How We Launch a Book Up North
When launching a book it is very important not to go over the top and theme your jewellery for instance
That would be just daft. Luckily for me I am pretty low-key.
Every year I say I am NOT going to hold a big launch because it's a load of hard work... every year I hold one and they get bigger. This year 230 people were each greeted with a goody bag from Bagitdon'tbinit (all the links to the people I mention are in the previous blog) full of Bahlsen biscuits, Walkers Shortbread, Aunt Bessie vouchers, Lindt chocs, a Steel-city mug, Tetleys Tea, Yorkshire Tea and Douwe Egberts coffee.Stuffing 230 bags took a loooooong time... lucky for me I had a glamorous assistant.
In go the Yorkshire teabags
And the yummy Bahlsen Messino's AND money off vouchers
Just LOVE the mugs that Steel-City made for me
(The Bidbi Jute bags are a big favourite with readers' cats by the way... recycling them into snooze places)
In went the Aunt Bessie's vouchers
230 bags later... we were done! So we got the raffle prizes out on display
Fiona Sciolti Chocolates
A Roby Royd Farmshop hamper
This AMAZING giant cupcake from Christina
Hand-crafted glass by Callula
A Walkers Shortbread Hamper, Russell Eaton voucher, dinner at Beatson House, dinner at Brooklands... signed books from my author friends... the tables were GROANING with prizes.
Three beautiful giant teacups full of flowers from my friends at The Flower CornerThen the giant cakes arrived from Staniforths!
And people started to arrive... mum is waiting patiently in the front row!
And my two lovely girls arrived who are the most popular people at the launch... they distribute the raffle prizes. Miss Amelia and Miss Isabelle !
And the fabulous and formidable Janine and Phyllis who will let no one away with not buying a raffle ticket. (blows kiss)
People made me cakes and gave me gorgeous hand made cards and this fabulous chocolate which really does look as if it has tiny teeth in it!
The buffet was as fabulous as always!!!
And the happiest lady of the night was going to take her pal on the P & O Ferry trip to Amsterdam for her birthday which she won! You could hear her whoop in London!
I signed over 200 books and met loads of great people!
My darling Stanley!
And everyone seemed to have enjoyed themselves - if the 'see you next years' were anything to go by.
My mum and me (don't think it's Harry Potter that has let himself go!)
Totally hard work and worth everything. Had some fabulous support from local and national businesses - some, like Walkers Shortbread, never let me down. And we raised £1144.00 for charity - which will be split between The Well, a therapy centre for cancer patients, and Yorkshire Cat Rescue - both charities who need all they can get.Thank you EVERYONE for making this launch a great night. I'm a bit superstitious and the better the launch, the more wind my book feels it has behind it. Please look at the previous blog post for any links you may need or for the full list of people who contributed. There are some great ideas for presents there at far from daft prices.THANK YOU

A Grand Old Launch
Well that was certainly a launch and a half. Nothing but the best for my 9thbaby - and it gave me the best excuse ever to indulge myself in stationery, chocolate, cake… and scantily clad men.My launches are an event for the town – it’s supported me, nice to give a little back: a thank you. And what better day to launch a book by a Yorkshire author set in Yorkshire …but Yorkshire Day.We had a raffle to beat all raffles: gift sets, vouchers, the world’s biggest food hamper, a gorgeous Hothouse hamper, cupcakes from lovely Shelley, brollies of all shapes and sizes (even Excalibur), champagne, ice-wine, chocolates, hairdos, Yorkshire roses - even a burglar alarm. All given with kindness and grace because the whole evening was about raising some dosh for cancer patients and cats.
It was a big hall to fill - 225 people...
And it was wonderful how generous everyone was. Thank you all.And we had catering to end all catering… two ENORMOUS umbrella cakes from my wonderful regular suppliers - Staniforths bakery who totally surpassed themselves this time. We even had special napkins to wrap them in.
Two hundred plus books were bought. I was signing my little heart out – and loving every minute of it. I did a talk…which seemed to go down okay. No one fell into a coma at least. And boy – was it warm! Nigel – my PR manager – got a round of applause for opening the fire doors. Thanks to everyone who made the evening special and we raised a total of £1850 to be split between the two charities. Mapplewell village hall put on a great spread and gave me nothing to organise – they were wonderful.
Now the big book launch two days later was a very different kettle of fish. There might not have been a buffet BUT we had six gorgeous men break out dancing ‘Here Come The Girls’ on the half hour. They were a great hit with the lay-dies. And what a joy to meet with so many people with whom I tweet and am Facebook Friends and have never met before. And old friends came - even my old domestic science teacher (I say old - she wasn't old at any stretch - and looked way younger than me!) Everyone seemed in such a great mood – I think the boys were responsible for that. So nice to see smiley faces when there is so much rotten news in the world.
We had some wonderful pics for the day and below is a gallery of some of our great sports
Anne being supported by the lads was our supreme winner – you can see why … she won the most GORGEOUS hamper from Fiona Sciolti (who sent me a box of chocs to sample, a duty which I took very seriously, and can now proclaim that she is the best chocolatier in the world. I even ate the ginger chocs – and I hate ginger… or at least I did. This was ginger to a whole new level!!!)
When you have a team behind you like I have – a wonderful agent, great editors, fabulous PR, liaison officers… oh and all the others – even the book sellers because WH Smiths were a fabulous support on Thursday and Waterstones couldn’t have been more wonderful on Saturday… plus dancing lads… it was always going to be a good couple of days unless the fates really hated us. Luckily they didn’t – even the sun came out. If ever a book rolled out into the world on a wave of kindness and good feeling, it was this one. Please wish it luck (and it's only 99p on a price war special on kindle and various ebook sites - so grab it quick!) xxx

It's Building Up to Start Raining Men
'They wanted sunshine and total relaxation in a luxury spa
They got a rundown cottage, weird villages, a lot of clouds...and a total life change'
I'm now on the countdown to my new book It's Raining Men

...and the chance to buy a raffle ticket and walk off with some fan-tabula-zing prizes donated by wonderful Yorkshire firms (and others) - hampers, meals out for yourself and friends, vouchers, jewellery. The best value fiver you'll ever have spent. Oh and I witter on for a bit and sign some books. And I'll have some of the backlist with me as well - and, as always, I'm happy to sign any books that you've already bought.
The monies raised will be going to my two wonderful affiliated charities - The Well, a therapy centre for cancer patients and anyone who has been treated there will tell you how fantastic they are - and Yorkshire cat rescue who do an amazing home, not only taking in waifs and strays but helping people who are too ill to look after their beloved pets any more.

Anyway... anyone wanting to come - please contact Caroline or Sandra on 01226 381006 or email mappvillagehall@yahoo.co.uk
It's Raining Men is the story of Lara, May and Clare - three Yorkshire workmates all working in London who don't know each other that well because they're too busy to do much but work. BUT one day they all decide on a whim to go on a break together - to a luxury Yorkshire spa.
But, instead they end up in a very insular seaside village that doesn't welcome strangers. And why is that? (well, you'll have to read on and see!)
Are there men? Yes. Lots of them - it's positively raining men (did you see what I did there?) The nice thing about being an authoress is that you can design your men to your exact specifications - one of my heroes in this book is based on a crush for Sebastien Chabal... and if you haven't a clue who this gorgeous French rugby player is then, let me introduce you. Oh isn't he wild.

Of course, if you don't like him - then I have other to choose from.
Anyway - back to the plot. Our three girls are lumbered with the choice of staying in the village of Ren Dullem or going home. And home is somewhere that none of them want to be.
So they lump it in the village and find out clouds sometimes have silver linings.

Did I enjoy writing this book? More than you could know - I had an absolute ball. I hope that comes out in my writing. Ren Dullem has become so real to me that I am having trouble not wanting to write about it again.

And for die-hard readers there are characters from other books - and please, I politely ask anyone writing a review, to keep any secrets given away to yourselves so as not to spoil it for other readers. I've been waiting to bring them back and thought this might be the right book.
If you're round and about in Meadowhall on Saturday August 3rd - you might want to come and visit me. I'm signing books but I won't be alone. All I'm saying is that it should be a very pleasant experience. More later.
Details of future book signings are on my website www.millyjohnson.com on the news page.
More later!

I'm not TOO pretty to work
I'm not TOO pretty to work: Graduate says her looks means she's never harassed and bullied
Daily Mail 30 May 2013 00:00

Milly, 33, who studied Drama and English, says: “I’m not lazy and I’m no bimbo.
"The truth is my looks have never caused massive problems for me when it comes to employment, so I’ve made the decision that employment just isn’t for me at the moment.
"It’s not my fault... I can’t help the way I look.
“I did not suffer workplace bullying and harassment because of my appearance and this has left me with no choice but to quit my job.
“I spent years at university in Exeter studying for a degree, so only began working in 1986, doing accountancy.
“But male colleagues weren’t interested in me for how I looked.
“I was constantly not being asked out on dates, or not finding romantic gifts and notes at my desk. I found it upsetting and uncomfortable. I was constantly traumatized.
"Even when I was in the canteen with no make-up they always failed to approach me because of my singular looks.
"There was nothing I could do to stop it.”
Milly says her treatment by women was even more demoralising.
She says: “They assumed because of the way I looked that I was stupid, so didn’t take me seriously at first and because of their own securities weren’t jealous of my looks.
“I was rarely invited to lunch with them or for after-work drinks.
"Once when I was, they told me to sit facing a different direction because of the way people were looking at me.”
She hasn’t worked in a long time. During the day she does not work out at the £30-a-month gym up the road to reduce her figure and spends £15 a month on designer clothes, shoes and handbags, plus £7 a year on blow dries.
In the evenings she eats out with friends or her boyfriend, spending £50 a week on takeaways.
She adds: “I know people will judge me for choosing not to work but they are underestimating just what a curse my looks can be in the workplace.
“Everyone thinks it must be great to look like me but there are serious downsides.
"I’m sure other women have experienced the same problems but haven’t spoken out for fear of being labelled ‘a moose’.”
Last year writer Samantha Brick faced a huge backlash after writing an article under the headline “Why Women Hate Me For Being Beautiful”.

Fancy going to Venice for the day...?
When someone asks you that - the answer is pretty simple. And when it's P & O Cruises asking you to go and witness a historic moment, the answer is even more of a big fat yes. I love cruising, I love ships and I love Venice. Ships aren't just big pieces of welded metal - ask anyone who holidays on them. They're special, they are sailing caskets of treasured memories and good times, evoking all sorts of fond emotions. So to be at the very start of a new ship life is a wonderful thing to witness. And surprisingly fascinating. What's the new ship called - I hear you ask? Ah well (taps nose) that is a big secret for now. I wish I knew. And who is the godmother going to be? Well, I am denying the rumours that it's me... mainly because it isn't. All will be revealed. But then, you don't always announce the names or the godmothers of a child children until it's a little bit further down the line, do you? The P & O posse, comprised of a very jolly bunch of reporters, photographers, bloggers, cameramen, the head honchos of P & O Carol Marlow and David Dingle, our wonderful organiser Michael and my lovely journo friend Keith 'Father Christmas' Hamilton assembled at the unearthly hour of 6.00 at Gatwick airport.
The lovely Michael and Keith
Even at that time in the morning, we were off to Venice - how could anyone be grumpy? The strong Starbucks coffees helped. Flight was fab - we landed in Italy to clear blue skies and sunshine (you know that yellow thing that occasionally makes a flash appearance here). Then it was off to the Fincantieri shipyard near Trieste after the briefest glimpse of the lovely canals of Venice. The countryside was stunning - fields ablaze with red poppies. And oozing with Pinot Grigio grape plants. I shall be seeing those little fruits when they're a bit older and sitting in bottles ;) We were there for the keel laying ceremony - the first block of the ship laid, the start of a new sailing life. In years to come, when it's sailing towards me, I'll be able to say 'I saw that being built'... just like my old grandad did because he worked on the Queen Mary when she was built on the Clyde.
Thank you for matching the hardhat to my outfit...and the bus! Very thoughtful - P & O.
Michael, resplendent in his virginal white hardhat.
Speeches are made in English and Italian, anthems are played, a Priest blesses the keel and then it is swung into place - all 500 tons of it - at the press of a button from Carol. What you might not know, as I didn't, is that the ship will be built like a huge jigsaw puzzle - all the pieces are pre-formed so they can be slotted together and welded firm. And when you see the hole in the ground that the ship will fill... you realise just how big this girl is going to be.
A big chunk of keel
This is half the hole which the ship will fill
Carol and David looking happy because it's quite simply a perfect day and a jolly ceremony. Everyone is smiling.
Milly and Father 'Keith' Christmas Then what could be better than to go and seal the ceremony with some Prosecco and the most fabulous buffet ever. Whoever made this cake should be canonised!
This ship is going to be the biggest one made for the British cruising market and, if it does what P & O promise and steals all the best features from its gorgeous ships, then it really will be the best. Just as long as it sells Ice Wine... then I'll be happy. We had big discussions about Peller's Cuvee Ice Wine yesterday... if you haven't tried it... oh you must! Slurp.co.uk - you need to stock up! I saw the new Royal Princess ship in the yard too - one which, fittingly, Kate Middleton will name and be the Godmother of. I hear ...shhh... Natasha Bedingfield will be trilling at the ceremony! After that lovely, buzzing, international buffet full of gorgeous Italian hams and little pots of rice and delicious chicken and bean dishes and... well, one of the tastiest buffets my figure has ever had the misfortune to encounter, we climbed back on the bus to celebrate in style. In sunny, gorgeous Venice, catching a water taxi down the canals to our destination in San Marco.
Travelling down the canals of Venice is an absolute joy And when in Venice, and you have a special toast to perform... where better to go than the famous Harry's Bar for Bellinis. I must confess, it's a place I have always wanted to go but never managed to find. No wonder - it's so understated from the outside with only etching on its glass doors to tell you it's there.
Inside it's quite small and the sort of place you might expect Hercule Poirot to frequent.
A Proscecco and Peach Bellini. If you're in Venice - you just have to...
Harry's Bar is next door to this place - our dining venue for the evening: The Monaco Grand Canal. (just to the left of St Mark's Square if you're looking at it from this angle). A building not unlike a Tardis - this hotel is so deep, I never found the back of it! And sitting at the table... this was my view...
The evening menu... as modelled by the lovely Keith...
Well, I just can't tell you how gorgeous it all was. The food was exquisite, the wine was as beautiful as the view and the company was fabulous. I've always wanted to have dinner in Venice and it excelled all my expectations. The sun blessed us, squeezing its every last drop out for us, shining brightly on the buildings and the water, just making a very special day totally and utterly perfect. It boded well for the new ship, we all thought. And, as well as a day crammed with lovely memories, I was given a souvenir of a piece of the same steel from which the keel was cut. Wish I could be around to see my great great etc. grandaughter trying to get it valued on Antiques Roadshow in a few hundred years :)
We caught a water taxi straight back to the airport, boarded the 10.50 plane home and zonked. The hotel bed in the Gatwick Hilton was a very welcome sight... but I could have quite happily stayed in Venice and woken up there. My next aim is to do exactly that. So - always wanted to say that I was 'jetting off to Venice for the day' and now I have. Perfect day - thanks to P & O for inviting me to share such a lovely experience and I look forward to sailing in the 'new baby'. After all, I knew her when she was nowt but a twinkle in the shipyard's eye :) Milly x

A Very Apie Ending for the Rugby Lads :)

Our Race Night was a great success thanks to a whole host of people – those who supported us with their presence, who gave us discounted pies, who sponsored races and events and donated raffle prizes. Thanks to them all we raised over £900 for our under 13 and under 14s rugby lads for well needed kit and essentials.
This blog is giving a huge thanks to those lovely people and local businesses who helped us have a great night. I use most of these businesses myself and can vouch for them (especially the restaurants and Jesse at Russell Eaton) so please have a poke around the links and give them some business.
Aroma – the café ‘up the Frank Bird Arcade’ that transforms into a fab Tapas Eaterie on Friday and Saturday nights . Watch out for their live music nights too – a real treat. Check out their menus on site. Smashing range of food and a real treat.
Bannatynes gym – who donated a spa voucher. I’m a member! Lovely gym and pool and the snack bar is to die for – though I’m sure that shouldn’t be my priority. The Spa is wonderful . Yummy massages!
Beatson House – oh my… one of my favourite eaterie places. They do the best steak! To my shame (and joy) my OH won one of the prizes they donated – a three course Sunday lunchl for two with wine. I told him to take his mum but if he does, he’s dead. They also supplied some of their gorge Boozy Infusion – which would make a fab pressy if you can resist opening the bottle before you wrap it. Available from Beatson House and also Rob RoydFarm Shop – best meat in Barnsley, lovely café (I have breakfast there a lot) and thanks to them also for the voucher they gave as a prize.
Billingley Christmas Tree Farm – official Christmas tree suppliers to our family, lovely people, lovely pet reindeer and a lovely place to visit. Inspired my book Winter Flame – which I will be selling and signing at BCTF on Saturday 15thDecember 12-2pm if anyone is looking for a last minute prezzie for a hard-to-buy-for auntie.
Brooklands at the ‘Holiday Inn’– another of my favourite eateries. Lovely central location for ‘do’s, I’m there more than I am at home!
Computer Problems of Barnsley – Rob has been a great friend of mine for years and once managed to find a whole book I’d lost AND HADN’T BACKED UP – and for that I am eternally grateful and he’s got my business for life. Friendly service, fair prices, no quibbles. What he doesn’t know about computers, you could write in big letters on a postage stamp
Debbie Viggiano – thanks to the lovely Debbie for sending me one of her books. She is also available to be hired as a JK Rowling lookalike ;)
Diane Stoker –(facebook link) ‘Official’ dress maker. Take her a picture of what you want and she makes it for you – gobsmackingly amazing. AND getting a dress made isn’t as expensive as you might think. And it saves me the soul-destroying trips around Meadowhall and ordeal by changing rooms. Di is a marvel.
Gate Fisheries – ‘Rolands’ - thanks for the fish and chip supper for two.
Gems – thanks for being so generous with vouchers for hairdos and massages. Based on Huddersfield Road they do some lovely packages as treats – even for Mums-to-be. Lovely present having a massage to look forward to after the chaos of Christmas.
Gillian Stapleton – an old friend and a marvel. Beautiful dress-maker and one of our Barnsley treasures that is buried away and should be taken out, polished and displayed. Gillian is a costumer historian – master of a needle and very popular speaker. Have a look at her website and see what she does. And she also makes beautiful hand-made bridal gowns. The very professional and affordable Gillott Builders - thank you. No obligation quotes from people who want to do a good job for a fair price with no one ripping anyone off. If only everyone were the same!HotHouse - wonderful local toiletries (the treat sort), lovely people and makers of the fabulous self-tanning products St Moriz that is the only stuff I can put on without looking a right old streaky mess. Romps over the pricier competitor at beauty award ceremonies :)
Karen Dyson – our deputy mayor, who took a detour to drop off raffle prizes on the night and always a fab supporter of local causes.
Keep Calm and Spray On (facebook link) – a great mobile service that does away with having to sneak home from a salon with flip flops and no bra on. You can be TOWIE coloured in the comfort of your own home or have a lovely subtle tan for a wedding/event. Pop-up booth, no mess. Give her a call for Christmas!
Lucia’s (facebook link) sandwich and catering business is on Doncaster Road and offers a ring up and ‘get-me-sarny-ready-for-pick-up’ service which is great if you don’t want to hang around. Lovely sandwiches and outside catering if you have a special event. Have a look at their services and menus.
Miranda Dickinson – thanks lovely M for sending me a signed book.
Old Vintage Retro (facebook site) - for collectible antiques and some great hark-back to times past. Some fab weird and wonderful 'diamonds in the rough' here :)
Russell Eaton – donated a cut and blow from my hairdresser Jesse – who is the best cutter and dyer I’ve EVER had. I’ve sent lots of friends to him and every one thinks he’s a total find.
Sha'Waddy's – the wonderfully well stocked fancy dress outlet on Sheffield Road, who helped me locate the moustaches for our Movember event. Didn’t know it existed until recently, but well worth a look if you’re partying in costume. Easy to get to and parking right outside.
Shaw Pub – thanks to Dave for hosting the event. We were having trouble finding a venue that wouldn’t bleed us dry (yep and I do mean you ‘local sports club’ – shame on you!) Dave stepped in, let us use the ovens for the grub, his TVs even his DJ for the sound system. As a result we made a great profit for the town lads.
Top Run Motorcycle Training – if you are interested in learning how to ride a motorbike properly and safely from someone who is a very experienced biker and teacher – give Dave a call. He donated a day’s course for some lucky bugger.
Simon and Schuster – my lovely publishers donated a Jesse J signed book and a Sam Faiers signed book – plus lots of sports books which the men were all drooling over!
Unique Hair – thanks to Keely for donating her coiffeuring services.
Yummy Yorkshire – world centre for ice-cream. Spent far too much money up there in their Ingbirchworth café. My favourite is the Trifle ice-cream. It’s in my top 50 flavours.Thank you EVERYONE from Angie 'The Pies', Traz 'The Everything Else' , the young Rugby Lads and myself xxxxxx
