MADAME WEB Joins the Live-Action Spider-Verse in First Trailer

You don’t need a crystal ball to know the Spider-Verse is about to get even bigger. You just need an internet connection. Sony Pictures has released the first teaser trailer for Madame Web starring Dakota Johnson. The standalone film takes place in a new world within the franchise’s multiverse, but she’s not the only Spidey figure who lives there. Or, rather, will live there. Maybe. We know, it’s confusing, but that’s what happens when powerful beings are all fighting to control a future only they can see and change.

Surprise Adam Driver! We’re in. It doesn’t hurt the film also stars Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, and Emma Roberts. But what exactly is going on in this intense trailer? And why is someone who looks like Spider-Man hunting down three young women who seem destined to be webbed-slingers themselves? Here’s the film’s official synopsis from Sony:

“Meanwhile, in another universe…” In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing’s most enigmatic heroines. The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures…if they can all survive a deadly present.

Sony also shared a featurette with Johnson discussing the character.

This is a big spotlight for a comic book character who has never really had a chance to shine like this. So while Cassandra Webb is now part of the Spider-verse, it makes sense her story takes place in its own universe. The movie can focus on her story for now rather than how she fits into another Spider-Man’s reality.

Dakota Johnson stands behind a giant spider web in Madame WebSony Pictures

Madame Web comes from director SJ Clarkson with a screenplay by Claire Parker and SJ Clarkson. It comes to theaters early next year, on February 14, 2024.

DUNGEONS & DRAGONS’ 24-Hour Streaming Channel Is Here

Now we know the nerds have truly inherited the Earth. We learned in May that Hasbro’s Entertainment One, or eOne, would launch a free 24-hour streaming channel dedicated solely to Dungeons & Dragons. That’s right, in addition to the current feature film Honor Among Thieves and an upcoming live-action series, the iconic RPG would stake a claim to its very own network. And now, the Dungeons & Dragons Adventures FAST channel (Free Ad Supported TV) is here. The network has launched on Amazon Freevee and Plex with three original series.

The logo for the upcoming Dugeons & Dragons FAST channel.Hasbro/Wizards of the Coast

The series include Faster, Purple Worm! Kill! Kill!, Encounter Party, and Heroes’ Feast. Faster, Purple Worm! Kill! Kill! will have two new episodes weekly on Thursdays and Saturdays at 9pm ET/PT. Encounter Party‘s new episodes will drop on Tuesdays and Fridays at 9pm ET/PT. And the cooking series Heroes’ Feast will air on Mondays and Wednesdays at 9pm ET/PT. Now that’s a lot of D&D!

Early reports about the channel said the classic 1980s Dungeons & Dragons Saturday morning cartoon show would be among the offerings. You didn’t think they’d forget that one, did you? The channel will also have plenty of third-party content from more internet creators and D&D influencers, including lots of live gameplay. Hey, if there are 50 or more golf channels, it’s high time someone rolled the d20 on a D&D channel.

Check Out Pokémon Concierge‘s Trailer

The first Pokémon Concierge trailer really sets the mood for the series we’ll see on Netflix. We learn that this series is set at a resort for Pokémon, and they come to visit as guests. Hopefully, the Poké R&R is enough to give Psyduck a break from its headache. The new Netflix show, Pokémon Concierge‘s trailer reveals, will tell the story of the resort’s concierge. It’s not always smooth sailing, but we feel like the stakes will be appropriately low. And at the end, we, Haru, the Pokémon’s concierge, and, of course, the Pokémon themselves will end up having a great time.

You can also enjoy the show’s teaser below.

The Netflix Pokémon Series’ Plot Synopsis

The Pokémon Concierge‘s trailer description also shares more about what we can expect. It notes:

Set at a resort for Pokémon on a southern island, this is the story of a new concierge named Haru, who gradually discovers herself as she and her fellow staff members scramble to attend to the various Pokémon guests.

We’ll get to see different Pokémon experience relaxing vacations. And honestly, what more could we ask from a show than that? In the trailer, we see Eevee, Pikachu, Dragonite, and many more of our favorite Pokemon friends. Of course, Psyduck seems like he’ll be the star of Pokémon Concerige, and we love that for him. Perhaps Ash and Pikachu might drop by for a well-deserved break after their final episodes as Pokémon‘s main heroes. Anything is possible.

LOKI and the Honest Beauty of a Bittersweet Ending

“I am Loki of Asgard, and I am burdened with glorious purpose.”

Loki‘s season two finale proved the Asgardian prince was right all along. Only the glorious purpose with which Loki believed himself burdened turned out to be very different from anything he’d imagined. The God of Mischief, who wanted nothing more than to be loved, who thought personal fulfillment could only be found in the admiration of adoring crowds, realized the only true purpose in life is loving others. Loki became the God of Stories, the being at the end of time who makes it possible for everyone, everywhere, to live their lives freely. It was the final chapter in a story that saw one of the MCU’s best, most interesting, most important characters, one who began his own tale as a selfish villain, become a selfless hero. But it wasn’t exactly a happy ending.

Loki only got everything he ever wanted and redeemed his soul with great personal sacrifice. To protect those he cares for most he must spend eternity apart from them. He sits on a throne no one will ever come before. He shoulders a burden the very multiverse he saved will never know about. It was a conclusion as heartbreaking as it was beautiful, tragic as it was hopeful, ironic as it was poetic. It was an honest, earned, emotional farewell in the way only bittersweet endings can be.

King Loki sits with the green strands of timelinesMarvel Studios

Loki spent his life projecting strength to hide the weakness that truly drove hm. He played the villain to exude toughness because he was always scared and insecure. He thought he needed to intimidate and awe others into submission if he was ever going to earn what he thought he wanted most of all: love and respect. His personal failings didn’t just lead to his own suffering, though. They led him to hurt so many. Loki turned his pain into more pain.

That Loki, with whom we spent 13 years, was long gone by the time he destroyed He Who Remains’ Temporal Loom. By then he’d finally learned to be honest with himself. That self-reflection allowed him to recognize what he actually wanted in life. He would never find meaning in the love of others, but rather in loving them. To show love to those he cared about most, though, he had to do the one thing he feared most. To fulfill his glorious purpose he had to accept being alone. And he has to do it without thanks. The infinite number of people who owe him their very existence don’t even know he’s out there, let alone what they owe him. And the handful of friends who do will never again see him. To give everything to everyone Loki had to give up everything.

Loki's Yggdrasil replaces the Temporal LoomMarvel Studios

Whether you always loved Loki or came to begrudgingly respect him for what he did, it was hard to see him sitting on his throne at the end of time and not feel conflicting emotions. He wasn’t weak or afraid. He’d grown as a person and became strong enough to do something amazing with his life. He did something that mattered, something that earned him true redemption, something that benefitted all of existence. What greater purpose could anyone have then Loki, protector of the Tree of Life? What would his father, mother, and brother think of him if they could see him now? He’d been so desperate to make them all proud and now he had. And yet, to accomplish everything he ever wanted he had to accept being alone, the one fate he feared.

It was an incredible ending for an incredible character and story, one that felt both earned and right. It’s why Loki’s final chapter stands alongside other great goodbyes in the MCU, the ones that didn’t ask us to only feel good or bad, but to feel everything. Tony Stark was once a war monger who wanted to build a suit of armor around the world. In the end he was that suit of armor, but he paid for it with his life. Just as Natasha Romanoff did. The Black Widow who wanted to erase the “red” in her ledger sacrificed herself to save her best friend and the whole universe. Like Loki their endings were not only fitting conclusions to their stories, they stand out because they forced us to accept that emotions that seem inherently at odds with one another are anything but.

A battered Tony Stark in his Iron Man suit snaps the Infinity Stones in Avengers: EndgameMarvel Studios

There is no good without bad, no hope with fear, no life without death. And we feel both good and bad more acutely when they come together because together they best resemble the conflict of being alive. None of us will ever get happy endings. One day we will all say goodbye to those we love. We might bid farewell first or be the ones left behind, but a parting is coming. Every hug, every “see you later,” every piece of key lime pie we share together could be our last. Remembering that is painful, but that pain it also reminds us to enjoy those moments and those people more. Stories that remind us of that force us embrace the most inescapable truth about existence, that to be alive and to feel is bittersweet.

Not every great ending is bittersweet. Neither is every bittersweet ending great. But when one is honest to the character and their arc, when it feels like the only ending they ever could have had, it lands an emotional blow no other conclusion can. Because a bittersweet ending is the only kind of ending that asks us to feel everything at once the way life itself does. How fitting the new God of Stories, the hero who saved everyone’s story, ended up telling one that did just that.

Taika Waititi Won’t Be Involved in Potential THOR 5

There’s been a lot of chatter about the state of the MCU lately. And with that, as ever, murmurs about bringing back the original Avengers, the heroes that made the franchise so popular to begin with, have risen to the surface. Of course, the best-positioned OG Avenger to return to the MCU is Chris Hemsworth’s Thor. After all, technically, Thor hasn’t left the MCU at all. In Thor: Love and Thunder, a.k.a. Thor 4, Thor even started a whole new storyline with his adopted daughter. And, of course, there’s the question of coming full circle to let Thor and Loki finally reunite and see the sun shine on them once more. But one person who’s unlikely to be involved should Thor 5 become an MCU reality is Taika Waititi.

In a recent interview, Taika Waititi shared that he doesn’t see Thor 5 as a current possibility for him, given everything he has on his plate. Here’s what Waititi shared.

Chris Hemsworth and Taika Waititi in black and white on the set of the Thor: Love and ThunderMarvel Studios

Speaking to Business Insider about Thor 5 and rumors of its development, Waititi offered, “I wouldn’t know if that’s accurate…I know that I won’t be involved. I’m going to concentrate on these other films that I’ve signed on for… So that’s six, seven years gone. I’d imagine another Thor would be a lot sooner than that. But I love Marvel, I love working with them. I love Chris [Hemsworth].”

An image from Thor Love and Thunder shows Natalie Portman as Jane Foster in her Mighty Thor costume and Chris Hemsworth in his Thor costumeMarvel Studios

But while it seems unlikely Waititi would return for Thor 5, don’t count him out for another MCU movie. You never know if Thor 6 will become a reality. He notes about the idea of Marvel hiring another director for the fifth Thor movie, “I would never feel like they are cheating on me… We’re in an open relationship, and it’s like if they want to see other people, I’m happy for that. I’d still get back into bed with them one day.” Fair enough. For the moment, regardless of Waititi’s schedule, there’s no Thor 5 slated to happen. Although should it happen without Waititi at the helm, we would feel curious to see where exactly it would go.

In addition to discussing Thor, Waititi also shared a little update about his Star Wars movie, though, noting that “It’s still marinating. I’ve been writing it.” Waititi also offered to ET, “At the moment, I’m still developing something with them. Like me, they have a lot of projects going on. I think they’re gonna push it until I finish these other projects. I’ve got about four other scripts that I’m trying to finish. My thing is, I want to take my time with that and get it right. I don’t want to rush this movie.”

MERRY LITTLE BATMAN Trailer: Bruce Wayne and His Son Save Christmas From Grinchy Joker

I always imagine the holiday season is especially tough on Bruce Wayne. That’s when the Penguin murdered Gotham’s Ice Princess. It’s also when the Joker ruined Christmas Eve by kidnapping a bunch of city officials. And you just know the “Jingle Bells, Batman Smells” song hurts his feelings even if he doesn’t want to admit it. Plus, he probably misses his parents. But there’s good news about this year’s celebration: he’s going to spend the special with both his son and his new beard. The bad news is they’ll be fighting some famous villains rather than opening presents. That will make for another tough holiday for Bruce, but the first trailer for Prime Video’s animated movie special Merry Little Batman is an early gift for all of us.

It truly is the most wonderful time of the year. Not because it’s the holiday season, but because that’s true anytime we get a new Batman special. This one is a lot more lighthearted than previous seasonal Dark Knight stories, though. This Merry Little Batman trailer promises a festive holiday movie that’s a straight-up family comedy with some famous rogues. There’s even a shout to Batman’s infamous nipple suit.

Here’s the Batman Christmas movie’s official synopsis from Prime Video:

This Christmas, Damian Wayne wants to be a superhero like his dad—the one and only Batman. When Damian is left home alone while Batman takes on Gotham’s worst supervillains on Christmas Eve, he stumbles upon a villainous plot to steal Christmas and leaps at the chance to save the day.

Mike Roth (Regular Show) directs with a script from Morgan Evans (Teen Titans Go!) and Jase Ricci (Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham). Merry Little Batman stars Luke Wilson, Yonas Kibreab, James Cromwell, and David Hornsby. This Batman movie will show up under our digital tree at Prime Video on December 8.

Hopefully, the rest of the month goes a lot better for Bruce Wayne. And we do mean that even if we always get a great Batman story when Christmas goes terribly wrong for him.

MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE Live-Action Movie Canceled at Netflix Could Move to Amazon

The Masters of the Universe live-action film about He-Man and his comrades will not happen at Netflix. According to Variety, the streaming service is no longer moving forward with the anticipated film. This news is quite shocking considering Netflix reportedly spending a whopping $30 million dollars on it already. We even got some casting news a while back about Kyle Allen taking on the role of He-Man, also known as Prince Adam. The power of nostalgia is strong but apparently not strong enough. Right now, we have no further details about exactly why Netflix canceled the Masters of the Universe movie. But it is the latest setback in a long line of attempts to bring this story to the big screen.

Angry Skeletor meme photo Masters of the Universe movie canceledMattel

For those who may only be vaguely familiar with the contents of this canceled film, Masters of the Universe is set on the magical planet Eternia and details the ongoing conflict between the muscular and blonde bob-wearing He-Man—better known as Prince Adam, the son of Eternia’s rulers—and his arch nemesis Skeletor, an evil sorcerer. Even those who don’t know this world have seen a Skeletor meme or two on social media. The 1980s animated series holds a special place in a lot of fans’ hearts who thought they would finally get their beloved characters in live-action. Netflix even brought a sequel animated series, Masters of the Universe: Revelation, to life in 2021.

Kyle Allen will be He-Man in new live-action Masters of the Universe movieHulu/Mattel

Now, with the Netflix deal canceled, Mattel is on the hunt for a new buyer for this Masters of the Universe live-action movie. Recent reports from Variety indicate that Amazon MGM Studios is seriously interested, but nothing is certain yet. So it will probably be a while before we hear any good news, if it ever comes at all. Hopefully, He-Man will have the power to rise to live-action and wield his sword in his own movie one day.

The SCOTT PILGRIM Anime Shares Trailers, Opening Sequence, and More

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World made an impression when it rocked into theaters in 2010. The story, adapted from Bryan Lee O’Malley’s comics about the titular Scott, came to life in stylized live-action with director Edgar Wright. Now a Netflix series will make the story even more visually splashy with a Scott Pilgrim anime. Titled Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, the eight-episode series goes back to the world of Scott Pilgrim, Ramona Flowers, indie rock sounds, and lots of fighting. The animated show even brings back the entire cast of the cult classic movie. Get your best looks yet at Scott Pilgrim Takes Off with its opening sequence, trailers, and more.

The Scott Pilgrim Series Gets an Anime Opening Credits Sequence

It wouldn’t be an anime series without an excellent opening credits sequence. And we love seeing Scott Pilgrim Takes Off follow this tradition. The Scott Pilgrim series’ opening credits sequence features custom animation from Science SARU and “an official theme song “bloom” by Japanese rock band, Necry Talkie.” It’s already stuck in our heads, and gets us excited for what the Scott Pilgrim anime has in store.

Get an even better look at what’s to come with the series’ official trailers.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off Shares Official Trailers

Doesn’t this trailer for the Scott Pilgrim anime make you feel like punching life in the face? In a good way, of course. We love seeing all these familiar characters a whole new way. Of course, it’s not all action. In its final trailer, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off promises us the love story of a generation. And we can really see it starting to take shape. Sparks are definitely flying, and love is “taking off.” Hey, sometimes one date is enough… especially in the world of anime.

Netflix partnered on Scott Pilgrim Takes Off with UCP. We don’t know yet how much of the anime will adapt what Scott Pilgrim vs. the World already did. However, Scott Pilgrim‘s creator Bryan Lee O’Malley is working as an executive producer and writer alongside BenDavid Grabinski, so we know it’s in good hands.

Lee O’Malley notes of the new anime series, “I don’t know who needs to hear this but… It’s not the books. I already wrote those and you can read them anytime. The show is its own new thing in many ways. Do NOT expect a word-for-word remake. Many fun surprises to come.” We do like the sound of that!

For now, Netflix has shared the following synopsis for the Scott Pilgrim anime series. It doesn’t really give us much new information, but it’s good to know the seven evil exes will still make their appearances. We certainly see them ready for battle in the latest trailer for this anime adaptation. Here’s what the streamer has to say about Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.

In SCOTT PILGRIM TAKES OFF, Scott Pilgrim meets the girl of his dreams, Ramona Flowers, and discovers he must defeat her seven evil exes in order to date her. But this time, things get even more complicated. Based on the graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley, SCOTT PILGRIM TAKES OFF revisits and reimagines the beloved cult classic, taking Ramona Flowers, her evil exes, Scott, and his friends off on a mysterious new action-packed journey to find love.

The Scott Pilgrim Takes Off cast includes Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Satya Bhabha, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Brie Larson, Alison Pill, Aubrey Plaza, Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzman, Johnny Simmons, Mark Webber, Mae Whitman, Julian Cihi, and Ellen Wong. Abel Gongora will direct the Scott Pilgrim anime, while Wright is one of the show’s executive producers. Here’s some of the best news: Anamanaguchi will provide original songs and work on the score with Joseph Trapanese.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off will arrive on Netflix on November 17, 2023.
