The Risky Business of Writing About Sex

Just found out my guest post is up on The Quivering Pen, a wonderful blog created by the writer David Abrams. David generously offered space for a short piece I've written on the challenges of writing about sex in fiction. Chances are great that you'll end up with something trite, over the top, or simply ridiculous. For a long time, my fiction side-stepped sex, but given the nature of Sleeping with Patty Hearst, I finally had to face it head-on.

How to plot a story, South Park style

Imagine you're sitting in your writing class at NYU, minding your own business, when the door opens and Matt Stone and Trey Parker, the two creators of South Park, amble in. This video clip shows their lively lesson in creating a good plot. It's not about "and then, and then ...," it's about "but."

p.s. I don't watch South Park, but my son likes to describe his favorite episodes, and it sounds pretty funny.

New review from Ashley Memory

Many thanks to Ashley Memory (author of NAKED AND HUNGRY, a terrific novel, coming out soon) for posting this kind review here and on Amazon.

From Ashley:
"I was hooked the moment I read the first line of this exquisite book [Sleeping with Patty Hearst]. ... As a child of the seventies, I could identify with the paradox presented by the themes of liberation and the ties of family. Yet Moore navigates the tricky emotional landscape with authority, compassion, and uncommon eloquence. Lily, the teenage protagonist, emerges as the strongest and most mature character in the story. I admired her loyalty to her sister and her desire to view her mother as sympathetically as she could. She overcomes the sting of heartbreak with courage and seems to ultimately recognize that she is responsible for her own happiness, which is a lesson for us all. I highly recommend this book and it will be one I will re-read many times."

Thank you, Ashley!
