NASTY BOYS
A nurse I met in an obstetrician's office told me she could always determine the sex of a baby from the ultra sound images. She said if you saw a fetus with both hands floating in the air it was a girl. But if you saw only one hand it was a boy. "Why's that?" [...]

Long Live the "Queen"
Not speaking here of Elizabeth or Latifah, but Oprah. At the risk of alienating millions of Americans, I am critical of Oprah Winfrey's interminable, self-indulgent farewell to her fans over the past 25 years of "The Oprah Winfrey Show."  Did I miss the day she was appointed or anointed "Queen of America?" Let me make [...]

Be Happy, But Do Worry
Am I glad Osama bin Laden is dead?  Yes.  Do I think the American people are now more safe from terrorism?  No, not at all.  We may be in more danger. I worry about how members of Al-Qaeda reacted after hearing that the United States finally got their hero and leader, and shot him to [...]

Dumb and Getting Dumber
You've seen snippets of their ignorance on Jay Leno's "Jaywalking" feature on late night TV.  Dumb Americans.  After struggling to name   the date of Independence Day and failing, they giggle.  "Ha, ha, ha," we laugh back, when we should be crying, "Boo, hoo, hoo."  Americans can't be that stupid.  Well, there's more proof they are. [...]

Changing Identities
I didn't want to move to Boston.  My husband and I were quite content in Washington, DC, where we had made our home and raised our two children over 32 years.  But after retirement we, like many other Baby Boomers, considered where we might want to spend the rest of our lives.  I could still [...]

Here We Go Again
First Afghanistan.  Then Iraq.  Back to Afghanistan.  Now Libya.  Do the American people want this?  Do they need this?  With the economy still playing teeter-totter, this risky gambit in North Africa is going to cost a lot of taxpayer money and probably cost American lives. As I write, this country's awesome military might is being [...]

Where's My Book?
It's been three months since my book, NewsLady, went on sale.  From what I can tell sales have been brisk, but I don't have any dollar figures from Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble or Author House.  I never expected to write a best seller, but way in the back of my mind there was a tiny [...]

Still Just a Woman
The announcement from CBS News was horrifying.  Lara Logan, the network's chief foreign affairs correspondent, suffered "a brutal and sustained sexual assault" in Cairo.  I turned the words around in my head:  "brutal," "sustained" and "sexual assault."  She was beaten, as well.  I could only imagine that she had experienced the worst physical attack a [...]

Egypt: "Kill the Messengers"
The massive crackdown on foreign journalists in Egypt is unprecedented.  Reporters and photographers are being beaten, detained, harassed, intimidated and even threatened with beheading.  I used to work with some of the reporters and camera crews. They had gathered in Cairo–journalists from countries all over the world–to cover a major international story, which may have [...]

Mr. President: What About Guns?
You missed the boat Mr. President.  Big Time. You gave a great State of the Union Address, but you shrank from leadership when it came to one of the critical issues plaguing the country:  every year tens of thousands of deaths by firearms. The National Rifle Association and many members of Congress favor easy access [...]
