I grew up in Danville, Virginia and set out to be a physicist, studied at MIT and Columbia, participated in atomic bomb tests at Bikini and worked as a nuclear physicist at Los Alamos. I worked with the Federation of American Scientists in Washington DC, a scientists’ organization dedicated to avoiding nuclear warfare. I attended Columbia Medical School, did my internship and residency at Stanford, and was a pioneer in developing the new field of nuclear medicine, the use of radioactive isotopes for diagnosis and treatment. I have been on the medical faculties of Stanford and the University of California and for many years was Chairman of the Department of Nuclear Medicine at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco.
