How Living in Saudi Arabia Helped Me Navigate Covid-19– With Splashes of Joy! guest post from Doreen M. Cumberford

I‘m delighted to have Doreen Cumberford as a guest on the DZA blog today. There’s information at the end of the post about her new book, Life in the Camel Lane, but first…the most interesting post you’ll read all week….

My family and I lived in Saudi Arabia during the 9/11 disaster.  From the vantage point of Saudi, we looked back at the US with great concern and consternation.   The perspectives we were to learn and glean over the next nine years provided me with a clear way to react and con...

The Mindful Writer – Dinty W. Moore

When I invite authors to participate in Three Questions & a Cover, I’m as eager as anyone to read their answers. There is probably a writer somewhere who understands this crazy profession / lifestyle / obsession / madness. Most of us are as confused about it today as we were the first time we put a word on paper; we’re just confused about different things now.

And then I re-read Dinty W. Moore’s book The Mindful Writer and I get to his Four Noble Truths for Writers and I’m able to breathe. I...

Get a free ebook, no mask required

Five months ago we were all encouraged to stay home as much as possible. My first thought was Cool! I get a week off.

A month later I thought What a wonderful time to be an introvert! No one can nag me about staying home now.

Now that all my closets and books are organized, my writing projects are up-to-date, and I’ve learned to make pita bread, I find myself craving…more. A challenge. An obligation, even.

I’ve decided to act on an idea that pops up intermittently. I’ve decided to, yes,...

Writing Down the Rows

This guest post from Julie Herman originally appeared on my blog back in 2012. Julie is the author of the Three Dirty Women gardening mysteries, and she has lately expanded her literary gifts to include middle grade mysteries, beginning with Burned.

The previous article had a comment that got me to thinking. I do a lot of gardening. I do a fair bit of writing as well. (Three published mysteries featuring a trio of lady landscapers and a couple of gardeni...

Writers in the garden

There was a time when the little lady you see below would have sent me screaming. Fortunately Margaret Maron taught me to admire the Argiope, or ‘writing spider.’

Writing Spider

Yes, like Charlotte in Charlotte’s Web.  You can see how the string of Ms or Ws that she’s created look like writing.

This particular Charlotte has taken up residence in my garden, attaching one end of her web to my garden storage box and the other end to a sweet potato vine. As a matter of fact, there are two more ...

Junk food in my garden

This post was originally published in 2012.

Earlier this year I discovered that mice and voles had taken up residence in my garden. It was a smart move on their part — the chicken coop is right next door, so they could gorge on the seed I’d planted then curl up for the night in the coop.

They ate ALL of my peanuts, most of my green bean seeds, the potatoes, and they are probably responsible for the half-eaten strawberries, tomatoes, peppers, and so on.

I was happy when the snake moved in becau...

Medicine and Miracles in the High Desert review

We all think our own lives are normal until we move or are pushed past the boundaries of our comfort zone. Erica Elliott was barely out of her teens when the full realization of this hit her hard. Even though she was well-educated and well-traveled, it took living and working on the Navajo reservation to challenge her inherent assumptions and teach her the truth about cultural difference and connecting—truly connecting—with other humans.

Medicine and Miracles in the High Desert by Erica M. El...
