The Humble Dynamite MEGA Holidays Bundle is on!
Pay what you want for 143 great comics and support The cbldf, doctorswithoutborders, and the Make-a-Wish Foundation.
And yes that’s a FREE copy of Red Sonja #7 by gailsimone waiting for just for stopping by humblebundle.com/books today!
I love these humble bundles with comics, I can’t keep away from them.
This is over $600 worth of comics by top creators like Bill Willingham, Mark Waid, Kevin Smith and lots more, for whatever you want to pay for them, but what you DO pay, a portion of it goes to great charities.
It’s 143 comics, and many of them are great, and some I can’t wait to read. I get a bunch of these comics for free and I’m still buying this deal.
Also, I have a couple books in there!
How do you stay not bitter over Stephanie Batgirl? I was a huge fan of the character and the book and was extremely upset when the New 52 came along and took it away. Now all the attention the Cameron Stewart Batgirl book is getting is reopening old wounds
Firstly, let me thank you for reading Steph’s run as Batgirl. It was a joy to write and create — hopefully in equal amount to that which you experienced upon reading.
Secondly — this is where I might come off as blunt and cross, but I’m just being honest, and in no way trying to diminish the loss/lack/want you’re feeling with regards to that character — being bitter about something that happened almost 4 years ago - here and now - would just be silly.
From a writing standpoint, when you step onto a title/take over a character in the world of the “Big Two”, it’s a rental property. You’re playing with someone else’s toys in someone else’s sandbox. ANY amount of time a writer has to play - be it one issue, or, in our case, twenty-five, is a positive. At some point, the run will end. At some point, sales will dip. At some point, Editorial will rightly so feel there needs to a shake-up to get things back on track from their side of things.
I was given two issues’ notice to wrap things up. Since I was ahead, that was more notice than many other writers got on their respective titles. So I had a chance to really refine and streamline and crystallize what I wanted to say about Stephanie Brown in those two issues. If we had gone on for another 5/10/20 issues, would the final issue have been the same? Would it have resonated as well? Would it have been as bittersweet? There’s no way to know for sure.
As for what’s happening (or not) in the present, I would challenge you to not waste emotional energy on what “the other fans are getting from their characters”. It’s an exhausting pursuit that will likely leave you angrier than when you started.
Yes, Steph isn’t as present; she’s here and there in Eternal, as Spoiler. She’ll apparently be back in the side-ribbing as a Batgirl for Convergence. Gail did a wonderful job with my special friend in “Batgirl: Future’s End”. We even snuck in the “spirit” of Stephanie through Babs as Nightwing in Smallville Season 11. Do I miss writing her? Every day. Do you miss reading her? Sounds like we’re in the same boat.
However:
Don’t focus on what you don’t have, but what you do — that’s the Stephanie way!
Hi! I remember a while back when someone asked about the likelihood of a New52 Secret Six that you said Catman was not able to be used unless it was someone new altogether so I was wondering, how hard was it for you to get Catman off the bench?
Okay, going off of my memory and not much sleep…
Here’s what happened. I wanted to bring Catman back, into the new52. I wasn’t trying to get a new Secret Six book going, I was trying to bring him back in Batgirl.
But the editor said I could only bring him back if he was a completely new character, completely different from Thomas Blake whom we had just revamped, in line with the edicts of the new52.
I did not have a problem with this, it’s the editor’s prerogative to make those kinds of mandates. But thinking about it, I had just spent a LOT of time and effort re-envisioning Thomas Blake into the Catman we knew in Secret Six and I just felt that if he was going to be re-created, it would be better if someone else did it.
It wasn’t contentious or anything and I understood the thinking. But I just thought about it and I didn’t want to remake him so soon after remaking him once, at least not and have him be so unrecognizable.
Again, it’s perfectly within editorial’s rights to ask. But I just didn’t want to be the one to do it. I would have been fine with someone else doing a cool new take.
As it turned out, the doors opened, Dan DiDio personally asked if I would bring back Secret Six and I think we all immediately felt that it wouldn’t be the Six without Catman.
This version is still different, but it’s still Thomas Blake, and I am having a blast.

Mrs Simone I lost the address to that Tumblr you and a couple other pros started I think It was called the Comics industry toolbox could you post a link to it again?

Hello! I was wondering if their is any tips you could give to a writer suffering from the dreaded writers block?
Yes, my advice is always, always the same on this.
Write something else. Seriously, write something fun that has no anxiety attached. If I am not doing multiple projects my production slows to a crawl.
Having more than one project means you aren’t in the anxiety/frustration/depression cycle that comes from being stuck on one project.
Write something fun and short, get that out of your system. Put your other thing away for a day or two.
My other guaranteed solution was a long walk with my dog, I never had a plot problem that didn’t get solved by a long, quiet walk with a good dog.
What did you think of Secret Six #1?
Is it out? I haven’t read it.
