The spiritual pride of American Catholics of fundamentalist bent

The self-righteousness and spiritual pride - there is no other word for it - of fundamentalist-leaning Catholics in the United States has to be witnessed to be believed. It is a phenomenon in itself. Such Catholics seem to believe that it is they and, presumably, they alone who are 'going to save' the Catholic Church from ruin by going to Hell in the proverbial hand basket.

On unity and diversity in the Church

Ubi Petrus, Ibi Ecclesia, Ibi Deus Pope Francis on unity and diversity in the Church (Homily for Pentecost, 2017): “By His presence and activity, the Spirit draws into unity spirits that are distinct and separate among themselves (Cyril of Alexandria, Commentary on the Gospel of John, XI, 11). He does so in a way that affects […]

Pope Francis: “Dare to call God ‘Father'”

In today’s general audience, Pope Francis said, “Calling God by the name ‘Father’ is not something that can be taken for granted. We are tempted to use the highest titles, which are respectful of his transcendence. But calling him ‘Father’ puts us in His confidence, like a child talking to his dad, knowing that […]

Question for those insistent on the death penalty in America

If non-lethal means are sufficient to defend and protect people’s safety from the aggressor, authority will limit itself to such means . . . the cases in which the execution of the offender is an absolute necessity are very rare, if not practically nonexistent (Catechism of the Catholic Church, #2267). For those who keep insisting […]

God is not like that

You claim to know Him, but you do not. You claim to understand Him, but you do not – neither in His operations, nor in His being. You claim to speak in His Name, defending Him and His holy Church. But, in reality, you do not as you only know yourselves.Filed under: God the Father […]

Can a person become evil? Correcting the inadequate catechesis of some Christians in the United States

A tendency has arisen and seems to be increasing these days among some Christians, Catholics included, in the United States to regard human persons as evil in themselves. Discourses and language such as, for instance, a “distorted and evil soul” or “becoming evil” is being used more and more often to describe “evil people” regarded as […]

The hypocrisy of the pro-life movement in the United States

Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is greater than I can bear. Behold, You have driven me this day away from the ground; and from Your face I shall be hidden; and I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will slay me.” Then the Lord said […]
