to say;
“It’s like a grand old Victorian actor acting opposite a YouTuber. It’s like all of entertainment is bound by the two of them!”
A lovely sentiment. Let’s just hope it translates on our telly boxes, and doesn’t bring back memories of John Nathan-Turner’s many attempts at stunt casting during his tenure as producer. Given the massive push on social media to alert fans of both Doctor Who and the smash-hit Game of Thrones, it’s clear they’re parading Maisie as a key guest character for the season. To me, it has come across as a little desperate. The Doctor Who Twitter page looks to have been waving its little hands in the air yelling, “LOOK AT US! LOOK – LOOK WHAT’S HAPPENING! WE’VE GOT ANOTHER POP CULTURE ICON HERE, TOO!”. I don’t know. It’s all a bit cynical to me. No doubt Maisie Williams is a tremendous actor. I just think her casting could have been handled with a bit more tact.
What do you guys think? Are you excited by the prospect of a Stark appearing in our favourite show?

The Witch’s Familiar Synopsis Released!
Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
New details have been released by the BBC today about Doctor Who Series 9, among them a synopsis for the second part of the opening story.
The Witch’s Familiar airs on Saturday, 26th September, with Peter Capaldi as the Doctor, Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald and Michelle Gomez as Missy, and apparently goes a little bit like this… (we enclosed it in a spoiler field, just in case you’re feeling particularly phobic):
Spoiler
“Trapped and alone in a terrifying Dalek city, the Doctor is at the heart of an evil Empire; no sonic, no TARDIS, nobody to help. With his greatest temptation before him, can the Doctor resist? And will there be mercy?”
[collapse]
What could that temptation be? We wouldn’t like to spoil things, so we’ll leave the speculation to you. If you’re reading down to the comments, be aware that they may contain spoilers…

Huge Doctor Who Trivia Event Coming to Cities Across the US!
Josh Maxton is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
“It’s a quiz. I have a quiz now. Quizzes are cool.”
Hey! You! Come here, I have some wonderful news to bring to you. Do you like quizzes? How good is your Gallifreyan history? Do you live in America? Well, there’s a huge quiz event coming up that’s just for you! Geeks Who Drink is a homegrown Pub Trivia Quiz, modeled after those in Ireland and the UK. They are the nation’s largest independently-owned pub quiz company. Their quizzes are sometimes thought of as “mini-conventions” for geeks. Many locations will have costume contests, special drinks and prizes created for hardcore fans.
But anyway, the important thing: for one night only (September 17th), at select Geeks Who Drink venues, you will be tested to see how much you know about our favorite Time Lord and his time traveling shenanigans. Are you ready, for the “Don’t Blink: A Doctor Who Quiz!” event? The GWD team are calling fans to action:
“Allons-y, Geeks! It’s been two years since we last quizzed on everyone’s favorite alien adventurer and the blue box that’s bigger on the inside, so we’re pleased to be bringing back Don’t Blink: A Doctor Who Quiz this September (one night only, September 17th)!”
Questions will cover Doctors Hartnell through Capaldi, but Whovians should anticipate material primarily covering the modern series. We’ll still mix in material from the classic shows, so don’t cut corners while studying. As always, Geeks Who Drink rules limit teams to a six player max, with a $5 admission fee for each player. While we can’t promise the quiz won’t go all wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey quizzy-whizzy on you, we can promise a cash prize for our winners! So if your team can tell the difference between Sontarans, Silurians and Slitheen, you’ll be well on your way to earning enough scratch to get that sonic screwdriver you’ve had your eye on.
The rules limit quiz teams to a six-person max, with a $5 admission fee for each player and total prizes in the hundreds of dollars. Admission is allowed on a first come, first served basis, thus many players will show up hours in advance.
So by now you’re thinking “now I know all that’s needed about the event itself, except one thing: where on earth will it be?”. Well, other than being an American quiz, the specifics are below.

Gatiss: “Hartnell Was An Extraordinary Man”
Philip Bates is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Mark Gatiss hosted a Q&A session after a special showing of An Adventure in Space and Time at the Mareel Theatre in the Shetlands – and further pleased fans by introducing The Tractate Middoth.
It was part of the ScreenPlay film festival, curated by Mark Kermode and Linda Ruth Williams, which launched at the tail-end of August. The screenings were at the quayside centre on 4th September, and it seemed that the audience was just a mass of Doctor Who and Sherlock fans! Reporter, Alex Garrick Wright says:
“t was very clear where An Adventure in Space and Time got its passion and energy from. He charmed the audience, talking about walking onto the reconstructed 1963 TARDIS set with childlike glee, and describing his work on Sherlock with a similar fervour and wit.”
Huge thanks to @KermodeMovie & all at @ShetlandArts for a fantastic time at the edge of the world! pic.twitter.com/zvmveykLKr
— Mark Gatiss (@Markgatiss) September 6, 2015
The Tractate Middoth was Gatiss’ adaptation of an M. R. James horror story that first aired in 2013 during Christmas (in a similar ‘festive-horror’ tradition that goes back to Nigel Kneale’s influential The Stone Tape), and featured Sacha Dhawan (Waris Hussein in Adventure), Louise Jameson (aka Leela), and Eleanor Bron (City of Death; Revelation of the Daleks). Unfortunately, it’s not yet been released on DVD or Blu-ray.
Earlier that day, Gatiss had been interviewed on BBC Radio 5 Live by Kermode and Simon Mayo, during which he spoke about the 50th anniversary celebratory special, how he’s still a fan of Who and Sherlock, and his love of horror.
Calling those early days in the TARDIS “like a creation myth,” he says that he grew up with Jon Pertwee’s Third Doctor, and further talks about First Doctor actor, William Hartnell:
“The whole process was fantastic and David Bradley is amazing and touching as Hartnell… Hartnell was an extraordinary man, really, and not an obvious choice, but the part completely changed his life, so [An Adventure in Space and Time] was a celebration really, in so many ways, but also a kind of real love letter to the show for me.”
As well as talking about Lucifer Box and the difficulty of getting a new TV series off the ground, they hint at some exciting movie casting for the actor, although he can’t say anything more…
The Waters of Mars star, Lindsay Duncan also appeared at the Shetland’s ScreenPlay festival, as well as writer-director, Carol Morley.

Doctor Who Desert Shoot for Series 9?

For awhile now Doctor Who’s official Instagram page has been a great sources for small teases about the new season. As of the past couple of days we’ve been getting some set pictures from the latest production block, filming the upcoming, and still unnamed, season finale directed by Dark Water/Death in Heaven director Rachel Talalay.
Firstly we’ve got a shot of the clapboard in front of a desert in Fuerteventura.

Next we’ve got Peter Capaldi looking over some footage in the camera. It’s nice to see a Doctor taking an interest in the production of the show, Capaldi has directed quite a few things in his life don’t you know!

Then the latest picture is a general snapshot of the behind the scenes working of our favourite sci-fi show.

Now, let’s talk about that desert. Most likely it’s just a cover for an normal alien landscape, but let’s theorise a bit. Is it the long awaited return of San Helios and the Swarm? Is it the ruins of Skaro? The Gallifreyan desert seen in The Day of the Doctor? For all we know it could actually just be Fuerteventura itself and Clara and The Doctor just felt like a holiday. Post your guesses below!

BBC America’s David Tennant Doctor Who Marathon
Billy Garratt-John is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
We previously reported that BBC America would be airing a season of episodes leading up to the première of Series 9 on September 19th under the umbrella title, ‘The Doctor’s Finest’. We also reported that they were a startlingly unimaginative and bland selection of stories that showed off very little of what the New Series has to offer. But stalwarts like Blink, The Doctor’s Wife and a personal favourite of mine, The Waters of Mars did, thankfully, make the cut.
Sadly, the run omitted any stories prior to 2006, so Eccleston was shunned in favour of such classics as The End of Time and The Time of the Doctor. This tradition carries on, however, with a day long marathon of David Tennant serials starting at 6am on Wednesday 16th September and concluding in the wee hours of Thursday morning. Jeez. Strap in folks – it’s gonna be a bumpy ride.
In fairness, the choice of episodes here is very evenly spread across the 10th Doctor’s tenure, oh no wait, it isn’t. Ten episodes from Series Two, three from Series’ Three and Four respectively and the “Complete Specials”. And guess how comprehensive this list is. Go on. What’s the best thing they could have done here, to top it all off? Yep, you guessed it. They’re airing The Impossible Planet and following it up with…Army of Ghosts, not The Impossible Planet‘s second part (and resolution) The Satan Pit. Bravo, BBC America. Great job.
Anyway, here’s the full list:
Wednesday 16th September
6am – The Christmas Invasion
7am – New Earth
8am – Tooth And Claw
9am – School Reunion
10am – Girl In The Fireplace
11am – Rise Of The Cybermen
12pm – The Age Of Steel
1pm – The Idiot’s Lantern
2pm – The Impossible Planet
3pm – Army Of Ghosts
4pm – Doomsday
5pm – Gridlock
6pm – Human Nature
7pm – The Family Of Blood
8pm – Midnight
9pm – The Stolen Earth
10pm – Journey’s End
11pm – The Next Doctor
Thursday 17th September
12.20am – Planet Of The Dead
1.40am – The Waters Of Mars
3am – The End Of Time (Parts 1 and 2)
Interestingly, Blink doesn’t make an appearance here, but thankfully, great episodes like Girl in the Fireplace, Human Nature/Family of Blood and Midnight are here to be enjoyed.
What do you guys think of this list, and which stories would you swap out?

Has Clara Moved on in Doctor Who Series 9?
Katie Gribble is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
In the run up to the new series, there has been a lot of discussion over how much the events of the end of last season will have a lasting effect on Clara.
In a new interview, Jenna Coleman reveals that Clara’s perspective on her own life has changed and the losses that she has experienced have certainly informed how the character confronts situations in the latest series. Meanwhile, showrunner Steven Moffat has revealed that Clara has been able to get over Danny, but she’s sad that she lost a tremendously good and noble man.
There is certainly very little sign that Clara will be pining over Danny which is a good thing for the ongoing storyline no longer lingering on the mistakes of the past, something which Doctor Who has revelled in during previous series. All that matter now are the adventures that are yet to come!
Doctor Who returns to our screens on 19th September on BBC One and BBC America!
