THERE'S NOTHING LIKE SUMMER: Okay, it's really as sweltering hot as Hades...and there's quite a few flying, pesky bugs buzzing around, and man that wretched humidity can smother a mortal where they stand. But still, there are quite a few things about summertime that we must never fail to forget.
Have you ever witnessed the way the sun melts when it extinguishes its flame in the coolness of the ocean? What about the bloom of a perfect, English rose? Then there's the refreshing taste of an ice cold mint julep, a juicy sno-cone, or a bright colored popsicle whetting our whistle. You can't forget the slices of watermelon, the BBQ's and strand lit barn dances, with plenty of hot dogs, hamburgers, and Grandma's famous macaroni salad to pass around.
And then there's love...young, sweet ripe kisses by the bushelful. The feel of the one you love pressed against you in a lover's tender embrace. The wedding march down an aisle in the last week of June. Cincada's twanging their secret storm songs, bringing the promises of whooshing winds and pouring rain.

A huge labrador lover, she is also mom to yellow lab Magnus and to the very naughty (and huge) white Labra-doodle puppy Brody.
Hobbies include writing passionate love stories that involve chivalrous characters, dashing adventure, forked humor, and the ever-true good vs. evil dilemma. Her favorite place to relax is anywhere within close proximity to a beach or wooded lake. A huge history buff, she plans to one day make a trek across the US to get her fill of American wonder (with hubby, labs, and lap top in tow). She loves a good hot cup of coffee with Creme Brulee liquid creamer and sugar. A maestro with a bag of frosting, Wilton cake decorating lessons only fueled her artistic fire. She is pretty darn awesome at crankin' out a deluxe wedding, baby shower, or themed birthday cake that will make your toes curl.

Excerpt from Spartan Heart, Part One: A Steamy-Sweet Romance Recommmended for Ages 17+
The museum elevator doors shut. Evangeline pushed the lower level button for the basement. Her heels clicked loud against the marble tiles. Stepping into the Treasure Recovery Room, she spotted the familiar table of lanterns, and headed towards the center of the room. Evangeline's head turned in search of the statue. Her brows furrowed in confusion. All that remained of the statue was an empty marble platform base. Did someone move the statue? Steal it? Did she dream or imagine it? She was sure there was statue of a Spartan warrior down here. Now it was gone!
A gnarled voice came from behind her. "Can I help you, Miss?"
Evangeline whirled around. "Oh, you startled me!"
The man smiled in hedonistic pleasure. "Pardon me. I'm Phebus. Visitors are not allowed here. I'm afraid I'll have to escort you upstairs."
Evangeline controlled her reaction to the hideous man. In an instant, she didn't like him. His scarred, distorted face reminded her of unmatched puzzle pieces fused together with thick burned scar tissue. A shiver of fear bolted down her spine. Rubbing her hands down the length of her arms, she tried to ward off a chill. Instinct told her to run.
"I'm not a visitor, Phebus, I'm your new boss, Evangeline Montgomery."
His demeanor changed in an instant. Phebus looked furious. Offering a scarred limb, she knew he forced his smile. In the same token, she accepted his mangled hand. At the unnatural touch of his cold skin, she shivered. It made her think of Dorien. The uncanny resemblance was troubling.
"I apologize, Miss Montgomery. Welcome back."
He was lying, she saw it in his eyes. Withdrawing her hand, everything about him repulsed her. "Why, thank you, Phebus." She played along.
"May I ask what you're looking for?"
"I thought a Spartan statue was down here. I can't seem to locate it."
His scarred brow furrowed. "Funny you mention it. One has been missing for weeks," he shouted in anger.
Evangeline took a protective step back.
"My apologies. I'm afraid I'm quite protective of the museum's treasures." His greasy, black hair seemed to slither towards his mangled face. "I almost caught the thief on the night of the statue's disappearance. The intruder somehow escaped the room before I could reach him. Perhaps he stole the statue you seek."
"Did you call Scotland Yard? Why wasn't I notified of the theft?"
"You were on bereavement leave, Miss Montgomery."
"I don't care what I was doing, Phebus. Something this important should have been reported immediately."
His eyes narrowed.
"Another oversight and you'll lose your job. Do I make myself clear?"
Phebus took a menacing step towards her. His smile was evil. It made her stomach feel queasy. Taking another step back, Evangeline felt threatened. She cried out when she bumped into someone behind her. Whirling around, she let out a sigh of relief. "Mr. Cornwallis!" She was grateful for his presence.
"Ah, Evangeline. I was told you were down here, my dear."

The museum elevator doors shut. Evangeline pushed the lower level button for the basement. Her heels clicked loud against the marble tiles. Stepping into the Treasure Recovery Room, she spotted the familiar table of lanterns, and headed towards the center of the room. Evangeline's head turned in search of the statue. Her brows furrowed in confusion. All that remained of the statue was an empty marble platform base. Did someone move the statue? Steal it? Did she dream or imagine it? She was sure there was statue of a Spartan warrior down here. Now it was gone!
A gnarled voice came from behind her. "Can I help you, Miss?"
Evangeline whirled around. "Oh, you startled me!"
The man smiled in hedonistic pleasure. "Pardon me. I'm Phebus. Visitors are not allowed here. I'm afraid I'll have to escort you upstairs."
Evangeline controlled her reaction to the hideous man. In an instant, she didn't like him. His scarred, distorted face reminded her of unmatched puzzle pieces fused together with thick burned scar tissue. A shiver of fear bolted down her spine. Rubbing her hands down the length of her arms, she tried to ward off a chill. Instinct told her to run.
"I'm not a visitor, Phebus, I'm your new boss, Evangeline Montgomery."
His demeanor changed in an instant. Phebus looked furious. Offering a scarred limb, she knew he forced his smile. In the same token, she accepted his mangled hand. At the unnatural touch of his cold skin, she shivered. It made her think of Dorien. The uncanny resemblance was troubling.
"I apologize, Miss Montgomery. Welcome back."
He was lying, she saw it in his eyes. Withdrawing her hand, everything about him repulsed her. "Why, thank you, Phebus." She played along.
"May I ask what you're looking for?"
"I thought a Spartan statue was down here. I can't seem to locate it."
His scarred brow furrowed. "Funny you mention it. One has been missing for weeks," he shouted in anger.
Evangeline took a protective step back.
"My apologies. I'm afraid I'm quite protective of the museum's treasures." His greasy, black hair seemed to slither towards his mangled face. "I almost caught the thief on the night of the statue's disappearance. The intruder somehow escaped the room before I could reach him. Perhaps he stole the statue you seek."
"Did you call Scotland Yard? Why wasn't I notified of the theft?"
"You were on bereavement leave, Miss Montgomery."
"I don't care what I was doing, Phebus. Something this important should have been reported immediately."
His eyes narrowed.
"Another oversight and you'll lose your job. Do I make myself clear?"
Phebus took a menacing step towards her. His smile was evil. It made her stomach feel queasy. Taking another step back, Evangeline felt threatened. She cried out when she bumped into someone behind her. Whirling around, she let out a sigh of relief. "Mr. Cornwallis!" She was grateful for his presence.
"Ah, Evangeline. I was told you were down here, my dear."

Excerpt from Spartan Heart, Part One: A Steamy-Sweet Romance Recommmended for Ages 17+
The gravesite service was comatose. The constant flashes of cameras persisted. It made Evangeline feel like a freak at a circus. Strangers stared and gawked, pushing her over the edge. Wanting to scream like a woman possessed, all she could do was stand there in silence. The bodies of her parents were lowered into the ground.
With a toss of her hands, bouquets of red and white roses whooshed through the air. Then she heard it; the sick moist thud of flowers made contact with the tops of shadowed caskets. Breaking free of Taryn and Eliza's grasp, Evangeline reached her summit. She finally gave in to temptation.
She ran.
Hopping over benches, Evangeline skipped over decorative stones and brushed past baskets and urns full of bright artificial flowers. She didn't care that she left them standing with their jaws dropped open in stunned silence. She slowed her run to a brisk walk. Shuffled steps carried her as fast as black matte heels would allow. Any moment now, she would reach the safety of the limousine. The car would give her solace from all of these crazy people. Swollen, tear-blurred eyes made walking difficult.
Evangeline wound her way through the cemetery. Blinking several times helped clear away the cobwebs. Heels sunk deep into the damp earth. Slowing her pace, she wound around crypts half consumed by ivy. Limestone headstones all seemed to match. Every one of them was etched with angels, flags, and heartfelt poems. Taryn' voice was faint. It echoed far behind her. Refusing to look back, Evangeline didn't stop. Out from the shadows, a stranger approached her. Ignoring him, she planned to side-step the bloke. But something sparked the moment his eyes caressed her face. Familiarity forced a quick second look. Shimmers of deja-vu made her stop abrupt.

In an instant, she was angry. How could the voidless stare of a statue make her feel so pierced and violated? She felt mocked, laughed at. Like he knew her every secret. With a bolt, she charged towards him. Her arms were raised high. The crowbar posed above her head, she was ready to strike. But her steps slowed, practically on their own volition. She realized her folly and fell to her blood‑dried knees. The bar went reeling aside. Its eerie echo consumed the room with the angry sounds of metal.
Her arms embraced the statue' legs. Tears fell on his sandaled feet. She hiccupped aloud. The unknown force was back, urging her to look upon his handsome face again; making her wish his strong arms could hold her. Stepping up before him, Evangeline' arms wrapped tight around his neck. Her head rested under his chiseled chin. Her heart hurt with every beat. Was there anything that would ever heal this ache?
"I'm so lonely," she whispered.

An Arizona native, Kristine lives in Surprise and has been married 21 years to her high school sweetheart Brett. She is the mother of Taryn, Brett, and Zackary, and is a young Grammy to Parker, Ivy, and baby Evely'nn. A huge labrador lover, she is also mom to yellow lab Magnus and to the very naughty (and huge) white Labra-doodle puppy Brody.
Hobbies include writing passionate love stories that involve chivalrous characters, dashing adventure, forked humor, and the ever-true good vs. evil dilemma. Her favorite place to relax is anywhere within close proximity to a beach or wooded lake. A huge history buff, she plans to one day make a trek across the US to get her fill of American wonder (with hubby, labs, and lap top in tow). She loves a good hot cup of coffee with Creme Brulee liquid creamer and sugar. A maestro with a bag of frosting, Wilton cake decorating lessons only fueled her artistic fire. She is pretty darn awesome at crankin' out a deluxe wedding, baby shower, or themed birthday cake that will make your toes curl.
