31 Days of #BookLove: Day 29 – FALLING INTO YOU by Jasinda Wilder
Today marks Day 29 of 31 Days of #BookLove. Rather than review all 323 books I read year, I decided to share one of my favorites. I meant to wrap this up in December, but I got hit with the plague. So…the #BookLove continues into 2014.

FALLING INTO YOU by Jasinda Wilder
Genre: New Adult Contemporary Romance
Publisher: Indie
Synopsis (from Goodreads):
I wasn’t always in love with Colton Calloway; I was in love with his younger brother, Kyle, first. Kyle was my first one true love, my first in every way.
Then, one stormy August night, he died, and the person I was died with him.
Colton didn’t teach me how to live. He didn’t heal the pain. He didn’t make it okay. He taught me how to hurt, how to not be okay, and, eventually, how to let go.
What I Liked:
This is another book that feels like two stories in one. I thought the story would pick up pretty close to Kyle’s death (it’s in the synopsis. Instead, the first half of the book unfolds slowly, showing teen friends Nell and Kyle falling in love over several years. It’s tragic and heartbreaking when he dies because we’ve gotten to know Kyle and fall for him to. Nell doesn’t think that she’s ever going to be okay. That’s when Kyle’s older brother Colton enters the picture. Where Kyle was the good boy, the one who always did the right thing, Colton is the one who left his family behind to make his own path in the world. He’s the opposite of Kyle, but I loved how Nell’s character changed and grew in the story, allowing for room for her to mature into a different kind of relationship. There is a lot of angst and drama in this story, so be prepared.

OFF COURSE by Sawyer Bennett
Genre: New Adult Contemporary Romance
Publisher: Indie
Synopsis (from Goodreads):
Renner Caldwell has her life perfectly mapped out. She has the ideal relationship, the perfect job and all is right in her world. When a shameful turn of events happens, she boards the first plane bound for Ireland to lick her wounds and get her head back on straight.
Cillian O’Bradaigh is the sexy, front man to the Irish rock band, Over The Edge. His rising fame and sultry voice make him every woman’s fantasy come true. Not to mention his single-minded determination. To put it simply: what Cillian wants, Cillian always gets. And he wants Renner, because there’s just something about the flame-haired beauty he has to possess.
If their relationship was just about sex and rock n’ roll, it would be easy for them to get lost in their desires. Only their relationship is anything but a hook-up. Will lies, deceit and hidden tragedy get in the way, making the path to true love uncertain? Or will the girl whose been knocked Off Course, find her footing with the man who is teaching her it’s okay to lose control?
What I Liked:
Cillian, Cillian, Cillian. This is one hot boy. Admittedly, when I picked this up, I was getting worn out by the girl-next-door meets sexy-rocker trope I was seeing in New Adult novels. I can honestly say I bought this book because (a) he’s Irish and (b) the cover is hot. I’m happy to say the book exceeded my expectations. Renner is a strong character. She’s made mistakes, but she’s trying to find her way. Cillian is in a tough situation with one of his bandmates who begins to come between Renner and Cillian’s growing relationship. I loved how Renner was written. No drama just matter-of-fact about what she needed. There wasn’t a bunch of back and forth breakups and lack of maturity. I liked seeing Renner come into her own and believed Cillian would come to appreciate her for that. I’ll definitely reread this one.

BONUS: There are companion books about the guys in Renner’s family. See the series here.

INTO THE DEEP by Samantha Young
Genre: New Adult Contemporary Romance
Publisher: Indie
Synopsis (from Goodreads):
Live young. Live hard. Love deep.
Charley Redford was just an ordinary girl until Jake Caplin moved to her small town in Indiana and convinced her she was extraordinary. Almost from day one Jake pulled Charley into the deep and promised he was right there with her. But when a tragic incident darkened Jake’s life he waded out into the shallows and left Charley behind.
Almost four years later Charley thinks she’s moved on. That is until she takes a study year abroad in Edinburgh and bumps into none other than Jake Caplin at a party with his new girlfriend. The bad-boy-turned-good attempts to convince Charley to forgive him, and as her best friend starts spending time with Jake’s, Charley calls a truce, only to find herself tumbling back into a friendship with him.
As they grow closer, the spark between them flares and begins playing havoc with their lives and relationships. When jealousy and longing rear their destructive heads, Charley and Jake struggle to come to grips with what they mean to one another.
And even if they work it out, there is no guarantee Charley will ever trust Jake to lead her back into the deep…
What I Liked:
INTO THE DEEP felt like two books woven together. The first book is a young adult love story about Charley and Jake as teenagers. We see them from their first meeting to seeing every step of them falling in love. The second story takes place in their college years when Charley and Jake end up as exchange students at the same London school. In that story, Jake has a new girlfriend, and Charley still hurts over his betrayal and abandonment of her as a teen. The two stories are cleverly woven together so that you are seeing the couple fall in love, while in the next chapter you’re hurting for Charley as she watches Jake with his new girlfriend. Facts are revealed until you begin to see the complete picture of what happened to this sweet couple. And while you’re watching their relationship deteriorate in one timeline, you’re experiencing the pull they still have toward each other in the other (even if Jake seems a little shady at one point – hello, he has a girlfriend). My one complaint would be that the story ended abruptly, leaving me dissatisfied because I wanted MORE. The good news is that the second book OUT OF THE SHALLOWS will be out in April. I can’t wait to read it!

WALLBANGER by Alice Clayton
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Publisher: Indie (now Simon & Schuster)
Synopsis (from Goodreads):
The first night after Caroline moves into her fantastic new San Francisco apartment, she realizes she’s gaining an intimate knowledge of her new neighbor’s nocturnal adventures. Thanks to paper-thin walls and the guy’s athletic prowess, she can hear not just his bed banging against the wall but the ecstatic response of what seems (as loud night after loud night goes by) like an endless parade of women. And since Caroline is currently on a self-imposed dating hiatus, and her neighbor is clearly lethally attractive to women, she finds her fantasies keep her awake even longer than the noise. So when the wallbanging threatens to literally bounce her out of bed, Caroline, clad in sexual frustration and a pink baby-doll nightie, confronts Simon Parker, her heard-but-never-seen neighbor. The tension between them is as thick as the walls are thin, and the results just as mixed. Suddenly, Caroline is finding she may have discovered a whole new definition of neighborly…
In a delicious mix of silly and steamy, Alice Clayton dishes out a hot and hilarious tale of exasperation at first sight…
What I Liked:
WALLBANGER is a laugh-out-loud romp. The narrative is a close POV in Caroline’s head and follows her urban, twenty-something adventures in the city. It’s kind of like an updated version of Sex in the City, except funnier and a lot more entertaining. Caroline is a strong lady with great friends, a burgeoning career, and a pretty happy life. I liked that she wasn’t desperate. There was no great tragedy in her past. Instead, she’s a normal, single girl having a good time, and I liked that I could see myself and my friends in her. Plus she’s funny as hell (although the “O” thing grated after the first few mentions – a minor complaint, though). Her interactions with Simon, her sexy neighbor, are hilarious, and their path toward romance is a slow one, with lots of witty repartee. I think the strength of the book lives in the friendships. This is definitely a book I’ll revisit.

BROKEN AND SCREWED by Tijan
Genre: New Adult Contemporary Romance
Publisher: Indie
Synopsis (from Goodreads):
Alexandra’s older brother died the night he graduated. That day changed everything for her. No longer was she the party girl. No longer did she care about being popular and no longer was her family the happy unit she always thought existed. The only person who could help her heal is the same person who loved her brother as much as she did, his best friend. She only hopes to keep her entire heart from breaking when Jesse will move on, and she knows he will.
After Ethan died, Jesse excelled at basketball, partying, and girls. He used it all to turn his emotions off, but the irony was that Alex was the only person who could do that for him. She helped him forget, but she was the one person he shouldn’t be with because the secrets he knows could shatter everything. They could shatter her.
What I Liked:
Okay, I have to admit that I consider books 1 and 2 one book. The first book deals mainly with Alexandra’s family and friends. Yes, Jesse is part of that story (though I kind of wanted her to push him to the curb with the way he treated her), but he is not the main focus. I think the Alexandra of book one is sad and lost, but she hasn’t really found her rage. Her pain is raw and hurts to read, and I wanted to hit everyone around her, especially Jesse. But then you get to the end of book one, and it cuts off. If I only had read this book, I’m not sure I’d love the series. It was book two that sold me (but you need the set up of book one). Alexandra finds her rage – oh, does she ever. She’s sick to death of what people have put her through, and she’s learned to take care of herself. But she’s also kind of brittle. She’s scared that she’s going to break at any time. And that’s when Jesse comes back into her life. And the great thing is that he’s changed too. These two have reached a point where they can meet as equals and decide whether or not to take advantage of the undeniable pull they feel toward each other. I found this book to be hot, hot, hot, and finally fell for Jesse. Plus, I just liked the cast of characters in both books. Highly recommend both, but read them as a set.

What I Liked:
SIGNIFICANCE is that rare bird in new adult – it’s incredibly sweet and clean. I mean that in a non-judgey way since you’ll see I read a LOT of NA this year. But this book did stand out in that the author plays up the sexual tension – very effectively – but keeps the focus on the emotional aspects of Caleb and Maggie’s relationship. With that said, Caleb is one of my favorite book boyfriends of the year. He’s smart, charming, protective (without going alpha), and is generally a sweetheart to Maggie. And Maggie grew is a trooper, full of strength and a huge heart. As her bond to Caleb forces her eyes open to a new world, she rolls with the punches. Not only does she stand up for herself, but she becomes a survivor. This book also wins for one of my favorite boy-meets-girl scenes. How can you not love a book where the girl saves the boys life the first time they meet?

BONUS: There are sequels to this story! After finishing COINCIDENCE, I had to read THE REDEMPTION OF CALLIE AND KAYDEN (which I liked even better than the first book, though you need to read them in order). And you better believe that I am desperately awaiting the next book, THE RESOLUTION OF CALLIE AND KAYDEN. There’s also a spin-off about their friends, but I haven’t read it yet. See the series here.

Synopsis (from Goodreads):
Callie has grown up keeping her feelings locked away from the outside world, and as her painful past threatens to consume her life, most days it’s a struggle just to breathe.

31 Days of #BookLove: Day 30 – REASON TO BREATHE by Rebecca Donovan
Today marks Day 30 of 31 Days of #BookLove. Rather than review all 323 books I read year, I decided to share one of my favorites. I meant to wrap this up in December, but I got hit with the plague. So…the #BookLove continues into 2014.

REASON TO BREATHE by Rebecca Donovan
Genre: New Adult Contemporary Romance
Publisher: Indie
Synopsis (from Goodreads):
“No one tried to get involved with me, and I kept to myself. This was the place where everything was supposed to be safe and easy. How could Evan Mathews unravel my constant universe in just one day?”
In the affluent town of Weslyn, Connecticut, where most people worry about what to be seen in and who to be seen with, Emma Thomas would rather not be seen at all. She’s more concerned with feigning perfection—pulling down her sleeves to conceal the bruises, not wanting anyone to know how far from perfect her life truly is. Without expecting it, she finds love. It challenges her to recognize her own worth―at the risk of revealing the terrible secret she’s desperate to hide.
One girl’s story of life-changing love, unspeakable cruelty, and her precarious grasp of hope: Reason to Breathe is the first installment of the acclaimed Breathing Series.
Like the sound of REASON TO BREATHE? Give the author a little #BookLove. Rebecca Donovan tweets @BeccaDonovan.
BONUS: There are sequels to this story! BARELY BREATHING and OUT OF BREATH get progressively more heartbreaking. In fact, BARELY BREATHING leaves you more than a little depressed. But hang in there. There’s a lot of good in OUT OF BREATH that makes it all worth it, and I loved seeing how much the characters changed after everything they’ve experienced. See the series here.
