Daryl Devore's Idle Thoughts on Erotic Notions

There are times when the words won't flow. I'm not talking writer's block - just a stall in the word flow.I posted a humourous vent on FB the other day about this. I couldn't write 2 words without erasing 1 or both. I am quite sure by the end of the day I had a negative word count.

I don't usually set goals. I'll set deadlines - like the bathroom has to be painted by Friday or I'd really like the finish writing this book by the end of the month. But the deadlines are these because I know something is happening - like the bathroom - maybe on Saturday we're having company

So what do I do when the words don't flow?
Confession time - I play games. My current favourites are Microsoft Solitaire, Mahjong, Tap Tiles, Puzzles and Bingo. (yes Bingo. It's dumb and fun.)

(forgive me Microsoft, I took the picture off your website.)

Why do I "waste" precious writing time doing something so frivolous? Or why don't I do something more productive - go for a walk - clean the house.

A- Trying to force the words only frustrates me and that leads me to chocolate and after this past Christmas, I could do with a bit less chocolate at the moment.

B - Not going off to clean the house or go for a walk. If an idea does strike I can switch to word processor and type away. (Going for a walk isn't high on the list at the moment as the temp started today above freezing and is plummeting - not just dropping. It is plummeting like a cannonball out of the sky!)

C - This is the important reason I like to play games. Without going deep into the biology - when you perform a mindless task - the creative center of your brain (or muse) can work on the "problem".  I'll be shifting cards in a game of Solitaire and suddenly the solution to the corner I wrote myself into pops into my head.

Thank you Microsoft. You've given me some fun times of idle playing and some moments of inspiration.

What little trick do you have to get past a hump in the writing road?

An excerpt from erotic medieval Black Dorn on WIP It UP Wednesday #Wipitup

Welcome to Erotic Notions and WIP It Up Wednesday. This snippet is a continuation from my erotic medieval romance - Black Dorn.

Set Up –
(for those who haven't started at the beginning – Duna means instructor –  so Duna Trea is Branwyn's instructor. A Dune is one who is to be instructed. Branwyn is a Dune. Gon means King and lastly Gon Dra means Heir to the Throne.)

Scene set - last week Brawnyn during Branwyn's lesson she was introduced to a naked male. The class did not go well. Branwayn was punished for her bad behaviour.

Tears trickled down Branwyn’s cheeks. "I failed today, Leah. I angered Duna Trea." "I have heard you can sing and play the spinet. Possibly you might entertain the gon after dinner?" "Oh, Leah, what a wonderful idea. Would I be allowed?" "Lay there and rest while I inquire." Branwyn dozed until Leah ran in. "Dune, it is done. You may play and sing in the quarters of the gon. There will be many people there, including the gon-dra. We must hurry and dress you, weave ribbons into your hair and drape jewels over your breasts." Two hours later, Leah and a guard escorted Branwyn to the gon’s main chambers. "I may not enter," whispered Leah. "But I will wait out here and listen." Branwyn trembled as she entered, crossed over to the spinet piano and waited. A distant voice commanded her to play. Looking at the hard stool, she hesitated. Settling herself on it, she stifled a cry, rested her fingers on the keys and played a lullaby she had learned as a child. Some of the people listened. Others continued to talk. With brief glances between songs, Branwyn was unable to find Malack. With such a commanding presence, she assumed he would not be difficult to find, even in a crowded room. Duna Trea appeared beside the spinet. "Come with me." Without question, Branwyn stood and followed with her head lowered and her hands behind her back. Trea stopped in front of the gon. Branwyn dropped to her knees. The gon chuckled. "Ah, Duna Trea. I see the young one is learning." "She was instructed today." "Let us see." The gon turned his head and looked at a far back corner. "Malack, come. The new dune was instructed. Let us see the marks left on that beautiful white skin." Malack rose, walked forward and stood next to his father. Trea whispered to Branwyn to stand and turn around. Her skirts were thrown over her head. The gon chuckled. "Beautiful, Duna Trea. You marked her well. Is she not beautiful Malack?" His son grunted. "You are jealous you did not mark her," teased his father. "Stand straight," commanded Malack. When she did, Branwyn found herself staring into his face. Her knees buckled, and her head swam. His strong arms caught her before she fell. "I apologize Gon-Dra." Trea lifted her hands to her chest. "She has had an exhausting day. I was taking her to her serving girl, but thought you might like to see her training." Malack looked down at her breasts. He shook his head knowing he should not imagine suckling those firm rosy nipples. With long strides, he followed Leah to Branwyn’s room and laid her on the bed. "Leah." "Yes Gon-Dra Malack." "Take care of her." "Yes, Gon-Dra Malack."

Best Selling Author D'Ann Lindun and The Cowboy's Baby

Blurb: At sixteen, unwed and scared, Cat O’Brien gave up her newborn daughter for adoption. Seventeen years later Eve reappears…pregnant.Tanner Burke never forgot his first love. Or the daughter he gave up at eighteen.Forced together for the sake of their pregnant teenage daughter, can Tanner and Cat find a way to forgive each other and fall in love again?

Excerpt:She grabbed the candy dish and peered through the peephole before sliding back the deadbolt. Someone stood on her porch, but Cat couldn’t make out any features through the tiny opening. She swung the door open and a gust of wind-driven snow blew in her face. The storm had picked up to be a regular winter gale, swirling snowflakes around them. Blinking, she looked around for small children, but only an adult in a heavy coat and a shawl covering most of the face stood there. Was this a teenager trick-or-treating? If so, as what? Obviously not a ghost or princess.“Can I help you?”The bundled-up figure mumbled something, but the words were lost in the wind. Cat struggled to hold the door with one hand, and held out the candy dish with the other. The stranger said something unintelligible. Cat raised her voice to be heard over the protesting shutters. “I can’t hear you.”The black scarf again muffled the answer.Cat shivered in the wind, but she was unwilling to let a total stranger in her house. This might be Granite, population eight hundred, but she had spent too many years in Denver to be careless. She motioned to the wicker chairs still sitting on the porch. “Step over here and tell me what brings you out in a storm.”Instead of moving toward the chairs, the stranger pulled the scarf from her face and striking blue eyes met Cat’s. “Are you Cathleen O’Brien?”“Yes.” A vague unease rose up Cat’s back. “Do I know you?”“No.” The girl jutted out her chin in an all-too-familiar gesture and shoved a wad of papers toward Cat. “But you gave birth to me.”“Oh, God.” Cat let go of the candy dish and it crashed to the floor, sending miniature candy bars and cheap plastic toys flying across the porch. Her knees threatened to buckle and she grabbed for the door. Was she hallucinating? How could this be? It wasn’t possible for the baby she’d given up almost eighteen years ago to be standing in front of her. She stared at the daughter she’d given birth to, but never seen. Her eyes, her nose…his mouth. She would not think about Tanner Burke.

Bio:Falling in love with romance novels the summer before sixth grade, D’Ann Lindun never thought about writing one until many years later when she took a how-to class at her local college. She was hooked! She began writing and never looked back. Romance appeals to her because there's just something so satisfying about writing a book guaranteed to have a happy ending. D’Ann’s particular favorites usually feature cowboys and the women who love them. This is probably because she draws inspiration from the area where she lives, Western Colorado, her husband of twenty-nine years and their daughter. Composites of their small farm, herd of horses, five Australian shepherds, a Queensland heeler, two ducks and cats of every shape and color often show up in her stories! D’Ann loves to hear from readers! Missing Scene from Protecting His Wolfe from the best selling boxed set Dangerous Intent

Six sit on the edge of your seat stories from some of suspenseful romances best-selling and award-winning authors...fall in love with dangerous men

Cooper’s Redemption by D'Ann Lindun

Disappear by Mary Martinez

Logan's Redemption by Cara Marsi

Nightmare in the Woods by Sue Fineman

Protecting His Wolfe by Melissa Keir

Secret Past by Anna Sugg

Thank you Daryl for having me on your blog. My short novella, Protecting His Wolfe is in the Dangerous Intent book bundle. Sexy dangerous men and the women they protect. I thought I’d share with your readers a special piece I wrote. It’s a missing scene from Protecting His Wolfe. It takes place between Jonah and his father, who we never get to meet in the novella. Jonah took on the mantle of becoming the parent to his two younger brothers after his parents’ deaths while he was still a teenager. I think this scene shows why Jonah would change his life and take on the additional challenges of raising his brothers and I hope you’ll get to know Jonah in Protecting His Wolfe as a part of the Dangerous Intent Book Bundle.
Missing Scene from Protecting His Wolfe:Jonah Pigg ran into the house and slammed the door shut.  The window on the front door shook from the force of his anger.  Jonah was determined not to cry.  Squeezing his face tight and his eyes shut, he bounded up the stairs to his room. Whacking the door shut with his foot, Jonah surveyed his sanctuary—his “man-cave”, his “safe-house”.  “This was the worst day of my life,” he screamed as the tears began to fall.  “I’m not a baby but it hurts so much.”Throwing himself down on his bed, Jonah let the tears come.  He was tired of being strong.  As the oldest of the three boys, he watched out for his brothers and shouldered his fair share of chores for a twelve-year-old.  It made him feel older and responsible.  But now he felt beaten and abused, whipped by the words of Steve Vincent.  “What does he know. Steve is such a little prick.” Jonah choaked out among the tears.  Wiping his nose with his arm, he sat up as a knock sounded on the door to his room.  “Yeah?”Jonah’s dad peeked his head into Jonah’s bedroom.  “Is it safe to come in?” he asked with a smile on his face.“I guess, but it’s been a bad day.”“I could tell.  The doors must have done something to upset you.  They were sure taking a beating.  Do you  want to talk about it?”“Not really…but Steve is such a jerk.  Do you know what he did today?  At lunch he stood up and recited the story of the Three Little Pigs in the cafeteria and when he got to the part about the pig who made his house out of straw, he said that the pig’s name was Jonah. Everyone was laughing at me.  He even started chanting ‘This little piggy went wee-wee-wee all the way home’.  I was so mad that I wanted to hit, punch or even kill him.  I knew that I shouldn’t use my fists, so I dumped my lasagna on his head.  Of course, I got in trouble with the principal, Mr. Stevens.  You would think that he would have understood.  Steve is such a idiot that he didn’t even get in trouble.” Jonah shared his day with the passion of a prize-fighter after a winning battle.  He never seemed to take a breath.“I see.  Steve sounds like a real loser.  I’m sorry that you  were teased. I’ve taught you to let it bounce off your back but this sounds like more than ordinary teasing.  It sounds like Steve has targeted you.  Maybe we can go to the basement later and practice throwing some punches.  It might help you feel better.  But I want to share a story with you about your Great-Grandpa Pigg.  It will give you a different perspective on things.”Jonah sat up and listened to his dad.  He was interested in hearing more about his family.  His dad didn’t really share much about his great-grandfather except that he had served in Vietnam and was a decorated veteran.“You knew you were named after your great-grandpa.  His name was Jonah too.  When you were born, we saw something in your face that reminded us of his strength and compassion.  Great-Grandpa Jonah was serving in Vietnam.  This was not a popular war.  Many people didn’t believe that the United States should have gotten involved.  But you couldn’t tell Great-Grandpa that.  He wanted to do anything he could to keep the world safe.  He was overseas and was working to help this Vietnamese family who lived in the jungle near the US base.  The family was trying to hide from the enemy and thought that by living nearby the Americans, they would be safer.  The father of the family would sometimes interpret for your great-grandfather’s unit.  In turn he used to sneak them his extra rations or would sometimes give them extra blankets, money, or whatever he could get.  One day when your great-grandfather was out on a recon mission, the enemy came in and slaughtered the family, right down to the sixteen-month old baby.  In blood on the people’s hut was the words ‘Evil American Pig’.  When your great-grandfather found out, he set out to track down those responsible.”“Did he kill the bad guys who killed the family?”   “Yes, your great-grandfather did find those responsible.  He refused to speak about what he did when he found them.  But the whole incident changed him.  When the war was over and he came home, he once explained the whole story to me.  He said that seeing the word Pig in a derogatory way, made him ashamed of his name until he settled the score.  When he made those men pay for what they did to that family, he celebrated in his name. He was a Pigg but a proud one.”“And I was named after him?” Jonah asked with awe in his voice.“Yes, but while your great-grandpa was recognized for his time in Vietnam and the work he did there.  He never forgot the family who paid the ultimate price for being a friend to him.  When people looked down on his name or teased him about it…he’d remember Vietnam. Soon he developed a sarcastic tone that kept other people away from teasing him about his name.  His tongue was as sharp as a tack and no one wanted to feel its sting.  Using humor to throw the other person off, was his way of coping with the teasing.  He never felt that his name was a bad one again.”“I want to be like him.  What can I do to not let the teasing bother me?”Wiping his face with his hands, Jonah looked up at his dad with red and tired eyes.  However, a smile was beginning to show on his lips.  That look of determination was there in his gaze as well.   “I will teach you how to use humor and sarcasm to put Steve on the offensive.  And I want you to always remember your great-grandfather.  His name wasn’t derogatory.  It was the name of a hero. Now, come on and let’s get some punches in before mom calls us to dinner.”Grabbing his son by the shoulders and giving him a hug, Mr. Pigg knew that this was only the beginning of a rough road for Jonah but hopefully he had given him a push in the right direction.  After all, family and honor are always the most important to the Piggs.

Protecting His Wolfe from Melissa Keir Blurb: Betsie Wolfe is a small-town girl who leaves her cozy little life for a job in the big city, never expecting to become a witness to a murder or face vicious threats.Detective Jonah Pigg is attracted to Betsie’s green eyes and small frame when he arrives on the scene of the murder. When the threats begin, he takes her into his home under the protection of the three Piggs who own the Pigg Detective Agency. It will take all his detective work to keep her safe from the killer.Passion has a way of igniting when people are under stressful situations, and lust leads Betsie and Jonah into each other’s arms. But is their relationship a matter of desire, or is it something more?

Daryl Devoe's A Kept Woman on Weekend Writing Warriors #8sunday

This week my 8 sentence snippet for Weekend Writing Warriors is from my erotic contemporary – A Kept Woman. Scene Set up –3rd week continuation of Arianne's catch Derek Davenport plan.Warning - Sexy Hot scene

Unhurried, she moved her head, gripping him with her lips and releasing it with a soft touch. After making a circle around him with her finger and thumb, she lowered her mouth as far as she could then continued the movement with her hand. Pulling her hand back up to her lips, she slid back to his tip then lowered her head and hand again. Her fingers reached between his legs and stroked his testicles. Goose bumps covered his body. When he tried to move she pressed him back against the elevator door. Using a light touch all the way through her coordinated stroke, she kept the pressure steady. He dropped his head as soft growls escaped from his throat.

Daryl Devore - A Kept Woman - A Little Sex on Saturday

WARNING - SEXUAL CONTENT
This is my own little private weekly meme showcasing some of the erotic sex scenes from my published works. This week a quickie from my erotic contemporary romance ...

Scene Set - Step 2 in Arianne's plan to trap Derek Davenport. NOTE - this is a 2 parter - the conclusion of the scene is next week.

Deciding to chance it, she led him to the bedroom then set her bag at the foot of the bed. He opened his mouth to speak, but Arianne placed a finger on his lips, signaling him to be quiet. Facing him, she removed his suit jacket, walked to the closet and hung it on a hanger. Tugging at the knot she released his tie and draped it over her shoulder. One at a time she undid the buttons of his shirt, and released his cuff links. Sliding her hands up his bare chest, she slipped her hands over his shoulders and pushed the shirt off his body. It dropped to the floor. She picked it up, placed it and the tie on another hanger and the cuff links on the dresser. With the same care she removed his shoes, socks and dress slacks, leaving him in his boxers. She pointed to the bed and signaled for him to roll onto his stomach. Afterward, she opened her purse, and took out a bottle of musk scented body oil. Pouring a quantity into her palms, she cupped it until it had warmed, then dribbled it around his back and shoulders. Her finger tips spread the oil over his bare skin. Kneading the shoulders and upper back she felt his muscles loosen. She worked her fingers down his muscled shoulders and arms. She worked until his brow relaxed and his breathing calmed. “Roll over.”He tucked his arm under and flipped himself over. Arianne opened up the gym bag she had placed on the floor next to the bed and pulled out two long silk sashes. His eyes popped open. “Trust me?” Grasping his right hand, she tugged until he got the message and sat up on the pillows. Arianne could see that Derek’s curiosity as well as his libido were becoming aroused when she secured his hands to the bed post—not with blood halting knots just silken restraints, like the material of the sashes. His focus remained on her as she repeated the same maneuver to his legs using the longer sashes. When he was secure and unable to move his limbs, Arianne stood next to the bed and unbuttoned her blouse. She pulled the material opened revealing a sexy, white, lace bra. Placing the palms of her hands on her breasts, she alternated between cupping her breasts and squeezing them. She slipped her right hand along the white fleshy mound of her breast. Derek watched as her fingers disappeared underneath the white lace and fondled her nipple. Her left hand slipped inside and teased her other nipple. Easing her hands back out, she slipped her fingers under the bottom band of her bra and pulled it up over her breasts exposing them. With her breasts free, she cupped and squeezed, rubbed small circles and rippled her nipples between her fingers. Her words were breathless and low as she said,  “The skin is so soft. And my nipples are so round and firm, and pink. Do you know what they like?” Her actions matched her words. “They like to be rubbed ever so lightly. Like this. And they love to be teased—twisted between my thumb and finger—like this. They also adore pain. Pulling the nipples like this, stretching just enough to cause pain, but never enough to make me cry. See what it does. It makes them grow firm. Hard as marbles against my soft flesh.”Mesmerized, Derek’s gaze never left her breasts. Arianne doubted he’d even blinked. She climbed onto the bed near his feet and knelt. Her breasts hung a breath away from his legs. “Besides being caressed they also like to stroke things.” She bent down until her right nipple grazed the skin on his left shin. Moving back and forth, languorously and sensually, she let it slide against him, and then moved over to his right leg. “Can you feel how hard my nipple is? A perfectly firm nipple to slip between two soft, wet, hungry lips. Wouldn’t you agree?”“You aren’t going to leave me here. You are going to let me play?” His voice was husky.“Today you’re a spectator. When you’re good, I’ll give you small prizes. Like this.” Crawling up the bed, she held her index finger near his mouth. He opened his lips and she placed her finger inside. He closed his lips around it. Withdrawing it, she rubbed her nipple with the moistness. “They like to be sucked, but they aren’t big enough for me to do myself, so I’ll have to settle for this.” She placed her finger in his mouth, then stroked her other nipple.Closing her eyes, she lost herself in her fantasies and touches. Her hands rubbed, caressed, teased, pulled and stroked her breasts and nipples. Heat and moistness begin to build between her legs. Reaching behind, she unclasped the bra, dropping it and her blouse to the floor. “I could spend hours playing with my breasts. I could get some ice, or hot wax or nipple clamps. Their desires are only limited by my imagination. But something else is crying out for attention.”

Second Week Erotic Notions is on Book Boyfriend Cafe

This week -  There are subtle, and some not so subtle ways to attract a man using words and body language. How did your heroine use these techniques to help seduce the hero?

Capri didn't seduce Thall in the proper sense of the word. Thall is a son of the Fates and Capri is under his domain to be watched and assisted when needed – ie – Let the Fates decide. Capri is a busy corporate executive and divorced after a bad marriage. Her sexual inhibitions have grown as a result of the failed marriage and she has burrowed herself into her work. Which is how she accidently seduces Thall. He job is to help her and her problem is her sexual repression, so he needs to awaken her lust and while he is doing that he falls in love.
Scene set- Kat, Capri's best friend, has dragged Capri to a sex toy convention. We stepped into a display area. A gray-haired lady with silver-rimmed glasses walked over to Tee. They did the double cheek girl-kiss thing. "Patsy, this is Kat and Capri. This is their first time here.""Welcome to 'Patsy's Party'. Are you looking for anything in particular? To please yourself or that special other?""I want toys for me." Kat's cheeks flushed, and her eyelids were wide open. I think she was panting. "There is no special other for either of us at the moment. But we are both actively looking." Patsy glanced at me. I did a gasping fish impression, then I heard it again."Buy something fun, something erotic and something dangerous."I spun and looked around. No male stood near us and the little brunette, who was looking at a sex manual, couldn't have a voice that deep. A chill slithered down my spine. I started to tell Kat what I'd just heard, but I stopped. She'd just have some totally plausible explanation and somehow I didn't think hearing voices at a sex toy convention had any possible sane reason. And I wasn't about to admit I thought I was going crazy."Well then, let's start with dildos. Every girl's best friend." Patsy led us toward a shelf covered with phallic pieces of all sizes and colors. She began her sales pitch by picking up a largest penis I have ever seen. "This is our best seller, Mr. Monster Dong, guaranteed to drive you to new heights of sexual satisfaction. This fat boy starts at eight inches and gets bigger so you experience the feel of a really big cock. And best of all, this bad boy never goes soft! The three pages of instructions, which give a wide range of self-satisfying suggestions, are included."I thought Kat was going to have an orgasm on the spot. She squealed three times during the description and practically ripped the thing from the woman's hands."If you are into the more sensuous." She picked up a glass dildo. "This little baby is called A Woman's Delight. The latest in the glass line. Its ridges and g-spot teasers are designed to heat up your playtime. I know what you're thinking, but it's completely non-porous, so it stays germ-free.""No. No." I waved my hand at it. "I'm more worried it'll break. I mean, it's glass. Idle Thoughts on Erotic Notions

So as I write this it is cold COLD COLD! COOOOOOOOOOOLD.
I've often wondered why my ancestors didn't pack up and move somewhere further south where it's warmer. Like the Cayman Islands.

We've visited the Cayman Islands a few times and loved it. It's a great spot for scuba divers which my hubby, dad and daughter are. Mom and I stay on the beach and soak in sunshine.  I do snorkel and have learned a valuable lesson snorkeling. You can't say, "Barracuda!" with a snorkel in your mouth.
Try it. Notice on the B there is a puff out. Well, your snorkel pops out of your mouth. I did learn to grip it with my teeth. I also learned I don't like being followed by a barracuda. Yes, I am bigger than it - but it looked mean.

I used the Caymans in one of my stories. I thought it would be a wonderfully exotic locale in an erotic book.

What wonderfully exotic place have you visited. Have you ever used a place you visited in a book?

See you next week.

Branwayn's first lesson about men on WIP It Up Wednesday #Wipitup

Welcome to Erotic Notions and WIP It Up Wednesday. This snippet is a continuation from my erotic medieval romance - Black Dorn

Set Up –Innocent Branwyn's training continues. Branwyn is entering the Instructing room  - where she will be trained. Branwyn is still exposed from the waist up as instructed by her teacher - Duna Trea. Trea speaks first.

(for those who haven't started at the beginning – Duna means instructor –Duna Trea is Branwyn's instructor. A Dune is one who is to be instructed. Branwyn is Dune Branwyn. Gon means King and lastly Gon Dra means Heir to the Throne.)

"Good morning, Branwyn. Are you rested?"She entered and stood before the duna. "Yes. Did you pass a restful night?"Trea nodded. "I am pleased you are obeying my command. Today we are working in another part of the castle. Walk with your hands behind your back. Eyes lowered."Branwyn followed Duna Trea through a confusing channel of hallways. "This is one of the dune training rooms. There are six different rooms."Branwyn stepped inside and stifled a gasp. Chained to the wall was a naked man. His arms and legs were spread. He was blindfolded.Try as hard as she could, Branwyn could not pull her gaze away from the sight of what was between his legs. Her hand began to reach for it. Branwyn inhaled and clasped her hands together."Today’s lesson. This is a man."Branwyn held back a chuckle at the obviousness of Trea’s statement.Trea grabbed his penis. "This is his manhood. It is what he uses to pleasure women." She flicked it with her finger. "It is now soft, but with a little effort it becomes big and straight. Touch it."I must not. It is wrong. You must. That was your old life. Now you live in Black Dorn. You are a dune. Tragor. Branwyn stroked it with the tip of one finger. It is so smooth. She suppressed a giggle. "Now wrap your fingers around it like this." Slowly Branwyn obeyed Trea. "Yes, That's it. Now slide your hand up and down. See how it responds and grows. Feel it harden." "It grows long and thick. And look…the tip is peeking out of my hand.""Yes, this is a very nice one. It is what will be inserted into your pleasure hole.""I do not understand."

Excerpt:Zachary sighed at the calendar entry in his phone, which was reminding him for the third time about Reese’s upcoming birthday. And it wasn’t just any birthday—she was going to be thirty. There were perks to dating a doctor—the uniform was pretty hot, for example—but when that doctor had no particular fondness for jewelry, flowers or chocolates, buying her presents was nigh-on impossible. And because of her work schedule, a surprise weekend away was out of the question. He’d long since learned to always keep the receipts. Most people get their partners something to do with their hobbies or interests. However, Reese was even awkward in that regard. Her main hobby was so complex that Zach didn’t have the first idea what to get her to do with it—Reese was an uber-geek. Films, graphic novels, collectibles, all that jazz.Obviously he could just ask what she wanted, then go out and get it, but then it wouldn’t be a surprise. And it was too easy—he wanted her to know he’d really made the effort.Snoozing the calendar reminder once more, Zach threw the phone onto the sofa, then walked over and started rooting through their combined film collection for something to watch after dinner, which was almost ready. Reese was on-shift at the hospital until silly o’clock, so he had the house to himself and could watch whatever he liked. An action movie it was, then.Running his fingers along the spines of the DVDs and Blu-rays, he suddenly paused. The Avengers leaped out at him, for some reason. He’d seen snippets of it before, as Reese watched it pretty frequently. The parts he’d seen hadn’t looked too bad, actually. It was essentially an action film, he decided, but with superheroes in it.He pulled the case off the shelf, an idea beginning to form. Maybe if he watched it beginning to end, he’d seen what drew Reese into that world so much, why she was so fascinated by the films, the graphic novels and so on. Even if he didn’t get it, though, maybe it would still give him some inspiration for a gift. He had nothing better to do that evening, in any case, so it was certainly worth a try. After putting the disc in the player, he headed into the kitchen to see how his dinner was coming along. A meal in front of the television was the order of the day, it seemed.A few minutes later, he settled onto the sofa with his lasagna and garlic bread, a bottle of beer on the table next to him. Time for some Avengers action.Within half an hour, he’d ascertained that the film wasn’t just for geeks. In fact it was easy to see why it had such a wide appeal—the cast was supremely attractive, whatever gender you were into, the plot was interesting and the dialogue seriously witty. He’d already developed quite the crush on the Black Widow, and Nick Fury’s right-hand woman had a lovely pert backside.Trying to put himself in Reese’s shoes, Zach looked at the male characters. Okay, when it came to this film, straight women clearly had more eye-candy than they knew what to do with. He vaguely remembered a bunch of crazy stuff going around on the Internet about Loki—even the villain of the piece had sex appeal, for heaven’s sake! So much so that it had spilled over into even Zach’s limited social media presence. He barely used Facebook, and he’d never gotten the hang of Twitter. And yet he knew about the rabid fangirls. That was another score for The Avengers, then—truly mass-market appeal. If only there were mass-market gift-buying options.Sighing, he tried to empty his mind and concentrate on the film. The more he tried to force an idea to present itself, the less likely it would be to happen. He’d just enjoy the entertainment and keep his fingers crossed that his subconscious provided something useful.Once he’d made the decision, it wasn’t difficult to get sucked back into the narrative. It was engaging, easy-going and fun. Zach surprised himself by thoroughly enjoying the entire thing. Reese would be pleased when the next film came out at the cinema and he offered to go along with her. He’d keep his new found admiration quiet for now, though. He didn’t want to arouse her suspicions, although she was bound to know he was planning something for her milestone birthday. The question remained—what the hell could he do or buy to blow her away?
