Sweet Saturday Samples - Oct 1
Over lunch the three main characters from I.O.U. SEX--June, Kiki, and Peggy--discuss their progress in tracking down their former high school steadies. Both Kiki and June are hot on the trail of their old beaus, but Peggy swears she isn't interested in finding Mark, her first love. This might have something to do with the fact that she thinks she is the size of a heifer. However, that doesn't stop Peg from ignoring her doctor's advice to eat healthy foods. Her order of chicken fried steak with all the fixin's has just arrived, and she's diggin' in.
Embarrassed by the whole conversation, Peg turned her attention to cutting up her steak. She used the largest piece to sop up a glob of mashed potatoes, along with some gravy, before stuffing the bite into her mouth. She closed her eyes, savoring the heavenly combination of tastes and textures. For a few moments, the women ate in silence. Peggy glanced down at her chest and dabbed at a drop of gravy with her napkin, then reached into her purse to retrieve the Tide pen she kept there. She frowned, wishing food didn't always land on her boobs like they were a baby's bib. She used the pen to erase the stain and blotted the spot with her napkin again.
As they finish their meal, Peggy makes a decision.
If June and Kiki can look for their old boyfriends, maybe I can search for Mark too. I really am curious about him and have always wondered how his life turned out. She stirred her drink with her straw and stared into space. Besides, I don't have to act on whatever I find and actually meet him in person. Other than Kiki and June, no one will even have to know. This will just be a way of finding an answer to a question--a question I've had for a long, long time. Where did Mark go and why did he leave without a word?
Peggy's challenge is not only to find her old boyfriend but also to get her weight and related health issues under control. Like approximately 70% of the U.S. population, she's overweight and, at this point, she's losing the battle. But that could change.

Does anybody remember necking at the drive-in?

I.O.U. SEX is the story of three women who make a pact to search for their former high school boyfriends—years after graduation.
For the past few weeks, we've been focusing on Kiki and her assignation with Greg, ending with her vow to "knock him off his pedestal."
Starting this Sunday, we'll be posting excerpts from June's story. In this scene, memories from 1965 and her first love, Denny, surface. They're in the back seat of his car at the Jefferson Drive-In in Dallas, and the windows are fogging over.
"You better slow down or you'll get more than you bargained for." He turned and grasped her shoulders, staring into her blue eyes. "Or have you changed your mind?"
June scooted away, her warm feelings cooled by Denny's question. She pushed her long blonde hair off her face and anchored it behind her ears. "You know how I feel about going all the way—why can't we just have some fun?"
We think you'll agree that Denny's idea of "fun" might not be the same as June's. An eighteen-year-old male's hormones seem to change his perspective on everything, don't you think?

Sweet Saturday Sample

Old eating habits are hard to break, aren't they? In this scene from I.O.U. SEX, best friends June, Kiki, and Peggy get together for the first time since their inebriated idea to search for their old high school boyfriends.
The next day, Peggy sat across from her two friends, studying the restaurant's menu and having a hard time deciding which entrée to order. Finally, she told the waitress to bring her favorite meal—chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes with cream gravy, and a large Coke. A look passed between June and Kiki, but they said nothing, other than to ask for grilled tilapia with steamed veggies and iced tea. Peggy sighed, wishing she had their willpower, wondering if she could change her order, but the waitress had already taken their menus and left.
Kiki took a sip of water and smiled at the others before speaking. "So, how goes the great search? What's the latest?" "Search? Wa…wait a minute," Peggy stammered. "Are you talking about your wild idea to find our old boyfriends? I thought that was just a joke. June, you're not searching for Denny, are you?" June's cheeks reddened. "Well, yes. In fact, I found him." Peggy stared at her friend, open mouthed, thinking June must be as crazy as an outhouse rat to get involved in Kiki's scheme. "But...but...you aren't going to--"

Six Sentence Sunday - Sept 11

We've skipped the last couple of Sundays, but we're back today with more from I.O.U. SEX. This entry wraps up the rendezvous between Kiki and her former steady who is now "Reverend" Greg. Kiki discovers even a man of God isn't always as holy as he appears to be.
Kiki cranked the car's ignition and pealed out of the parking lot. She shifted into high gear and tore down the street, her anger hotter than the sun-baked pavement.
Greg has no idea who he's messing with. He's right--this isn't finished. Not by a long shot. I'm gonna knock that sanctimonious sack of shit off his pedestal if it's the last thing I ever do.

Sweet Saturday Samples

Haven't all of us had weight or health issues at one time or another? One of the main characters in our book, I.O.U. Sex, faces the reality that the worst thing about being overweight isn't her appearance—it's the threat to her health. In this scene, Peggy realizes just how severe her problem really is when she opens an envelope from her doctor's office and sees the results of her latest physical.
Peggy took a deep breath, hoping her cholesterol level was lower than last time, and that her HDLs, LDLs, whatever the heck all those Ls were, had improved. Filled with dread, she opened the envelope and spread the sheet of paper across her knees. Crap. There it was in black and white—total cholesterol, 359. Geez, that's almost as much as the number of days in a year. Her other numbers were even worse. The doctor had written a note at the bottom of the page, asking her to call his office. He also wrote "diet, exercise, medication" alongside his comment and underlined the words for emphasis. Double crap. No way did she want to go on some ridiculous diet that would leave her starving and depressed, like some anorexic supermodel, or take some scary medication with a long list of side effects. She crammed the report back into the envelope….
Peggy always says, "Even a blind hog can find an acorn once in a while." But will she be able to find the strength to reverse her weight and health issues, especially before she connects with her old boyfriend?

"Mmmm, Junie. You drive me wild." Denny reached across the vinyl-covered seat and pulled June closer. She snuggled against him and stretched up to whisper in his ear. "Wild, huh?" She inhaled his unique scent—Brut aftershave mixed with the faint aroma of Lava soap and motor oil from his dad's garage. Denny's laugh sounded nervous. When he shivered, June giggled and stroked his wavy hair, then tickled his earlobe with her tongue, making him gasp. "Whoa, baby. You better slow down or you'll get more than you bargained for." He turned and grasped her shoulders, staring into her blue eyes. "Or have you changed your mind?"

Denny groaned. "Junie, baby, you really don't understand, do you? Have you ever heard of blue balls?" June stammered. "B-blue what?"
Denny ran his fingers through his hair, making the short strands stand on end. He sighed. "Never mind. Come back here, June Bug. Let's figure out what we can do without actually doing it." He pulled her closer and slid the spaghetti straps off her shoulders, gently kissing the spots where the fabric had been only moments before. They'd done some heavy petting in the past, so June didn't object. She loved it when Denny caressed her breasts and his kisses warmed her inside and out. Once she'd let him touch her down there. It felt go good—until she got scared and made him stop. She could only imagine the thrill of real sex. Of course, good girls didn't go all the way. She'd had long discussions with Kiki and Peggy on the subject of how far to go without getting a bad reputation. Peggy said once you did something, boys seemed to expect it every time. And Kiki sure had a lot of information for someone who claimed virginity.
June smiled and unbuttoned Denny's shirt.

Six Sentence Sunday - Aug 14

Six more sentences from I.O.U. SEX. When three women track down their high school boyfriends, they get more than one surprise. In Kiki's rendezvous with Greg (he's now a televangelist), she has to defend herself against his rough treatment and smacks him in the nose with her elbow. Blood splatters his chest. Then ...
He pointed at her with an outstretched arm. "Seductress. Daughter of Satan. Come here and minister to my needs." Kiki stopped only long enough to grab a Bible from a nearby table and heave it at him. When the sharp corner of the book hit Greg square on the bridge of his nose, he screamed and collapsed back onto the carpet.

We really appreciate all the kind comments we've received on our novel, so this week we're again posting six more sentences from I.O.U. SEX. It's the story of three women who track down their high school boyfriends to give them the sex they never allowed as teenagers. In this scene, Kiki has rendezvoused with her old boyfriend Greg (who's now a televangelist), but things are going from bad to worse. He has ordered her to submit to him and he's playing way too rough.
Though a little wrestling could sometimes be fun, Kiki realized Greg had gone way beyond a playful tussle. He wasn't teasing."Obey, woman." Greg spoke in a voice pitched to reach the back rows of his congregation. He reached for her lace thong. "Like hell I will," Kiki growled, really afraid now and angry enough to rip the hair from his head.

Island Beneath the Sea - Isabel Allende
Do you like to learn a little history about other parts of the world while being entertained by a compelling story? Then you might enjoy Island Beneath the Sea by Isabel Allende. The story takes place in Haiti in the late 1700s, and is written in the point of view (primarily) of a slave girl.
I've written a review of the book on the Boomers & Books blog. So rather than rewrite it, here's the link: Island Beneath the Sea
I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did! And if you get hooked on Allende's writing (as I have), you'll also want to read Daughter of Fortune. That's my favorite, so far.
