Excerpt:JACELauren and I head down Pennsylvania Avenue making for a nearby gym with a boxing ring, trailed by a considerable crowd of onlookers, most of whom are Secret Service agents. Once inside and changed, I make my way into the ring, dressed in blue boxing shorts and a white sports bra. Roz helps me slip on the red, Everlast boxing gloves. These are my competition gloves I had sent over from Cracked. James has agreed to let Lauren and I fight without headgear. Otis helps Lauren with her gloves. Roz appointed himself my cornerman and cutman, as if I need either, and he insists I call him Mick. Whatever. I allow myself a quick glance around the gym. A nice crowd has assembled. I recognize many of the agents who are betting against me. Otis said he’d been approached by other agents about getting a piece of the action. I told him I was willing to put up to $15,000 on the line. Otis hit that ceiling in an hour. Apart from the agents, I see a number of staff I haven’t met. In the few days we’ve been here, I’m amazed how many people have heard about the two bad girls who are constantly at each other’s throats. James holds the ropes apart to allow me to squeeze through into the ring. He’s going to ref the fight, which will go on for three two-minute rounds.Lauren and I square off in the center of the ring, and James gives the signal for the first round to begin. She starts off fast, trying to bombard me with combinations, sending me on the defensive for most of the round. I dance back from her, blocking her punches and dodging away. She doesn’t manage to land much of anything on me, but I can’t land anything solid either. I think I see what her strategy is, but then I realize she fooled me, and Lauren slams her left glove into my mid-section, almost knocking the wind out of me. This is not Lauren. This is Clubber Lane. Her fist feels like a granite boulder. The round ends. I know she won round one with that punch. But I also hear a silent ka-ching, as I mentally pocket $500 from Agent Saunders.Roz hands me a bottle of water, which I greedily drink from, while trying to control my heavy, labored breathing. When round two starts, Lauren tries to go on the offensive again. She immediately attempts the same combination that worked before, when she just about emulsified my insides with her punch to my gut. But I’ve already seen this move and when she tries to land the body punch again, I lash out with a right uppercut that tags her on the chin, sending her reeling backwards into the ropes. I hear gasps from the crowd. Before she can recover, I begin to rain blows on her, causing her to cover up and then clutch at me. She’s rescued from me by the bell clang signaling the end of the round. I watch her retreat to her corner, a glazed look on her face. Score this round to me. The match will come down to round three. The final round starts out slow, with both of us dancing away from each other’s blows, our punches tentative. I don’t know what Lauren thinks she’s doing, but I want to land the knockout blow, so I’m waiting for Lauren to make the one big mistake that will enable my quicker hands to take her down. The problem is she has the best boxing form of anyone I’ve ever faced and there’s no room for error; one mistake and she’ll clean my clock—and vice versa. But the mistake never comes, so, frustrated, I stop dancing and move in on her. Lauren steps toward me and we both start swinging as fast and as hard we can. I manage to land a vicious right hook to her jaw followed by a wicked left jab to her forehead. This staggers her, but she steps closer to me and we stand toe-to-toe, hurling punches at each other non-stop. I drop any pretense of style and finesse. Lauren manages to get in a stinging blow to my mouth and I can taste my blood. Then she lands another crushing punch to my stomach, causing me to back up until I’m up against the ropes, but I’m not covering up. Lauren gets in another punch to the side of my head, but I tag her with a good right cross to the nose that staggers her and then I follow with a left to her jaw. Her knees are wobbly and I think that if I can land just one more shot, she’ll go down, but the round ends before I can deliver that one last blow. I let my gloves drop. I’m exhausted. I know my lip has been split open, and I feel my blood freely flowing down my chin. Lauren has her own river of blood to contend with, as her nose is oozing a steady stream of snot and gore.

Excerpt:He tugged off her shirt before he kissed along her shoulder, working closer to her throat, and slipped a hand beneath the thin material of her bra. The brush of his fingers over her nipple had her arching toward him. “Oh Logan…”The front door opened just then and her father stepped through, catching them in the middle of things and shattering the mood. Jumping off Logan, she grabbed her discarded shirt. Shit!“What the hell is going on?” Her father stalked into the house, his eyes wide with anger. “Who the hell are you?”“Logan? What’s going on?” The woman that Trish hadn’t noticed at first followed closely behind her father.“That’s your son?” Her father took a side glance at his new bride before quickly looking back at them.“Yes, Mr. Anthony. I’m Logan Carmichael.” He didn’t offer his hand, but he did stand up, placing himself between her and her father.“What the hell do you have your hands on my daughter for? She’s your stepsister!” Anger had his words echoing off the walls.“David…I’m sure there’s a logical reason.” Nancy laid her hand on his arm. “Right, Logan?”“Oh sure, Mom.”“What could that be? She tripped and landed on you with her shirt off?”“That’s enough, Dad.” Suddenly, everything that had been building up within her was ready to be let loose. “Logan and I dated years ago and things just happened.”“Just happened! He’s now your stepbrother. Things like that can’t just happen.”“Like how you killed Mom?” The words were out of her mouth before she had a moment to think things through.

Guest Post: Riders of the Lightning Storm by @JenniferMacaire @Evernightteen @bloggerbees

You want to write a novel. That’s not unusual. A lot of people love to write and many excel at it. I’d like to give you the best advice possible though before you begin, and this is it: finish what you start.
Yes, that’s it. Finish what you start. Carve it in stone or write it in indelible ink and paste it over your keyboard, but don’t forget it. It sounds so anodyne, so uncomplicated, and so easy. But it’s going to be the hardest part of writing a novel.
Starting a book is easy. Inspiration comes as quickly and easily as a breeze through an open window or a dream. Even characters are simple to create; after all, they are living in your head and you know them better than anyone. A plot is important and it’s as easy as a beginning, a middle and an end.
So, you ask, what is so hard about writing a novel?
I’ll tell you. Writing a novel is sitting down every single day and writing. It’s writing when you are not inspired. It’s writing when you have something else to do. It’s writing when there is a movie you want to see, a dog barking, the telephone ringing, and your kids clamouring for their dinner. It’s writing until you’ve attained your word count, and then wrote the last two words…‘The End’.
It still sounds deceptively easy. But how many would-be authors write twenty, thirty, even a hundred pages and then get stuck. “No, this isn’t going right.” They say. Or, “I can’t seem to get into the story anymore.” They decide to put it in a drawer and finish it later.
Later?
More likely they will have another inspiration and start writing a totally different book. They will invent newer, more interesting characters and start again. And then, after a few chapters, the same ennui will set in. The same doubts. The same urge to just stick the manuscript in a drawer and start anew.
Don’t.
Finish what you have started.
The best advice you can get is this: No matter what happens to the characters, plot, and conflict—keep writing. Finish that book! The first book a novelist pens is rarely a gem. It’s often full of too many ideas, too many plots and characters. The very best thing an aspiring author can do is to finish that first book…and put it in a drawer. Then, start another one. But never, ever, start a new one until you’ve finished writing your first book.
Finish that first book for several reasons.
One, it means you are an author. You have written a novel. No matter what kind of book, be it a masterpiece or a disaster, it is a novel and it is finished. You have done something many people set out to do and few accomplish, so give yourself a pat on the back. Two, it will give you the confidence you need to start another book and to finish that one too. Book two will be better, I promise. It will be easier to write. The words will flow effortlessly. The characters will stay in character. You will have freed yourself to write. So you want to write a novel? Go ahead, start one…but whatever you do, finish once you’ve started.

Excerpt:The Jeffries' had moved their herd to the south end of the lake. Today, the boys had started breaking in the two-year-olds, and Meagan decided before swimming she'd go have a look at their work. It was a ten-minute walk along the shoreline, and as she walked she gathered eggs from the many nests she found. She only took one egg from each nest, putting them carefully in her pouch after admiring their speckled amethyst coloring.Luke saw her coming and waved. He sat astride the lead mare and her presence calmed the young horses his brothers rode. They cantered slowly around a circle of bare earth worn in the grass. Luke led, with his brothers right behind him. Their mounts snorted loudly and swished their tails, unused to having riders on their backs. They cantered a while, slowed to a bouncy trot, and dropped to a walk. Skittishly, the younger horses tossed their heads and pranced sideways."Let's go faster!" cried Luke, urging his mare into a gallop. She pinned her ears back, as if annoyed to be acting the part of schoolmistress, but set off at a fast pace. The three boys galloped after Luke, sitting astride their horses with practiced ease.Meagan sat on a nearby log and watched. She admired the way the brothers rode. Everyone had a different style, but the Jeffries looked both athletic and graceful. In the distance, across the lake, she could see Carl walking toward their camp. He waved his hat in the air, and she waved back. Meagan rose and picked up the eggs. She should get back if she wanted to swim before dinner. Luke and his brothers wouldn't be finished for a while yet. She'd just finished adjusting the strap on her shoulder pouch when a clap of thunder made her jump. Frowning, she looked around. There were no storm clouds in sight. A faint sparkle caught Meagan's eye, and she stiffened. A mist curtain, no more than three feet wide, appeared in the middle of the plain. Her heart seemed to stop, then start again, pounding frantically. "R-r-raid . . . Raiders," she whispered. She had to warn Carl and the Jeffries brothers. She tried to shout, but her voice stuck in her throat. She couldn't say anything. She opened her mouth, but no sound came out at all. Panic-stricken, she screamed, and her voice shattered the air around her. She tried to call to Carl, to tell him to watch out, but all she could do was scream. A flock of birds rocketed out of the long grass, their wings whirring around her. She tried to stop, dragging air into her lungs and clapping her hands over her mouth, but she screamed again, and all of a sudden the words poured out. "Luke! Carl! Raiders! Raiders are coming! Get the horses! Get out of here!" She started running for her camp. The boys fought to control their young mounts as strange horses surged out of the mist curtain. Upon their backs, cloaked riders crouched low. They held long poles with lassos attached. Without pausing to look around, the Raiders galloped straight for Luke and his brothers.Shouting, Luke motioned at his brothers to save the herd. The untrained horses, frightened by the noise and sudden panic of their riders, took off at full gallop, clods of dirt and grass flying in the pursuing Raiders' faces.Meagan saw Carl running toward their herd. He leapt through the tall grass and whistled for his horse. She knew he had to get the lead mare out of the way. If he could catch Boo, then he could herd their horses across the plains and out of the Raiders' reach. The Raiders never let their mist curtain close behind them, so they could get back home. Because of this, the Raiders couldn't venture beyond a certain perimeter. If Carl could get their horses far enough away, they would be safe. Meagan held on to that thought as she ran, her breath coming in sharp gasps. Behind her, she heard hoof beats. She turned. Two Raiders were swooping down upon her.She uttered a frightened scream and dodged, flinging herself toward the lake. Perhaps she could swim away from them. But the Raiders, anticipating her move, rode to cut her off. She swerved again, her lungs burning and her legs aching as she ran. Then someone called her name, and she saw Luke galloping toward her, his hand outstretched."Jump on!" he shouted. His expression was grim."No!" Meagan screamed back at him. "Go away! They'll catch you!" Already the Raiders were closing in.Luke paid no attention. Kicking his mare, he leaned over and snagged Meagan's arm. She felt as if it had been yanked out of its socket as she was jerked off her feet. Instinctively, she swung her legs over the mare's back and grabbed Luke's waist. A second later a lasso zinged through the air, just missing her head.Luke had just turned the mare toward the lake to try to lose their pursuers, when another rope shot overhead and settled on the mare's neck. With a harsh cry, Luke pulled her back before she was knocked off her feet. The Raiders were too quick. They hauled back on the rope, sending the mare tumbling. Luke and Meagan fell heavily to the ground, and the last thing Meagan saw were the mare's kicking feet.#Note & Recipe: Herders travel light. Their staple diet is beans – “dried beans are easy to carry, easy to fix, and have lots of vitamins and iron”, as Herders like to say. When they get to their campsites, they usually put a handful of beans in a pot of water to soak, and then cook them over an open fire. Here is one of Meagan's favorite recipes:
Meagan's Bean Stew with Leftover BreadIngredients:1 1/3 cups dried pinto or cranberry beans2 tablespoons olive oil3 celery stalks, sliced2 carrots, sliced1 onion, chopped2 cloves garlic, minced or crushed1/2 teaspoon dried red chili flakes2 tomatoes, diced1 pound kale, trimmed and coarsely chopped2 cups vegetable stock (Herders carry lots of bullion cubes to help flavor their meals)6 cups water1 1/2 teaspoons sea salt, or to tastefresh ground black pepper3 or 4 slices of stale or lightly toasted Italian or French bread, cut into crouton-size piecesInstructions:Rinse the beans and soak overnight covered in several inches of cold water with a little lemon juice or vinegar added. Drain and rinse. Place the beans in a medium saucepan. Cover with several inches of fresh water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 1 hour or until the beans are tender but not falling apart. Drain and lightly mash some of the beans with a potato masher. Set aside.Heat a large saucepan or soup pot over medium heat. When hot, add the olive oil, wait a few moments, then swirl to coat the bottom of the pan. Toss in the celery, carrot, onion, garlic and chili flakes and cook, stirring, until the onion turns a light brown, about 10 to 12 minutes. Add the tomatoes and continue to cook until the tomatoes are slightly reduced, another 10 minutes. Now stir in the beans with the kale and add the vegetable stock and water. Bring to a slow boil, then reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and cook until the kale is tender, about 25 to 30 minutes.Remove from heat and season with salt and plenty of fresh ground black pepper. Serve hot in wide shallow bowls and scatter with pieces of stale or lightly toasted bread.~ Enjoy! ~

Lord Charles Avonlea has evaded marriage over the last year, but his mother is determined to find him a wife. Far from consenting to any of her choices, he sets his sights on the one woman unavailable to him, his best friend's younger sister. With no regard for the law or her impending nuptials, he is determined to make Lady Emily Thompson his bride. The only trouble is, he’s stumbled upon dangerous information and hopes he can get to her before it’s too late.Stunned and dismayed at discovering the arrangement between her mother and the Duke of Downsbury, Lady Emily Thompson searches for a way to break the marriage pact with the duke. She longs to be with the only man who indulges her curiosity, yet finds herself in the middle of a scandal that will crush her dreams forever. Will she find a way to get out of marrying the duke, or will she find herself in the same predicament as the previous duchess? Excerpt:Emily gently closed her chamber door and swept down the hall, pausing outside of his room. The glow of the fireplace danced across the floor under the door, but all was silent. Perhaps he was reading from the privacy of the curtained platform bed or standing in the window, basking in the view the west side of the manor offered. She quietly opened his door and closed it behind her. No one stirred, nor made a sound. She took a step forward, parting her lips to call for him. A soft moan caught her attention and uncertainty crept up her spine. She should not have proceeded, but went on to appease her curiosity. Stealing further into the room, she paused in the corner. She caught sight of his lordship through the break of the curtains. Charles’ eyes were closed, chest exposed as his hand moved beneath the sheet barely covering his waist. Lord, he’s a sight to watch, but what exactly is he doing?Emily moved closer, but could not make head or tails of his motions. That is, until he called out, “Emily.”He moaned, then kicked off his sheets.Good heavens, the sight of him was impressive. Dark, curly hair dusted his chest. His muscles so refined that the creases begged her to touch them. Dampness settled between her thighs again. What the hell is wrong with me? Did he just moan out my name? She could see clearly now as he stroked his manhood. Emily gasped and stepped back, bumping into a chair. Drats! Avonlea opened his eyes. She lost all sense of what she had stumbled upon. She should not have been there, no matter how glorious or how beautiful he looked with his eyes closed, or how impressive his body appeared. She would land straight in purgatory for this sin and many others, but she stood at the edge of the platform still. Charles reached for the sheet to cover himself, as he should, but Emily could not help but feel disappointed at the act of modesty. “You should not be here, young lady. What sort of devil are you, for sneaking upon a bachelor’s room as such?” About the Author:

EXCERPT
Callum Blake growled and grabbed his forearm. He opened his clenched fist as the nails on his hand morphed into long dark claws. He gritted his teeth and closed his eyes as he fought the urge to shift. He pounded the tree and glanced up at the night sky and prayed in agony to the wolf goddess. He pleaded for help. He’d take anything she had to offer if it would provide even the smallest amount of relief.Nothing. The pain continued. He shook his head and grimaced in an attempt to remove the fog that was starting to shroud his mind. He silently cried out to her again.
Why are you silent? You’re the reason I took this mission and now you’re allowing me to suffer? His frustration mingled with his physical pain, adding to his misery. The beast fought its way to the surface. He opened his mouth and howled. A mixture of a roar and a yell, it relieved some of the tension within him, but it did not drive away the urge to shift. Leaning against the tree, he dug his claws into the bark, burrowing deep grooves as he exerted his strength against the muscle contraction. His pulse pounded in his ears as sweat poured down on his face. Unlike his wolf self who resided peacefully inside of him, his lycan did not have the same kind of placating nature. It yielded only to the strongest of commands exerted to it from his mind. It was supposed to live in harmony just as his inner wolf, but it refused.
For wolf shifters, their human and wolf self were like two individuals abiding in one nature. One innately human, sharing some of the same abilities and desires as regular people only with keener senses and more powerful instincts. The other, their wolf side was wild and untamed. It acted on a gut response, using its innate sixth sense to interact with the world around it. The wolf freely gave into its passions, choosing strength and cunning over calculated reasoning.
The lycan, however, was a being whose nature lived far beyond that of the wolf. Not present in all wolf shifters, it was like a curse of their wolf self-causing them to revert to a primitive version of their wolf self. Acting on impulse and rage, the lycan did not use reason or soft emotions like joy, love, and happiness, it understood violence.

DEEP DREAM by Elodie Parkes ~ Hot off the HOT INK PRESS @ElodieParkes @HotInkBooks

Thank you for inviting me to your blog today to celebrate my new release with Hot Ink Press, erotic paranormal romance, 'Deep Dream.'
This story concept was originally formed for a proposed series. Now it has been completed revised, lengthened, and re-edited for Hot Ink Press.
Essentially a vampire erotic romance, it also has threads of magic, and taking place in New Orleans, it's set in a music club/rock club, the mysterious StarZ.
Ethan Ross, the vampire hero, has been in New Orleans since his girlfriend and sire, dumped him in 1922. He's used to the weird undercurrents of the city and now works in StarZ that caters to the supernatural folks. His band, Deep Dream, play there. He's tasked with taking care of the 'ordinary humans' that arrive in the club and he does this happily ...
With a broken heart to heal Ethan swore off love long ago ... that is until starry eyed Anna Prideaux wanders into his life. Then sparks start to fly ...

Read an excerpt
She watched him disappear into the gloom. Anna stood and scooped her phone from the counter. She glanced around to check who might be watching her. When it looked like no one was, she quickly followed Marcus. She quickened her pace as she lost sight of him in the swirling mist at the back of the club’s main room. Marcus disappeared.
When she reached where she’d last seen him a shiver spiked up her back. The mist was freezing cold, the air thick with potent. Anna turned away as a weird fear gripped her. She practically ran back to the bar, weaving through the groups of patrons, and muttering, “Sorry,” as she knocked into one, splashed the drink from the glass of another, until she stood in front of Ethan.
His gaze mesmerized her. She wasn’t even sure she actually heard his voice, but somehow he soothed her.
“Anna, it’s time you went home now. You want to go home. You have work to do transcribing the interview with the band. Everything’s fine.”
She smiled at him. “I’m off now. Thank you for answering my questions. Thank Marcus for me. He left.” She gestured toward where she’d run from. A flutter of fear rose in her stomach and then Ethan was leaning forward, his blue eyes capturing her so that she dreamily froze to soak up his low voiced words.
“Goodnight, Anna.”She left the club happily, a faraway feeling carrying her along ...©Elodie Parkes Hot Ink Press 2016

It's All About the Author with Charity West and her #newrelease The Boyfriend Deal @evernightteen

It’s All About the Author…
1) Please tell us 5 interesting facts about yourself that readers might not know about you …1. I’m addicted to white chocolate mochas from Starbucks and I’d drink one every day if my husband didn’t grumble about the cost.2. My favorite movie is Overboard with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. I watched it with my mother when I was little and I’ve been hooked ever since.3. I’m rough on electronics and I’ve been through four Kindles. My latest is only two months old so we’ll see how long it lasts.4. My favorite candy is an almond Hershey bar. I would happily eat one a day, if I thought my pants wouldn’t protest my waist expanding.5. I was nearly homeless two years ago. Our home was going through foreclosure and with two days left until we had to be out of our current home, we still hadn’t found a new place to live. I’ve never been so scared in my life.
2) What do you like to do in your spare time?Read! If I’m not writing, I’m usually reading. That’s not to say I never watch TV because I do, but I’m very selective about what I watch. If I’m taking a writing break, I’ve been known to read 3-4 books in one day.
3) Is there one book that you love to read over and over again? If so, what is it and what is it that keeps you coming back to it?Well, it’s not so much one book but a series. New Species by Laurann Dohner is probably my favorite book series. The men are alpha and sexy and don’t hesitate to go after what they want. The women are smart and curvy. The stories are so hot the pages steam, but it’s the storylines that draw me in.
4) How did you get started writing and have you always wanted to be an author? After reading my first romance novel, I knew that I wanted to create my own happily-ever-afters. It started with writing assignments in school and by high school I had a floppy disk (yes, I’m dating myself) full of partial stories. The Boyfriend Deal is my first published story, but I’m hoping there will be many more.
5) If you for some reason couldn’t be an author, what would your other choice be?Probably a psychiatrist. When I was in high school, my first job was working as a part-time office manager for a counseling center. I really enjoyed the work and the atmosphere, so I could easily see myself becoming a psychiatrist or counselor.
6) Did you like school? Were you a good student?I absolutely hated school, but I made A’s and B’s, except for AP Calculus. That class completely destroyed my GPA. It was my mother’s idea that I take it, and since she’s an engineer, she was determined I was going to excel at math like her. Little did she realize it was going to be my worst subject.
7) When you write, is there a specific way you have to write, ie: certain room, noise or quiet, computer or paper etc…I usually write in my living room with a movie on for background noise. Or if my kids are playing on the Xbox, then I’ll put on headphones and listen to my Amazon Music Player. I do most of my writing at night, except for weekends, because of all the distractions during the day. On weekends, there are distractions whether it’s day or night so I just try to tune everyone out and focus.
8) If you could write a collaboration with another author, do you have one in mind and what would you write?I’ve never really thought about a collaboration. I’m horrible about deadlines and following a schedule, and I can’t plot to save my life, so I’m not sure something like that would work for me. I’m a by-the-seat-of-my-pants type of writer and need the flexibility that writing solo gives me. Now I could see me working on a series with another author where we each wrote our own books but helped create the world together.
9) How do you come up with your story ideas? Sometimes they come to me in a dream, and sometimes I’m driving my kids to school when I’m slammed with a new idea. There might be a song on the radio and one word or sentence stands out and a new story starts to blossom in my mind.
10) Do titles stump you or do they come easy? When do you pick a title, before the story is written or when it’s done?I usually pick a title when I have a decent start on the story and know where it’s going. The Boyfriend Deal came to me in the first chapter, but sometimes it takes a little longer.
11) Do you keep a notebook near you for when new ideas pop into your head?I probably should, but I don’t. I’m on my laptop pretty much all day either working on a book, marketing, or talking with other authors, so it’s easy enough to pull up a Word doc and jot down a few notes. It’s when I’m out running errands that I end up repeating things in my mind all the way home so I don’t forget.
12) If you write a series, do you re-read your previous books before you begin the new one?The Boyfriend Deal is my first published book, but I think I would probably re-read the series or at least any notes I may have on it before starting the next book.
13) How does your family feel about your writing? My kids love telling people I’m an author, and my husband tries to give me time to write. Several members of my family will happily purchase any books I write, while others are more reserved. I have an aunt who is happy for me, but refuses to read anything I write because my stories usually have a few bad words thrown in.
Thanks for sharing “you as an author” with us ! We hope you’ll come back and visit again soon!

Excerpt: Seeing Hunter head my way, a determined, slightly psycho look in his eyes, made me panic. I did the only thing I could think to do. I grabbed the first boy I saw and kissed him like my life depended on it, but as my body pressed against my unsuspecting target and my lips crashed against his, three things became very apparent to me. One, the boy knew how to kiss; his lips were divine and the hands going around my waist weren’t so bad either. Two, I was slightly in over my head, as he pressed me back against my locker. And three … well, I was still reeling from one and two. Three would have to wait for later. “If you wanted me to kiss you, Red, all you had to do was say so.” My eyes popped open and I stared in open-mouthed shock at the boy who had just made me melt with his kiss. Tyler Robbins. The one boy I should avoid like the plague. The only boy who had the power to completely devastate me, rip out my heart and stomp on it, and do so without any true effort on his part. I’d had a major crush on him since pre-kindergarten. Perhaps crush was too tame a word. When you’ve obsessed over a boy since the age of four, it escalated things beyond crush level. He winked at me and moved along down the hall, as if the earth hadn’t just moved, as if lightning hadn’t just struck, as if … well, you get the point. He was everything I’d ever wanted, and the one thing I’d never have. Tyler flitted from one girl to another. He didn’t have a flavor of the month; he had a flavor of the day. Or maybe it was a flavor of the hour. Except for Alicia Thompson. She was his on again off again girlfriend for the last two years, and she was a total witch. The last time they’d broken up, she’d egged the car of his next conquest. It took me a moment to realize Hunter was standing beside me, looking both livid and hurt all at the same time, but really, the entire thing was his fault. If he hadn’t cheated on me, then turned stalker, my lips never would have touched Tyler’s. Then again, maybe I should be thanking him. Now I could cross off a major item on my wish list. I’d been dreaming of kissing Tyler Robbins since the first time I saw him, on my very first day of school. Of course, that was before he started crushing on the snotty girl in our class, then I just wanted to pelt him in the face with a mud pie at recess. “Why are you doing this, Hadley? Tyler Robbins? Don’t you know he’s going to use you and toss you aside like yesterday’s garbage?” “Yeah, because there’s no one around here who hasn’t already done that, right? In case you missed it, Hunter, we broke up. You have no say in who I do or do not kiss. If I want to make out with him in the janitor’s closet, that’s my business and not yours. And stop stalking me! I’m not taking you back. Not now, not ever.” I snatched the books out of my locker, slammed it shut, and took off down the hall. I could feel his gaze boring into my back, and I wasn’t not going to lie, it seriously creeped me out. But what could I possibly do about Hunter? My own family thought I should give him another chance; every girl in school was praying I wouldn’t, and no matter what I said to the boy, he wouldn’t take no for an answer. What I needed was a boyfriend. Someone who wouldn’t be intimidated by Hunter, who would stand up to him and tell him to back off and leave me the heck alone. What I needed was a jock, but no self-respecting jock was going to be seen with a band geek like me. And I wasn’t even in the marching band, the semi-cool band geeks because they kept the audience revved up during football games. I played the flute, but I wasn’t coordinated enough to walk and play at the same time. Not without landing on my face at any rate. I sat through first period in kind of a daze, not really hearing anything the teacher said. I managed to write down my assignment and shuffled toward the door when the bell rang. It seemed I wasn’t the only one in a daze and ready to leave Mr. Bertram’s math class because everyone bottlenecked at the doorway. As I was squeezing my way through, someone grabbed my arm and I found myself plastered against Tyler for the second time that morning. Startled, I looked up at him, wondering why his hands were on my waist, and more importantly, why was he looking at me like that? You know, in that you’re the only girl in the world kind of way. Not even Hunter had ever looked at me like that. He didn’t say anything, not at first. He just stood there smiling down at me. I took a moment to admire his perfectly gelled hair and—sniff—his heavenly scent. I had no idea what type of cologne he wore, but if I could wrap myself in that scent—preferably by way of his arms being around me—then I would die happy.
