Day Zero- Christmas

Welcome to Christmas! It is 4:30 and I just looked out the window at my thermometer. It is still registering 70, it is also raining.

Last night the bakery across the street burned down and my neighborhood still smells of burnt bread. On the upside the whole town was out on the road last night cheering on the fire departments.

Today has been food presents and then the family tradition of watching the Finnish movie Rare Exports!

Tomorrow we kick off the 12 days and nights with Alison Ash I hope you all had a good day and look forward to the stories we have lined up for you!

The 12 nights (and days) of Christmas

There was a time when Christmas started on Saint Nicholas Day, December 6th or 19th, and ended On Epiphany, Jan 6th. The time between Christmas and Epiphany are the twelve days of Christmas.

I can hear you through the screen “but the song takes place before Christmas”. Well, most likely it doesn't.

Over the years we’ve stopped celebrating those days after Christmas. Yes, the UK and the Commonwealth celebrates Boxing day, and there is New Years Eve. I live near Philadelphia and here on New Year we have mummers.

The rest of the days have fallen by the wayside.

The twelfth night used to have many celebrations its own, now we don’t even think of it.

In this blog series we will be celebrating the twelve days and nights of Christmas, from five golden rings to the yule log, you may even see the Lord of Misrule!

Wassail!

Tess Andrews lacked self-confidence. She believed she was ‘Plain-Jane’. Her last date ended before it began when he asked if she’d set him up with one of her model clients. Tess owned a small employment agency. Some of her clients were models, which only made her insecurities worse.

Internationally-famous model photographer, Parker Walsh, always left Tess speechless and in a rush to run and hide. She attempted to spark up a conversation but with no success. Her business dealings were even dealt with through his assistant.

Her savior—Girls Night; once a week Tess got together with her friends who were all in similar situations with no luck in love. One night they wished on a magical pendant to be that perfect girl they would like to see in the mirror. They wake up in their ‘Cinderella Bodies’ – sexy and better looking but they only have until midnight to make the most of it.

Her ‘Cinderella Body’ boosts her confidence to invite Parker to lunch. He surprises her with an invite to his charity fashion show. Tess has everything for her magical night – her Prince, the dress, the shoes but she worries when the clock strikes twelve if he’ll like the ‘real’ her.

“Oh yes Miss Tess, this definitely cries out red carpet. Or should I say runway for you.”

Tess laughed. He thinks I’m one of the models. Now there’s a compliment or one damn-good sales person.

“I’m not a model. I run an employment agency. Parker is one of my clients. I refer models to him.” Tess laughed and Franc joined in.

“I assumed. How silly of me? Parker sends models to me for special occasions. He’s never sent a special someone. Is this your first date? Or is it just business” Franc teased with a wink.

“Our second date actually if you count lunch today.” Tess shrugged.

“Well he is one lucky man.” Franc turned Tess so she could she herself in the mirror.

She smiled. She never dreamed she’d be wearing a dress this beautiful. Franc was right. She felt like she’d been wrapped in silk as the light-weight material touched her skin. The bodice gave just enough of a peak of her cleavage. I take back what I said to Cami about Cinderella. I don’t know if I’ll get the happily-ever-after but I am certain I’m going to have one magical night.

Review: Society for the Preservation of CJ Henderson

Let me start by saying two things: it has been a long time since I reviewed a book and this is a hard one to re-start with.

Everyone I know in the Creative world of the Tristate area was effected by CJ, by his life and by his death. Even if that sounds pretentious it is the truth.

The Society For The Preservation Of CJ Henderson brings together many of the best of the Tristate and Mid-Atlantic authors - not all, our area includes NYC, Philadelphia, Baltimore and DC including all would be crazy.

The stories in this anthology includes stories of high fantasy, sci-fi, urban fantasy and, of course, stories set in the world of HP Lovecraft’s Mythos.

I enjoyed every story, but at the same time even the happiest of the stories left me a little sad. Above all I got the feeling he would have loved the work.

If you knew CJ, even tangentially, you will see him in this anthology. If you didn't know CJ, you will by the end of the book.

I would love to see this anthology have a sequel – and isn't that the highest praise you can give?

Blurb:

On July 4th, 2014 the world lost CJ Henderson, an iconic author and all-around great guy. He lost his battle with cancer, but he did not go quietly and he will not be forgotten. His work is immortalized in over 70 novels and works of non-fiction, and at least as many collections, anthologies, and magazines.

In fact, new works by CJ Henderson will publish for years to come thanks to his heroic efforts to finish and find homes for those projects as-yet unpublished at the time of his illness, two of which are printed here.

CJ always did what he could to give other authors a boost. Encouraging them, mentoring them, sending opportunities their way. With that in mind those of us who called him friend feel there is no better tribute we can raise in his memory than an anthology filled with people he has helped over the years, writing stories inspired by CJ or his work.
We hope you enjoy these tales of fantasy, science fiction and horror, and that they might inspire you as well. Featuring stories by: John L. French, Jean Rabe, Patrick Thomas, David Boop, Danielle Ackley-McPhail, Jeff Young, Leona Wisoker Robert M. Price, Leona Wisoker, James Chambers, and, as always, CJ Henderson.

Writing time for those with no time

I read writing blogs. I can’t imagine a writer who doesn’t read writing blogs from time to time. I get linked to a lot of blogs about time management. It makes sense, I don’t have much in the way of time and I am always interested in how other people handle lack of time.

But here is the thing: the blogs always start off ‘I have a supportive partner who works, so I can stay at home and make up these worlds.

That’s awesome and all, but how does that help the rest of us with time management?

I have a supportive partner that works outside of the house. I work outside of the house, as does my retired mother. Between the three of us we have six paying jobs. My mother and I also write and have farm work. My longest week in 2015 was 28 days straight through, with those work days being between 8 and 16 hours long.

I’m not saying that to make you feel bad for me, I’m just trying to point out that for me it isn’t about balancing time promotion and writing. I have finite time to do both. Super finite time.

These are the things I do to keep finite time from turning into no time.

1)Keep yourself healthy: Those of you who know me know I had a lie altering injury in 1985. I’ve been in and out of Physical therapy since then. A half an hour a day of stretching, strengthening, ti chi and meditation keep me upright and walking. They also give you a half an hour of plotting.

2) Use the time you have: if it is five minutes use that five minutes. I keep a notebook with me to write down ideas. I tried a mini recorder, but I found myself not listening to what I recorded. I’ve never liked my recorded voice.

3) meditate: yeah, I mentioned it in point one, but let me explain. When most people I know hear me say ‘meditate’ then think I mean ‘sit still and empty your head’ when I mean exactly the opposite. Most of my meditation is done moving and all of my meditation is done thinking. I may start off by thinking “how many zombie novels end up in sporting arenas” (by the way I have no idea the answer to that question) or even “Where does my character go from here” then let your mind go.

4) schedule time: if you schedule 15 min spend that time at your computer (or paper or whatever) if you write five words in that time that is a win.

5) don’t forget to recreate: Really. We all need people in our lives. We all need to do fun things. Once a month I spend an evening out with friends. We eat Chinese, go to a comic shop and watch a movie.

6) don’t beat yourself up: we are all human and life likes to laugh at us. If you can’t get to your computer (or you sit there and you don’t get your five words down) let it go. You can’t control the past, you can only control the future.

This last thing has nothing to do with time management, but always try to have fun!

How the mountain and moorland saved the native pony

I’ve talked a bit about ponies as I’ve gone along. So by now you know that they are under 52 inches tall, or at least they are normally under that size. I’ve also talked about how some breeds are never ponies no matter how small they are.
I’ve posted about the Icelandic horse and how it influenced so many pony breeds particularly in Britain. I don’t know if I talked about my Grandfather spending time in Iceland during WW2

He took this photo that we found recently. It’s kind of cool, right?

Ponies evolved on the margins of the habitable areas for horses, where the environment wasn’t good enough to produce enough food for many full sized horses. There isn’t any genetic difference between ponies and horses although at one time people thought that they were descended from different species.
Ponies are phenotype defined. So basically if it looks like a pony it probably is. That isn’t to say that each breed isn’t genetically defined, but ponies look like ponies the same way draft horses look like draft horses. Ponies are shorter, with thick but short legs thicker mains and tails. They often have smaller ears and a thicker heavier coat.
Ok here is a story that I have been hearing all of my life. I had to look up the dates and the wording but here it goes.

In 1535 King Henry IIIV of England enacted the Breeds of Horses Act. This act called for the culling of all stallions under 15 hands and mares under 13 hands. The act was repealed in 1566 by Elizabeth I because poor lands couldn’t support larger horses. The good thing for the British Native Ponies was that many breeds lived on the edges of things. They lived in the moors and mountains, therefor they didn't get caught up in the culls.  Many of the British breeds still have populations in the moors or mountains. Feral and semi-feral stock can be used in conservation grazing programs.

For the next few weeks I will be talking about ponies of the mountains, moors and the islands.

Yorklyn Arabians

Happy Holidays.

I was going to post about the mythological background of the Arab horse. But we got sad news here in Delaware this week.

If you saw my last post you saw the picture of the young woman sitting with her mare, and I mentioned that Delaware has a very strong Arabian community. On the 21st we lost 11 Egyptian Arabians, one mare is being cared for at New Bolton. The Farm is Yorklyn Arabians and they had a fire.

a Go Fund has been set up to help the family here. If you can donate it would be awesome, if you can boost the signal that would be awesome as well.

JOSEY’S CHRISTMAS COOKIE BLOG TOUR

FIVE
STAR REVIEW

5.0 out of 5 stars A Lovable Story!

By Debby Lee

I loved this
heartwarming Christmas story.

Josey was a workaholic who spent all her spare time at the office in order to
cope with the tragic loss of her parents and being jilted by her fiance. I
really felt for her.

Clint was a handsome veterinarian Josey met at an animal rescue event who
helped her buy a large slobbering dog named Cookie. Clint handled the animals
with professionalism, sincerity, and great care.

The two Morning Dove's in the story, Harry and Beatrice, were desperate to see
Josey and Clint get together in time for Christmas.

If you enjoy sweet plots, whimsical animal themes, and stories that make you go
"aaawww" this one's for you.

Highly entertaining, highly recommended!

BLURB:

In the blink of an eye, Josey lost the most important
people in her life, her parents.

Can a hound dog named Cookie, a pair of mourning doves,
and a passionate vet bring the holiday spirit back to Josey's life in time for
Christmas?

EXCERPT:

As I
stared at the pathetic dog in his diaper, I realized no one wanted the dog,
they were just gawking at him. The sign said his name was Cookie, part Basset
Hound and part Redbone Coonhound. I didn’t know anything about either breed. I
did know he was very large and he was slobbering everywhere and he should have
a diaper around his neck. I turned to continue my search and a felt a tug on my
pant leg. I looked down and Cookie had a hold of my jeans. When our eyes met,
Cookie's eyes twinkled, just like Clint's.

A
glob of drool hit the top of my shoe. He let go of my pant leg and licked the
goo off my shoe. I wanted to say, "gross," but instead I said,
"thank you." I was hooked. His fur was a reddish brown and soft as
silk. Not caring about drool or dog hair, I sat down on the floor next to
Cookie, wrapped my arms around his neck, and finally felt at peace.

Another
glob of drool hit the floor next to my butt. He looked sad, like that was a
deal breaker and I'd leave him behind. I looked Cookie in his sad eyes and
laughed. He pulled back his goofy lips and smiled back.

That's
when I heard Clint's voice, "Well Josey, it looks like you found your soul
mate."

He
laughed, but not at my expense.

Sharon is a multi-published author of
paranormal and contemporary romance. She loves romance. She loves reading
romance, living romance, and especially loves writing about romance. She gets
no greater feeling than watching her characters come alive in each other's
arms. Most of all, she loves giving her characters the happily ever after they
deserve—with a few bumps and bruises along the way.

One of her favorite things to do is
picking up a new book and sinking into the story, immersing herself in the
emotions between the characters. She hopes to inspire her readers the same way
her favorite authors have inspired her.

When not writing, she can usually be found
either curled up in her recliner with her cat and a good book, or in the
kitchen baking sourdough bread or bagels.
