The weather bureau was a little optimistic about today. It's all of six degreees outside right now and it's the middle of the day. I'm supposed to collect a parcel from the post office, but my hands are still frozen from sorting out bus passes on the way home from teaching so (unless I thaw soon) that will have to wait until tomorrow. I have more sorting out bus passes tomorrow (and buying tickets - my life is full of excitement) and the place where I sort out bus passes is a fair walk from t...

I've always wanted to know if gorgeous dark eyes would suit me. They do. I have temporarily lost my pale-eyed surprised look. My pupils are so dilated (lots of extra drops put in my eyes today to find out what's happening deep inside) that they look lovely.

Mind you, seeing text clearly is difficult. Not only do I have dilated pupils, I have orange drops and luminescent yellow specks seeping out of the corners of my big dark eyes. I shed a few multicoloured tears earlier and it was very i...

Today is exciting. Not too exciting. A broken tap fitting and a tap that ought to be able to be turned off but is sulking and a broken plunger and a shattered...I don't need to list the lot, do I? I've rung the plumber about the plumbing side and it will be fixed on Thursday. I'm getting my mostly-functional toilet fixed at the same time. I can't fix the plunger and other stuff, so I'm finding alternatives. Expresso coffee is actually nicer than plunger coffee and all I have to do is g...

My typo of the day is 'Charlemange.' He was a great emperor and he had a speckled beard, and he needed to see a vet.

Whenever I deal with the paper in my workpace/loungeroom/everythingarea I am befounded. It spawns. I put out 2 big lots of recycling and then I find more stashes of paper. I didn't stash this paper. It stashed itself. In between bookshelves, behind chairs, under chairs, on tables, under tables, on the kitchen bench, on the television, under the antenna. I'm sure there are places I've not yet discovered. The reason I'm sure is because I just found a whole new stash, behind my CDs.

The pap...

Apparently I'm a unit of measurement. Thanks, Nicole, for pointing that out!

I should probably put my own pictures of that gate (different units of measurement in my photos) up on my webpage sometime. I was thinking of doing a bit of an update later in the month anyway. Is there anything else you'd like to see on my webpage?

I am still under the influence of the Tooth of Evil (no infection, no tooth but still high pain) and this means I'm grumpy even when I shouldn't be. I pulled myself up a moment ago for being grumpy when I shouldn't be, however, and then realised that maybe I had cause for discontent.

At every meeting these last three weeks and in every class and twice in articles I've read a person has criticised a comment I have made or someone else has made. They preface those comment with "I haven't read ...

I keep losing bits of paper. Since these bits of paper are my external brain, this means I keep losing my brain. It also means that tomorrow is the Day of the Paper Sort. I shall try to make sense of my external brain. This is not a laughing matter.

I've found my Mexican chocolate (to make hot chocolate) and some rather good other chocolate. This is the fuel that will enable my undertaking.

Today's book is End of the Century, by Chris Roberson. It is so not the same as yesterday's book. ...

Dear Writer-who-shall-not-be-Named

You maybe should have read some modern historical fiction before writing your novel. You pulled basic research together with the skill of someone who has done it many times before, but you forgot to pull in accurate telling detail. Accurate telling detail (the small things, the illuminating things) can bring a novel to life. It's standard for modern historical fiction writers and, indeed, a great deal of good historical fantasy. Because you skimped, you've...

I'm making lists again. If I can get through my list today, then I shall practise my victory-laugh, because I'll only be about three days behind where I need to be by tomorrow night. I've already edited and sent out three articles. Another piece of writing has to be written from scratch (400 words done, and lots of notes to work from). I only have one book to read today and about three paperworky things (one very complicated, one bill baffling in its continued failure to be paid - I've tr...
