What the Heck?????

Hey all!  I need questions.  I've bene doing the Ask Andrew thing on t his blog for a while now and I haven't had any questions in the last few weeks.  So if there's something you'd like to know about me, writing, sex, or anything else, send me a note.  andrewgreybooks@comcast.net

I'll be happy to answer them.

Ask Andrew is your chance to ask questions of a gay romance author.  The questions can be about the writing process in general, writing sex scenes, gay men, sex, characters in romance, characters having sex... okay you probably get the picture.    I promise to answer your questions as frankly and with as much humor as I possibly can.

So if you have a question, please send it to andrewgreybooks@comcast.net.  This is different from my usual email so your questions don't get lost.  I will answer one question a week.

Please remember this is meant to be all in fun.  (I was going to say good, clean fun, but who wants that.)    So send me your questions and let's see what mischief we can get into.

Visit Andrew on Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/andrewgreybooks  and you can join Andrew's fan group All The Way With Andrew Grey.

Thank you to Jacki by Renae Kaye

There was a time in my life when I wondered what it was like to be a writer.
I no longer need to wonder, because I’m finally settled into calling myself a writer and proudly doing so.  (It only took 3 years.)
If someone was to ask me what’s it like to be a writer, the first thing I would think is FUN.  It’s so much fun to take this idea in your head and bring it to life.  You take an image, a name, a concept… and you breath on it, you plot it, to work it, you mould it…  and you end up with a story that you can read over and over.
The second think I would think is HARD WORK.  The days when the words aren’t working for you, the story plot needs tweaking and the rewrites.  The days of editing, proofing and more editing.  The bad reviews, the promotions and the feeling like you’re talking to an empty space.  These can all be soul crushing if you let them.  You need to see the bigger picture as well as the smaller picture.  But don’t ever think writing is not hard work.

Writing is also HUMBLING.  Readers are wonderful and when they rave about your latest book, you feel ecstatic, but often unworthy of such adoration.  When a reader contacts you with how your writing influenced them or how much it meant to them, you really can’t express how thankful you are for that praise.  And when you start thinking about all the people in the world who have read your work…  Humbling.  Simply humbling.
But writing has opened up a whole world for me.  I have friends I’ve met over social media who I chat with and it’s amazing how much we can find in common.  It’s wonderful to chat to another person who has read the entire series of a certain author, and we can sit and say, “Wouldn’t it be great if the author wrote about this couple…?”
I regularly chat with other people on the other side of the world – yet they know nothing more about me other than my books and my social media presence.  This is because we’ve connected in a different way – usually our mutual love of MM Romance.
And then I get the readers who leave me… speechless.  Like Ms Jacki Perrette.  I have no idea how I can thank her enough, and I don’t think I can put my gratefulness into enough words.  This week I toddled off to check my PO Box and found an odd box.  A box I wasn’t expecting.  I brought it home and opened it and was moved to tears at the thoughtfulness of Jacki.
She’d sent me pressies.
As well as some rainbow unicorn poop, a rainbow sheep, some NoH8 bling and a Pulse Nightclub remembrance shirt, Jacki had given me something that was wonderful!  We’d often discussed our favourite authors, and I mentioned I was a huge fan of Susan Elizabeth Phillips, and that she had influenced my own writing.  So Jacki bought me a paperback of Susan’s latest book… and then got it signed.  For me.  OMG!

Of course, Jacki being Jacki, she asked the most famous Susan Elizabeth Phillips to write “Ha ha, Renae!” because Jacki had the pleasure of meeting one of our favourite authors and I was without on the other side of the world.
So I’m dedicating this blog to Jacki.  Thank you, Jacki.  Thank you for being a friend to chat with.  Thank you for reading, beta-ing, and critiquing my work.  Thank you for my presents.  Thank you for teasing me.  Just thank you.
Jacki has her own hopes and dreams, and I’ve been privileged enough to be privy to them.  Jacki also wants to someday be a published author, and I know it will come true.  Because when you want something that bad, you work at it until you succeed.  So remember the name “Jacki Perrette” folks, because one day she’ll have her own story.

In other news, Safe in His Heart is now out on audio.  Yay!  You can find it on Audible here.

What Would You Do? by Felice Stevens

If you follow me, you know that I am an unabashed fan of certain reality TV. Some of my favorite shows are the Real Housewives franchise. This season's Real Housewives of New York City has been one of the better shows because of the conflict between "Countess" Luann and the other women, specifically, Bethenny, Sonja and Ramona. You see, Luann is now engaged to marry a man who not only dated Ramona right before he met Luann, BUT also had a friends with benefits relationship with Sonja for ten years.

SOUNDS LIKE A BOOK PLOT, DOESN'T IT???

If I wrote that, I'm sure people would decry these facts and say that it couldn't happen. But in real life, things occur that people don't believe are true because they seem so far fetched.

To make matters worse, Luann's fiance was caught kissing another woman a week after they were engaged and when Bethenny found out through pictures someone sent her, she was afraid to tell Luann.

What would you do? Would you tell a friend that you have evidence of her soon to be husband or wife kissing another person, or knowing it would upset them would you wait and see what happens. Or would you never tell?

Oh, and I also love Real Housewives of Orange County and they have equally crazy issues.....stay tuned.

The Mind of a Writer by Riley Hart

Hello. Happy Thursday. I've been trying to figure out something to blog about today but nothing would come to me. I kept thinking and thinking and felt like I was hitting my head against the wall. LOL. So, I opened my document and decided to do a little writing sprint to see if that helped.

I'm working on the first book in a new series that I'm calling WeHo Boys for now. It's about a group of four friends and takes place in West Hollywood. I've had trouble figuring out some aspects of one of my characters. He just hadn't fully painted a clear picture of himself to me. I've asked friends to help me brainstorm and little pieces would come together here and there but I wasn't getting the full picture. Still, I've been trying to write through it.

So...back today. I'm doing a writing sprint to stop stressing about what to blog about and as I'm writing something just happened. This one little piece of dialogue that totally made me GET this character. I understand him now. I know where he's coming from. Sure, I'll have to tweak some things in the beginning of the book, but that's okay. He's finally told me who he is!!! He just needed me to stop pushing him and to just let it happen on it's own...and in doing that, I figured Jesse out...and I also found my blog topic! LOL.

It's funny how those things work sometimes. I think the more we stress ourselves out, the harder answers are to find. So, my motto is to try and let it go, and wait until the answer comes to me :)

Easier said than done, most of the time...

I'm With Her by Cardeno C.

I know authors aren't supposed to talk about politics and I agree with that "rule" and try to follow it for the most part. But today I'm making an exception by telling you that I'm voting for Hillary in November, I donate to her, and I am THRILLED that she is the presidential nominee.

I remember the first time I heard of Hillary. It was 1991/1992, and a friend of mine was a student at Georgetown and volunteer on Bill's campaign. He was assigned to staff Hillary and he had wonderful things to say about her (he later worked with Tim Kaine and had amazing things to say about him too).

That same year, another friend's mom used to talk about Hillary a lot. She was a single, working, professional woman and she spoke to us youngsters (because I was young in '92, you guys!) about Hillary. About her background, her work, her commitment, about how hard it was to be a professional woman when Hillary (and this mom) were younger and even way back in 1992. She spoke of her admiration for Hillary, of her strength, and she made me see wonderful qualities I maybe would have missed under all the attacks Hillary faced even back then (do you remember the cookie recipe scandal?).

When I was in college, another friend had a summer internship in DC and she too staffed Hillary. She returned to school telling us only good things about the First Lady who took the time to give this girl advice on her future career.

Later in my professional life, I worked with a woman whose family was from Arkansas. Her father knew Hillary professionally and she had grown up around Hillary. She had great stories and anecdotes to share, all of them good. So did her mother, the few times I had the pleasure of her company over dinner.

I'm not a fan of politics or politicians as a rule. I'm really not. They're often slick and scripted. They often seem to have a goal that relates to themselves instead of the public. But I don't see that in Hillary. I never have because of the wisdom imparted on me by a strong woman and mom back in 1992 to look beneath the battle hardened exterior to the devotion inside.

When I look at Hillary, I see a dedicated public servant who isn't particularly showy or charismatic but who has done amazingly hard work, day after day, year after year, with only the good of the public in mind. Perfect work? No. But that's called being human.

I'm not that kid I was in '92 anymore so I know more than a few things about not being perfect, about doing my best and later realizing maybe it wasn't the right thing. I too have made mistakes in life. But after closely following and admiring Hillary Clinton for almost 25 years now, I have no doubt that the decisions and choices she makes are not about herself but are about what she believes to be best for the country.

And just like I trusted that friend's mom and other moms and other women I've since worked with, I trust Hillary. I really, deeply trust her. She is the most qualified, dedicated, intelligent, resilient candidate I can imagine and I am so happy all these years later that I can do any small part to help her help us.

#I'mwithher

What I Learned

About 2 weeks ago I went to Tallahassee to visit with my publisher and I learned a number of things on that visit and I thought I'd share some of them with you.

1)  A hurricane sounds like someone parked a jet plane outside your window and left the engines running.

2)  A tire bouncing down the freeway will tear up a car fast.

3)  You can find humor and make the best of any situation, even running over a rogue tire.  (Just for the record Elizabeth is an amazing driver and we were all safe thanks to her.)

4)  Outlet malls are amazing especially when the Coach store is having an awesome sale.  I got a messenger bag!

5)  Fishing on the gulf was an awesome experience.  (I caught a grouper, lots of red snapper, and 3 sharks.  Most of which we had to throw back.)

6)  Boat captains and deck hands really know what they're doing when the boat engine dies miles from shore, twice.

7)  Watching the sun both rise and set over the water on the same day is a surreal experience and one I'll always remember.

8)  I really like my new pink shorts.

In short I had an amazing time with tons of new experiences.

Writing Recap (Feb. - Sept. 2016) by Cardeno C.

Happy Monday! It has been far too long since I did a writing recap, but alas, I haven't written as much as I'd like so I haven't missed much.
I released a contemporary novel called Not a Game.I finished writing a short novella called Rough Edges that I'll be releasing as part of a charity anthology to benefit OneNTen (release date is October 4th).My audio book project has been in full swing and nearly all my books are now in audio

I'm currently working on the next (and last) Mates book and adding to my ever expanding to-be-written list.

Have a terrific week.

Renae's Roundup

To say I’ve been sick is a little bit of an understatement.  I made it through all of June and July (our winter here) without a cold or sniffle, so I thought I was doing great.  August brought me a cold, followed by a couple of days of feeling well.  Then I picked up a second cold, then was well for a week.  Then I went down with a proper flu.  I’m talkin’ about a good one.  Fever, chills, body aches… yeah.  My whole family got it and it was bad.
I was sleeping twelve hours a night, and doing nothing but watching TV all day.  The other day I calculated that I’ve been well for 13 out of the last 45 days.
So I thought I would give you a recap of my author highlights for the last month, just to catch you up.
#1 – Don’t Twunk With My Heart released

This was definitely the biggest event.  It’s been a long time coming.  I started writing this story in 2014 and picked away at it for over a year.  Then there is the editing and proofing… well, it’s been a long time.
I’ve had a lot of messages from people and reviews that have touched me.  Thank you to the people who’ve picked up this book and loved it.  As an author it was great to revisit old friends – Liam and Jay are a fabulous couple – and it was also interesting to write these characters through the eyes of another.
When writing Loving Jay, you see Jay through the rose-coloured glasses of Liam.  You also see Liam as he perceives himself.  When seeing these characters in Don’t Twunk With My Heart, you get to see Liam as an outsider would see him – reserved, a little quiet and somewhat fascinated with Jay.  You also see Jay as Kee sees him – a little more flamboyant and louder than Liam perceives him, and without those rose-coloured glasses.  But Kee also sees Jay through the long lens of friendship, and so simply shrugs and says, “But that’s Jamie.”
If you haven’t yet picked up this book – here’s a couple of links to send you to where you can get it.

#2 – Al Sicuro Tra Le Sue Braccia released
For those of you who don’t speak Italian (**raises guilty hand**) this is the Italian translation of Safe in His Arms.  Coincidentally released on the same day as Don’t Twunk With My Heart, the Italians received their third taste of Renae Kaye (Loving Jay was released in Italian May last year, and The Blinding Light in April this year.)

People have been very complimentary about these translations, so I’m glad they have translated well.  If you have an Italian speaking friend who doesn’t speak English well, and wants to try out M/M Romance – let them at it!Link to Triskell Edizioni

#3 – Liebesblind released
My first German translation also was released at the beginning of the month.  Liebesblind is the translation of The Blinding Light.  I am hopeful that more will follow now this one has been successful.

#4 – Jay: Aimer released

And not to forget about the French, my second translation into French released just yesterday.  I adore this cover of the French version of Loving Jay.  It has Jay’s car, Daisy, and her little yellow sunflower on the aerial.  And it also features the badge that gave Jay his name – “Just do it – smile”.  Liam only saw the “J” on the badge, so in his head called the beautiful man who wore the badge “Jay”.

#5 – Yes, Professor progresses
I had a little story I wanted to write – the story of a guy who falls for his professor-looking neighbour.  I managed to finish it, and I’ve had an editor look it over.  I’ve also had a cover artist make me a great cover.  I’m getting there with this publishing business.  Slowly.  It’s creeping along.  But it’s also exciting.  I really hope you guys enjoy this one when it finally makes it out.
#6 – My latest WIP finished
Yep!  Just today in fact.
I’m going to disappoint a ton of readers – but this WIP isn’t M/M Romance.  It’s M/F Romance.  Sorry.  I had this great story, and it just didn’t work with two male protagonists. So it’s M/F and it was very different to write, I must admit.  A lot of fun, but sometimes hard for me to write in a way that didn’t have my female lead coming off as a weakling.  She has her strengths, but she also has to battle sexism at times, which rarely comes up in my M/M novels.
Even though this work isn’t M/M, I feel it is valuable to me.  Writing is about improving each time you craft a new story, and yes, I feel I am improving techniques and abilities.  Writing is also about finishing works.  Most writers I know have a slew of started-but-not-finished manuscripts hidden away in notebooks or in files on their computer.  Pulling out that started-but-not-finished story and taking it to the end shows the tenacity you need as an author.
#7 – Safe in His Heart is about to be released on audio

I received notification that Safe #2 in audio has been finished and should hit the stands any day now. This has been by far my longest book, so I’m a little scared to see how many hours it turned out to be.  Be watching for notification of links once it’s out if you’re interested.

And that’s basically my round up of the last 6 very busy weeks.  Ciao!  Merci!  And thank you for every purchase and review *heart*

CHASE THE SUN is live! by Riley Hart

Hello! I feel like I was just saying this but I have another book out! And it's another collaboration! I love writing books with friends. This one I wrote as Nyrae Dawn with Christina Lee. It's the second book in our Free Fall Series but can be read as a standalone.

Jamie Tolland has only ever known his small Oregon town. Same job, same friends, same gay bar. He feels obligated to stay, especially as his mother’s illness progresses. But when a situation presents itself in the form of a vintage sports car, he jumps on the chance to not only repair it, but also drive it to its new owner in LA.

Conner Murphy left Oregon years ago to make his life in West Hollywood. Like his unconventional parents, he’s always been a free spirit, never settling on one job or girl for too long. When he inherits his late uncle’s classic Chevelle, he’s more than happy to let his childhood friend Jamie help.

Jamie and Conner are as different as night and day. Even after years of living apart, they still have a blast together—but now it’s mixed with an undeniable spark of attraction. Before they know it, they can’t keep their hands off each other. For Conner it’s all new and exciting, but Jamie isn’t the type of guy who takes this sort of intimacy lightly.

Conner soon realizes that Jamie quenches something deep inside of him that no one has before, but he doesn’t know how to handle a real relationship. As Jamie’s time in LA comes to an end, and the more they struggle to get on the same page about their feelings, the more Jamie realizes that trying to tie Conner down is as futile as capturing the sun.

Purchase from Amazon.

Available from other retailers soon.
