The Registry by Shannon Stoker

The government has taken over. American is great, the rest of the world is wrong. Women are to be raised, appraised, and sold. Dumb, beautiful women are desired. Submissive women who do as their husbands desire. Boys are soldiers dedicated solely to protecting their country.
The gov't become The Registry. Humans are only told what the Registry wants them to know.
Mia has just been appraised and bought for 500,000 dollars, but having just seen her sister beaten and abused, finally begins to question the way they live. What is happening in other countries? Are women treated this way? Could she maybe escape and have a say in her life?
Her, her friend, and Andrew, a farmhand traveling being he enlists, end up on an adventure as they try to escape to Mexico, a cruel, evil billionaire hot on their trail, leaving bodies in the wake of his fancy helicopter.
What I enjoyed about this novel is the complete thought-evoking world the author created. I actually found myself nodding, imaging this could very well happen if we're not careful. And Andrew...I found his plight/situation the most fascinating of all. Boy are abandoned, thrown out. It's assumed that they will be better soldiers if they grow up without love, connections, if they are forced to fend for themselves. Andrew is like a trained robot who slowly begins to feel, but doesn't know what to do about his emotions. To add to the robot-feel of the men in the story, they often fail to speak in contractions. Their prose is very robotic.
The heroine...I have mixed feelings about her. She seems bratty and selfish a lot, but then she was raised to be this good-for-nothing wife who just looks good and cooks. Like any teenager, suddenly she has freedom--not only to get into trouble, but to FEEL and act on those feelings--and naturally this leads to swapping spit with two different boys as she experiments. I just didn't care for the love triangle aspect of it and the fact she was willing to behave like this when people are literally DYING so she can have her freedom.
Truly, a fascinating plot and conflict though. The book also has these bits of The Girls' and Boys' Guides to this futurist world that at times made me laugh out loud.
"...female physical desires will be satisfied with intense pleasure on a wife's marriage night. Over the length of the marriage more pleasure will be afforded the wife, some so intense and glorious it would be unladylike to put them into words."
"There is no gray area when it comes to war. All others are wrong and we are always right."
Galley received from Edelweiss and quote may be slightly different in the published version. Three stars.

Strong is Sexy Heroine of the Week: Raina Abbott

Author: Roxy Wilson
Heroine: Raina Abbott
The heroine in He's So Into You is Raina Abbott, a preschool teacher who is not only strong, but also sexy. This lady is strong because although she faces seemingly insurmountable odds in an emotionally and psychologically abusive three-year relationship, she deserves praise for her sheer grit. After all, she walks away from her home and her ex, with just her handbag and the clothes on her back and starts her life afresh. Yes, one of the downsides of dealing with her plight while in her relationship is relying heavily on comfort foods, but once Raina lets go she literally gets to stepping on the treadmill and elliptical bike and begins her journey to reclaiming her health. Of course, she is able to lose a considerable amount of weight, and though by today's standards her size 16 figure is still considered plus size, losing 'more than eighty five 'freakin' pounds' is no small feat. While it's true that as she molds herself into that strong woman she wants to become she experiences periods of self doubt and sometimes makes some self-deprecating remarks, in the end she proclaims, she's a "woman deserving love and attention from a kind, decent man. A woman who is ... beautiful both inside and out. An intelligent woman. A woman full of pride because of her accomplishments... a woman worth more than the crumbs she was willing to accept or what she thought she deserved because she felt she didn't matter." What a strong woman Raina is!
Yet, arguably, Raina is not sexy just because she has naturally long locks, or has a cute dimple on her right cheek, or the way she is able to strengthen and transform her body and mind; she's also sexy because of the way she's able to help the hero, Jordan Cooper, open his eyes to the fact that he's not to blame for his fiance's death in a plane crash. Though Jordan sees a therapist to try to overcome his PTSD, it doesn't seem to be very effective. Sweet, sexy Raina shows him the futility of blaming himself for something he couldn't control when she declares,"Could you control the weather? The pilot's actions? Any other thing that went wrong in that plane? ...Things went terribly wrong that day. Naturally. Jordan feels his fiance's parents blame him for their loss, but Raina sets him straight when she informs him that if she was in his fiance's parents' shoes she would at least find peace in the fact that (her) 'daughter's final moments were with a man whom (she) trusted enough to marry her." In fact, Raina gives Jordan a message of hope, a message that confirms that the 'point of our existence is not how long we live but how well we live' and that he should live again, and love again and find happiness again. In this way Raina proves she's quite a sexy lady because in those moments with Jordan she's like the balm of Gilead to heal and soothe Jordan's soul. How sexy is that?

Blurb:
Being badly injured in a plane crash and feeling responsible for losing his fiancé keep Jordan Cooper from getting involved with another woman, but his best friend Caleb talks him into going on a blind date. He’s surprised that in a short time his feelings for Raina Abbott runs deep. Jordan wants more than just one night with her, but he has to convince her first.
Leaving an abusive ex and ending an unhealthy relationship with food still aren’t enough to help Raina Abbott overcome her feelings of insecurity, but her best friend Jayce convinces her that going on a blind date is the first step to boosting her self-confidence and feeling good about herself again. Jordan Cooper shows her that she’s beautiful, both inside and out, but can a date and one night of passion assure her that he’s really into her?

The Boleyn King by Laura Andersen

Having sworn off anything Tudor, I surprised myself by being drawn to this...and I liked it!
But I have one complaint right off the bat. It ends on a cliffhanger!!!! One conspiracy reveals another, one love affair begins...and the story ends, leaving us waiting for...a year? If the next book was already available, this wouldn't bother me so much, but I fear by the time book two comes out (I'm certainly hoping there's a book two) I may have forgotten the intricacies of this one.
Or maybe not. I probably won't remember all the treaty and war details and the Howards were sure hard to remember. I kept getting confused with what Howard had done what. But the love between Minuette and Dominic...the love William feels for her...and the hints at passion between Elizabeth and Robert...I won't forget those. They just really come off the page.
The novel is a young king William trying to ensure his throne against his very Catholic "Bloody Mary" sister. Elizabeth Tudor is in the background, and I love how likable this author portrayed her. Almost all books about Elizabeth Tudor paint her a snotty, jealous, evil b*tch. This was a nice change.
Most of the novel focused on her friend, but I have a feeling we'll be seeing more of Elizabeth and I look forward to it. I felt that in this novel she was restraining her power and desires.
Some areas were dull. I'm simply not interested in war and battles of that time, but the rest of the book had me very intrigued. I do hate the cliffhanger feeling, however.
Four stars. Def a read you can get lost in.
I got this from Netgalley.

A Healing Love Released #ContemporaryRomance With #DeafHeroine

I'd like you all to meet Kimberly, an Iraqi Freedom war vet healing wounds in her heart as well as her body. In a town called Cripple Creek, she struggles with her new disabilities: hearing loss and vision impairment...but they're only disabilities if you let them be. With the help of a handsome doctor, can she realize this?
Blurb:
Kimberly Rogers vowed to fight a tragic past the only way she knew how: she joined the Army and became strong. No man would hurt her again. But a war wound sends her to her brother's in Cripple Creek, WY, with vision and hearing impairments.
Whereas glasses can help her see and hearing aids can help her hear, nothing can force her to talk again. Is she really unable to speak, or is she hiding behind her disability to protect herself, her pride, and her heart? Regulated to the most menial of jobs, her world in shambles, Kimberly is finally convinced to seek medical assistance.
Carlos Medina is Jackson Hole's best therapist. If anyone can make Kimberly speak again, it's him. But Kimberly has to meet him halfway, and Carlos has his own past tragedy that the young, mute woman threatens to force him to conquer.
They both have wounds…and sometimes wounds must be reopened before they can heal. Can they open up to each other? Can Kimberly find her voice again and open her heart? Can love heal them both?
Excerpt:Carlos had been expecting a badly scarred, burly woman, not the petite, slender girl from the coffee shop in Cripple Creek. Only, she wasn’t really a girl. Her curves attested to that. He had to remind himself she was twenty-three, as there was something extremely young and vulnerable about her. Only the angry red mark on her throat—not covered by a scarf as it had been when he’d seen her before—marred her beauty…and that didn’t bother him.
She stepped forward, her gaze on his. She looked just as surprised at the sight of him as he was at the sight of her. Had she been expecting an old man with gray hair? He fought the urge not to smile at the idea. Most people expected someone with his reputation to be much older than his twenty-eight years…and not a biker they’d met in a coffee shop who rambled about senoritas and antibiotics. After all, obtaining a PhD was time-consuming. But he’d been lucky, and unlike many other students, had not had to work his way through college, and thus, had been able to focus solely on his studies. He knew he was blessed. A supportive family and a scholarship had seen him through.
Carlos jolted himself from his musings and managed to tear his gaze away from his patient—patient, best not to forget that—and looked for her brother, expecting him to be right behind her. There was no one there; she was alone.
“Hi.” He rose from his chair and reached a hand out to her for her to shake. “You must be Kimberly Rogers. Is your brother with you?” Her hand felt soft and delicate in his own. He was careful not to give it the firm squeeze he normally was prone to giving, careful to keep his expression neutral and not reveal his surprise or pleasure.
She nodded and pointed to the door, in the direction of the waiting room.
He mentally flipped a switch in his mind, from Casual Carlos to Doctor Carlos. Carlos decided the fact she had brought her brother, but not allowed him to escort her into the office itself was a positive sign. She wanted to do this on her own, obviously. She wasn’t weakened to the point she needed someone to hold her hand at all moments. His task may not be as difficult as he’d originally thought. Then again, too much pride could also hinder a patient’s healing. But at least she was willing and comfortable enough to face a therapist on her own. The woman had drive. It was visible in the way she held herself in front of him, back straight, shoulders back, chin up. And though he knew from her records she was wearing contacts, her eyes had a determined glint the lenses couldn’t hide. The removal of the scarf was a positive step as well. She was no longer ashamed of her wound.
“Have a seat.” Carlos gestured to the chair across from his desk, and then, instead of taking his own, he walked around to take the seat a short distance from hers, turning it slightly as he sat so he would be facing her. When she appeared comfortable, despite the fact she was gripping the armrests, he smiled warmly at her. “I’m Carlos Medina. Your brother told me some of your past history and current problems, but I would like the full story from you. Now, I realize you cannot speak; that’s why you’re here, so is there a particular way you wish to communicate with me right now? You want to write? Would you rather fill out a form and then talk to me on the computer until we progress?” He waited, clearing his throat nervously, for her to answer, and shocked himself with his own internal thought. Please, say no.
Yea, he was going to crumple and throw that desensitization, talk via computer crap out the window…if she let him. He couldn’t explain why—some therapist he was—but he didn’t want to this woman to talk to him online. He wanted to talk to her in person. The little switch was slipping back down to Casual Carlos pretty fast. There must be a short in my circuit, because I don’t want or need a woman in my life like that—especially not a patient. It’s not worth my career…or my heart.
Carlos visualized the switch in his mind as he watched the young woman and pictured the little button moving back up to Doctor Carlos.
* * * *
Kimberly stared at the handsome doctor in front of her. Talking online would be easier and more convenient, but she didn’t need that kind of treatment. It wasn’t like she was afraid of going out in public. Plus, she’d lucked out as far as doctors went. The doctors at Walter Reed had been older, gray, and paunchy. Heck, her audiologist wasn’t a young thing, either. But this man…whoa.
He’d been in the back of her mind ever since her failed second job. Meeting him had been the first time she’d felt feelings of attraction or interest in the opposite sex in ages.
This time, the atmosphere was quieter, calmer, and she wasn’t flustered or busy and could take the time to really look at him. He was tall, with olive skin and warm milk chocolate eyes. His face was clean-shaven, his hair ink-black and wavy despite its short length. He sported a very nice suit, a drastic difference from the biker attire she’d seen him in before. An expensive-looking watch was his only jeweled adornment. She’d checked.
He cleared his throat, bringing her back to earth. Kimberly realized he’d been waiting for her to respond. Her face heated with embarrassment. He was looking at her expectantly. What had he asked? Oh yeah, the online thing. No…
Flustered, she merely shook her head at him and reached into her back pocket. She had come prepared. She pulled out her trusty pad, welcoming an excuse to stop staring at him. Her notes were slightly damp from the sweat of her body, and she was reluctant to hand them over, but it was her story, the words she’d written for George. She could sit here all day and scribble in front of him or hand him this.
Deciding she’d rather he be staring at her notes than watching her write them, she handed them over. This way, she would watch him.
He took the notes, and his hand lightly brushed against hers in the process. Kimberly was surprised by the current that traveled up her arm, all the way to her shoulder, on that little contact.
I’m so glad I got contacts.
“Is this what happened to you?” His voice was soft, yet at the same time clear and masculine.
She nodded, very aware of his gaze on her until finally, he looked down at the papers he was holding. A small rush of air escaped her, and she allowed herself to relax. She’d been so conscious of what she must look like; hair tucked behind her aids, the red mark on her throat. It was unnerving having such a handsome man staring at her.
Now, she sat back and stared at him as he read, noting the crease that appeared between his brows, the cleanliness of his fingers turning the pages, the rugged line of his jaw.
Suddenly therapy didn’t seem so bad.

Come Fly With Me by Judith Whitmore

This book has it all:
A woman finding herself. Married to a very wealthy man, you'd think Kate has it all. But in truth, despite her riches, she seriously lacks some of the most important things: her husband's love and respect. He just wants a woman at home. He doesn't want her to work or anything else. She rebels in her own way by having a special charity program, but it's not enough. But when she finds what she wants, she has conflicting emotions. After all, she wants her handsome flight trainer, but she's married.
The infidelity in this novel was tastefully done. I'd like to put that out there. Don't believe me? Read it for yourself. You'll see what I mean.
A man learning to trust again. Daredevil pilot Rick doesn't have much love for women, just their bodies, and there's a story behind this...but Kate gets past his rough exterior.
Conflict. Hey. Crap happens. Some major stuff goes down in the last quarter of the book and it just may keep the two lovebirds apart.
Adventure. Incredible flying scenes throughout the novel add that feeling of adventure long before the ending involving a third-world country, stolen rubies, and jail time. We almost learn to fly the Lear along with Kate. When Rick teaches her take off with a stalled engine, when she has her flight test, my heart was pounding along with her.
I could sit here all day telling you why I enjoyed this book. At first the heroine wasn't as feisty as I like, but by the end, she was the kind of woman who tells off customs officials for mistaking her for a flight attendant. Readers will watch Kate grow, come out of her shell, gain some confidence, find love, and learn to forgive.
Once I started this novel, I couldn't put it down. I read it in a day. That's how hooked I was.
Five stars. I received this from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Ask Away Sunday: How My Dad AFFECTED Me With Stories of Joan of Arc and the Interesting EFFECTS of Onions

The personal, from a lady named Dee: What made you want to write about strong women?
That's a good question. The answer may be a bit long-winded. Bear with me... Growing up, my father was always talking about women like Joan of Arc, strong women who fought for their beliefs and rights. Now, looking back, this seems odd as my dad is an old-fashioned type...you know "women belong at home cooking dinner and raising babies.." So how did he end up raising a feminist? And why?

He knew the prejudice I would face and worked daily to prepare me. And sometimes he did this by inspiring me with stories about strong women facing adversity. By the time I started school, I was dying to know more about these women. When a class assignment was "write a report about the American Civil War", I chose women spies and researched them. Every chance I had, I was reading about strong women. My choice of fiction literature was always girl sleuths and the like. Strong girls.
And...now I try to write them.
Question two, from Morgan: Is there some easy way to differentiate between affect and effect that is easy to remember? I find myself vacillating over the two words most of the time. I understand the difference in their meaning, but I can't make anything stick in my head to remember it. :(
Hum. Excellent question. I honestly didn't come up with a cute riddle or anything. I learned this rule by repeating weird stuff over and over in my head till it came to naturally.
First of all, though Morgan already knows this, I'll share it here for those who may not know. Affect is a verb. Effect is a noun. The two are easily confused. Below is a correct way of using the two words.

If I call you bad names, I affect (evoke an emotion from) you. The effect (result): you cry.
Just in case the onion sentence doesn't do it for you, I did a little research to see if anyone else had a cuter way of remembering this rule. Grammar Girl does. She even has a little graphic, but I won't steal it. Click on the name to see her post about this rule.
Her sentence:
The arrow Affected the Aardvark. The Effect was Eye-popping.
Notice a-a and e-e.
But if the onion sentence stays with you, feel free to use it.
Onions affect my digestive system. The effect is bad gas.
Thank you, Morgan and Dee, for your questions. Got a question for me? Use the Ask Away Sunday form in the sidebar and I'll do my best to answer.

Meet the Stars & Judges of The Next Bestseller

I made one. It's called The Next Bestseller and the format of the show is modeled after Ink Master, a personal favorite of mine. There are three judges, all related to the literary world. The head judge has her own TV show and book club. Judge number two is a bestselling romance author. Judge number three is a literary agent...and then we have the contestants.
They all face two challenges each per round. The winner of the first challenge is allowed to manipulate the second challenge, which determines who goes and who stays and in the end...who is the next bestseller--the winner of 100 grand, a publishing contract, and the title.
And here...I'd like you to meet the stars.
The head judge. The lady you don't want to mess with. She can make or break you.

The literary agent judge. I'd be careful with him. Maybe you perform well, win or lose, he may remember you...

Bestselling romance novelist, Nicole comes off as the "nicer" judge, but the woman made it to the top somehow and nice doesn't cut it.

The contestants. Felicity wants to win. She's always wanted to write and she wants to honor her dead parents. Nobody--not even a good-looking man--is going to stand in her way.

Roy, former military and no-nonsense. Don't underestimate a Vietnam vet.

Victor. The handsome Latino has to win. There's no question. He needs the money to care for his mother.

Arnold is the youngest and a possible shining star in the horror industry...if he can make it to the finale.

Dez...he's got an attitude and he's determined to win even if he has to fight dirty.

Carmen...she's tough and she's got a lot to prove. Fighting for women everywhere, she's determined not to go down. Will her attitude cost her or push her to the top?

Tiffani wants to win this to prove everyone else wrong about the erotic industry. It's real, solid writing...it is! Her and Felicity get off on the wrong foot and emotions run high...

Based on the images and their quotes alone, who do you think is going to be the next bestseller?
