The Case of the Missing Monkey and other short mystery stories

An Accidental Detective short story plus bonus material

Get a free short story and bonus material when you sign up for Kris Bock's newsletter.

This free collection starts with a ten-page mystery short story set in the world of “The Accidental Detective” series, followed by information about the first books in the series, Something Shady at Sunshine Haven and Something Deadly on Desert Drive, plus the first chapter of book 1. After that are three fun, short stories originally written for children.

The Accidental Detective series: War correspondent Kate Tessler has followed the most dangerous news stories around the world. But can she survive going home?

Book 1: Something Shady at Sunshine Haven - out April 7

War correspondent Kate Tessler has followed the most dangerous news stories around the world. But can she survive going home?

Injured in a bombing, Kate returns to her hometown in Arizona to recover. For the first time in her life, she's starting to feel her age (49), even though she's living like a teenager again: staying with her father, trying to understand why her sister resents her so much, and running into people who still think of her as Kitty.

Seeing her mother in an Alzheimer's unit is the hardest part – until an old friend asks her to investigate suspicious deaths at that nursing home. Is a self-appointed "Angel of Mercy" killing patients to end their suffering? Are family members hastening their inheritance? Is an employee extorting money and removing the witnesses? Kate uses her journalism skills to track clues, but the puzzle pieces simply won't fit.

If Kate can't uncover the truth, her mother could be next on the killer's list.

Praise for Something Shady at Sunshine Haven

I just LOVE your protagonist and the cast of characters that you built.” – Sinclair Jayne, author

“A really fun read and the perfect set up for a great series.” – Lisa Honeycutt, author/illustrator

“Book one was a good read, and I’m looking forward to a series with Kate Tessler.” – Teresa Fannin, writer

“So much fun! Her wry notes always make me laugh. The mystery seems so impossible to solve. You have so many details and such a limited ability for the heroine to get answers, which makes the story even more engaging. I love her dry sense of humor.” –  Emma J. Wallace, author

Whispers in the Dark is action-packed #RomanticSuspense, now only #99cents or free in #KindleUnlimited! #Romance #Suspense #romsuspense #RomanticSuspense

“Whispers in the Dark has a hefty dose of adventure and mystery, as well as a strong main character. There were plenty of plot twists, and the ending was not at all what I anticipated! I highly recommend this author!”

Whispers in the Dark is action-packed romantic suspense, now only 99 cents or free in Kindle Unlimited! Visit Kris Bock’s Amazon US page or Amazon UK page. (For other countries click here.)

"The glimpses of life in the southwest and the ruins of the Ancient Ones were fascinating. The main character’s emotional journey is well-drawn and satisfying. A quick read that should please plenty of readers!"

Young archeologist Kylie Hafford heads to the remote Puebloan ruins of Lost Valley, Colorado, to excavate. Her first exploration of the crumbling ruins ends in a confrontation with a gorgeous, angry man who looks like a warrior from the Pueblo’s ancient past. If only Danesh weren’t so aggravating… and fascinating. Then she literally stumbles across Sean, a charming, playful tourist. His attentions feel safer, until she glimpses secrets he’d rather keep hidden.

The summer heats up as two sexy men pursue her. She finds mysteries – and surprising friendships – among the other campground residents. Could the wide-eyed woman and her silent children be in the kind of danger all too familiar to Kylie?

Mysterious lights, murmuring voices, and equipment gone missing plague her dig. A midnight encounter sends Kylie plummeting into a deep canyon. She’ll need all her strength and wits to survive. Everything becomes clear – if she wants to save the man she’s come to love and see the villains brought to justice, she must face her demons and fight.

Whispers in the Dark, romantic suspense set in the Four Corners region of the Southwest, will appeal to fans of Mary Stewart, Barbara Michaels, Nora Roberts, and Terry Odell. This title stands alone and is not part of a series.

“The southwest setting and attention to authentic details will make the reader feel like he/she knows the place once the book is finished. This story has a few twists and turns that catch you off-guard and provide a satisfying finish.”

It's #RomCom season - give the gift of a prequel to a favorite classic #RomanticComedy movie, Sweet Home Alabama! These #YoungAdult novels are fun for all ages. #BookBuzz #Holiday #GiftIdeas

Introducing the new romantic comedy series featuring teen “Felony Melanie” before the events of the movie Sweet Home Alabama. Readers ages 12 and up will enjoy reconnecting with their favorite characters from the Sweet Home Alabama movie. Head back in time to the early 1990s for this laugh out loud rom com based on one of the best rom coms of all time.

Visit the Amazon series page for Felony Melanie: Sweet Home Alabama romantic comedy novels or sign up for our Rom-Com newsletter and get Felony Melanie Destroys the Moonshiner’s Cabin. These first two chapters from the novel Felony Melanie in Pageant Pandemonium stand alone as a short story.

Before Melanie Smooter became hot fashion designer Melanie Carmichael, she was known as Felony Melanie, the teenage troublemaker of Pigeon Creek, Alabama. Aching to escape the boredom of small-town life, she gets into many reckless adventures. Her boyfriend, Jake, is always by her side – and the local sheriff is usually close behind.

Melanie’s mother has been shoving her into every beauty pageant within twenty miles since Melanie was a toddler. Melanie is getting a little sick of it. She’s on the verge of quitting when she qualifies for the Miss Alabama Princess Pageant in the big city of Mobile. The first prize scholarship could be her ticket out of Pigeon Creek, not to mention that one of the judges is a real, live New York fashion designer. The competition will be fierce. Can a “trailer trash” girl outshine the snooty debutantes?

Meanwhile, Jake and his friends go to Mobile to support Melanie – and to party in the big city. But when strange disasters befall pageant events, the gang suspects someone is sabotaging the contest. They try to figure who’s behind it and why, but it isn’t easy when everyone dismisses you as redneck kids

Melanie needs to prove herself on stage. Jake and the gang need to make sure she gets the chance. Can they show they’re more than what people see on the surface?

Is anybody ever ready for Felony Melanie?

Girls don’t do demolition derby. Everyone says so. But Melanie is tired of sitting on the sidelines. Why should the guys have all the fun? She can smash up a car as well as anyone!

The guys don’t want a girl intruding on their turf, and it’s not so easy for a broke teenager like Melanie to find and fix up an old car. She recruits some helpers and unearths an old, junked car, but everyone from Jake to the sheriff wants to keep her off the track.

Is the town ready for a female demolition derby driver? Is anybody ever ready for Felony Melanie?

Visit the Amazon series page for Felony Melanie:  Sweet Home Alabama romantic comedy novels.

A #Recipe from the Cat Caf: Bacon Nut Brittle perfect for #Christmas2021 gifts. Plus enjoy this #Romance series of #ContemporaryRomance #SweetRomance #CleanRomance

My cat caf series features a bakery and two fantastic bakers. So of course I must share recipes! The one below is perfect for people who like a little savory with their sweets. It's a nice gift for bacon-lovers who don't need a lot of stuff for the holidays. This will disappear in no time!
Bacon Nut Brittle RecipeCrunchy, salty, smoky, savory, and sweet. This combination of flavors makes for an unusual treat! You can use whatever nuts you prefer. If someone has nut allergies, use sunflower seeds or pumpkin seeds instead (or a vegan "bacon" alternative). If you don't eat pork, skip the bacon and try a mixture of different nuts and seeds to provide a variety of flavors and textures.
1/2 cup bacon crumbles (buy real bacon crumbles, or cook and cool 8 slices of thick cut, smoked bacon)1/2 cup water2 cups sugar1 stick unsalted butter1/3 cup light corn syrup1/2 teaspoon baking soda12 ounces roasted salted cashews1 teaspoon vanillacoarse salt
1.  Cook the bacon until crispy, cool, and chop into 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch pieces.2.  Lightly spray a baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray. Spray the stirring end of a large, heat-proof spoon as well. 3.  In a large saucepan, combine the following: water, sugar, butter, and corn syrup. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally.
Safety Warning: The heated mixture gets very hot and sticky. Do not let it touch your skin!
4.  Attach a candy thermometer to the pan. Cook the mixture over moderately high heat, stirring occasionally. Cook to 300F (adjusted for altitude if necessary), about 10 minutes. The caramel should be the color of a paper bag. Drizzle a bit of caramel from your spoon, and it should spin out a thread. 5.  Remove the pot from the heat. Carefully stir in the baking soda. This will cause the mixture to bubble. 6.  Stir in the nuts, vanilla, and bacon. 7.  Immediately pour the brittle onto the baking sheet. Use the back of the spoon to spread the brittle into a thin, even layer. 8.  Sprinkle with the coarse salt. Let cool completely, about 30 minutes. 9.  Break the brittle into large shards. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one month.
Coffee and Crushes at the Cat Caf: A Furrever Friends Sweet Romance What do you do when you meet the guy of your dreams? Set him up with your sister, of course.
