Writer Wednesday

Hi guys,

I’m Samantha and I come from another world – the original, old Silvery Earth, where people are immortal and never grow up. When I’m not switching bodies at will, I travel to other universes, especially books or movies. That’s how I met Rajveer the vampire, for example!

So, I’m taking over the interviews on this blog! And here I am, meeting people from other books/universes/whatever!

Now, let’s welcome today’s guest! Tell me a little about yourself (name, age…)

My name’s Trevor Dittmar and let’s just say I’m close to 100-years-old

Cool. Describe your appearance in ten words or less.

I’m 5’7 with a pigtail and perfectly dressed.

Mm, okay… Do you have an enemy or nemesis? If so, who are they and how did they become an enemy?

I’m a Tracker so I do have two enemies. Dangerous humans who are a threat to society and the Accurseds, vampires who refuse to change.

I think humans are always dangerous… vampires… not so much. Depends on the vampire, I guess. *shrugs* Would you kill for those you love? And would you die for them?

Absolutely on both.

Where do you live(world/town/whatever)?

I grew up in a chateau near Braunschweig, Germany, but I also live with my wife in Worthless, Nevada.

What a worthless name for a town! *winks* I get the castle was better! Are you involved in a relationship? If so, with who and what is it about them that you find appealing?

I am now married to Janna. When I first saw her, I was attracted to her beauty, to how she dressed, and to her luscious red lips.

Women look for Prince Charming, what do men look for? I guess you answered that! What is the biggest challenge you face in the story?

In this first book, it’s trying to play human all the time so Janna won’t realize what I really am. I just can’t lose her.

Ah, yes, trying to hide the truth from loved ones… Do you have a family? Tell me about them.

I have a mother, father, two brothers (one I’m sure is an ogre, one is super smart) and two sisters, along with a rather large extended family.

Wow! A very interesting family! Please give me an interesting and unusual fact about yourself.

Don’t tell Janna, but I come from a race known as Dimidiums although we refer to ourselves as Halblings. I’m half vampire and half human.

Don’t worry, my lips are sealed. What 2 or 3 questions do you wish I’d asked and what are your answers to them?

Where did my parents find my obnoxious brother Jeffrey? In a basket in front of an ogre cave, I’m pretty sure.

Why am I a Tracker? Because my father is the legendary Tracker of our race, and I wanted to follow in his footsteps.

Well, thank you, Trevor. I’m off to interview Janna now – I promise I won’t tell her your secret!

Hello there! Tell me a little about yourself.

My name is Janna and I’m 29-years-old. I was accused of killing my husband Jed. That’s how I met Trevor. He was sent to kill me for the murder.

I love tragic beginnings! Describe your appearance in ten words or less.

I’m slim with green eyes and auburn hair.

Sweet! What is your role in the story?

Trevor falls in love with me. He loves me so much, he’s afraid to tell me what he really is.

So you figured it out, huh? Why do men think we’re just blinded by love? Tsk! What is your relationship with the protagonist?

He’s my husband now, but he’s the best lover I’ve ever had.

*chuckles* That’s great! Where do you live?

I was from Nebraska, but when I was accused of murder, I moved to a town of 25 people, Worthless, Nevada.

Ah, yes, the worthless town. Are you involved in a relationship? If so, with who and what is it about them that you find appealing?

I’m with Trevor. I wish I knew what the attraction was. I just know that I can’t live without him.

It’s called LOVE with all CAPS, I guess… *shrugs* What is the biggest challenge you face in the story?

Accepting what he and his family are. After all, doesn’t being half vampire and half human make them monsters? Or at the least, freaks?

Nah. It depends on what you think is normal… Do you have a moral code?

I’m a good person. That’s just how I live, although I did steal a candy bar once.

LOL! Nobody is perfect! Please give me an interesting and unusual fact about yourself.

Well, I can’t give the other books away. Let’s say that I find something out about myself that gives me no right to call Trevor and his family monsters.

Ouch… What 2 or 3 questions do you wish I’d asked and what are your answers to them?

Do I have any talents? I’m the only woman able to keep Trevor in check.

Where would I like to spend the rest of my life? Why, in the little town of Worthless, Nevada of course.

Well thank you, Janna for putting up with me! I wish you both all the best… I might wander in your universe one day…

Sunday Surprise

Interview with Rajveer – excerpt from the novel coming out Nov.1st and available for preorder on Amazon, Apple US, Barnes&NobleKobo and Smashwords.

Rajveer“I am Rajveer of the Guhilas of Mewar. I belong to the kshatriya caste. I was born in mighty Chittor a couple of centuries before the advent of the Mughal emperors. My warrior father was killed when I was twenty-four, and my mother followed him on the funeral pyre. I was head of the family with three wives but no children – at least not from my first beloved wife.”

“I didn’t know Hindus could have more than one wife,” the young woman said.

“I could afford them. My father had only one, but since Charumati kept having miscarriages, she suggested I take a second and then third wife. I married Akshita after my father’s funeral and Enakshi three years later.”

(…)

“No, I don’t drink human blood unless I’m in the middle of a battlefield. I know it tastes better than animal blood and gives me more strength, but I couldn’t bring myself to have it again. I don’t need to suck anyone dry to feel fine, but I still don’t like the thought of draining another human being.”

“Cool.” She smiled at him. “Keep telling. So you were head of the house and had three childless wives. What happened? Did Emperor Akbar destroy your home or what?”

“Ah, no.” Rajveer looked at the waning crescent and concentrated on the past again. “I was born two centuries before him. I lived in Chittor, capital of the kingdom of Mewar. There was this foreigner hanging around the fort with what I assumed was his daughter, since she was much younger than him. He said he was a shaman from the west – he called himself a druid – and was seen mostly at night. I was on watch duty when he walked to me and talked to me. He could read my mind and showed me his power…”

“So what did the druid promise you?”

“You heard of druids?” He stared at her in wonder. She knew nothing of his country, but knew about Bran’s?

“Ancient sorcerers of the Celts… shamans of northern Europe who clashed with the power of the Greeks first and the Romans later. My geography and history of this world aren’t perfect, but I seem to know more than you do!”

She shot him an impish smile and he looked away, embarrassed. He should have followed Bran and Kaylyn away from Hindustan. He felt cut out and lost and wasn’t sure he fit in anymore.

“Anyway, the Celts are long gone now. I wonder how one of them became a vampire, though.” She shrugged. “Because that’s what he was, right?”

Desi vampire family col_resizeHe sighed. “Yes. Although he didn’t really say it this way. He told me he’d found a way of living forever. That if I was so afraid of never having children, he could make me and Charumati live forever and get out of the whole series of rebirths.”

“Oh, reincarnation.” She nodded thoughtful, but it sounded an alien concept to her.

“Well, the bulk of our prayers is directed either directly or indirectly at breaking the bonds of karma, escaping the snare of rebirth, restoring the original serenity of the undivided self by reuniting it with god. Except karma and dharma are linked, and there’s no real escape…”

“But he made you think there was.”

“Yes! I had already tried all the rituals and pilgrimages and everything I was supposed to do, and from what Bran said, it looked like I’d be immortal, invincible, and would be able to protect my women for the rest of my life.” He sighed and looked at the moon. “I should have asked more questions before consenting to receive his gift.”

“He called it a gift?” She scoffed. “Feeding on people’s blood? Although, as a warrior yourself, you were used to killing people…”

“But not to feed on people’s blood! He gave me strength and longevity, but the price…” He shook his head, dejected. “Not that I really kill anyone, not in one sitting, but still…”

Rajveer the Vampire is now available on Amazon for pre-order. Amazon India has the price of INR250.

Preorder on Apple US, Barnes&NobleKobo and Smashwords. The price might go up on release date, November 1, 2015, so order it now.

Random Friday

Hello there. Tell me a little about yourself.

Marden – just Marden now. I’m about 30 years of age and well, my past is a bit shameful. For years I was a Witch-Hunter, a killer of mages and adepts. I killed for my duty, because I thought I was correct in doing so, because it was the law. I asked too few questions and believed too many easy answers. Now that man is dead. Now I am Marden, captain of the Tremellic Militia.

Mmm, witch-hunter… maybe I should turn you into a toad! *winks* Describe your appearance in ten words or less.

Human, sandy hair, a few scars on my face.

Do you have an enemy or nemesis? If so, who are they and how did they become an enemy?

That’s an interesting question, I used to think my enemy was magic and its users. I used to believe many lies. Now, well now I know better. I suppose my enemies now are the Order of Witch-Hunters.

You’ve just earned a few point! Now I actually like you! *grins* Would you kill for those you love? And would you die for them?

I thought I could not kill for someone I loved. I killed for duty – which is not the same, but now, yes I could kill for someone for whom I care. And I have.

Would I die? Yes, yes I would. A man can give his life for many reasons – the love or respect of another is not an unworthy death.

Wise man. Where do you live?

I live in Harkenen in the Tremellic Valley, before that I was raised in a small village by the Silver Sea and moved around quite a bit as a soldier.

Are you involved in a relationship? If so, with who and what is it about them that you find appealing?

It’s complicated. Let’s just say there is a woman. Whether it’s a relationship – that is hard to say. It’s not love, for either of us. Duty perhaps, guilt perhaps, but not love.

Interesting! What is the biggest challenge you face in the story?

Surviving. Finding out I’m not the man I thought I was. Finding the truth is not what it seems. Reality was quite a shock, I can tell you.

Do you have a family? Tell me about them.

I have a son. He’s a treasure and I don’t deserve him. Other than that I don’t. Not anymore. My brother was killed in a riding accident. He was always reckless. My parents? My father – well I think he still lives. I can never go home. I can never see my mother’s face again. It would be too dangerous. To them I am dead.

You have a son? What about the son’s mother? Never mind… Please give me an interesting and unusual fact about yourself.

I almost got eaten by a giant snake. Then I ate the snake.

Cool! What 2 or 3 questions do you wish I’d asked and what are your answers to them?

Why did I embark on my adventure?

Money, glory, duty, honour.

Where did I find the answer to a question I didn’t even know I was asking myself? A bridge of ice in a storm from hell. I had two choices – one would have been easy and resulted in promotion, renown and money; the other would mean probable death, and exile if I survived. I do not regret the choice I made.

Wow… I’m impressed. But here we have someone else! Hello, there! Tell me a little about yourself!

Commander Hendrick, of the Order of Witch-Hunters. I am forty. I command many cohorts of men.

Ooh, tough man. Describe your appearance in ten words or less.

Brown hair, human, well built.

I imagine the “well built” comes from years of weapon training… What is your role in the story?

I am a Witch-Hunter. It is my right, and my duty to uphold the law of Erana. I hunt mages, the filthy scum who pollute our land with their magic, and elves who bring the Plague. Elves must know their place or be taught it. Elves are nothing but slaves, they cannot be trusted.

If I destroy Lord Archos, if I find this elven city full of riches my career is assured. I’ll make High Commander and I’ll rid the land of its blight.

And I sure hope you fail! *glares* What is your relationship with the protagonist(s)?

He is my man. He works for me.

Where do you live(world/town/whatever)?

I live at the fort, but I have a home elsewhere. I am a very busy man, so do not see it much.

Are you involved in a relationship? If so, with who and what is it about them that you find appealing?

No. My career is my mistress. If I want a tumble, I take one. If there is a comely elf or mage brought in, she is mine to do with as I please.

*snorts* I had guessed that much What is the biggest challenge you face in the story?

Policing Erana is always a challenge. My biggest challenge? I could hardly tell many of my superiors or men about this elven city, if it didn’t exist or they failed to find it I would look a bloody fool. The Lord of Tremellic is no threat to me. He is just a mage, he will fall to magebane.

Do you have a moral code?

I do my duty. I uphold the martial law and protect the ordinary citizens, what is more honourable than that? I do no steal, I have no need to. I hang thieves.

Please give me an interesting and unusual fact about yourself.

I don’t like cats.

Meow! What 2 or 3 questions do you wish I’d asked and what are your answers to them?

Why is magic illegal? Because the elves and mages brought war, they brought Plague and almost destroyed us all. Magic is dangerous – it must be eradicated.

Why do I think Lord Archos has not been challenged before? Because like many nobles he pays bribes. Certain members of the Order are not above bribery. He hides in his valley and thinks he is safe. Because the Order is undermanned. Because he has friends. I will find them.

Writer Wednesday

Before I vanish into offline-land (but don’t worry, there are scheduled posts coming), a recap!

FirebirdDTFWriting! Beautiful is off to betas so I can send it to mighty editor in early November. I’m quite happy with it (of course, it’s the latest baby!) because I’ve put in stuff that I usually don’t mention. Like favorite food and pets.

Publishing! Firebird is now out on all retailers. It’s a Silvery Earth novella, I thought it was time to leave the Star Minds universe for now! :)

Draving! S.K.Y.B.A.N.D. 15 is also out as single issue on DriveThruComics. In November you’ll get the Omnibus 3 and the whole graphic novel – the latter also in print, so you might want to wait! Aaand…

100I guess it’s self-esplanatory! ;) Not sure yet when I’ll publish them, though. And will start working on the alternative ending of Rajveer the Vampire as next drawing project.

Some writerly links to last you for the next two weeks – maybe more! :) Grab your writing planner at Writing World! I used it this year for the first time and it’s great! I jot down daily wordcounts, to-do things, ideas and for 2016 there’s even the submission sheets included!

Dealing with Success by Devyani Borade. Author Earnings… again by Kristine Kathryn Rusch. Which brings us to explore Tolino – a reminder there’s not just the US market now. Take me. I sell all over the place. All over the world. And an “old” (last August) post on social media snake oil – or what should you beware when marketing on social media.

Oh, and if you want to support a Kickstarter project, my cover artist and webmaster Silvano has this Dark Steam Tales up for funding… I didn’t do the translations on that one – I’m working on Evo-Z (so if the translation of Evo-Z are clunky you know who to blame)! ;) Oh, and if you want to read Evo-Z or back up this other project… one day the guy might be working on my project! :D

I’m going to a non-writing vacation, but to keep you inspired whil I’m away, here’s the last link: 21 quotes to reignite your passion for writing! Me? Don’t need them. I already know I’ll be itching to write the next story when I come back. And that’s why I don’t do NaNoWriMo… I write all year long – not every day, but all year long! ;)

Wishing you a happy week and end of the month… Will be back after Halloween! Have fun! :D

Sunday Surprise

Words of wisdom, writers on writing, whatever you want to call it… here’s some food for thought! Have a great Sunday!

What most writers need is to believe in their own work. The writers need to finish a first draft, spellcheck it, and hand it to a trusted first reader who is not a writer.

Let me repeat that. The last thing you want is a writer as your first reader.

A writer will critique. A reader will tell you if the book is a good read or not.

Will the reader be able to tell you how to fix the book? Hell, no. That’s not a reader’s job.

Generally, if the book fails, especially in areas like pacing, then the best thing the writer can do is start over. From scratch. Without looking at the previous manuscript.

Because we’re storytellers, not writers. A manuscript is the coded tool that we use to tell stories across great distances.

Kris Rusch

I get a lot of questions about how I write so much. (And takes weeks at a time off as I am doing now.) My response lately has been that I never look back. I never fix or rewrite. I do the best job I can do when writing a story or novel, then when a story or novel is done, it is done. Period.

I march forward and move to the next story or novel. So while others get a few books done because of all the rewriting and trying to make a book perfect, I get a dozen simply because I am stepping forward all the time. I write clean and the best I can the first time through.

So I will repeat my general answer to various questions about what to do with old work, meaning finished work.

When in doubt, write the next story.

Dean Wesley Smith

Q: So how do we survive this awful situation?

Joe sez: Easy.

1. Write good books. Books that readers love. Books they recommend to others.

2. Experiment. Try new things. If you aren’t failing, you aren’t trying.

3. Innovate. Start your own ebook company. Certainly some of you have ideas. Go do something about it.

4. Share what you know. That’s the point of life. Learning is only half the equation, you also have to pass it along so others can benefit.

If you don’t like how the way things are, do it yourself, and do it better.

Now I’m going to go back to writing. I suggest you do the same.

Joe Konrath

I want to wake up one morning and know how to write page one, or page 10, or page 250. But I never seem to know how to do it. Every book is different and takes a different structure, style, process, etc. And relearning how to write is where the insanity comes from.

– Sarah MacLean

True glory consists in doing what deserves to be written; in writing what deserves to be read

– Pliny the elder

The more you reason the less you create.

My name is Olek, I am also known as the Shadowdancer. My age? I suppose I’ve seen 40 summers or so. I am the man-servant of Archos, Lord of Tremellic. Although I have other more…unusual skills. I’m a thief and an assassin, a spy and a cheat. Those are among my better qualities (winks).

a lady in a medieval gown sitting on a stone and reading a book(chuckles) My kind of guy! Describe your appearance in ten words or less.

Black hair shot through with red and gold, half-elven, hazel eyes.

Do you have an enemy or nemesis? If so, who are they and how did they become an enemy?

The Order of Witch-Hunters and the slavers. I am a half-elf, an outlaw and an adept. I am illegal. In Erana elves are nothing, less than cattle. Archos treats me well, I am trusted and valued, but he is unusual in that. Most humans treat elves badly, after all we spread the Plague. It’s a lie, but a lie is often believed.

I am totally behind you. I’m considered a witch! Would you kill for those you love? And would you die for them?

Yes. Without a thought for my own life.

Where do you live?

I live in the Tremellic Valley, in the land of Erana. We are lucky, it is very secluded at the foot of the Jagged Peak Mountains, and circled by the Shimmering Forest. The Witch-Hunters rarely come. Or at least that used to be the case.

Book 2 EbookMm, maybe I should come and get rid of those Witch-Hunters! Are you involved in a relationship? If so, with who and what is it about them that you find appealing?

Ozena. She’s a strong, talented woman. She has spirit but she is also innocent in many ways. She makes me a better man. Often I think I’m unworthy, after all I have done. She seems to think otherwise, don’t ask me why.

I can’t blame her! You don’t seem that bad at all! What is the biggest challenge you face in the story?

Fighting slavers and Witch-Hunters. On our journey to the Shining Citadel we battle monsters, impossible creatures, and very many Witch-Hunters.

Sometimes following the orders of my master. He often has his own agenda which I cannot always fathom. He risks his life and his liberty. He’s a mage you see, and therefore his mere existence is illegal, as is mine. My life belongs to Archos, so on my own account I have no claim. If he were to die, the blades of the Shadowdancer would be aglow with vengeance. I’d have no purpose left if he were to fall…

Do you have a family? Tell me about them.

Ozena, Archos and Dii’Athella are my family. I have no blood family, my mother died many years ago, and to my knowledge I have no children.

LBTS Book IPlease give me an interesting and unusual fact about yourself.

I can call the shadows to my bidding.

That’s really cool! What 2 or 3 questions do you wish I’d asked and what are your answers to them?

Why do I do what I do? It’s simple. I, we, fight for freedom, for vengeance and for the honour of a land which has very little. We fight for those who cannot fight for themselves.

Wow, I’m impressed! A half-elf with all these talents… I really should check that book!

Barb’s note: Authors, you DON’T want Samantha messing with your worlds, trust me! Ask Joleene Naylor how it went when Samantha met her vampires!

Writer Wednesday

Aaand there’s a party on Facebook! It’s already started, you’ve missed half the fun! Now don’t miss tomorrow, when I’ll be there, answering questions and whatnot! Attend and win prizes! And cookies! And get to know a nice vampire writer and her fellow authors including yours truly!

Okay, enough sales copy already! Where was I? Ahem, yes. Writing. Finished both workshops and I now have 4 story openings that I shall write. Contemporary stories, so they’ll be bundled with others in the next contemporary title. Stay tuned.

But first I want to finish Beautiful (I love those guys so much that I’m adding two more chapters), and then I’m off to Japan, so I won’t be working on anything until November. Well, maybe I’ll write one of those shorts next week. But I also want to publish SKYBAND 15, so the lettering and formatting of that one come first! ;)

About my very own vampire, coming soon in ebook form, here’s my version again. From celebrity portrait to character portrait, Muse H becomes Rajveer, with special thanks to Photoshop! Lovely Saturday procrastination…

2015yellow&Rajveer_resizeThe writerly links! Do not submit to the new Star Trek Strange New Worlds. And some more Konrants. And a most interesting article on Lee Child and how the best selling author writes his mysteries. Which goes well with 5 observations on the evolution of author business models.

Now I’ll just run screaming back into my writing cave. Writing is fun. The rest is not! ;) But I’ll keep writing and trying to keep up with this new world of publishing. Next year I will increase my productivity again after filling my head with neat tricks and techniques at those workshops (I took 3 online workshops this year – more next year, I already have a wishlist).

I know my writing is changing, and I’m very happy about it. I’ve started learning again after stagnating over my “backlist” for four years, so… yeah, ready for the new beginning. Which doesn’t mean I’ll take down the old titles, but I’ll keep publishing new ones. This month there’s still SKYBAND 15 and Firebird. Next month Rajveer the Vampire and Beautiful. December contemporary stories and maybe another Silvery Earth novella.

And the Italian titles that I don’t mention on this blog. And the PODs I’ll do in November. And… well, that’s work, but whatever. The business part is my least favorite, but I can’t do without, so… onward! Have a great week! :D

Happiness is…

30whoa, looky look! That’s me thinking about SKYBAND 15 back in 2009! I’ve drawn that scene now! :D Still working on the chapter, though… coloring… and then lettering… and then publishing… happiness is… finishing! ;)

Happiness isAnd here’s the final panel (without the lettering) – 6 years later… I’m finally there! Happiness! :D
