newyorker:

Should we limit the political power that the ignorant have in a democracy? A new book argues yes.

I say yes too. Before being issued with a driver’s license, we’re required to prove we know how to drive. The same should apply to voting, which gives us the power to harm many more people than we could by driving incompetently.

Steve Novick Concedes, Chloe Eudaly Unseats Incumbent And Wins Seat On Portland City Council

The Fishmonger’s Violin

Bart Lessard asked me for suggestions for“a fake title for an utterly middle-of-the road literary novel.”

My suggestions includedThe Land of Perhaps, Forecast of Storms, The Echoes of Loss, and Marianne’s Bicycle. But we agreed that by far my best was The Fishmonger’s Violin. Indeed, I think I should be awarded an honorary MFA for this. Hell, just give me the Nobel Prize for Literature in case I ever write it, in the same spirit as they gave Obama the Nobel Prize for Peace based on what he mig...
