This being Portland, the Mayoral candidates range from establishment, through viable outsiders, through naive, through lunatic fringe. The latter is represented by rapper and activist Jesse Sponberg, who I heard declare that cancer doctors don’t want cancer to be cured, and people who serve the homeless want homelessness to continue, because in both cases their job security depends on the problem.

Architecture for Burglars

I’ve been reading A Burglar’s Guide to the City by Geoff Manaugh, a great read and an impressive work of research. It reminded me of why I like urban apartment buildings—when I walk in wealthy suburbs, I’m always struck by how the design of the houses is based on the presumption that no one is going to try to break into them. But, as Manaugh shows, building security anywhere is an illusion. There are only varying levels of insecurity.
I’d say that’s true of everything.

The Tyranny of Loving-Kindness

Someone asked me what I think about loving-kindness meditation. I replied:
