A Streak of Cowardice

I must admit, I am terribly torn. There are times when I cringe at the thought of others reading my writing. It is intimate, and I'm an introvert, one not completely comfortable with sharing such things. I decided to publish in spite of that fact. I consider myself to be a brave soul for the most part. But there is a streak of cowardice in me. The coward doesn't want to know what others think of my writing. But the brave soul in me . . . is dying to know.

Happiness is . . .?

I've come to find that, most of the time, happiness is . . . a choice.

Who's in charge here?

It's kind of scary how my characters seem to have a mind of their own. I try to take them in one direction, and they refuse to go. I like to think I'm in charge. I'm the one with my fingers on the keyboard. But it seems as if most of the time, my characters are leading me.

Fighting Fear

It is perfectly natural to feel fear. Consider it a challenge. Confront it, attack it, defeat it. If you allow it to paralyze you, you have a problem.―Fawn Bonning

New York Book Festival Competition

I'm proud to announce that The Heart of Hannen was awarded runner-up in the 2014 New York Book Festival Competition in the category of romance. The Leader of Lors came in right behind it with an honorable mention.

What is romance?

What is romance?

I think we can all agree that romance is subjective. The definition of romance may vary greatly from person to person. This said, everything you read beyond this point is purely my own personal view of what I consider to be romance. This should give you a good indication of whether or not you will enjoy my writing.

The very reason I became an author was because I couldn’t seem to find romance novels that were satisfying to me. Sorry fellas, but I’ve yet to find a male author who can write satisfying steamy romance scenes. It’s no fault of your own. Your brains are wired in such a way that render you incapable of this feat. That especially includes my favorite author, Stephen. Yes, he is the king of horror, but he’s horrid at romance. And I was surprised at how many fellow female authors bungle those scenes as well. I personally don’t want to read about the curly hairs of his armpits or the delineation of his ‘manhood’. Manhood? Really?

I have no desire to read something that is crude or vulgar. Use the C-word to define genitalia (female or male) during those love scenes, and you’ve lost me entirely. That’s porn, not romance. And God forbid, don’t throw the F-bomb in there. That’s just effing wrong.

Call me old-fashioned, but I believe those romantic scenes should be tasteful. In my opinion, metaphors and similes are perfectly acceptable.

He had become the raging river―ruthless, relentless, tossing her hopelessly, battering her body, forcing out hoarse cries.

A well-written love scene should be beautiful and passionate. I want to be left breathless. I want my heart to hammer, my face to flush. I want to need a cigarette when I’m through, and I don’t smoke.

I prefer to label my writing as erotic romance as opposed to erotica. Yes, it is intended for adults and I always let my readers know it contains mature content, but it is tastefully written.

The Rhythm of Writing

Perhaps it's because I was a singer for so long, my writing must flow like a song. I will rewrite a sentence again and again until it has the right rhythm.

The Atriian language

In regards to the Atriian language in The Atriian Trilogy. It is really quite simple, so don't be put off by it. The Atriian language is 95 percent English. Of the other 5 percent, 4 percent is self explanatory, and you will find a dictionary in the back of the book for the remaining 1 percent.
