Kentucky Mountain Mission

This week I am speaking to teens at the Kentucky Mountain Mission near Beattyville, Kentucky. The camp is on a mountain only a few miles from where Lois was born. (Folk from these parts have an endearing way of saying the name of their county when they are asked where they are from). The camp is in Lee County. Lois was born in Wolfe County just a few miles away. They are in the mountains of eastern Kentucky just on the edge of the Daniel Boone National Forest. The Natural Bridge State Park and the Red River Gorge are nearby.

Chapel is packed. I speak twice a day. Some of the campers are from Covington. Most of them are from the counties of eastern Kentucky. The mountain counties. Some of the campers come from Campton and Wolfe County, where Lois was born. My friend Sam Judd, who we met when he was traveling from Michael Card, lead the worship. A number of the campers have become followers of Christ this week already.

The camp is situated in a beautiful place with horses, a pool, a gymn, and a pond, but it only costs about a hundred dollars a week.

Food is good and simple. There are always fried apples at breakfast. I would say, other than those made my Lois’ grandmother Carley Banks, they are the best I’ve ever had. When they serve green beans they came from someone’s garden not from a can. Green beans from a can and green beans from a garden are just not the same thing. This morning they served biscuits and sausage gravy for breakfast. That’s a good way to start a day.

I walked this morning before breakfast to meditate. A thunderstorm brought cool air to the mountains last night. I slept well. the hills and forest were fresh and fragrant and the woods were alive with the chatter of birds, even a brief liquid trill of the Wood Thursh. Worship, thanksgiving, and humble dependance wash over my soul here.

Later this summer Hope and a couple others girls from Evangel will come here to serve in their Sunshine Week–camps for folk who have developmental challenges. It’s good place to serve.

Evangel allows me a few weeks a year to speak at camps and conferences. I’m grateful for that. I think it refreshes my soul and makes me a better pastor. God has been very kind to me to allow me to do this. He has given me the desire of my heart.

“Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalm 37:4)

A Sense of the Presence of the Lord

Last spring I was asked to speak at a conference in Texas. I did two plenary sessions, a youth session, and a session for pastors. The pastor’s session was held in a home on a lake. It was a beautiful morning. April in Michigan is often still winter-like but April in Texas was warm and flowering and green and spring, even summer-like. A large picture window afforded a view of the trees along the water.

The pastors filled every square foot of the the large living room and dining room. I had prepared a talk I called “The Village Parson.” I told the men that none of us were likely to have the ministry footprint of Charles Spurgeon but we could be the village preacher that Spurgeon always wrote to in his commentaries on the Psalms. We may not be visited with obvious success. They may not ask us to speak at the annual conference. They may not write up our story in the denominational magazine, but with God’s help we can be faithful and fruitful.

While I poured out my heart to the men to encourage them I had a growing sense of a special presence of the Lord filling the room. At the end of my hour I introduced the next speaker. He had not been present in the first hour but when he began to speak I could tell that he preached with unusual unction. I had heard him many times, but never before had I heard him speak with such obvious anointing. It was as if he was carried forward by the spirit present in the room. At the end of his talk I introduced the third speaker and I had to leave to speak in another session in another place.

The driver, a young man named David Waller, was the conference coordinator. He had been in the pastor’s sessions. We drove away quietly. For a while neither of us spoke. Finally David broke the silence and said; “Did you have a special sense of the presence of the Lord in that session?”

“I did. So powerfully.”

We drove on for a while in silence basking in the warmth of it.

I have often thought of that humble meeting of pastors by the lake and the powerful sense of the presence of the Lord we enjoyed. There was something in that simple meeting that no audio-visual specialist, no high-powered motivational expert, no enthusiastic leader, no denominational initiative can produce. It was just a small cluster of prayerful men humbly desiring to be used of the Lord lead their families and churches to follow Jesus. There was a great sweetness in it, a pleasing sense of joy.

I have often thought since then to seek the blessing of the Lord in our meetings and endeavors and wait quietly for the manifest presence of the Lord. What we need only God can do.

New Mexico Wedding

Daniel and Katelynn were married Sautrday in New Mexico in Katelynn’s childhood church. It was a beautiful weekend. All Daniel’s brothers and sisters flew in for the wedding.

Katelynn grew up in the city of Gallup. It was a delightful experience to visit such a unique place so different from where we live.

The ceremony was a beautiful testimony. Dan and Kate are both devoted believers. The wedding was lovely. Chuk and Hope sang. Lois took some beautiful photos. We will share them soon. I was privileged to bless the couple and bring a brief message.

Dan and Kate are on their honeymoon in Cancun now. They will live in Katy, Texas a western suburb of Houston.

Decoding Life

When I was a boy it seemed that the adult men that I was around spoke in secret code that I couldn’t fully understand. It was like I was listening to someone speak in a foreign language. I understood only bits and pieces here and there.

Mostly I was left with a with a large hole of mystery about manhood in my mind. I would lie awake in my bed at night and try to imagine what they meant by what they said. I wondered if I would ever understand well enough to navigate manhood.

My father was never that way. On long rides at night he would decode life for me and explain humanity and manhood to me in simple, clear, lucid terms that even a confused young boy could understand.

When we did chores or ran errands he patiently answered my questions without making me feel foolish for asking. Every boy should have a man in his life like that.

James, the brother of Jesus, said something like this: “If you have questions about life ask God. He is very generous with His answers and won’t rebuke you for asking.”
