With STRANGE NEW WORLDS Ending, Its Showrunner Hints at a STAR TREK: TOS Reboot
Recently, Paramount+ announced that their hit series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds would end after a five-season run. They announced this news ahead of the third season premiere in July, which seemed baffling to fans. Even if they knew internally at Paramount the show would end at season five, why announce it nearly two years early? Well, at a recent appearance at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, Strange New Worlds showrunner Akiva Goldsman seemed to hint strongly that while Strange New Worlds might be ending, it could be leading to a sort of reboot of Star Trek: The Original Series. Here’s what Goldsman had to say, via TrekMovie:
Right now [the characters] are in mid-stage development. How do they become who they are? What happens to some of them? Those are questions that we knew we needed to answer and promised to answer. And so that’s our five-year plan. And then we run into TOS. [Switching to conspiratorial tone] But they’re not dying. And we have those sets…”

Time to put our Trekkie tin-foil hats on. First off, next year is the 60th anniversary of Star Trek. There’s no new movie on the horizon, at least not in time for next year. The Starfleet Academy series will likely premiere in 2026, but that doesn’t seem like something big enough for a milestone anniversary. However, announcing a revival/reboot/prequel to the original series that started it all? That will get a lot of attention. Strange New Worlds already has a lot of the TOS cast of characters introduced already. Spock, Kirk, Uhura, Scotty, Chapel, M’Benga are already in place. All they really need now is Bones and Sulu, as Chekov didn’t appear until TOS season 2.

And then, there’s the William Shatner of it all. Recently, the iconic original Captain Kirk actor said Paramount had approached him for something Star Trek-related. Yes, we know Kirk died in Star Trek: Generations, but Picard season 3 broadly hinted at a resurrection. What if it’s an elder Kirk in his twilight years, dictating his early adventures as Enterprise captain, with the younger Strange New Worlds cast in those roles? The return of Shatner in any capacity to Trek is headline-making. The original Star Trek was a five-year mission, but we only saw three years of it. A new reboot/prequel could chronicle those early adventures. As Goldsman said, they have all the existing sets and most of the characters already cast.
We have no idea if any of this will happen, but some of it at least seems likely. Most fans would prefer a full fifth season of Strange New Worlds, and then a sixth and seventh. But in the streaming era, five seasons seems like the max any series runs for. Streamers gain new subscribers based almost entirely on new projects, and not new seasons of longer-running shows. Long gone are the days when networks shelled out millions for ninth and tenth seasons of hits like Friends and The X-Files to retain viewers. Since a new iteration of classic Star Trek might bring more eyeballs to Paramount+ than season six of Strange New Worlds, don’t be surprised if our theories prove true.

Netflix Developing New LAND OF THE LOST Series
Long before Jurassic Park, Gen-X kids got their dinosaur fix with the Saturday morning live-action series Land of the Lost. The series, which ran three seasons from 1974 to 1976, and had an incredibly catchy theme song. A theme still living rent-free in the minds of a generation. The series about a father and his two kids who went through a portal and became trapped in a secret world, one populated by dinosaurs and many other bizarre creatures, like the lizard-like Sleestak. Now, Netflix and Legendary Television plan to revive Land of the Lost for a new generation, according to Deadline. There is no showrunner or writer attached yet.
The original Land of the Lost series was one of many shows produced by the iconic TV-producing siblings Sid and Marty Krofft. Among their other Saturday Morning live-action shows of the early ’70s were H.R. Pufnstuf, Electra Woman and Dyna Girl, Lidsville, and many others. But Land of the Lost became their breakout hit in many ways. It ran in syndication for years after the final episode aired. The show got a revival in the early 90s, and then, a live-action spoof film starring Will Ferrell in 2008. None of the latter two were big hits, especially in comparison to the original. But the concept is still full of potential.

This will be the second show featuring dinosaurs from Legendary Television, as they produce the Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Krofft brothers originally produced Land of the Lost long before CGI was a thing. So all the dinosaurs, like the T-rex “Grumpy,” came to life via stop motion. With today’s technology, Grumpy and all the other dinos can be truly terrifying. And we’d love to see if the Sleestacks with the extremely creepy sounds they make will traumatize a new generation of kids like it did for many of us olds.

DCU Batman Won’t Be a ‘Funny, Campy’ Version Says James Gunn, Calls Him ‘Biggest DCU Issue’
James Gunn’s new DCU will already have a metric ton of superheroes in it, going back 300 years. But the character status in the DCU everyone is dying to know about isn’t metahuman at all, it’s Batman. We know the Dark Knight exists already in the DCU, as we’ve seen Batman in silhouette in Creature Commandos. In a new interview, Gunn reiterated how important it is that the DCU Batman is developed correctly. Especially given the character’s importance not just to DC Studios, but to Warner Bros. as a whole. Here’s what he had to say on the subject of the DCU’s version of the Caped Crusader to Rolling Stone:
Batman’s my biggest issue in all of DC right now, personally. And it’s not — I’m not writing Batman, but I am working with the writer of Batman and trying to get it right, because he’s incredibly important to DC, as is Wonder Woman. So outside of the stuff that I’m doing in the projects that are actively going, our two priorities are finishing our Wonder Woman and our Batman script. Batman has to have a reason for existing, right? So Batman can’t just be ‘Oh, we’re making a Batman movie because Batman’s the biggest character in all of Warner Bros.,’ which he is. But because there’s a need for him in the DCU and a need that he’s not exactly the same as Matt [Reeves’] Batman. But yet he’s not a campy Batman. I’m not interested in that. I’m not interested in a funny, campy Batman, really. I think I have a way in, by the way. I think I really know what it’s — I just am dealing with the writer to make sure that we can make it a reality.

For anyone who thought that Gunn’s propensity for humor meant the DCU’s Batman was going to be a bulked-up version of Adam West’s campy portrayal, you can relax. That definitely doesn’t seem to be the case. All we know about the DCU Batman right now is that he will have a “Bat-family,” including several Robins. Gunn revealed this when he announced The Brave and the Bold in 2023. That right there will separate him from the Christian Bale, Ben Affleck, and Robert Pattinson iterations. But as years of animated Batman series have taught us, Batman working with partners doesn’t mean it has to be silly. As a lifelong comic book fan, who cites The Long Halloween and Court of Owls among his favorite Batman comics, we trust that Gunn fully gets the character. We say, “Let him cook.”

Cinnamon Toast Crunch Goes Cannibal in New Horror Ads
What’s the best horror franchise out there? Could it be Scream? Or Saw? Nah. Absolutely not. Because nothing out there holds a candle to Cinnamon Toast Crunch and its level of depravity. Yes, Cinnamon Toast Crunch has gotten itself in the horror business, and cannibalistic horror, no less. And it’s not even Halloween. In its latest series of ads, Cinnamon Toast Crunch features a deviously adorable piece of cereal that has developed a taste for its own kind. We cannot get over Cinnamon Toast Crunch, favorite breakfast food of children everywhere, going cannibal. It’s delicious.
Honestly, these Cinnamon Toast Crunch horror ads hit harder than we might have thought they would. A whole fridge full of Cinnamon Toast Crunch body parts to consume? Get out of here. You’ll have to see to believe. Check out the Cinnamon Toast Crunch Cannibal below.
Happily, if you eat Cinnamon Toast Crunch, you do not qualify as a cannibal or a horror monster of any kind. But the same cannot be said for this cereal stalker. The stop-motion ads are shot like mini thrillers, and honestly, very well done. They evoke a little Dexter, a little Hannibal, and a little American Psycho. All movies we love. Given the age we live in, a little dark humor from our breakfast seems to make a lot of sense. You can even catch little Easter eggs like a cookbook titled “Breakfast to Die For” on the shelf. And we love that all the stop-motion was done by animators and NOT by AI.
Brandon Tyrrell, senior marketing communications manager at General Mills, shares of the Cinnamon Toast Crunch horror movie vision, which targets Gen Z consumers. “These are people who still love the brand and have deep nostalgic ties to it, but they’re now older teens. They’re looking for stories and humor that match where they are in life — smarter, more layered, and a little more self-aware.”

Gen Z, from what we know, does have a strange sense of humor. And this evokes something in millennials, as well, a kind of nostalgia for breakfast cereal ads gone by, twisted up into something darker. And who doesn’t like a brand that will take a chance? We applaud Cinnamon Toast Crunch for its cannibalistic horror ads and sense of humor. It resonates with us, so something has gone right.

F1: THE MOVIE Deserves a Spot on the Podium with the Best Sports Movies Ever
I’ve been obsessed with sports movie my entire life. I love them and take them very seriously. That’s why I also hold them to a very high standard. So I promise I do not say this lightly: F1: The Movie is one of the best sports movies I have ever seen.Warner Bros.
F1: The Movie is like The Natural combined with Rush, the highest praise I could possibly give it. The movie stars Brad Pitt as over-the-hill Sonny Hayes. He was a Formula 1 prodigy who decades earlier walked away from the world’s greatest racing circuit after a brutal crash. Thirty years later, his old friend and former racing teammate, Javier Bardem’s Ruben Cervantes, comes calling for “the greatest that never was.” Sonny has been living as a talented, nomadic racer who refuses to join a team and lives in his van. Ruben turns to him as his desperate final attempt to save his Formula 1 team, Expensify APX. If Ruben can’t get a win in the final nine races of the season, he’s out.
In F1: The Movie, Ruben already has a number one driver, Damson Idris’ Joshua Pearce. He’s a talented young man more worried about his public image than being the best in the world, and he needs a little direction. APX also employs Formula 1’s only woman technical director, Kerry Condon’s Kate McKenna. Like everyone else, she’s out to prove she belongs, but it’s not clear the obstinate Sonny is the miracle they all need. He’s not ready to be a team player any more than Joshua is ready to learn from him.
Yes, F1: The Movie is exactly what it sounds like, a bunch of classic sports movie tropes on a race track. And it’s amazing from start to finish. The difference between “trite” and “trope” is often a fine one, but F1: The Movie doesn’t come close to ever feeling cliché. It all feels authentic and unpredictable. Despite hitting so many classic sports movie beats, at no point was I ever sure what was going to happen. Every race feels like anyone can win or lose it, even though the bouts are taking place in a scripted story. That’s also why no character feels safe at any point in the film. Formula 1 is impossibly fast and dangerous, and F1: The Movie fully captures that.
F1: The Movie is also laugh-out-loud funny at times, thanks to a crisp script where people talk and act like real people. Sonny is a wise and ingenuous pain in the ass who is wonderfully acerbic. His humor balances perfectly with the anger, intensity, and sadness that burdens so many characters in this movie. This is a wildly entertaining film that looks like it cost a billion dollars thanks to its incredible racing sequences, yet always feels grounded because of its characters. F1: The Movie is not “just” a sports movie. It’s a very human story surrounded by incredible spectacle, everything you’d want from a summer blockbuster.
The film also works so well because its two non-Oscar-winning stars, Idris and Condon, go toe-to-toe with Pitt and Bardem the entire time. Those two are both great and charismatic in all the ways you’d expect, especially Pitt, who is absolutely flawless as the very flawed Sonny. But the movie wouldn’t be as great if Idris and Condon weren’t equally phenomenal. It’s impossible to walk away from F1: The Movie without thinking that both should be huge stars themselves.

It’s also impossible to walk away without thinking how lucky we all are that Hans Zimmer exists at the same time we’re alive. F1: The Movie has an amazing score that elevates everything. It also features an incredible soundtrack with songs from some of the best bands in the world. F1: The Movie is so good and does such a good job earning everything it does that it uses a Queen song without feeling lazy. More than that, its use is perfect. I didn’t even think it was possible to use a Queen song like that anymore!
Before the movie started, I was a little worried about F1: The Movie‘s lengthy runtime of 156 minutes. That’s a lot of racing. But during the last 30, my heart was racing as hard as one of APX’s cars. And when it ended, I wanted them to restart it, so I didn’t have to leave the immersive world of F1. This movie makes you feel as though you’re really traveling the world with a real Formula 1 operation. (I’m not a racing fan, so I can’t attest to the accuracy of the movie. But seven-time champion and legend Lewis Hamilton is a producer on the film who also appears in it, so I wouldn’t worry about accuracy.)
I love sports movies, but usually they leave me feeling disappointed. Few modern entries in the genre are even good, let alone great. But I can’t wait to see F1: The Movie again on the biggest IMAX screen I can because it’s more than a great sports movie. It’s one of the best I’ve ever seen.

ELIO Isn’t One of Pixar’s Best But It’s Still a Good, Heartfelt Trip Through the Cosmos
Five minutes into Disney-Pixar’s Elio—a cosmic adventure about a lonely little boy who just wants to feel like he belongs—I wondered if the film would end up being one of the studio’s best. It opens with a classic, heart-wrenching Pixar backstory that totally worked. I was immediately invested in the main character emotionally. The movie also takes direct inspiration from Carl Sagan and mankind’s beautiful message of hope to the cosmos, the Voyager Golden Record. But if I held onto the hope I was going to see one of Pixar’s very best entries, I would have left disappointed. Fortunately I was able to appreciate Elio for what it is: a sweet, heartfelt movie that is always good but never great.Pixar
Elio‘s biggest problem is also its most inexplicable: its character designs (both human and alien alike) look like they’re from a movie Pixar made 15 years ago. And that movie had a small budget. That regressive, kid’s cartoon aesthetic is especially frustrating because the rest of Elio looks really good. That’s especially true in opening five minutes which introduces the Golden Record. But in the year 2025, a Pixar movie should not, in anyway, look like it came out in 2010.
The film’s runtime of one hour and 30 minutes is also both too long and too short. It’s way too slow getting to its actual plot and conflict, but once it does, Elio feels rushed. I wish the first 45 minutes were closer to 15/20 and the last 45 minutes (which are also the best) were closer to 90.
Elio also isn’t nearly as funny or whimsical as you would expect from a Pixar movie set in space. There’s some humor that definitely lands, like when the film becomes a horror parody. However, most of its humor is just clever or cute rather than legitimately funny. It’s cosmic settings and aliens also feel familiar and lack the kind of creative spark you’d expect from Pixar. The film’s titular young character meets plenty of aliens at Communiverse, the home of an interplanetary organization of ambassador. But while a few are very original and fun, a lot feel like trite. It’s not exactly a good thing the Communiverse and its inhabitants most reminded me of the Quantum Realm from Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. I like that movie more than most, but I expect Pixar to give me something I haven’t seen before.
There’s also a strange problem of the film not seeming to know how old Elio actually is. He’s apparently 11 or 12 because he’s in middle school, but he reads more as 7 or 8. At first it seems like it’s an intentional maturity issue, but when he meets his fellow kid and new alien friend Glordon Elio’s age issue seems even more glaring. It’s not a huge problem, but it is a strange one.

While those are the biggest reasons Elio isn’t great, there are still lots of reasons it’s really good. For one this film delivers on the kind of emotional heft you expect from Pixar. It’s not exactly unpredictable, but even when it goes exactly where you know it will the movie lands. One really wonderful scene is going to have lots of grownups claiming their allergies are acting up.
The cast is also really good. Zoe Saldaña is, not surprisingly, wonderful as his Aunt Olga. She’s the woman who put her grand plans on hold to raise her very strange, sad nephew. Young Remy Edgerly is truly delightful as Glordon, as his the film’s star Yonas Kibreab. “Earth’s leader” provides the exact kind of enthusiasm the film calls for. And he does so in two very different ways. And Brad Garrett gives my favorite performance as the evil Lord Grigon, Glordon’s conquering dad. He’s a very well-written, fascinating, layered character, and Garrett nails it.

The story itself, though feeling like it’s missing a few scenes that would give it even more depth, is also exciting and makes sense. It provides ample opportunity for Elio to have fun during its intergalactic mission. It’s a journey that proves far more dangerous than the little boy who long hoped to get abducted ever could have imagined.
I wish Elio had reached the greatness it teases at the start. At multiple points during the film I thought it might finally get there. But knowing it never does will you enjoy Elio for what it does accomplish. It’s a delightful, good little film full of lots of heart. And a night at the movies going on that kind of journey through the universe still sounds pretty great to me.

DC Announces First RED HOOD Ongoing Solo Series
Originally, Jason Todd was the “Replacement Robin,” taking over for Dick Grayson when he became Nightwing. Then, Jason became so hated, that fans literally voted for the Joker to kill him. But decades later he came back to life, becoming the vigilante Red Hood, and is now a fan-favorite. However, he has never had his own solo ongoing series, headlining only team books. Until now, that is. DC Comics has announced Red Hood, a new ongoing comic book series from writer Gretchen Felker-Martin (Manhunt) and artist Jeff Spokes (Jenny Sparks). The new series brings Jason Todd back to the streets, but not to Gotham City. Leaving Batman behind, Jason Todd now resides in the fictional DC city of New Angelique.
Here is the official synopsis for the series, as well as several pages and variant covers for Red Hood issue #1 down below in our gallery.

“Sweat, blood, and powder burns. Broken bones and mind control. A city rotted from the inside out,” said Felker-Martin. “Jason’s going through hell on the hunt for an enigmatic telepath, and he’s taking us with him. I’m thrilled to be helming this new run of Red Hood with Jeff Spokes.” Spokes added “Red Hood is gritty, bloody, sexy and stripped down. Gretchen’s writing is a well-crafted blend of superheroes and pulp noir, all with a New Orleans-flavored backdrop.”
“Red Hood is the in-continuity story Jason Todd fans have been waiting for,” according to DC editor Arianna Turturro. “It delivers high-stakes action, a gripping mystery, and raw, unapologetic storytelling. Every element of the book highlights the core aspects of Jason’s character—his difficulties with personal connections, his badass training, his brooding hotness, and his violent approach to heroism. Which means he’ll be killing people—a lot. Let me repeat myself: this is the story Jason Todd fans have been waiting for.”

In the new series, Jason will be tracking down a super-powered serial killer, and he’s going to have some help — Helena Bertinelli, the Huntress. Both of these outcast members of the Bat-family will join forces to try to save New Angelique, a city drowning in corruption. Red Hood #1 launches on digital platforms and in comic shops on September 10, 2025, and will be mature-rated (Ages 17+).

DC Studios Cancels First Movie: James Gunn Comments on SGT. ROCK Not Moving Forward
It was only recently that we first heard that DC Studios was planning a movie based on their World War II action hero, Sgt. Rock. First, former 007 Daniel Craig was rumored to play him, before Colin Farrell landed the role. Most excitingly, Queer and Challengers director Luca Guadagnino was going to be at the helm of Sgt. Rock. Now, that all seems to be over just as fast as it started. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. and DC Studios have canceled the Sgt. Rock movie just as it was going into pre-production in the U.K.Searchlight Pictures/DC Comics
Sgt. Rock was in the middle of the casting process when the hammer came down from the studio. The production was looking for actors who would play the men of Easy Company. This was Rock’s combat unit who battled the Nazi forces in Europe. Among the actors lined up for a role, probably as a member of Easy Company, was Challengers’ Mike Faist. DC Studios was also casting the part of a female member of the French Resistance. Apparently, Sgt. Rock isn’t totally dead, and the studio might revisit it next year. Our guess? Warner Bros. wants to see how Superman and Supergirl fare before greenlighting anything new from DC Studios.
James Gunn recently commented on the canceled DC movie, although he didn’t refer to Sgt. Rock by name. He noted to Variety that DC Studios recently “killed a project.” And further shared, “Everybody wanted to make the movie. It was greenlit, ready to go. The screenplay wasn’t ready. And I couldn’t do a movie where the screenplay’s not good. And we’ve been really lucky so far, because ‘Supergirl’s’ script was so fucking good off the bat. And then ‘Lanterns’ came in, and the script was so fucking good. ‘Clayface,’ same thing. So fucking good. So we have these scripts that we’ve been really lucky with or wise in our choices or whatever the combination is.”
The original report says that the script by Justin Kuritzkes would have focused the Sgt. Rock movie on Easy Company, along with the female French resistance fighter, trying to find the mythical Spear of Destiny before the Nazis do. In DC Comics lore, Hitler possessed the Spear of Destiny, which supposedly protected him from harm. This was DC’s in-canon reason why Doctor Fate and the Justice Society didn’t just swoop into Germany and take him out. The premise gives us real Indiana Jones vibes, and sounds like it would have been fun. Hopefully, DC Studios will be in a position to resurrect Luca Guadagnino’s Sgt. Rock movie someday.

WBD CEO David Zaslav’s Pay to Be ‘Substantially’ Reduced (Don’t Worry, He’s Still Got a Private Jet)
If you’ve been following along on Warner Bros. Discovery’s chaotic journey in recent years, it might feel like ever since David Zaslav became CEO in 2022, there has been one problem after another. Among other unpopular decisions, Zaslav has been behind the shift from HBO Max to Max (and now the shift back to HBO Max FROM Max), the shelving of Batgirl, the canceling of Coyote vs. ACME, the closing down of CartoonNetwork.com, and more. And throughout all of that, it seemed like there were no repercussions for questionable decision-making. But now, Zaslav is finally getting a pay cut. And even though this “substantial” reduction in compensation appears to come in response to the company now having TWO CEOs as it splits into two entities, we still feel it’s just desserts.
Of course, even on his worst pay day and after a pay cut/reduction, David Zaslav is making more than we could ever dream of. But still, it feels like a pay cut for a CEO is a rare thing. And we feel like it should be way more common. Here’s what we know.

Deadline reports that in an SEC filing, Warner Bros. Discovery reports revised pay packages for its new CEOs. And David Zaslav’s new agreement will “significantly reduce his target annual compensation, including lowering his annual cash compensation opportunity and reorienting the total pay mix toward long-term incentives.” The change will “foster a stronger alignment with stockholders and incentivize sustained, long-term value creation.”
Earlier this month, in a move that does seem more aligned with thoughts on poor performance, Warner Bros. Discovery shareholders voted against approving Zaslav’s 2024 compensation package of $51.9 million. This vote was more of an expression of disapproval than anything binding, but it seems it was heard.

So, where does this pay cut leave poor David Zaslav? Well, Variety shares that he now has a contract through December 2030 as head of the new Studios & Streaming company. His base pay salary remains $3 million a year. But his annual cash bonus opportunity has been drastically reduced to $6 million from $22 million. And his “actual payout [is] based on the achievement of performance goals.” As far as annual equity bonus target value, Zaslav drops from $23.5 million to $15.5 million during his first year receiving an equity grant from the company and then will shift to $7.5 million per year every year after.
But don’t worry, there are still millions of dollars in stock options and a “car allowance of $1,400 per month,” plus “125 hours of personal use per year” on private planes. Pay cut or not, Zaslav couldn’t very well fly with the populace, could he?

James Gunn Addresses Snyderverse Fans Hoping to Derail His SUPERMAN; Says “We Will Survive”
The rebirth of a new DCU is nearly upon us, with the upcoming release of James Gunn’s Superman. But even though it’s now been years since the previous Man of Steel Henry Cavill graced our screens, there are some die-hard DCEU Snyder-verse fans who just can’t let go. That’s putting it mildly. They are so dedicated to Zack Snyder’s now-defunct DCEU (aka, the Snyderverse) that they will do just about anything to kill any momentum Superman has. Presumably to reinstate their preferred version, as though that is likely ever to happen.
Via Variety, we’ve learned that James Gunn responded on Threads to a question about a segment of Snyder fans hoping to negatively impact the potential success of his Superman. Their Reddit manifesto to derail Superman’s potential success includes the usual posting spoilers on the internet early, and review bombing. And a few other very dumb, big waste of time things. Here’s what Gunn said on social media about all of this:
I think we will survive. I’m not sure the eight people that listen to that guy (I’m going to go out on a limb and guess it’s a guy) are going to impact the course of events.

At this point, the Snyderbros who refuse to see these characters in any other form have become just a vocal minority. But they often have a very loud bullhorn. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn elaborated further, saying “I don’t mind it. I think it’s good. I think you don’t wanna have everybody root for you.” He added “These people help us, because you don’t want everything to seem 100% positive.” Gunn is being far more diplomatic about some of these unhinged behaviors than we would be. But, he’s the co-head of the studio. He’s got to play it cool. Meanwhile, Superman is tracking for a huge opening weekend. So we’ll see how these keyboard warriors find a way to deal with that if it happens.
