Ways to Break Procrastination

Came across this helpful article in the Atlantic on dealing with procrastination. I saw myself in the term ‘pathologocal procrastinator.’

Just Pick Something to Work on

My job, like all artists, is to hang in there and keep working. ~ Julia Cameron

Life interrupt-ous happened. One project was finished and everyday life came with that big sucking vacuum of demands and emergencies, and off I flew in a million directions. Days went by and I did not work on any dedicated writing project. The more days I did not work on a project, the more I didn’t write at all, even in my journal. Left un-nurtured, the writer in me withered, and frustration grew.

The phrase dedi...

Gleanings: of hissy-fits, saying no, and Love in a Small Town

Life has intruded, terribly. I had a big hissy-fit, watched a number of episodes of Bones, and came to the realization that I absolutely had to write. Writing would solve everything. Why can I not remember this? Because the world is so loud, and everyone’s needs are so loud.

I told a few people and responsibilities, “No,” and came to the page for stolen moments.

A main difficulty of the modern writer, the modern human being, is being called on to wear so many hats, many of them ill-fitting, a...

Last fall a long-time writer said something to me that opened my world. It was, “I never thought I wanted to be bothered with the publishing business side. I hated it. But then I started doing it, and I am loving it!

Not only have I disliked the business side of publishing. I dug...

Gleanings: Let the Force of Habit be with the Writer

Exercise the writing muscle every day, even if it is only a letter, notes, a title list, a character sketch, a journal entry. Writers are like dancers, like athletes. Without that exercise, the muscles seize up. ~ Jane Yolen

Today’s schedule has gone awry. Totally. Annoyingly. I’m thrown into confusion. With so much to do today, so many obligations jumping up and down and shouting, I find myself at my computer, writing. Yes, that I’m fleeing confusion brings me here to the keyboard–but then I...

Gleanings: It’s About Time, and nurturing the writer.

An artist date is a block of time, perhaps two hours weekly, especially set aside and committed to nurturing your creative consciousness, your inner artist. ~ Julia Cameron, The Artist’s Way

I decided to take the dog to the beach. The excursion was a brand new experience for me and for the dog, who has only been away from the house one time since she took up residence here, and that was to the groomer, with me beside her. Frankly, I don’t get out much anymore, either. Not for fun. Most of my...

Gleanings: 3 Ws–When and Willingness and Writing

“We’ll set a limit when we’re ready, and not a moment before.” ~ Melody Beattie, Language of Letting Go

This morning I reached a space of commitment, direction, confident willingness and understanding of myself as a writer at this point in time. I did not arrive here automatically or by wishing. While not being in control of the timing of getting here, I have been working toward this space. I’ve been writing toward it daily and diligently, most of the time seeming to grope in the dark of lack...
