James Gunn Shares Behind the Scenes Look at SUPERMAN’s Mister Terrific

Soon, the world will meet a new Clark Kent in Superman. (Formerly titled Superman: Legacy). DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran are rebooting the most famous superhero in the world as they transition the franchise from the DCEU to the DCU. Who will play the Man of Steel on the big screen this time around? What kind of story will we see him in? And who will bring it to life? We’re keeping track of all these answers and more.

Recently, James Gunn hopped on social media to share a behind the scenes look at him with Mister Terrific.

Here’s everything we know about Superman so far.

TitleKrypto the superdog joins DCU supermanWarner Bros.

The DCU’s first official movie (though not its first official release) is now titled simply Superman. Of course, the movie began its life as Superman: Legacy. It will kick off the film side of what James Gunn has called the franchise’s first chapter, “Gods and Monsters.” He has also called this movie “the true beginning” of the DCU.

Superman‘s PlotAn illustrated Superman sits above the trees and looks over his shouldersDC Comics/Frank Quitely

While the film still has no official synopsis, Warner Bros. did provide a description of what we can expect from the story, which James Gunn says is not an origin tale.

Superman tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

Gunn announced the film with art from the cover of All-Star Superman by writer Grant Morrison and artist Frank Quitely. Whether or not that means the story is influenced, inspired by, or adapted from the 12-issue comic series in any way is unclear. What Gunn has said is the movie will focus on “an earlier part of Superman’s life,” where he is still old enough to already be working for the Daily Planet.

Recently, James Gunn gave us a new look at one of Superman‘s villains, Engineer. In the DCU, Engineer is played by María Gabriela de Faría. We don’t know too much about her role yet, but we know she is “sinister perfection.”

We also have our first look at David Corenswet as the DCU’s Superman.

We also have our first look at Nicholas Hoult’s Lux Luthor. The menacing villain looks to be in fine form as he scowls around our first glimpse of the Superman movie. Check him out above in all his in all his glory, and you can then take a look at the character in action in the trailer itself. (We break it down here)

David Corenswet will play Superman, while Rachel Brosnahan will play Lois Lane.

In addition, four more actors have joined the cast of Superman. Isabela Merced will play Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi will play Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion will play Green Lantern Guy Gardner, and Anthony Carrigan will play Metamorpho. María Gabriela de Faría will play the villain The Engineer in the movie. Also known as Angela Spica, the character has nanotechnology built into her body. Additionally, Sara Sampaio will play Eve Teschmacher, Skyler Gisondo will play Jimmy Olsen, and Wendell Pierce will play The Daily Planet boss Perry White. Saturday Night Live‘s Beck Bennett will play The Daily Planet‘s sports journalist Steve Lombard. James Gunn has also confirmed that Nicholas Hoult will play Lex Luthor.

James Gunn recently confirmed that one exciting canine character would join the world of the DCU’s Superman this summer. Gunn shared that Krypto the Superdog would be a fixture of the movie and that he would be a pup who is a “not-so-good-good-boy” inspired by Gunn’s own real-life dog, Ozu.

In full, Gunn notes:

Krypto arrives on screens in Superman this summer. Krypto was inspired by our dog Ozu, who we adopted shortly after I started writing Superman. Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs & never knew human beings, was problematic to say the least. He immediately came in & destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture – he even ate my laptop. It took a long time before he would even let us touch him. I remember thinking, “Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?” – and thus Krypto came into the script & changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life. What better time to debut the not-so-good-good-boy Krypto than #AdoptAShelterDog month.  Btw, Ozu today, is, fairly often, a very good boy.  #Superman

Gunn also recently confirmed the casting of Ma and Pa Kent on Threads. Pruitt Taylor Vince (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) will play Jonathan Kent, a.k.a. Pa Kent. Meanwhile, Neva Howell will play Martha Kent.

Behind the Scenes

James Gunn wrote the (definitely completed) script and is directing.

Recently, James Gunn hopped on social media to share a behind the scenes look at him with actor Skyler Gisondo, who will portray Superman’s best pal Jimmy Olsen. Gunn says Gisondo is “gonna knock you out of your socks” with this role.

SINNERS Will Get Limited IMAX Re-Release in Theaters Across North America

We aren’t even halfway through 2025 but I am pretty sure that Sinners will be one of the best films this year. Ryan Coolger’s masterful take on the vampire genre blends Black Southern culture, Hoodoo, and the exploration of ancestral ties and religion’s relationship with music is a sight to behold on the big screen. The film continues to create buzz among consumers and critics alike, and further cements Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan as one of the greatest creative duos in existence. Coogler crafted Sinners for an IMAX experience and many fans saw it on that really, really big screen. Now, Sinners will get a special IMAX run in 9 theaters across North America.

According to a press release, Sinners will play in these theaters from May 15 to May 21. Tickets are currently on sale, so you’ll want to snap them up now if you are interested. Here are the theaters that will show Sinners in IMAX 70mm for limited re-release screenings:

CityWalk Stadium 19 + Imax (Los Angeles)Irvine Spectrum and Imax (Irvine)Lincoln Square 13 + Imax (New York)Metreon 16 + Imax (San Francisco)Indiana State Museum (Indianapolis)Arizona Mills IMAX (Phoenix)Autonation Imax (Ft. Lauderdale)Webb Chapel Imax (Dallas)Colossus Imax (Toronto)

“Audiences have spoken and we listened. If ever a film needed to be experienced in this incredible larger-than-life format, it’s Sinners,” Warner Bros. Pictures President of Global Distribution Jeff Goldstein said in a press release. “Ryan has delivered a film that has been embraced by fans who appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into creating a film for this screen-filling format and we wanted to give everyone the opportunity to see it — or see it again — in 70mm IMAX.”

Limited cities means that “everyone” won’t get to see Sinners in IMAX, though. But perhaps there will be more widespread releases in the near future. Personally, I am ready to own the film when they drop physical releases. Gimme all the Steelbooks and such, y’all.

Freddie Prinze, Jr. Answers Big Questions About Ray in I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER

I Know What You Did Last Summer is set to heat up this summer with slasher gore. This sequel will bring back Ray Bronson and Julie James, played by Freddie Prinze, Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt, respectively. After lots of photos and teases, we got a trailer for I Know What You Did Last Summer and it reveals what we thought it would. In the vein of Scream (2022), Julie and Ray are OG survivors who try to help the unfortunate new generation of victims stay alive. Prinze, Jr. and the new film’s director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson spoke with Entertainment Weekly recently to dish on a few big things about the new I Know What You Did Last Summer film.

Julie and Ray’s “Deaths” in the Previous Film Are “Outside Canon” Freddie Prinze, Jr. Answers Big Questions About Ray in I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER_1Sony Pictures

For some reason, there were people who didn’t understand how Julie and Ray could be alive. The last time we saw them on screen in the final scene of I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, the killer appears to pull Julie under a bed while Ray is in the bathroom. I always assumed that this was a nightmare sequence to mess with the audience for one last scare. The third film in the franchise is a standalone sequel and this new film is a direct sequel to I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. So nothing in that third film counts, honestly. But, Robinson has a slightly different take on that ending scene.

“So the way that I’ve approached the franchise is that I feel like those final scenes in the first two movies live outside the cannon,” she said to EW, “because in the first movie she gets attacked through the shower, through the glass door, and in the second movie, she gets pulled under the bed. So they’re both alive and well, and what I will say is that we have continued the tradition in our film.”

Ray Is A Struggling Bar Owner in His Hometown and Apparently Not With Julie Anymore

There was always the assumption that Julie James and Ray Bronson would get married after the events of I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. However, it seems that even if they did, they are no longer together. In fact, they don’t even live in the same city. Ray is in their coastal hometown of Southport, NC, which we see in the trailer. But, we also see one of the new main characters travel to seek Julie’s help. A previous behind-the-scenes photo reveals that Julie is in Raleigh, NC and still uses her maiden last name James. It’s not clear if they are both still single or not but this could rekindle a previous romance. And, one of the newbies could easily be their daughter.

While Julie seems to be living well, Ray is not doing so great. He is a bar owner and trying his best to stay a float, which isn’t the life he dreamed for himself. He’s older, grumpier, and not dealing with his feelings, just like you’d expect.

“He loves his town and not everyone else does, in his view, and he’s a little grumpier with the way the world has treated him since [the 1997 Southport Massacre],” said Prinze, Jr. “So he has gone through a lot, and I don’t know if he’s dealt with it the way the modern man deals with stuff, you know what I mean? He’s a guy from the ’90s like myself, so I think he’s probably bottled up a lot more of those feelings we’ve talked about.”

We Will Learn Karla’s Fate in This I Know What You Did Last Summer Sequel

Fans are constantly asking about Brandy’s character Karla. She survived the second film but there’s no word on if Brandy will make an appearance in this sequel or not. However, Robinson does say we will find out what happened to Karla.

“Here’s what I feel like I can say without spoiling anything,” Robinson stated. “We do find out what happened to her. I’m a huge fan of this franchise, and I came at this as a huge fan of this franchise. So that’s all I’ll say.”

I Know What You Did Last Summer hits theaters on July 18.

Ghorman’s Plight on ANDOR Shows the Depths of the Empire’s Evil

Star Wars began by telling us the Empire is evil in A New Hope‘s opening scroll. An hour later we saw how true that was when Grand Moff Tarkin obliterated Alderaan, instantly murdering millions. But that was only possible because the Empire had secretly built the ultimate weapon of subjugation, the Death Star. How did they pull that off? It wasn’t the work of a few powerful men with mystic powers. Andor is showing how countless willing and eager supporters, each acting with total disregard for human life, made the Death Star possible in Star Wars‘ world. In Andor, it’s a nightmare playing out for all to see on Ghorman, with a tale that explores the true depths of the Empire’s evil.

An older man in a black vest at a table with others on AndorLucasfilm

The first arc of Andor‘s second season included one of the most terrifying sequences in Star Wars history. It didn’t involve lightsabers or blasters. It involved truly normal people planning a truly heinous act in the way others discuss where to get lunch. Director Orson Krennic called a highly classified, unofficial meeting of Imperial officers to discuss a potential problem. He claimed it was about the Emperor’s “Energy Initiative,” but we know Krennic is building the Death Star. For that, we learn on Andor, he needs a mineral that only Ghorman possesses, Kalkite. The issue is taking the Kalkite out of the ground might result in the planet’s total collapse.

The proud and ancient Ghormans won’t just give over their planet quietly, so Krennic called the Andor meeting to come up with a strategy to silence all resistance. The other Imperial officers knew, without being told and without objection, what that means. Nine cities with a combined 800,000 Ghormans will have to be dealt with. And they’ll be dealt with violently and permanently.

Krennic stands at the head of a long table with Imperial officers on AndorLucasfilm

Ghorman is no minor planet. It’s rich, powerful, and prestigious. If something happens to it, other worlds will notice and some will rise up against the Empire in response. So, on Andor, Krennic and his team of amoral lackeys began concocting a plan to make the potential genocide of Ghorman a positive. The Director has an outside PR firm ready to turn the rest of the galaxy against the smug Ghor. Meanwhile, Dedra Meero told Krennic they will need more than just marketing to make this work. They need to foster an incompetent rebellion on the planet so the Empire can then use rebel activity as justification for what the Empire is going to do anyway. They want to present tyranny as righteousness, all in the name of order.

It was a chilling sequence because of how easily a room full of people discussed annihilating an entire world. They schemed with the cold calculation of mechanics fixing a car. And in Andor season two’s second arc, we got to see how secret plans developed in shadowy rooms turn into the people of Ghorman’s actual oppression and real suffering.

Cassian and Ghor resistance fighters looking down a pathway on AndorLucasfilm

It’s not bad enough that the Empire is using tactics everyone on the planet can see, like imposing draconian laws in the name of “safety” and building an illegal armory while claiming it’s just an office building. Dedra is even using her own boyfriend, Syril Karn, to help the Empire wipe out the Ghor. She has him intentionally tricking the underground resistance into believing Syril is sympathetic to their cause. He’s the plant in a plan whose ingenuity is only matched by its unimaginable evilness. The Empire is so vile that it uses the inevitable rebellion it knew it would cause on Ghorman against itself on Andor. It is turning the very fight for freedom into a tool of oppression.

The wannabe Imperialist bootlicker thinks he’s trying to help the the Empire root out rebel activity in the galaxy at large. Syril doesn’t know what we do, that Partagaz and his own girlfriend are secretly using him to help annihilate Ghorman. They will destroy it the same way the Death Star will one day soon destroy Alderaan. Only, what is happening to Ghorman on Andor might be even crueler. Tarkan will give those living on Alderaan the mercy of a quick death. Krennic, Partagaz, and Meero are slowly suffocating Ghorman. And it’s using Ghorman’s bravest to choke the planet and everyone on it to death.

Ghorman’s Plight on ANDOR Shows the Depths of the Empire’s Evil_1Lucasfilm

Star Wars began its story by both telling and showing us what defined the Empire. But millions of voices suddenly crying out in terror is hard to process. Our brains are not built to understand tragedy of that magnitude. We didn’t know any of the people who died that day, either. Evil Emperors who rely on the Force are also not of this world, and that can make them feel distant.

But seeing a room full of evil people, nonchalantly and without an ounce of objection, plan a genocide? To then see their awful plan playing out in real time with real victims we get to meet and root for, people trying to do the right thing for the right reason? To see how terrible people will always begin with an advantage because good people can’t even comprehend the level of the wickedness they’re dealing with? That’s much easier to understand. That’s what makes the Andor Ghorman scenes harder to watch, because it’s all too human and true.

We know what awaits the Ghor. It doesn’t matter how hard they fight or who helps them. In a couple of years, the Death Star will become fully operational. The Empire is destined to get its Kalkite. But their sad story has great meaning beyond the galaxy far, far away. By showing us the exact ways that happened, by letting us see the execution of an awful crime that happened because so many worked to make it happen, Andor has shown something we’ve always known but never understood better. It is showing us not only the true depths of the Empire’s evil, but who made that possible.

Mikey Walsh is a staff writer at Nerdist who thinks Cassian was wrong to abandon Ghorman. You can follow him on Bluesky at @burgermike. And also anywhere someone is ranking the Targaryen kings.

Watch Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds Sing a Little DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE Song Together

Last summer, Deadpool & Wolverine ruled cinema screens. It heralded the long-awaited returns of both “the Merc with the Mouth.” and the mutant Logan after many years. And stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, pushed their blockbuster in as many creative ways as they possibly could. But their best promotional appearance for Deadpool & Wolverine was actually on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. The two actors decided to perform a little song, where the two throw friendly insults at each other. Both insults to themselves, and to their characters. You can watch Reynolds and Jackman’s one minute Deadpool & Wolverine song right here:

Jackman makes reference to starring in ten whole movies as Wolverine over twenty years, to which Reynolds retorts with an “Ok, Boomer” jab. Jackman is actually a Gen X-er, having been born in 1968, but Logan is way older than a Baby Boomer, so maybe we’ll give this one to Ryan Reynolds. When Jackman drops his X-Men credentials, Ryan Reynolds responds by saying “Yawn.” But good old Hugh reminds Ryan that Green Lantern was a big bomb. It sure seems like Ryan Reynolds will never stop self-flagellating over his attempt at playing DC Comics’ Emerald Gladiator. It is pretty funny when he does it though.

We expect both Jackman and Reynolds to return for either Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars. They have to show up in some capacity, right? Marvel still has to explain that scene Deadpool has with Thor that we saw on the monitors in the TVA. But despite its massive box office success, there has been no official announcement for a follow-up film to Deadpool & Wolverine. Maybe Marvel Studios is planning a Deadpool & Wolverine & Gambit movie adding Channing Tatum? That seems to be what most fans want. Now, just sit back and imagine the amount of busting each other’s balls we would get on that particular press tour.

Video Celebrates the 2005 Hype, Toys, and Fandom for REVENGE OF THE SITH

The re-release of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith blew away expectations, making tons of money at the box office. Almost no one saw it coming. No one, that is, except Star Wars fans who were kids in 2005. For that generation of fans, they often cite it as their favorite in the whole saga. Revenge of the Sith, at the time, was believed to be the end of the Star Wars films. At least according to George Lucas. So the hype going into it was massive. Now, YouTube channel YungJunko has uploaded a video exploring the hype, merchandise, and fan reaction to Revenge of the Sith back in 2005. You can watch this trip down memory lane right here:

This video has a ton of vintage footage that is sure to give several fans all the nostalgic feels. Not only is there footage of packed theaters opening night, but there are many old commercial clips for all the merchandise. There was a lot of merch. This was the era when 7-11 released their “Darth Dew Slurpee.” There were also Lava Berry Explosion Pop Tarts, inspired by the duel on Mustafar. You know, the one where a guy got his limbs chopped off and immolated. Yummy! And of course, there were the toys. Even the little Jedi kid who the stormtroopers killed (played by George Lucas’ son) got an action figure. It was a wild time.

Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) duel on Mustafar in Revenge of the Sith. Lucasfilm

In terms of hype and merchandise, nothing can really beat the original trilogy in terms of pop cultural hold. It was a true juggernaut. But Revenge of the Sith came out in an era where it had to compete with other fantasy/sci-fi franchises like Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Spider-Man, and more. The film still managed to grab a hold of the public imagination, and the public’s wallet, in a big way, nearly 30 years after A New Hope hit theaters. Take a bow, Mr. Lucas. No one did it quite like you.

ANDOR Season 2 Shows That Television Exists in the STAR WARS Universe

.cls-2{fill:#9d342c}

Is television a part of the Star Wars universe? For years, we would have said no. The only equivalent would be the HoloNet, which is a combination of the internet and the holographic technology we’ve seen since A New Hope. But in Andor season two, we find out that television does indeed exist in the galaxy far, far away. In fact, Bix Caleen (Adria Arjona) zones out in season two episode five, watching what we would qualify as a morning talk show, like The View or Good Morning America. And it’s definitely not a holographic projection like we usually see in Star Wars.

A vapid talk show as seen in season two of Andor.Lucasfilm

Bix is watching as two ladies vapidly dish about the latest celebrities and parties on Coruscant. Their looks reflect how the people in the Capital look in The Hunger Games franchise, which is probably intentional. They make it a point to say they “Don’t care about political parties, just parties.” Clearly, this is what we call “State TV,” a tool used in fascist societies to spoon-feed the masses with mindless entertainment and propaganda. But it’s still TV nevertheless.

Like most tech in the Star Wars universe, the television Bix watches is not exactly futuristic-looking. It looks like an old CRT tube TV, with low resolution. Your high-definition television in the real world looks better than the TV we see in Andor. This fits in with how George Lucas presented technology in his world since the beginning. There was faster-than-light travel, and space stations the size of planets. But the dials and knobs used in this were old school, almost what we’d call steampunk today. So old-looking television existing in this galaxy actually fits with Lucas’ original aesthetic for Star Wars.

ANDOR Season 2 Shows That Television Exists in the STAR WARS Universe_1Lucasfilm

In Skeleton Crew, we saw the character of Neel watching an alien circus holographic performance with his family. But this is not on a TV screen, and it’s the standard projected hologram, which we first saw with Princess Leia in A New Hope. We suppose that could be considered a TV show of sorts. Actually, it’s based on the real-world Star Wars Holiday Special, which aired way back in 1978. In The Clone Wars, we’d often see troopers listening to music with accompanying images on the HoloNet, but that was more akin to Armed Forces Radio. Andor is still the first time we’ve seen something approaching what we think of as television.

A TV talks show on Coruscant as seen in season 2 of Andor.Lucasfilm

So does Star Wars television have its own designation, or is it all just part of the greater HoloNet? We imagine it’s similar to how streaming content is viewed in the real world. You can watch the same content in multiple formats, like on your computer, your phone, or on your actual TV. Someone can watch “Good Morning Empire” on a little TV screen, or in holographic form. But we can’t help but wonder, if there are talk shows, what about other TV content? Is there a Star Wars galaxy equivalent for sitcoms, or for soap operas? Maybe future Star Wars content will give us “Everybody Loves Chewie” or “All My Younglings.” It’s only a matter of time before we see something like that.

Guy Ritchie Will Direct ROAD HOUSE 2, Jake Gyllenhaal Returning as Dalton

During his career Guy Ritchie has directed a fight scene or two….hundred. The man knows his way around a brawl! Now he’s ready to helm another film sure to deliver a whole lot of fisticuffs. He’s taking over directing duties from Doug Liman for Amazon MGM Studios’ Road House 2. But while things are changing behind the camera, the sequel will still feature the return of Jake Gyllenhaal’s Elwood Dalton.

Variety reports Ritchie (Sherlock Holmes, The Gentleman) has officially signed on to direct the followup to one of Prime Video’s biggest hits ever. He’s returning to Amazon MGM for his third film with the studio. He previously wrote and directed The Covenant. He also pulled double-duty his upcoming film In the Grey which still does not have an official release date.

Ritchie isn’t the only one with plenty of action movie experience joining the sequel. Will Beall (Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F) will pen the script. While no details about the story are known, the 2024 remake/reboot/reimagining ended with former UFC fighter Elwood Dalton leaving the bar in the Florida Keys for an unknown destination. He could end up anywhere… so long as that place has a bar that needs cleaning up.

While it’s unclear why Dalton’s next job will take him, it’s no surprise Liman won’t be back to continue telling the bouncer’s story. The director didn’t hide his unhappiness with Amazon’s decision to make the film a streaming only release. He was ultimately proven right about that strategy, as Road House became the streamer’s biggest hit ever. That’s why Amazon didn’t waste any time announcing a sequel.

The movie is also really good and a whole lot of fun! Like the original, Road House is the exact type of film that would have been an even better experience if you saw it in a packed theater. Will Amazon give viewers the chance to do that with Road House 2? We don’t know that either. We just know with Guy Ritchie’s experiences filming fights the film deserves a fighting chance to appear on big screens.

Rock Out With Powerline in This VR Concert Scene From A GOOFY MOVIE

There are some dreams that you feel like you’ll never fulfill. You probably won’t become a Power Ranger or hang out with the kids from The Midnight Society to tell spooky stories. And, if you’re a fan of A Goofy Movie, you probably won’t get to stay at the Neptune Inn because, well, it doesn’t exist. (Someone should totally build it, though.) But, you can get a chance to be on stage with Powerline in concert, thanks to this virtual reality version of A Goofy Movie’s classic concert scene.

Disney is celebrating 30 years (!!!) of the film by giving fans a chance to rock out with Goofy, Max, and Powerline’s whole crew on stage while he sings “I2I” in a VR concert. And yes, there’s an audience full of adoring fans cheering you on as you soak in all the sights, just like a pop star.

You can watch this video using a VR headset and simply move your head around to see it all or you can tilt your mobile device. It even works on a computer screen, with directional arrows to make it come to life. Now you just have to work on your dance moves and learn Goofy’s “perfect cast.”
