Me with Lynne Tillman at Portland Institute for Contemporary Art yesterday. One of of my favorite writers, and a dear friend since the early 1990s, but I hadn’t seen her in years. She was in Portland for the launch of her book Weird Fucks, published by New Herring Press in a beautiful edition with color paintings by Amy Sillman.

Trying

She looks like a 14-year-old boy, but she’s a 20-year-old woman. She asks a fellow passenger on the light rail if she can borrow his phone to call the group home she’s just moved into. The train is delayed, and she’s worried about losing her place there for breaking curfew. She was homeless, and had to wait for more than a year to get into the group home, where she can spend two years learning the skills she needs to create and keep a stable life. “It’s a really...

My first book, published in 1989 (to which I’m currently planning a sequel), is temporarily free on Kindle.

- Scottish Field

"I’m there when it gets dark to kill you if I can…"

The Bogey Man’s sinister chant used to scare the wits out of Gary Scott when he was a five-year-old, growing up in the worst part of Glasgow. But now, nearly twenty years later, he’s an experienced, and he likes...
