Emma Watson IS The Doctor!

Simon Mills is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Sorry! I had to do THAT again after the great reaction we got from my Catherine Tate IS The Doctor! article!

In all seriousness, though, given that we have well and truly established in canon that The Doctor COULD be a woman and that we really enjoy speculating about the what-ifs and maybes and the heck-nos, then why shouldn’t we dig a little deeper into the gender-swapping speculation that is happening elsewhere on the interwebs? It’s not like we’ve got any new Doctor Who happening this side of Christmas to talk about, is it?

First up, we have the Metro discussing the possibility that Emma Watson, the lovably nerdy and super-pretty Hermione Granger from Harry Potter (in case you didn’t know!). They say she is being “touted” (although it’s not clear who is doing this touting other than the Metro themselves) to take over in 2018 when Chibs takes the reins of the show. I call him Chibs. I’m probably the only one, though, to be fair. It amuses me to think this guy could be running the show. Anyway, I digress…

The Metro says it’s time to breathe fresh air into the show. I tend to agree, but I think the new show runner Chris Chibnall will be changing enough to keep us interested without having The Doctor change gender, as well. We’ll have fresh ideas, new directions, new music, new titles, some new writers (hopefully including some more female writers – I wonder what J.K. Rowling is up to…?) and maybe a new Doctor. But should it be Watson? She’s certainly a fantastic role model outside of the acting profession with her gender equality charity work. Taking this one step further, they also mention what fun it would be to have men cosplaying as a female Doctor at conventions – this idea does amuse me (and I’d do it!), but it’s hardly a good reason to make such a radical change to the show’s format.

Over at the Independent, they take a different approach, stating that the show desperately needs a reboot. Not a restart from scratch, but a completely new approach to get away from the cul-de-sac that The Grand Moff drove us into.

Under Moffat, they claim the show has ended up talking to itself rather than appealing across the board to fans and casual viewers alike. I tend to agree somewhat, as it felt as though it was written “by fans for fans” – which, in essence, it was. Chibs should strip it back and make the fan references a much rarer occurence and just concentrate on taking the show in new directions – i.e. forwards.

On the subject of a fresh new Doctor, one actress they propose is Eva Green, who has great genre credentials with Penny Dreadful – but that already films for six months a year in Dublin. Would she have the time? If she does, then she could be a great choice as a mature woman known for playing strong characters with plenty of big and small screen experience. She’s been a Bond girl (Casino Royale), a psychic (Penny Dreadful), a dame to kill for (the Sin City sequel), a persian naval commander (300: Rise of an Empire) and many other suitably spiffing roles. So why not? I’ll even go out on a limb and say that I would prefer Eva Green over Catherine Tate if we have to choose a female Doctor. What do you reckon, Kasterborites?

In a typically frivolous and condescending piece of finger-in-the-air list making, the Mirror gives us their opinion on the subject of the next Doctor. When not insulting us with comments like “Doctor Who fans are getting their multi-coloured Tom Baker tribute scarves in a twist” they regurgitate the list of names in the frame from Ladbrokes. Top of the list at 5/1 is Ben Whishaw (Q in the recent Bond films). It’s an interesting list and I won’t repeat the whole thing here… Actually, I will, so you don’t have to read the Mirror’s insulting rhetoric that’s wrapped around it – I’ve done that for you already so you don’t need to bother!

Ben Whishaw 5/1
Richard Ayoade 6/1
Rory Kinnear 7/1
Miranda Hart 8/1
Jason Flemyng 9/1
David Harewood 10/1
Helena Bonham Carter 10/1
Alexander Vlahos 12/1
Daniel Rigby 12/1
Olivia Colman 14/1
Michael Sheen 14/1
Idris Elba 16/1
Chiwetel Ejifor 16/1
Russell Tovey 16/1
Ben Daniels 20/1
Alexandra Roach 20/1
Jennifer Saunders 20/1
Sheridan Smith 20/1
Sophie Okonedo 25/1
Tilda Swinton 25/1
Helen Mirren 25/1
Hugh Bonneville 25/1
Sarah Lancashire 25/1
Eddie Redmaybe 25/1
Phillip Glenister 25/1
David Mitchell 33/1
Keeley Hawes 33/1
James Corden 50/1
Hugh Grant 50/1
Katherine Kelly 50/1
Damian Lewis 50/1

Some intersting names on the list, and some real shockers. James Corden? NO!!! Tilda Swinton? YES!!! Alexander Vlahos would be a good choice with experience on Merlin and even some Doctor Who on his CV (Doctor Who: The Adventure Games – The Gunpowder Plot). Idris Elba would be superb, but it looks as though he’ll be busy with Stephen King’s Dark Tower TV and film series, unfortunately. David Harewood is also busy with his role on Supergirl.

So… over to you, dear readers… Vent away! But please keep it clean. No kicking. No biting. No gouging. No ringing door bells and running away!

Wogan and the Doctor

Jonathan Appleton is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

It’s been a week of tributes to Terry Wogan, the broadcaster who died on January 31st and who had been a regular presence on British television and radio for well over four decades. His career encompassed two lengthy spells as BBC Radio 2 breakfast show host, his Wogan chat show which ran in an early evening slot on BBC1 from 1985-1992 and Blankety Blank, a hugely popular game show with famously unimpressive prizes which he presented on the same channel from 1979-1983. He also provided sardonic commentary for that festival of high-camp, the Eurovision Song Contest, which for many viewers was the main reason to tune in.

He was perhaps most proud of his association with Children in Need, the BBC’s charity appeal which he first presented in 1980. The telethon, an annual November fixture on BBC1, raised many millions for children’s causes and has had a long association with Doctor Who with stars making guest appearances and, since 2005, previews of forthcoming Christmas episodes and special mini-episodes including 2007’s Time Crash.

It’s fitting, then, that we pay our own mini-tribute to Terry Wogan with this selection of clips and curiosities from a range of shows dating back to 1983 and a special birthday for the Doctor…

Children in Need 1983

It’s November 1983 and The Five Doctors has just been screened on BBC1, forming the centrepiece of the schedule for Children in Need night. Peter Davison, en route to Chicago for a convention as the programme aired, appears in a pre-recorded segment with Wogan and generously donates his coat to the appeal. Doctor Who’s cult appeal in the USA is discussed (“I believe they’re called Whovians…” Peter informs us) and this was evidently a subject of some interest to Wogan, judging by the way he returned to it in other interviews…

Children in Need 1985

Children in Need night two years later, by which time Colin Baker had taken up the controls of the TARDIS, and a parade of former Doctors and their companions make an entrance to be greeted by Wogan and astronomer Patrick Moore (who sets up the occasion nicely by acting suitably impressed when the TARDIS materialises in front of his very eyes). Look out for rare appearances by Michael Craze, Adrienne Hill and Ian Marter as Jon Pertwee and Patrick Troughton get into the spirit by recreating their Three Doctors bickering shtick, often repeated for convention audiences.

Peter Davison and Sandra Dickinson on Wogan

A 1985 appearance on Wogan by Peter Davison and his then-wife Sandra Dickinson who have come on the show to sup champagne and plug forthcoming pantomime Aladdin. It’s most notable for a sweet conversation about their infant daughter Georgia (wonder what became of her?), then just 11 months old, who, as the couple clarify, would not be appearing on stage with them. Doctor Who’s American fans come up again, whom Davison sums up in comments he know he’ll live to regret as ‘always slightly bonkers… in the nicest possible way.’

Colin Baker on Wogan

A bearded Colin Baker appears on Wogan in 1986 to launch the delayed Season 23. Ever the old pro, Wogan introduces the segment by indulging in a bit of sparring with a Mandrel (“What have you done with Doctor Who?” he cries). Colin’s lucky knickers and his appeal to women as the dastardly Paul Meroney in 1970’s hit drama The Brothers are under discussion as, inevitably, is Doctor Who’s cult status in America. Wogan gives a clue as to why he keeps on bringing this up by disclosing that he once sat next to an American fan on a plane. Phew, good to have that one cleared up….

Jon Pertwee on Wogan (Part 1 0f 2)

It’s 1989 on the Wogan show and Jon Pertwee is returning to the role of the Doctor for stage production The Ultimate Adventure. Always aware of his own worth, Pertwee jokes that it’s because ‘the money’s good’ and soon has the audience eating out of his hands with stories of how he put his Doctor Who costume together, how he lost control of a hovercraft during filming and the perils of dealing with demanding audiences at the Glasgow Empire and in Shepherd’s Bush…

Jon Pertwee on Wogan (Part 2 of 2)

More from Jon Pertwee, surely the greatest ever all-round showman to have played the Doctor, in the same interview. If you’ve never witnessed him demonstrate his gift for mimicry and funny voices just watch the hilarious way he recounts the tale of how he impressed Noel Coward early in his career. The audience lap it up and you can sense Wogan’s delight that the interview is going down so well. Chat show gold.

Points of Who

Later in Wogan’s career now, September 2003 to be more precise, and he’s presenting BBC1’s long-running feedback programme Points of View. Thrilled viewers have been in touch to express their delight that Doctor Who will be making its long awaited return in 2005. Terry wonders if perma-tanned antiques show presenter David Dickinson will play the role before introducing a montage of clips.

He may not have been much of a Doctor Who fan himself (I got the feeling from listening to his radio show that crime dramas and literary adaptations were more to his taste) but, as this mini nostalgia fest demonstrates, he was smart enough to recognise the programme’s appeal and was always happy to play along with the fun of having Doctor Who-related items on his shows. Terry Wogan was as much a part of the history of British broadcasting as Doctor Who itself and will be missed by millions.

Out Now – Doctor Who Magazine #496

Andrew Reynolds is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Doctor Who Magazine has an exclusive interview with the War Doctor and acting legend Sir John Hurt, who talks about returning to the role that stole the show in 50th anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor.

Asking him about his return in his brand new audio adventure, Hurt shared his initial reaction to the news that there was more install for the battle-hardened Doctor.

“Well, I said, ‘Doctor Who? I don’t think that’s really my sort of stuff.’ But my wife was listening, and when she heard that it was the 50th anniversary, she said, ‘You’ve got to be f***ing joking! You’re doing it! So I’ve really for her to thank. I’m really pleased I did it, because it opened up a whole new era for me. A whole new era.”

On returning to the role for Big Finish’s audio adventures, Hurt explains:

“I was often asked, ‘Are you going to do anymore? And I said, ‘Well, I don’t think so. I’m not ruling it out, but unless somebody comes up with a real stonker of an idea that would involve him again… But the thing is that you can’t plan careers. You think, ‘That’s the way to play it’, but it’s not necessarily the case at all. If you follow your nose, that’s often the way to play it. And that’s exactly how I feel about this. I mean, I really have enjoyed every second of it. I mean it.”

Steven Moffat Praises ‘Dream Jobs’ As He Collects OBE

Andrew Reynolds is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Congratulations are in order for Steven Moffat, who praised ‘dreams jobs’ of Sherlock and Doctor Who, as he collected his OBE for services to drama.

Receiving his award from the Prince of Wales during the Buckingham Palace investiture ceremony, Moffat said his success was down to ‘an excess of good fortune’.

Speaking of the experience Moffat told the Scottish Daily Record:

“It was very thrilling and formal and slightly, slightly, just very slightly, like being back at school. But nicer because everyone got a prize. Talking to other people before I came in, I kind of feel everyone’s here for a better reason than me.

“I’ve got not one, but two dream jobs so to get this lovely thing for already indulging myself in public, seems like an excess of good fortune.”

Sadly, one of those dream jobs is coming to an end but in classic Who tradition, it’s been prepared for. Sharing his thought on his departure, Moffat said:

“Ahead of me this year I have 14 Doctor Who and 3 Sherlock films, so the last thing I am doing is contemplating work beyond that…. The reason you end up leaving Doctor Who, much as we all love it, is because it’s all year round. It’s a really tough gig.”

14 episodes does seem to suggest that his last episode will be the 2017 Christmas Special.

As for Sherlock, despite its international success, Moffat still thinks of the show and those who work on it as being a part of a cottage industry.

“I think every single one of us involved, we’re daily surprised,” he said. “It’s just a tiny cottage industry Sherlock, it’s just a wee bunch of folk, who all know each other, we have to keep reminding each other this is an international deal.”

You can check out the full interview in the video below.

The Minister of Chance Comes to Amazon

Katie Gribble is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Entertainment giant and drone enthusiasts Amazon have acquired Doctor Who spin-off The Minister of Chance!” What is The Minister of Chance?” I hear you howl at the unfamiliar collection of words before you. Well, now is the perfect time to find out!

The series set in a world not our own, sees Ambassador Durian of the technologically advanced nation of Sezuan  sent to negotiate peace with the King of the medieval backwater nation of Tanto. However, the King rebuffs Durian’s overtures of friendship, and things take a turn for the very, very sinister.

At a nearby inn, barmaid Kitty’s routine of fighting, abusing customers, and avoiding personal hygiene is disrupted by the arrival of a cloaked stranger. Her routine is further disrupted when she follows him into the forest, through a ghostly doorway, over the frost bridge between worlds, and into an adventure encompassing invasions, machiavellian political scheming and conversations with frog gods at the entrance to the Underworld…

A labour of love for creator Dan Freeman, the accomplished scripts and production values soon found willing backers via crowdfunding – helped by the immense roster of talent including Jenny Agutter, Jed Brophy, Lauren Crace, Paul Darrow, Philip Glenister, Tamsin Greig, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann and theatrical legend Julian Wadham as the titular Minister.

The epic tales have an effervescent worldwide fanbase (known as ‘Chancers’) and a movie version is in pre-production as we speak! Well not speak, type…well not type, read, well, one of us is reading, the other is off battling demons across the planes of imagination.

The series is now available via Audible or for £7.87.

What’s more producers Radio Static have launched a whole new podcast The Light of September – an audio movie where in something travels faster than the speed of light, leaving a wake of Earth-shattering consequences for the crew of the oceanographic research ship Venus to confront.

Featuring a stellar international cast – including Sylvester McCoy and Tamsin Greig – and incredible innovations in audio technique, the series will take you on a journey into wild seas and strange lands.

All you need is a pair of headphones!

For more details about The Minister of Chance and The Light of September, head over to Radio Static.

Don’t Panic! Dad’s Army Missing Episode Gets Animated – Could Doctor Who Be Next?

Andrew Reynolds is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

They may have been the boys to stop old Hitler’s game but now they could be about to start a new influx of animated adaptations of missing episodes – giving hope to beleaguered fans that an announcement could be imminent.

This week the BBC will release a missing episode of classic sitcom Dad’s Army, which has been animated for the BBC Store. The episode, A Stripe for Frazer, has not been seen it was first broadcast 47 years ago. While the audio remains, the full episode was lost in the great cull of the BBC archive during the 60’s and 70’s – before the existence of the lucrative home video market.

Now, with animation bringing the episode back to life for die-hard fans, could we soon see more missing episodes of Doctor Who receive similar treatment.

We’ve already had Second Doctor classic The Invasion brought to life by the process, followed by the First Doctor’s final episode The Tenth Planet, and the Second Doctor adventures The Moonbase and The Ice Warriors.

Exploring the potential, the Metro sat down with Niel Bushnell, an author and animator who worked on the film Space Jam and numerous Doctor Who projects, to talk about the tantalising prospect.

Animation is often very time consuming and labour intensive. Trying to recreate lost episodes of Doctor Who complicates the process further as you’re recreating something that existed as opposed to just creating something without restrictions.”

Restrictions to the process might hamper the chances of seeing more animated episodes but, perhaps the biggest restriction imposed on any project would, more than likely, be money.

BAFTA-nominated director Chris Chapman, who helmed many Doctor Who documentaries and the animation for The Ice Warriors, underlines the prohibited budgets and limited returns for such a project.

“The challenge is always money. As these releases have never been for broadcast, budgets are tiny and that forces you in to a more stripped-back approach. Budget has been the reason so far that you’ve not seen more Doctor Who animations.”

However, the idea of selling such episodes directly to fans via the BBC Store does open up any potential project to a wider and hopefully more lucrative audience.

With so much audio only material still in existence, Doctor Who seems ripe for more animated treatment – giving fans a new way to see lost material.

The 30 minute flash-animation of A Stripe For Frazer will be available exclusively on BBC Store from today.

Jenna Coleman and Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke Team Up in Me Before You Trailer

Andrew Reynolds is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Former companion Jenna Coleman and Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke are amongst a cavalcade of British talent featuring in the new trailer for the film adaptation of Jojo Moyes bestseller Me Before You.

The film sees Sam Claflin (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) play Will, a man who survives a motorcycle accident but is paralysed from the neck down. Unable to keep a job, Louisa, played by Clarke, forms a strong emotional bond with Will when she is assigned to care for him as his condition worsens.

Jenna, plays Louisa’s younger sister Katrina who disappears occasionally to travel in time with an older man…no, wait. Sorry force of habit; she instead helps Louisa throughout her experience with Will – needless to say, there will be tears.

Me Before You also features a host of stars; how many stars you say? Well, the night sky is dark, for all the stars are in Me Before You: Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), Matthew Lewis (the Harry Potter saga), Janet McTeer (Tumbleweeds), Brendan Coyle (Downton Abbey), Ben Lloyd-Hughes (War & Peace) and Gino Picciano who stared as uncredited as a chef in The Man from U.N.C.L.E, all appear in the film, which is set for release in UK cinemas on June 3rd.

Here’s What Day of the Doctor Would Have Looked Like With Christopher Eccleston

Andrew Reynolds is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

The Day of the Doctor was nearly an unmitigated disaster: No Doctors! Some Doctors! Just Clara! But thanks to some last minute confirmations, a quick rewrite of the whole of the Doctor Who canon and a brilliant performance by John Hurt, the special was a thorough delight.

But what of all the work that preceded the months of hand-wringing and negotiations; what of the might-have-been?

Well now we have a peak at what might have been…

It’s been well documented that Christopher Eccleston didn’t exactly leave the show on amicable terms; attempts were made to bring him back to the fold and, despite personally meeting with Steven Moffat, he decided not to appear as the Ninth Doctor once more time.

However, we didn’t know how far along the process they were with the Ninth Doctor still on board.

Andrew Wildman, comic creator, animator, TV producer and storyboard creator was one of the people who worked on the show, and has released a collection of storyboards that he sells at shows, for The Day of The Doctor and Nightmare In Silver.

Bleeding Cool’s Rich Johnston picked up a copy at the Geek Comic Con where he discovered storyboards not only featuring the Ninth Doctor but, instead of Billie Piper as The Moment, we get a mysterious young girl.

An introduction to the set says:

“My run on the show spanned three Christmas Specials and most of Matt ‘s final season including his ‘regeneration’. That was me pretty much done other than the huge privilege of being asked to work – albeit in a small way – on the 50th Anniversary special. There were going to be three Doctors in this one. The current, 11th Doctor and the previous two. Ok, so it didn’t quite work out that way in the end as we all know. Contracts are an odd thing and in the end show runner and writer supreme, Steven Moffat, had to come up with something… slightly different. At my time of working on the show however it was the three ‘modern age’ Doctors and the current assistant, Clara.”

Firstly, you can see Clara popping a wheelie as she makes her entrance into the TARDIS.

clara wheelie

Then we see the barn on Gallifrey where, instead of John Hurt’s War Doctor, we get Christopher Eccleston’s Ninth Doctor and the mysterious young girl as The Moment.

ninth day of the doctor

You’ll also notice one of the fissures in time opening above their heads and, from this point on, the Ninth Doctor becomes the focus of the narrative – first being pulled through the fissure and then meeting both the Tenth Doctor and the two incarnations of Queen Elizabeth.

You can take a look at a selection of Wildman’s storyboards over at Bleeding Cool.

BBC Books are to reissue seven classic Doctor Who novelisations from the original Target Books range. The out of print novels will also be made available in digital format for the first time and feature illustrations from original artist Chris Achilleos.

Often the only way fans could revisit episodes, the Target imprint in the 1970’s was extremely popular and the novels remain much coveted amongst ardent collectors.

The seven reissues feature one title for each Doctor covered on the Target list.

The books are: Doctor Who and the Zarbi by Bill Strutton (First Doctor); Doctor Who and the Web of Fear by Terrance Dicks (Second Doctor); Doctor Who and the Dinosaur Invasion by Malcolm Hulke (Third Doctor); Doctor Who and the Genesis of the Daleks by Terrance Dicks (Fourth Doctor); Doctor Who: The Visitation by Eric Saward (Fifth Doctor); Doctor Who: Vengeance on Varos by Philip Martin (Sixth Doctor) and Doctor Who: Battlefield by Marc Platt (Seventh Doctor).

The titles will be published in both physical and digital on 28th April priced £6.99 (digital editions are available for £4.99), followed by hardback facsimile editions of the first three Doctor Who novels ever published – Doctor Who and the Daleks by David Whitaker, Doctor Who and the Zarbi by Bill Strutton, Doctor Who and the Crusaders by David Whitaker – on 3rd November, priced £9.99.

BBC Books has also commissioned three new pieces of artwork from Achilleos, for The Visitation, Vengeance on Varos and Battlefield to create a uniform look for collectors.

Albert DePetrillo, senior editorial director at BBC Books, said:

“The Target novelisations hold a special place in the hearts of Doctor Who fans. When we published our first set of reissues in 2012, the response was overwhelming, and we’re delighted to continue bringing these classic books to a new generation of readers.”

Achilleos added:

“I am delighted to be back on board after so many years. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, illustrating the jackets in the original old style – it felt just the same, and I am looking forward to signing them for the fans. I’m so pleased that people still want to revisit these books.”
