Hello

The first character that comes to mind is Lymond from Dorothy Dunnett’s Lymond Chronicles but those books are DENSE reads (brilliant but like a damn thicket). I absolutely adore The Curse Workers Trilogy by Holly Black (magical mafia). The Female of the Species by Mindy McGuinness isn’t fantasy but has a quality female antihero (rape and abuse tw). The Lies of Locke Lamora is a fantasy heist book (series is Gentleman Bastards) and is plenty violent, but Locke is a very cheerful thief, so not really cast in the same mold as Kaz? It is also definitely not YA. Ohhh and The Queen’s Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner. Gen is absolutely nothing like Kaz, but what a brilliant schemer. I just adore him.

Guys, help me out. Ruthless antihero sourpusses in Young Adult?

What inspired you to start writing?

I was an only child who lived on top of a hill and we didn’t have cable.

Marvelous people, so many good questions in my asks, but I’m afraid I’m too wiped out for a full binge. I promise to try to get to more next time

Hey Leigh! ❤️ When you started out writing and you decided to write YA fantasy, did you feel silly at all? I've been writing a story for a while and it's fantasy, and I always feel really self conscious when I tell ppl about it bc whenever I do, a lot of t

Yeah, unfortunately, there’s still a tremendous bias against genre fiction. But you may want to remind these kind people that the Iliad and the Odyssey are fantasy, that Spencer’s Faerie Queene is fantasy, that Shakespeare’s Tempest is fantasy, and that they are ALL taught in schools. (To say nothing of the magical realism of Marquez, Allende, Morrison, and Erdrich who are some of my all time favorite authors.)

Write what you love and remember that, when someone tries to shame you, it’s usually because they’re afraid of what you might accomplish if you stop caring what they think.

Just curious, but if you had to choose, would you prefer Six of Crows to be a tv series or a movie?

TV series for sure. I just don’t think you could finesse all of the flashbacks in a film. But I’m also not a screenwriter.

If the Crows had favorite musicals, what would they be?

Kaz - Hamilton

Inej - Hamilton

Nina - Hamilton

Wylan - Hamilton

Jesper - Hamilton

Matthias - Oklahoma

What ever happened to Imogen? The girl that young Kaz had a crush on when he and his brother was staying with Mr Hertzoon?

I think you mean Saskia. Her fate was originally written into Ch. 26 of Crooked Kingdom, but it was just too much. I might release that version of Kaz’s speech sometime. I don’t know though. There’s a reason things get cut.

(for the purposes of art) what are the heights of the main crows + kuwei?

Here ya go http://lbardugo.tumblr.com/post/150139722760/hi-leigh-how-tall-are-your-the-dregs-characters (though I think in my head, Inej is actually shorter hmmm). Kuwei is a tiny bit shorter than Wy.

Oh Leigh. I just started writing my own story on fictionpress and can I just say, you have ruined reading from me. You want to know why? Because every time I read SoC or CK, my literary self-esteem just drops into the Mariana Trench. How are you so wonder

You’re awfully kind! Thanks for giving my ego such a pat.

All I can say is that my first drafts are terrible. My work really only becomes my work in revision. One of the most important lessons I learned as a writer was not to compare my first drafts to the books I love—because NONE of them are first drafts.

The first draft is where you tell yourself the story. Let yourself off the hook and let it be bad! Trust the process of revising and revisiting to get you to something wonderful. Good luck

What do you think about turning the Six of Crows duology into an anime series?

True confession: I don’t know much about anime. From what I do know, I think it would be a good fit for the books, but we’ve never been approached on it.
