Who Needs Money? Part 3

I hope you enjoy the conclusion of our three part tribute to Jim Rohn.

If you missed the first two blogs, click here! So far Jim covered the following:

Time
Desperation
determination
Courage
Ambition
Faith

But what about . . .

ingenuity1-250
7. Ingenuity

Putting your brains to work. Probably up until now, you’ve put about 1/10 of your brainpower to work. What if you employed the other 9/10? You can’t believe what can happen. Humans can come up with the most intriguing things to do. Ingenuity. What’s ingenuity worth? A fortune. It is more valuable than money. All you need is a $1 and plenty of ingenuity. Figuring out a way to make it work, make it work, make it work.

What matters is somebody’s willingness, somebody’s ingenuity, somebody’s willingness to try. ~ Jim Rohn

8. Heart and Soul

What is a substitute for heart and soul? It’s not money. Money can’t buy heart and soul. Heart and soul is more valuable than a million dollars. A million dollars without heart and soul, you have no life. You are ineffective. But, heart and soul is like the unseen magic that moves people, moves people to buy, moves people to make decisions, moves people to act, moves people to respond.

Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change.

~Jim Rohn

9. Personality

You’ve just got to spruce up and sharpen up your own personality. You’ve got plenty of personality. Just get it developed to where it is effective every day, it’s effective no matter who you talk to – whether it is a child or whether it is a business person – whether it is a rich person or a poor person. A unique personality that is at home anywhere.

My mentor Bill Bailey taught me, “You’ve got to learn to be just as comfortable, Mr. Rohn, whether it is in a little shack in Kentucky having a beer and watching the fights with Winfred, my old friend or in a Georgian mansion in Washington, DC as the Senator’s guest.” Move with ease whether it is with the rich or whether it is with the poor. And it makes no difference to you who is rich or who is poor. A chance to have a unique relationship with whomever. The kind of personality that’s comfortable. The kind of personality that’s not bent out of shape.

And lastly, let’s not forget charisma and sophistication. Charisma with a touch of humility. This entire list is more valuable than money. With one dollar and the list I just gave you, the world is yours. It belongs to you, whatever piece of it you desire whatever development you wish for your life. I’ve given you the secret. Capital. The kind of capital that is more valuable than money and that can secure your future and fortune. Remember that you lack not the resources.

You must take personal responsibility. You cannot change the circumstances, the seasons, or the wind, but you can change yourself. ~ Jim Rohn

Who Needs Money? Part 2

twoo_r04a_clean_prasad 011522.jpg

After last week’s blog left us with the question “Now what must you invest?”

The answer is . . .

4. Courage

Courage is more valuable than capital. If you’ve only got $1 and a lot of courage, I’m telling you, you’ve got a good future ahead of you. Courage in spite of the circumstances. Humans can do the most incredible things no matter what happens. Haven’t we heard the stories? There are some recent ones from Kosovo that are some of the most classic, unbelievable stories of being in the depths of hell and finally making it out. It’s humans. You can’t sell humans short. Courage in spite of, not because of, but in spite of. Now once Lydia has made 3 or 4 sales and gotten going, here’s what now takes over.

Don’t say, “If I could, I would.” Say, “If I can, I will.

~ Jim Rohn

5. Ambition

“Wow! If I can sell 3, I can sell 33. If I can sell 33, I can sell 103.” Wow. Lydia is now dazzled by her own dreams of the future.

When you know what you want, and want it bad enough, you will find a way to get it

~ Jim Rohn

6. Faith

Now she begins to believe she’s got a good product. This is probably a good company. And she then starts to believe in herself. Lydia, single mother, 2 kids, no job. “My gosh, I’m going to pull it off!” Her self esteem starts to soar. These are investments that are unmatched. Money can’t touch it. What if you had a million dollars and no faith? You’d be poor. You wouldn’t be rich. Now here is the next one, the reason why she’s a millionaire today.

Goals. There’s no telling what you can do when you get inspired by them. There’s no telling what you can do when you believe in them. There’s no telling what will happen when you act upon them.

~ Jim Rohn

Who Needs Money? Part 1

I’ll be working on some new blog topics over the next few weeks so in the interim I’d like to share a three part series from the late, great Jim Rohn.  I changed the title and also added a few of Jim’s quote for emphasis.

Enjoy!

money

When starting any enterprise or business, whether it is full-time or part-time, we all know the value of having plenty of capital (money). But I bet we both know or at least have heard of people who started with no capital who went on to make fortunes. How? You may ask.

Well, I believe there are actually some things that are more valuable than capital that can lead to your entrepreneurial success. Let me give you the list.

1. Time

Time is more valuable than capital. The time you set aside not to be wasted, not to be given away. Time you set aside to be invested in an enterprise that brings value to the marketplace with the hope of making a profit. Now we have capital time.

How valuable is time? Time properly invested is worth a fortune. Time wasted can be devastation. Time invested can perform miracles so you invest your time.

Time is more valuable than money. You can get more money, but you cannot get more time. ~ Jim Rohn

2. Desperation

I have a friend Lydia, whose first major investment in her new enterprise was desperation. She said, “My kids are hungry, I gotta make this work. If this doesn’t work, what will I do?” So she invested $1 in her enterprise selling a product she believed in. The $1 was to buy a few fliers so she could make a sale at retail, collect the money and then buy the product wholesale to deliver back to the customer.

My friend Bill Bailey went to Chicago as a teenager after he got out of high school. And the first job he got was as a night janitor. Someone said, “Bill, why would you settle for night janitor?” He said, “Malnutrition.” You work at whatever you can possibly get when you get hungry. You go to work somewhere — night janitor, it doesn’t matter where it is. Years later, now Bill is a recipient of the Horatio Alger award, rich and powerful and one of the great examples of lifestyle that I know. But, his first job — night janitor. Desperation can be a powerful incentive. When you say – I must.

We generally change ourselves for one of two reasons: inspiration or desperation.

~ Jim Rohn

3. Determination

Determination says I will. First Lydia said, “I must find a customer.” Desperation. Second, she said, “I will find someone before this first day is over.” Sure enough, she found someone. She said, “If it works once, it will work again.” But then the next person said, “No.” Now what must you invest?

How long should you try? Until.

So You Think You Can Multi Task?

Concentrate all your thoughts on the task at hand. The sun’s rays do not burn until brought to a focus. ~Alexander Graham bell

r-MULTITASKING-large570

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but there is no such thing as multitasking. Not in the sense that you are actually accomplishing two things at once.

Fact: The brain can only focus on one thing at a time.

While some people might think they can study and watch TV, or text while driving, they are not grasping the reality of what’s going on. In reality they are temporarily switching from one task to the other, which means that one task will always be neglected. If you have any doubt that multitasking is impossible, it’s quite easy to prove.

Picture someone walking down the street. They receive a text message and look down at the phone to read it and then respond. In order to read or send a text while they’re walking they must look down at the phone. Therefore they’re not looking in the direction they’re headed.

That’s why something like this happens . . .

If it was possible to multitask this lady would not need a dry set of clothes.

You can of course rapidly toggle between the phone and the floor, looking like a bobble head, but you’re certainly not doing two things at once. You are doing two separate things poorly.

First Things First

While people may convince themselves multitasking makes them more productive, it’s hardly true. We have become less productive and more distracted.

Have you ever had to read the same sentence in a book several times? That’s because there is something that distracted you at that moment. A ringing phone, a thought about the prior sentence, or some other thought, or maybe something caught your ear on TV. Either way your focus is interrupted because you will stop reading when your brain goes into another thought or signals an action.

You must prioritize important tasks and see them through to fruition. A text message can wait unless it’s urgent. This in turn will teach people to respect your time. You cannot be immediately or instantly available at all times to everyone, but you can be available for the most important things. You must be willing to accomplish those things that are important or that are a responsibility. This means you have to focus.

Clowning Around

Is it possible to do two things at once? Yes, if you consider walking and chewing gum impressive. While I’m joking, chewing gum and walking at the same time really has nothing to do with cognitive processing. Chewing gum is not a cognitive skill and chewing gum while walking does not impede the person’s ability to process information.

When it comes to business and our time, it’s not possible — nor is it ever beneficial (usually) — to multitask. In fact, recent research has shown that that switching from one task to another takes a serious toll on productivity. Those who multitask have more trouble tuning out distractions than people who focus on one task at a time. Also, doing many different things at once can actually impair cognitive ability. Ouch!

We know that:

According to some researchers, multitasking can reduce productivity by approximately forty-percent.
Switching from one task to another makes it difficult to tune out distractions causing mental blocks that can slow down your progress.

It’s important to understand and accept that the human brain handles tasks in a sequential manner, one at a time. Although switching back and forth between tasks at our command is possible, it happens so rapidly we might think we’re multitasking but don’t be fooled, the human brain will always be distracted from one task while it is focusing on another.

I just dropped my iPhone in my soup. I think it might be time to tone down the multitasking. ~ Emma Watson

Don’t be distracted, be productive.

Profiles in Success! Life is a Circus

Well, that’s a stretch . . . of faith.

cirque_du_soleil___kooza

Guy Laliberté began his career on the streets. He could be seen playing accordion, walking on stilts and eating fire. If you live in a city like mine, New York City, then you might see these types of acts everywhere. Why is this one different?

Guy, even though he was often on stilts took a leap of faith by bringing a performing troupe from Quebec to the Los Angeles for the Arts Festival.  He did this without having a return flight, which reminds me of this blog.

As you may guess, his risk taking paid off, and the circus group was eventually brought to Las Vegas, where they became the now world famous Cirque du Soleil. Today, Laliberté is the CEO and worth over 2.5 billion dollars.

Fuel your passion with action and take some calculated risks!

So we shall let the reader answer this question for himself: who is the happier man, he who has braved the storm of life and lived or he who has stayed securely on shore and merely existed?

Believe it or not?

Believe you can and you’re halfway there.

~ Theodore Roosevelt

featuredimages_s18

Have you have ever read motivational books, or have seen the movie The Secret, or even just listened to an encouraging DVD or a live session and heard someone say “if you believe it, you can achieve it”? They are telling you if you want something badly enough and believe it with all of your might, you can make it so.

One of the times I heard John Maxwell speak he said that this just isn’t true. He asked, what if he wanted to be a ballerina? Could he? Now if you haven’t seen John, he’s a little on the stocky side, so he’s not exactly the usual ballerina type. While his statement may get a laugh, I think that his point that he could not ever be a ballerina is completely wrong.

The truth is that he can become a male ballet dancer, if he wanted to. While he may never be good enough to perform at Lincoln Center, he could take ballet classes and actually learn to dance. If he did that, he may even end up in better condition and able to perform in front of an audience, who knows? I mean he is in his 60s now, but who knows?

Will he be a famous dancer? No, probably not. But here’s my point. Why would John Maxwell ever have such a desire to begin with? The fact is he wouldn’t. That’s not his calling. It’s probably not even a passing fancy. He had other interests that he felt strongly about and he pursued them.

You see we’re not usually given desires or dreams that we cannot carry out.

Sleep Walking

To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe.

~ Anatole France

You can make your dream a reality. A great example of this is Muggsy Bogues.

At 5’ 3” tall, Muggsy is the shortest player to ever play in the NBA. Think about that, a ”short” basketball player. We can assume that many people told him to forget it, he’d never make it. Right? But he felt in his heart that he could do it, had a passion and worked for it. He thought he could live out that dream, and he did. In fact as of this writing he is the Charlotte Hornets’ career leader in minutes played (19,768), assists (5,557), steals (1,067) and turnovers (1,118).

How does this relate to you?

Would you do something if you thought you would fail? Of course not. So if you accepted a job, you initially had to think you could succeed at it, or you wouldn’t have started.  You had to realize that since other people do it successfully, you could too. No one sets out to be average, or to struggle to get by or completely fail. So if it was a valid opportunity and you thought you could do well at it, well, what’s stopping you?

The economy may be changing, but the opportunity remains for those who are experts in their field. It has always been that way, and will always be that way. The cream rises to the top. Be the cream.

Here’s the takeaway:

Where can you improve? In product or service or expertise? Sales skills? Networking? Social media? Actually working? Whatever it is, get busy and go for it. Set records.

You got this!

On Purpose: Don’t live your life by accident

There comes a special moment in everyone’s life, a moment for which that person was born. That special opportunity, when he seizes it, will fulfill his mission—a mission for which he is uniquely qualified. In that moment he finds greatness. It is his finest hour.

~Winston Churchill

life-purpose

Why are you here? Is it to be a great parent? A movie star? An author? A Doctor? Do you know what your purpose is? What is it that you are called to do? If you don’t know what that is, maybe you can recall one thing that you always wanted to do back when you were a child which still makes sense today? Or what would you love to do right now?

As a teenager I wanted to be a rock star. But as they say, life happened. After a car accident left me injured and unable to play (temporarily), I broke down and got a real job. However I didn’t give up entirely. With the support of some great people I kept the dream alive and got my fix by writing music. Eventually I started drumming again, got my break, went on tour, got radio airplay and shared the stage with some of the very same rock stars I looked up to, including Sebastian Bach, Rob Halford, members of Twisted Sister and Anvil.

Very often we do things by accident. We might end up in a job that doesn’t reflect our passions or doesn’t take advantage of our true talents. Maybe we select a partner who doesn’t fit well enough into our own personality and likes and dislikes. If you like yourself you won’t look for someone who is completely the opposite, because over time that can create opposition.

It’s the same thing in a job. If you choose a career for the money, maybe your motive is off. Also, you might not see the stress that comes with that type of position. If you take on a position because of the passion that it ignites in you then the money will come, even though money may not matter as much because you are living your purpose on a daily basis.

To dream . . .

When I was trying to figure out my own purpose someone asked me this question: What’s the first thing you think about in the morning? If your first thought is “Get me coffee!”, that doesn’t necessarily mean that’s your purpose, although it worked out pretty well for the owner of Starbucks.

Another question to ask yourself is this: What would you do if you didn’t need the money? If you think of lounging on the beach all day you might be selling yourself short. However, maybe you should own a bar or little shop on an island somewhere.

The point is, discover or rediscover what your passion is and dream big! Where do your talents lie? And if you feel that you’re out of the loop, you can always learn the talents necessary to propel your passion forward. So don’t let that stop you. It’s possible that you may have many talents or interests. See if you can connect the dots and create a career path for yourself out of those talents.

It’s always easier to do what you enjoy. You will excel at it because you’re fully equipped for it. When we’re not pursuing what we love and enjoy or are best suited for, it’s not a fun journey. Deep down inside we know we are meant for more. Search within your heart and soul and reignite your passion. Do it on purpose.

Follow your light and brighten the world!

Fly to The Angels

getimage.exe

I was fascinated with airplanes when I was a child. Growing up very close to New York’s JFK airport allowed me the opportunity to watch these colossal bird-like beasts gracefully cutting through the sky on a daily basis. I would be playing in the schoolyard, hear one coming, and always look up in wonder. At times they seemed so close that you could almost rub their bellies.

I suppose you could say I was in awe of how magnificent this flying feat was. To this day I’m still blown away by it. You’ll catch me observing these winged creatures for longer than most people do as they pass overhead. I’d venture to guess that on a subconscious level, airplanes represent a sense of freedom to me. Doesn’t everyone want to have the ability to fly?

I can’t resist

Even though it might seem that I’m feeling a bit nostalgic, which may be true on some level, that’s not the point of this. You see, as a child I had no idea how these things worked, as in, how did this heavy metal contraption fly? After doing some research, the most incredible thing I learned was that airplanes took off into the wind. One would think that an airplane would need to move along with the wind to help it propel itself into the air, yet that’s not the case. Rather than get into the physics of it, let’s focus on how this can apply to your success.

An airplane is able to both take off, and land more efficiently and effectively by using resistance. It allows the plane to take off faster, and it slows down the plane more quickly during the landing. Many of us have encountered resistance in our lives and careers. Maybe we shared an idea with someone and they shot it down, or we hit a stumbling block while developing a plan or launching a business, but we must always remember, opposition is often an important part of the opportunity to soar to new heights.

Fasten your seat belt

Don’t react to stumbling blocks with discouragement, instead, look at in a non-emotional manner and try to figure out how you can benefit from it. Take criticism at face value and evaluate whether it has any truth to it. Truth that might have a lesson in it. Ask yourself the following;

What can you do to make the opportunity better?
What resistance in your life can ultimately help?
Is there a lesson in it for you?
What can you learn about your limitations and improve upon them?
Are there new ways to try something?
Are you taking on too much by yourself and do you need help?
Rather than include others who might not embrace the opportunity, would it be better if you did it alone or replaced them?
Could any negative comments you’re hearing be warning signs of what might deter potential customers from utilizing your product or service?
Is your business plan sound?

Whether you encounter resistance in your personal life, or your professional life, evaluate the speed bumps and see how you might be able to use them to your advantage. Look for the opportunity in the problem, not the problem in the opportunity. Do not be deterred, but do not simply dismiss it, always try to learn from it. This will allow you to grow and then you too can use resistance to take flight and land successfully at your desired destination. Even if you arrive late, you’ll still get there.

I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.

Can You Feel It?

motivation

Every now and then I wake up and just don’t feel motivated. I might be a little tired; in fact, I swear that sometimes my life is a series of naps! On these types of days the last thing I want to do is write my blog. Yes, it happens. And since I don’t drink coffee or energy drinks, well . . . you get the point. We all have days like this. And it’s very tempting to play hooky. We want to call in sick to work, hit the snooze button, or put things off until we’re feeling better.

The problem is that letting your priorities or passion go can become a bad habit which derails you.

Do you have more days that you take it easy than the days where you get up and go get em? It’s very easy to settle into lazy mode, especially since we have more than enough things to distract us or frustrate us, things that prevent us from achieving our goals.

Mean it!

What exactly does the word motivation mean? Motivate means “to provide with a motive.” Or, in the etymological sense, an “inner or social stimulus for an action.” Simply put, it’s a reason to do something, an inspiration, or, something that encourages you to take action. It can come from within, or be motivated by others. It’s funny, a paycheck doesn’t always seem to keep people very motivated does it? No, and I’ll get to why later. It seems we often seek something more.

It’s almost unfair that as children we usually have a parent, teacher or coach who encourages us, or keeps us on track. They wake us up for school, encourage us to hang in there, and go the extra mile. Then as adults we’re responsible for our own success, and often responsible for our own motivation.

Of course motivation is not permanent. But then, neither is bathing; but it is something you should do on a regular basis. ~Zig Ziglar

Feel it!

Do something every day that motivates you, and then act on it. This way you are living the life you deserve on a daily basis. You’ll be impacting others as well as yourself in a positive way, and you’ll feel better about yourself, each and every day.

Here are a few things that might inspire you.

▪   Read the bible for daily motivation, it’s very empowering.

▪   Think of  a newborn in your family and the impact you can have on their future.

▪   Catch a sunrise or sunset and bask in the opportunity or reflect on accomplishments.

▪   Embrace a new love in your life, whether it’s a person, or a hobby.

▪   Put a picture of a new car or home in front of you to motivate you.

▪   Read daily motivational quotes.

▪   Create new goals.

▪   Volunteer. Helping others is very inspiring.

▪   Being able to take care of yourself and your family should be very motivating.

▪   Exercise. This alone can inspire you to action.

▪   Focus on a goal and the positive results of achieving it

Add your own inspiration to this list. Moving along the road toward accomplishment can fuel the rest of the journey.

And will you succeed? Yes indeed, yes indeed! Ninety-eight and three-quarters percent guaranteed! ~Dr Suess

Own it!

Money does not drive everyone. In fact, there are two distinct ways that people are inspired. Yes, the first is fueled by material things like money, a bonus, a trip or a prize. Yet many other people are motivated by the desire to feel appreciated. They want recognition. They feel good about themselves because they were applauded and appreciated and that will inspire them want to do more, and do it well.

You may often hear of an employee complaining that they don’t feel appreciated at work.  That’s not about money, it’s about recognition. Do you need a carrot dangled in front of you? Or would you prefer a pat on the back? Figure out what motivates you and then position yourself to stay that way.

While it is, or should be the responsibility of an employer to learn how each employee is motivated and then cater to them directly, sadly, we are surrounded by people who don’t know how to encourage as much as they should.  They often choose to point out what we did wrong rather than correct us, assist in fixing it or even praise us for the good we did.

Many don’t know how to inspire others properly, they either weren’t taught to or didn’t learn how to do it. That is their responsibility. Once we recognize that simple words of encouragement during a struggle, or after a failure are worth far more than hype or true praise after success, we will be a more productive, happy, motivated force in this world.

“If you have no one to encourage you, instead of using that as an excuse for failure, encourage yourself and use that as a reason why you must succeed.”

~Kevin Ngo

Do it!

Everything that you need is already available to you and always has been. You merely have to tap into what inspires you, every day. If each day, you remind yourself of exactly what impels you, what your goals are and the steps required to achieving them, wouldn’t you be more hopeful and positive and therefore create better results?

The fact is this; NO ONE will support, encourage or motivate you more than you should and can. Our bosses, employees, spouses, friends and children will be there some of the time, but they all have their own lives. So it is up to us, every day, we need to be great! No one will hand us success, wishing won’t help, only action will.

If it is to be, it’s up to thee. You are responsible for your success.

Are you positive about that?

positive-attidtue

Since we’re very often surrounded with negativity, it’s easy to start your day in a bad mood. To paraphrase Earl Schoaff what most people do first thing in the morning is get the newspaper or watch the news on TV and feed all the negativity going on in the world directly into their minds.

I think it’s safe to say that after listening to stories about famine, wars, fatalities, divorce, crime, accidents, corruption, disasters and illnesses our mood can change quite drastically.

And that’s only in the morning. You may also encounter people throughout the day who don’t mind piling even more negativity on to you. “Did you hear about so and so?” “He got fired.” Or “Her husband left her.” Or “They had a terrible accident.”

All of that “bad” news can be pretty depressing and discouraging couldn’t it? Now, I’m not talking about lacking compassion when real tragedy strikes. That’s not what this is about. I’m talking about how easily your day can become one that’s filled with gossip or negativity, which will either sadden you, bring you down, burst your bubble, make you look bad or leave you feeling defeated.

Sanitation

In the computer field they have a phrase called “garbage in, garbage out.” It means that whatever you feed into the computer, is what will come back out. Since our brain is a computer, wouldn’t it make sense to be aware of what we feed into it? What are you feeding your computer?

I personally don’t read the paper or watch the news because what goes into my brain is critical to my happiness, health, well being and success. I also try to surround myself with positive people, places and things.

You should know that negative thinking is contrary to our birth right. We’re born thinking that there are no limits to what we can accomplish. When we were young if we wanted to be a fireman, the president or even a cowboy, we THOUGHT that we could do it. Okay, that’s mostly from the male perspective, but the point is that all of us used to think that we could do anything. The sky was the limit.

So what happened? Either we imposed new limits on ourselves, or we started to believe it when others told us what we could or could not do. As far as I’m concerned, I am as smart as my brother. I am thin enough, good looking enough and equal to or better than the rest! And you should feel the same! And it starts by removing negative thoughts, people and things.

Bug Repellant

Can we reverse this? Yes! You have control. It’s your life. Start off on a positive note and stay there. Do not let people who do not have your best interests at heart derail you. Those type of people simply need to keep you down so you can share their grief or disappointment, then you feel worse and they feel better. Again, I’m not talking about something truly tragic here, only the things that drain your energy and should be gone in 60 seconds.

Action Tasks

Here are a few ways to change the negative into positive:

Read something positive.  It can be the bible or a motivational story or quote.
Reflect on the things that you are grateful for.
Make no excuses, being accountable is empowering.
Avoid the pity party. You don’t have to engage in this behavior or activity.
Do something for someone else selflessly.
Dream again. Find those things that inspire you, the dream home, the new electronic gadget, whatever it is, get a picture of it and feel it as if it’s yours.
Give out positive energy. Encourage someone. Praise someone.
Smile.  This alone is powerful. If you try, you CAN find something to smile about. Think back on a euphoric moment so you can relive that moment of happiness.
Laugh. Still the best medicine.
Love. Hug someone. Tell someone that you love them.
Forgive. Truly forgive. Both yourself and others. This can remove a weight of negative emotions, thoughts and feelings.

You might not be able to reverse things overnight but if you start you will be amazed at what happens. You’ll attract not only positive people, but also positive results. And eventually, the negative people won’t like you as much because you’re no longer fueling their negativity. You’ll be blacklisted from the pity party and you’ll move onto the VIP party.

Is this easy? No, but neither is struggling, so you may as well choose the one that will have a greater return. You need to have the desire, the perseverance and the nerve to be a positive person. Be bold and stand out and nurture a positive attitude!

Your attitude can take you forward or your attitude can take you down. The choice is always yours! - Catherine Pulsifer
