Fight the stigma

On Sunday night, screenwriter Graham Moore (The Imitation Game) accepted the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. In his thank you speech, he mentioned that he, like the character he wrote about on screen, knew what it was like to struggle with depression and suicide. He dedicated his win to the kids who feel out of place, saying: “And now I’m standing here. And so I would like for this moment to be for that kid out there who feels like she’s weird or she’s different or she doesn’t fit in anywhere: Yes you do. I promise you do. Stay weird, and then when it’s your turn, and you are the one standing on this stage, please pass this message on.”

Let’s talk about mental health. As the Guardian notes in a recent article, a lot of YA authors are starting to address these issues on the pages of their books, but we can do more. Know someone who’s struggling? Let them know it’s okay to talk about it. Are you struggling? You’re not alone. Let’s reach out to others.
