How "surfing" works in Baja Smugglers
PIX of the DAYFunny how we use "surfing" in Baja Smugglers. I wanted the trip to be fun, and since Baja has surf I figured we'd give that a go. I also wanted it to be our cover, our visually obvious reason for going into places with high narco activity. The idea was that if we could brand ourselves as harmless surfers, we might just get some smuggler to talk to us. It worked. And it's now episode 3. When the ocean almost looks out of place
PIX of the DAYAfter a day of talking to some fishermen we decided to walk on top of this Baja mesa. The view was breathtaking. And the ocean almost looked out of place in the waterless land. (Just posted this PIX on Instagram @theaizenstat ... But I thought the square crop just didn't do it justice. Here it is in full view.) Photo by Derren Ohanian / http://www.dnaimagery.com/

Atomic fire commin' at ya
PIX of the DAY: Mr Luis standing over the fire. He held this for 30 seconds as the desert wind blew the flames around him - but never in one spot long enough to burn. Blacken sky here. Moonrise a-comin' tmr - for sure. Photo by Derren Ohanian / http://www.dnaimagery.com/

Atomic fire in Baja
PIX of the DAY1 min camera delay on this one. Out in the Baja night, with the fire and the stary night. About 1 hour from when this PIX was taken the full moon peaked over the mountains. Will post that tmr. Photo by Derren Ohanian / http://www.dnaimagery.com/

Way out in the wilderness
Driving through the Baja desert we decided to stop and take a few pictures. I really like following the dirt road in the background. What a place. Photo by Derren Ohanian / http://www.dnaimagery.com/Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook page. Follow me to see more!

The Tractor Scene
PIX of the DAYA random tractor, broken down, hours from a paved road and in the middle of the Baja desert. This is one of my favorite parts in our documentary. Here we talk with a dude named Ruben who tells about a "far away fish camp" known for drug smuggling. Without this random encounter we wouldn't have been able to interview a smuggler in our film. Breakdown in the Baja desert
PIX of the DAYWe continued down the dirt road and into the lawless Baja desert. After hours of not seeing anyone, driving up and down through cactus fields, we rolled right into this crazy scene: 3 desert crusted dudes fixing their tractor. Totally in the middle of nowhere, we stopped to see if we could help them. (Will tell tmr what happened in PIX of the DAY) Photo by Derren Ohanian / http://www.dnaimagery.com/ — with DnaImagery Santabarbara.

Into the lawless Baja desert to talk about drugs with drug smugglers
PIX of the DAYWe just left a panga smuggling port in North Baja and are headed into the lawless desert to interview a dope grower. What we learned is that all the marijuana that gets loaded onto pangas (and ends up in the United Stats) is grown out here. In this PIX we just hit the dirt and I'm draining our cooler. It's about 95 degrees. And we're still a little unsure about just venturing into the middle of nowhere and bringing up drugs. Wouldn't you?
