Sharing: Thoughts On Reading, Empathy, & Writing
I'm obsessed with learning. Research for me is a form of entertainment. I take it very seriously. Therefore, it is no surprise; a couple of statistics literally dictated the way I wrote my novel. Is that a bad idea? Well, the verdict is still out. However, I am compelled to explore, and what better way than to share it with my many wonderful writer friends. Besides research, I have spent my life dealing with people from all walks of life, and educational backgrounds. People are truly awesome, and I find their behaviors intriguing. Most of all, I enjoy learning about how they interpret their own behavior. It is fascinating to me. Often our tight lipped society leads individuals into the belief that they are different or odd.
Americans have simply evolved into a less outspoken society than our counterparts have around the world. Why? I really don't know, but being frank is a sure way to get a prescription for Prozac.
Writers are fascinating people with something to say. Many writers are outspoken people whom learned early on, society affords them more latitude with pen in hand. I think most would agree there is no end to the effort a writer will endure to say what they want to say in the right way. Of course, often, there is a lot controversy over the 'right way'.
Now, many of you may get a chuckle out of this, because after personally experiencing the market, it's a bit funny to me. Nevertheless, as I wrote my novel I focused on two statistics. Don't get me wrong, these statistics are very bothersome to me.
The first is empathy. Studies claim young men and women entering college are 40% less empathetic than in recent years. WOW! I can hear many of you out there saying video games and graphic television are to blame. Perhaps, you are correct, but I don't think video games will disappear from the shelves, nor will television go back to the 'Leave it To Beaver', or even the 'Cheers' eras. Nothing is sacred nothing is off-limits.
Since it is my nature to be thorough, I also wonder if we should consider terrorism, and protective parenting as a possible cause. Likely, it is a combination of all. The truth is…I'm not going to solve this on my own.
Yet, I ponder this statistic and wonder. Are these young adults desensitized or do they simply, not know how to feel for another? It seems problematic, but in reality, is it a good and practical defense mechanism or a serious decline in society? After all, the world is often heartbreaking; we can't have people standing around in tears all the time.
Now, let us look at the second issue. Many years ago, I remember a particular day when I was reading the newspaper with my Dad. He said, "You know Sis, the paper is written at an 8th grade reading level to accommodate the grade at which most Americans read." My mouth dropped, horrified, I asked, "Dad, do most Americans really read at an 8th grade level?" Obviously, his answer was "yes." Apparently, back in those days, we had reached our peak. Americans, now, read at a 5th grade level. Unfortunately, many of them are college educated. In my mind, this is preposterous.
I have a son with disabilities. Some years ago, I was told he would never read, but if he did, he would only master the reading level of a second grader. That was unacceptable, therefore, I hired a competent tutor, and I am proud to say that at 21 years old he reads proficiently at the level of a high school freshman, yeah, better than the average American.
One thing I learned over the years watching him progress with his tutor was after mastering the obvious basic skills, he became a better reader, by reading. When he became a better reader, he understood human emotions and possessed more empathy towards others. Soon, his IQ rose by two deviation standards. Professionals consider this a considerable rise. Later, he increased by one more deviation standard.
Dear Friends, bear with me, this is all slightly embarrassing. When I began writing my novel, I sat out to address these two issues. I would create two characters that would tackle very complex issues. In order to impact a general audience one of my characters would be an uncommonly verbal and inquisitive male. The format would be character driven with lots of dialogue, similar to a sitcom. All of this would address the lack of empathy, which I found myself more concerned about than is reasonable. Needless to say, within the current audience it meets with a love/hate relationship, they either love to style and format or hate it. Please, understand I am not an egomaniac, I am happy with small progress.
This format would also allow me to bring down the reading level, thus appealing to a general audience. Yes, I know you are laughing now. Of course, I didn't realize, the book would not be reaching that audience. At present, I am quite humbled.
Still, I ask you to allow me to defend myself. Prior, to publishing nearly 300 readers read all or significant amounts of King Solomon's Journey, many read all the way through book 2. I knew virtually none of the readers. (Let's face it, getting family to read your novel is about like pulling teeth.) The cross-section was a general mix of male/female, educational levels varied, and ages were from 22 to 68. I don't believe any of the readers were writers. The results were very positive; men did tend to like it about 6% better than women. There were other interesting details, but I won't present those, now.
Since hindsight is 20/20, I realize, I took a very long and complicated route to reach an answer many of you knew all along… Books do not reach the average reader; the average reader doesn't buy books, and those who possess the ability to read above average probably do not lack empathy, so maybe they don't need to have things spelled out.
I guess, my hope is that the emerging authors that are out there taking more control over their work through marketing and self-publishing, will find a successful way to provoke unlikely readers into the world of books. I am personally quite hopeful, as this dynamic group of authors is dedicated and motivated.
Please, feel free to comment and share your thoughts.

About: King Solomon's Journey
Daring couple entertains in fast-paced archaeological adventure series, "King Solomon's Journey" by Sammy Sutton presents one duo's quest to unlock the signs to save the human race. In "King Solomon's Journey," Sammy Sutton tackles those issues your mother warned you never to discuss: politics, religion, and sex. The novel is the first in the series featuring a verbal and inquisitive anthropologist Antonio Dominguez, a Miami born Cuban-American and a skeptical spiritualist Amanda Messenger, from the Midwest.
Together, they tackle a host of adventures, including the discovery of ancient scrolls. When Antonio and Amanda find the 3,000-year-old scrolls sent by King Solomon, they unleash a series of clues, the key to saving humanity from a possible catastrophe. With this newfound possession, however, the unusual couple faces an enemy faction called OPERA, a group who will stop at nothing to gain possession of the ancient scrolls.
Readers will enjoy following the often quirky and socially challenged 40-something duo—each just as lively as any 20-year-old—as they weave through this high-speed labyrinth of wisdom and intrigue. In order to reach the end of the maze and conquer the evil group, the couple must first tackle their once hidden, personal demons—before the adventure catches up with them.
"It's like Indiana Jones in a romance racing against time," Sutton said of this adventure, which promises to hook readers on the ongoing "Dominguez Adventures" series. This balance of romance, humor, and action will engage readers who appreciate a flair for archeological history and a fascinating marriage of science and mysticism.

Sammy's Review of 'Formed of Clay' by Thea Atkinson
A very clever author indeed created, Formed of Clay. Thea Atkinson immediately plunges the reader into a fabulous tale written in the style of an ancient mythological tale with Gods and Goddesses in a stunning mystical view of creation. This introduction provides the mood for a masterful dark ancient tale.
Set in ancient Egypt, the story follows a tender boy on a surprising journey. Sentu, the foster son of a scribe is amazed to find himself studying as priest. His mentor, Hozat is at the top of the Pharaoh's priestly hierarchy.
The growing young boy soon discovers things aren't always what they seem. Sentu experiences a labyrinth filled with deception, and betrayal at the hands of those he once believed were holy. The boy must participate, and suffer within an evil hidden in the background of ancient Egypt.
The author creates a fascinating dark tale that weaves together mythology, and Egyptian history into a spellbinding story as modern as it is ancient. The ending will surprise even the most astute.

Solomon's Legacy
"With constellations in the night sky, some look up and point. Others can be guided by the arrangement:The Sagittarian bow piercing enemies, the Water JarSoaking fruit trees, the Bull plowing its truth,

Prior to posting Solomon's Legacy, I presented the idea to my friend Ben Miller. Many of you will know Ben as a wonderful poet, and writer. Ben suggested I post it, but to provide my blog readers with some personal perspective. I value Ben's opinion, so I will attempt to do so… Hopefully, I won't appear too clumsy. The novel King Solomon's Journey is a fictional story of a journey. Within it lies a complex tale, one designed to explore the marriage of science, spirituality, and history with the human experience. I like most writers use actual facts and fill in the blanks with a fictional story. My hope is to add a human element and provoke thought to some of the mysteries that surround us. The circumstances I present are just one of many possibilities stirring around in my own mind. Obviously, there are many more ideas in the minds of others. Here, I present just one, a fictional situation with several facts, and a whole lot of fantastic speculation based on ancient text. In all honesty, I share this piece away from the complete works as only a part of the saga, but with the hope of not appearing to exclude anyone. A concept supported within the complete texts of the trilogy. In the second book Hidden Mountain, the Prophecy and the Scrolls come alive.

The time has come. This is the Legend:
In the year 939 BCE, prior to spring the crew and passengers aboard the vessels slid through the Strait of Gibraltar, between the Pillars of Hercules. They left their homeland behind, with knowledge they would never return. The large Galley ship led four smaller vessels in the bittersweet departure as their assignment began, stockpiled with supplies, rations, and women.
The fleet navigated the Atlantic Ocean for several months as they embarked upon a special expedition to the New Land. The command ship carried 400 passengers and crew, and demanded 290 rowers. Accompanied by four smaller vessels, each filled with extra supplies, they provided the means to travel through the shallow tributaries of the New Land.
Destiny dictated the King's power must fade throughout the United Kingdom of Israel. It was time. A Divine Vision prompted him to organize and deploy this mission. The Tribes would spread throughout the World and populate, but only if Israel diversified. Many claimed the King had gone mad. Contrarily, Israel's strength prepared the countrymen for this day.
Fate intended the people of Israel to inhabit all corners of the Earth. King Solomon and his father, King David, trained the Tribes for their future. Rumors claimed King Solomon abandoned the God of Moses, but in reality, Solomon instead painfully chose to honor his God, and all His wishes. The King sent the special envoy to temporarily inhabit a specific location, on the other side of the planet.
The journey wasn't without misfortune. Dysentery infected everyone aboard one of the smaller ships, and left all its passengers in a floating tomb, without a single survivor from the depths of her boughs. Near the island of present-day Cuba, a wild hurricane capsized one of the remaining smaller ships. The crew only rescued a few survivors from the treacherous waters.
Three of the five original ships arrived at the mouth of the Rio Grande, deep inside the Gulf of Mexico, nearly 2,500 years before Christopher Columbus discovered the New World. King Solomon's Captain, Nathanael, knew their travels up the river would be difficult. The direction of the on-coming current forced the ships to push against the river's fierce waves.
Merely a few days into their ascension of the Rio Grande, Nathanael determined the crew and passengers should stop for rest. They constructed a temporary campsite to provide a much-needed respite on dry land. The crew and passengers grew exhausted from the sea. No one had stepped foot off the ship in months, and many members of their party had been lost to the ocean's demands. Thwarted by a vicious hurricane, their earlier plans for a land rest didn't happen.
Before they left their temporary camp, Nathanael ordered the Levite Priestly Scribe, Ahab, to leave an inscription to mark their path. Other similar ships had voyaged before them into the New World to gather resources during the creation of the Temple, and Solomon's Palace. This was the first group sent with intentions to settle, and procreate.
King Solomon's orders sent Nathanael and his voyagers to a specific summit above the tributary that brought them from the Rio Grande. King Solomon a dedicated student of The Book of Enoch provided the longitude and latitude of their destination, the King detailed their duties and provided the items needed for their ultimate purpose.
The Voyage reached the summit at the site of an ancient volcano. Nathanael quickly set Ahab, the Scribe, to work creating known confirmed ancient relics located in recent times. On the highest point, at the very top of the Mountain, they positioned a stone that dedicated the Nexus to Yahweh.
At the base of the Mountain, Ahab inscribed the Ten Commandments on an enormous stone. This stone instilled Yahweh's laws as supreme at this site. Acting as a gateway to God's natural Temple, two more giant stones created a portal beyond the Commandments. This served as the entrance.
Ahab the Scribe aligned the Cosmos with Divine precision, as he inscribed the Summit's stones with the image of the approaching Eclipse. This Eclipse Stone marked the day when all would abandon God's Natural Temple in the New Land, and set forth to populate the New World in preparation for the day their descendants around the world would welcome 'The Chosen'.
All throughout the lands, their descendants would prepare for the future wedding. King Solomon gave the voyagers explicit directions for their journeys, and their territories within the New World.
Nathanael's five Levite Priests, along with two members from the Tribe of Judah, soon embarked on their next expedition. The priests, Allon, Boaz, Eran, Iscali, and Merab descended into the volcano to find God.
King Solomon informed the old volcano housed a natural formation, God's Temple in the New World. Solomon professed God spoke in this Holy Sanctuary in the New World. He warned - Only the Levite priests, and those with an extraordinary Divine Connection, could enter the place where God spoke.
The Wise King told them they would find a Great Room within the old volcano, a room formed naturally by God, and the place where they would hear the Voice of God. In this chamber they would discover an abundance of God's Manna.
The Levite Priests could enter the Great Hall; the other members of the group could not, but could stay within the Halls of the Labyrinth. During their stay at the Mountain, the Priests performed their duties to God within the Great Hall where God spoke to them.
Before the Tribes dispersed from the site to claim their territories amongst the New World, they obliged to complete their duties under the instruction of the King. These duties would benefit the future descendants of all the Tribes. The King sent items for them to leave behind, strategically placed for only the Chosen One and his companion to find. The Chosen One would emerge from the Tribe of Judah.
During this time, the Earth would evolve and wait. Amidst the wake of the Great Immaculate Conception, when God would connect with his feminine Shekinah, his bride - the New World, would be born and prepare. The Chosen One must gather special representative members of the Tribes to prepare God's Nexus, and Humanity, for the Great Marriage in the Cosmos.
God would only take his bride if Humanity and Earth came prepared to enter a New Era. The New Existence by design would unravel separation. This will birth the beginning of a new era. During this time, the female will share equal dominance with the male. This will happen as part of God and Shekinah's conception. In the days leading to the Great Conception, the female power will experience a gradual rise in preparation of the Great Marriage.
The Chosen One from the Tribe of Judah will find a Scroll. If his soul is touched, he will set upon a great journey to discover his Levite companion. Led by the Divine Spirit, the Levite will then enter the Chamber of God, to retrieve the second Scroll.
Together, Judah and Levi will face Demons within themselves, the same Demons that hinder Mankind. They must overcome these obstacles within their individual souls, and conquer them together. Facing these personal Demons, they will learn much and see these as representatives of the plagues that suffer Mankind.
The pair's connection will ultimately lead them to the identification, and collection, of the Chosen Tribe members that will come to represent all the Sons of Abraham. These members will prepare the Nexus as they usher out the Old, and welcome in the New.
Judah and Levi will fight to prevent the Sons of Baal from blocking this marriage. Many years preceding Judah and Levi's journey, Baal will plan and prepare to block the eminent conception. The Sons of Baal will possess the necessary power to place tragic obstacles in their way, and they will do so without remorse.
The Sons of Baal will not enter the place of God, as they cannot. Beyond the Gates of the Home of the Chosen One, the Sons of Baal will weaken, as they lack the connection needed to succeed against God's Supreme Design. These are Sacred Grounds.
In the time of King Solomon, all the Tribes possessed the knowledge of the Prophecy. They were aware that God would keep His promise, but Judah and Levi would always retain their Freewill. The end result would be far from inevitable.
The two must learn to reach deep within their souls, as individuals, and if they had not prepared themselves as such individuals, their meeting would never take place. The Pair must believe in the Greater Divine Design, or their possible meeting would fail to manifest. Beyond their initial encounter, these beliefs will experience further tests, in the form of rising personal Demons that haunt them.
The couple must join, and form a complete connection before their journey begins. Unexpected obstacles will continue to test their connection in order to assure their Faith as Truth. The energy between Judah and Levi must course through them as a river, flowing in and out, from, and onto one another, and then back again.
This will not be easy as they struggle with Freewill, and powerful threats from their Adversary - the Sons of Baal. Judah and Levi will need to obtain the help of trusted others, but ultimately, they will always need the connection of one another to defeat their opposition.
Levi will possess a strong connection to the unseen world. Judah will find his strength grounded strongest on the face of Mother Earth. Their connection will require each to receive the other. Without Levi, Judah will not locate his brothers and their female counterparts.
Judah and Levi will emerge as Spiritual representation, undivided by incomplete ideals, which have long since divided the brothers. The New Land a Mother must retain her maternal instinct. Jerusalem, the Father, must also remain strong. The Nexus will join the Father and the Mother within Earth's center. The Wise King Solomon predicted, in the days prior to the unification, the frozen mass separating the two would activate the process of melting.
Mankind must understand, only those prepared will survive the Great Cosmic Wedding, and live to enjoy the 1000 year reception that will follow. Without overcoming their inner demons during the days of darkness fear will overcome the majority, and lead them to their own demise.
Levi the Archer, and Judah the Bull must prepare the path for the Lion. The Lion, the son of the Great Mother Shekinah and the Great Father God, is the Son born to fight the final battle against the Sons of Baal, the Evil Ones that turned their backs on God.
They must believe and pray that Judah and Levi will find the answers, discover their purpose, and reach to one another. Together they must seek the knowledge of the Ancient Ones.
We must stay alert. The time has come to defeat Judah and Levi.

Add melted chocolate, vanilla extract, almond extract, coffee, and salt. Beat this mixture until well-blended. 5. Fold whipped cream, and almonds into the egg mixture. Spread into the prepared cake pan. Place the pan in a large roasting pan with enough hot water to reach halfway up the side of the cake pan. Bake for about 30 to 35 minutes or until set, but still soft in the center. 6. To unmold, loosen edge of cake with a sharp knife, running it along the outer edge. Then place serving platter upside down over pan, and invert. Garnish with fruit, cocoa, or edible flowers. Serve warm. Makes about 12 servings. Just in case your interested, this same cake makes an appearance in my novel

Sammy's Review of The #1 Thriller; 'In Memory of Greed' by Al Boudreau
In Memory of Greed by Al Boudreau
Prior to reading Al Boudreau's In Memory of Greed, I expected three things. A thriller, and at least some part of it took place in Africa, and big business played a dynamic role in the plot. All were true, but much to my surprise, the premise touched on an issue that impacts my life everyday.
I am one of the growing numbers of Americans who in recent years have developed intolerance to the gluten in wheat. Unlike its cousin Celiac's Disease, which blames a specific European gene, this form of gluten intolerance seems to point another genetic origin indicated using the same tests used for transplant patients in determining the chances of organ rejection.
Medical researchers highly suspect that this gluten may very well be the reason for the sudden epidemic of childhood obesity and diabetes. A couple of years ago, I was honored to have a chance to learn a great deal from a Doctor on the east coast who is currently in the process of further proving this phenomenon. His research, along with others into human haplo types are proving more valuable each day in determining answers to a great many mysteries, both medical and historic.
The current rise in American gluten intolerance correlates with the recent widespread use of genetically engineered grains grown today. In the not too distant past we grew many strains of wheat, today we are down to six or seven types. The sales pitch is easy. The farmers purchase these seeds understanding that they are more resilient than their natural counterparts. In fact, these seeds are superior in the fields as they are more resistant to drought, and other pestilent.
With this in mind, Mr. Boudreau's novel takes on personal significance. Most of us are not immune to the many tales of megalomaniacs that fill our history books. However, in our modern society we deny they can and do exist. We live our day to day lives under a false pretense of beliefs that suggest our society is far too advanced, and complex for such an individual to succeed.
Al Boudreau removes this comfortable smoke screen. In his fascinating thriller, Al weaves a web that might just have you believing, a power hungry maniac could achieve his wildest dreams and make it a reality, easier now than ever before. Oh, by the way, oil is too obvious. Our food supply is a much better choice.
The author spares nothing in this intelligent web of greed. It is a fascinating story that only proves our vulnerability. The journey is awesome. The characters are believable, and well developed. In Memory of Greed will keep your eyes glued to the text, and your body on the edge of your seat.
My hats off to the informed author for offering phenomenally well written and designed plot about a very critical and timely subject.

Sammy's Review of "The Watchers From Within Moments, Revealed", by Mark Paul Jacobs
The Watchers From Within Moments, Revealed by Mark Paul Jacobs is a fascinating, and suspenseful short story!
Mark Paul Jacobs provides readers with a wild, intelligent ride in a short amount of text. He has developed an absolutely plausible set of stunning circumstances. No doubt any reader will be left contemplating the possible reality of such an event.
In this nail biter, FastTech, an American Company, makes an alarming discovery with some state-of-the-art camera equipment. Their discovery sends the entire population into a frenzy that demands government, and political involvement. The shocking end literally took my breath away.
I enjoyed this story immensely.
Disclosure: I purchased, and read The Watchers From Within Moments, Revealed without any prior arrangement with the author.
Watchers From Within Moments, Revealed is available for .99 cents on Amazon

“One often feels exalted, expanded, in his presence. He is not one of those egotists who miniaturize others. He is the opposite kind of egotist, driven by grandiosity rather than greed, and if he insists on a version of you that is funnier, stranger, more eccentric and profound than you suspect yourself to be--capable of doing more good and more harm in the world than you've ever imagined--it is all but impossible not to believe, at least in his presence and for a while after you've left him that he alone sees through to your essence, weighs your true qualities (not all of which are necessarily flattering--a certain clumsy, childish rudeness is part of his style), and appreciates you more fully than anyone else ever has.” — Michael Cunningham
