Iman Vellani Shares Her Ideas on How the MCU Can Get Its Mojo Back
I really enjoyed The Marvels, as did most fans who saw it. The problem for Disney is not enough people have seen it. The film’s box office is currently the lowest in franchise history. The lackluster response is part of a bigger problem for the MCU. It’s no longer the bulletproof entity it was just a few short years ago when Avengers: Endgame was a worldwide phenomenon. What can the MCU do to reach those lofty heights again? Ms. Marvel herself Iman Vellani has some ideas, and it’s hard to imagine anyone who loves the MCU will disagree with her.

Vellani recently spoke to The Direct’s Russ Milheim about the MCU’s current status in the world of pop culture. During their talk she offered suggestions on what the franchise can do to get back to its former heights. She started with talking about what Marvel Studios doesn’t have to do. She said it’s not “about just getting bigger and bigger and bigger.” Instead she thinks the focus should be “about making the audience care about their characters.” And Iman Vellani believes that will be easy since the last Phase of the MCU introduced “so many wonderful” new ones.
Of course, it’s hard to make us care about even great characters when the MCU doesn’t have them show up for years. Remember Shang-Chi? It’s not clear that Marvel does!

Vellani’s other big suggestion would solve that problem, too. Like many viewers, Vellani also thinks more team-ups will draw people back in. She offered a hypothetical Kamala Khan and Red Guardian combo as an example that would entice people. To that we say YES AND PLEASE. Considering her character also just put the Young Avengers in motion, she might soon get what we all hope to see.
Know what else would help the MCU get back its mojo? Putting Kamala Khan in more shows and movies. She was the best part of The Marvels and will be a big reason why the MCU will eventually recover from this dip.

Prime Video’s FALLOUT Series Needed The Ghoul ‘To Be Kind of Hot’
Video game fans have been safely enjoying the excitement/terror of a post-nuclear wasteland since 1997. That’s when Fallout and its ’50s-era Cold War aesthetic first came to stores. Since then countless sequels and spinoffs have turned the game into one of genre’s most successful franchises. Now Fallout is ready to conquer another medium entirely. It’s getting its very own show from Amazon. What kind of story can gamers expect from the adaptation? Who’s behind it and who will star on it? And when will we get a chance to see it?
Recently, we got our first good looks at the characters that will populate Prime Video’s Fallout. Additionally, the series’ creators delved deep into what we could expect from this new video game adaptation series. Speaking to Vanity Fair, they revealed more about the world and story of the Fallout show.

Of special interest to many fans out there since the release of Fallout‘s first-look images is the character of the Ghoul. The Vanity Fair article shares, “The Ghoul is a gruesomely scarred roughrider who has a code of honor, but also a ruthless streak. He is the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly all rolled into one. He’s also quite a survivor—having existed for hundreds of years. The show occasionally flashes back to the human being he once was, a father and husband named Cooper Howard, before the nuclear holocaust turned the world into a cinder and transformed him into an undead, noseless sharp-shooting fiend.”
Walton Goggins plays The Ghoul, a seemingly immortal gunslinger who has been unnaturally preserved by radiation poisoning. All three characters are in pursuit of an artifact that could change the balance of power in the series.

Show creator Jonathan Nolan notes, “He becomes our guide and our protagonist in that [older] world, even as we understand him to be the antagonist at the end of the world.” But, of course, The Ghoul won’t look as ghoulish as he does in the games. Prosthetics designer Vincent Van Dyke shares, “I need to be able to see Walton and his performance, he needs to look like a Ghoul from the game, and he needs to be kind of hot.” We say, mission accomplished.

Fallout, an original series, coming to Prime Video in 2024 pic.twitter.com/tlHh2WutF4
Of course, while the series will sometimes depart from the Fallout games in certain ways, it will also add canonical lore to them. Fallout‘s “Vault Boy” iconography, for instance, will appear in the Prime Video series, but we’ll learn even more about this aspect of the world. Vanity Fair reveals, “Vault Boy not only appears in the show, but the imagery even gets an origin story (which we won’t spoil here).” Whatever it is, it’s approved by Todd Howard, who directed Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 and is an executive producer at Bethesda Game Studios, which develops the Fallout games. He notes, “That was something that they came up with that’s just really smart.” We’ll have to wait and see what the Vault Boy origin story entails, but we definitely feel excited for more of these kinds of inter-genre collaborations.
Here’s everything we know about Prime Video’s Fallout series so far.
TitlePrime Video’s adaptation will share the same name as the original game, Fallout.
Fallout‘s Plot
Prime Video has released an official synopsis for the show, setting us up for what’s to come. It reveals, “Based on one of the greatest video game series of all time, Fallout is the story of haves and have-nots in a world in which there’s almost nothing left to have. 200 years after the apocalypse, the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters are forced to return to the irradiated hellscape their ancestors left behind — and are shocked to discover an incredibly complex, gleefully weird, and highly violent universe waiting for them.“
Additionally, we know that the series is “set in the future post-apocalyptic Los Angeles.” It will also tell an “original story based on Fallout that will be part of the canon of the games.”

The first look at the show featured a glimpse at the franchise’s all-new Vault 33. And more recent looks have revealed the main characters of the series including Walton Goggins’ The Ghoul, Ella Purnell’s Lucy, Aaron Moten’s Maximus, and Kyle MacLachlan’s Overseer Hank.

Everything We Know About DOCTOR WHO Season 1 (No, It’s Not Season 14)
Sixty years after its TV debut, Doctor Who is still going strong and heading into yet another era. The show’s Christmas 2023 special will be the first adventure for Ncuti Gatwa, who will portray the Fifteenth Doctor. Then, he will take over the TARDIS with Russell T Davies leading the way once again as a showrunner in the near future. This era doesn’t have an official name yet—we are calling it the Bad Wolf era for now—but Davies is setting it apart from the modern era’s 13 seasons by dubbing it season one. (It will not reboot nor ignore previous events.) What can we expect from this fresh slate of stories across time and space? Here’s what we know about Doctor Who season one, which is not season 14 after all.

Doctor Who always teeters between a season-long arc and weekly adventures. Who knows what will happen in Ncuti Gatwa’s first season as the Doctor?! We know there will be lots of villains, time-traveling, and tough decisions made by The Doctor. This season will have eight episodes and, for now, the titles are unknown. Right now, the main focus is on the 60th anniversary specials with Fourteen and Donna Noble.
We do know that the Christmas special—which technically counts as a part of season one—is called “The Church on Ruby Road.” There’s not much of a synopsis for this story but we are excited to see it anyway.
As Ncuti Gatwa takes charge of the TARDIS in this epic Christmas special, he soon encounters Ruby Sunday as they embark on their first adventure together.
We haven’t see substantial footage yet but we do have these dreamy photos of Fifteen and Ruby Sunday together.

As previously stated, Russell T Davies is back as the showrunner for Doctor Who. The list of directors include Dylan Holmes Williams, Mark Tonderai, Julie Anne Robinson, Ben Chessell, and Jamie Donoghue. Composer Murray Gold also returns to the show as a composer. Bad Wolf Studios (named after the Rose/Nine story arc) is now a co-producer of the series. Doctor Who season one wrapped filming in July 2023 and is already working on season two.
Doctor Who Season One’s Cast
Millie Gibson will co-star alongside Gatwa’s Doctor as Ruby Sunday. It will be exciting to see their relationship unfold because they make quite the stylish pair. There’s a
Bonnie Langford will reprise her role as Sixth/Seventh Doctor companion Mel Bush and Jemma Redgrave is coming back as UNIT boss Kate Stewart. There are quite a few new faces coming to Doctor Who, including Lenny Rush as Morris, Aneurin Barnard as Roger ap Gwilliam, and Indira Varma as the Duchess. Jonathan Groff, Jinx Monsoon, Anita Dobson, and Michelle Greenridge are also joining the cast in roles that have yet to be fully defined. Monsoon will portray “the Doctor’s most powerful enemy yet,” while Groff will appear in a historical episode.
Doctor Who Season One’s Release Date
Doctor Who season one will hit BBC and Disney+ sometime in 2024. The Christmas special will air on Christmas Day 2023.

THE BOYS: MEXICO Spinoff Is in Development
The world of The Boys continues to expand. After the first live-action spinoff series Gen V arrived to much fan and critical acclaim, now yet another spinoff is on the way from Amazon. Only this will be a Spanish language series, set in Mexico City. According to Deadline, The Boys: Mexico will be written by Blue Beetle’s Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, and produced by Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal, who may both take on acting roles in the series. Although it seems like both roles would be minor ones. Flagship series creators Eric Kripke, Seth Rogen, and Evan Goldberg will executive produce for Sony/Prime Video.

So what would The Boys: Mexico even be about? Right now, we don’t have details. We’re not even sure that title is sticking. The name “The Boys” is about the underground group trying to bring down Vought and The Seven. Unless Mexico has its own set of Vought heroes and its own underground group of “boys,” would that title even make sense? So much of the adaptation of the Garth Ennis comic book series parodies famous tropes from Marvel and DC Comics. But both universes have superhero groups all over the world. Groups like DC’s Global Guardians and Marvel’s Canadian heroes, Alpha Flight. We may see a more unhinged version of this concept for this new show.
Gen V tied directly into the events of the previous season of The Boys, even though it was very much its own show. We even had an appearance by Homelander himself at the end. It will be interesting to see how many of the cast of the main series will appear, as they will shoot in Latin America. The show is only in development as of right now, and has not landed a greenlight yet. But given how hugely popular The Boys is, we expect this one to go through.

The Nicole Kidman ad first appeared in September 2021. The theater chain intended to excite audiences about the moviegoing experience. This was in the wake of most theaters shutting down for a year during the height of the pandemic. AMC only meant for the ad to run for one year. But it became so iconic (and parodied online) that it’s still running today, over two years later. At one point, AMC trimmed the ad down, removing Kidman’s “heartbreak” line. Yet fans demanded that they restore the “Kidman cut,” and it was. As this new Nicole Kidman/AMC-inspired backpack proves, you just can’t deny the power of a glittery pinstripe suit.

We Take a Closer Look at DISNEY LORCANA’s ILLUMINEER’S TROVE and DISNEY100 EDITION
Disney Lorcana’s second set, Rise of the Floodborn, has been out in the wild for almost two weeks now. The starter decks we reviewed brought depth to the game. Now that I’ve purchased boosters and built a new deck, I’m putting the bounce mechanics that shined the Amethyst and Steel starter deck to use. With the release of new Lorcana decks and booster packs comes additional products from Ravensburger. They sent Nerdist a copy of the Rise of the Floodborn: Illumineer’s Trove and the Disney Lorcana: Disney100 Edition for review. The Illumineer’s Trove shines, but the Disney100 Edition could use a little more oomph.
Rise of the Floodborn: Illumineer’s Trove
The Illumineer’s Trove, which was also available for The First Chapter, is now themed for Rise of the Floodborn. It comes with a collection storage box, two deck storage boxes, eight booster packs, 15 damage tokens, and a player’s guide. The MSRP for the Illumineer’s Trove is $49.99. Eight booster packs alone have a MSRP of $47.92, so it’s already a pretty good value just for the boosters.
While the damage tokens are only slightly nicer than the starter deck ones and the two deck storage boxes are flimsy and not super functional, the collection storage box and player’s guide more than make up for it. The collection storage box is sturdy and with plenty of room to hold your extra cards. It comes with dividers help you keep things straight. The player’s guide is full of Disney Lorcana lore and includes the card catalog so you can mark which cards you have. It also highlights some of the Rise of the Floodborn cards’ abilities. I use the Lorcana app to inventory my collection, but it’s incredibly satisfying to check boxes and mark the cards I have. If they sold a book like this separately for each set, I would absolutely collect them all.
Disney Lorcana: Disney100 Edition
This special edition celebrates Disney’s 100th anniversary. It comes with six cards from The First Chapter and Rise of the Floodborn that feature alternate artwork from Disney animators. The art has a snazzy finish and features the animator’s signature. Additionally, the set has four Rise of the Floodborn booster packs. MSRP for Disney Lorcana: Disney100 Edition is $49.99.
The artwork is flawless. If you’re a Disney animation nerd, having unique Genie art signed by Eric Goldberg is pretty special. All the art is gorgeous and the satin holographic foil finish adds a nice sparkle. I really appreciate that the artwork is the unique part, not the card’s abilities or other stats. The cards include:
Mickey Mouse – Friendly Face – Mark HennElsa – Gloves Off – Brittney LeeGenie – Powers Unleashed – Eric GoldbergStitch – Abomination – Alex KupershmidtMaleficent – Uninvited – Lorelay BovéMaui – Demigod – Bill SchwabDisney Lorcana: Disney100 Edition‘s packaging and presentation, however, aren’t as premium as I would hope for an item designed for collectors. The box is far too large for four booster packs and the bundle of Disney cards. I actually thought I received an empty box at first, but the cards are sealed in the bottom. That part is good; it prevents them from shaking around in the box. But the special Disney animator cards come wrapped in a somewhat flimsy wax paper-like sealed package. As a result of this packaging, all of the special cards have a noticeable curve. I can probably flatten them with heavy books on top, but I find it weird that the booster pack cards are in better shape than the Disney animator cards.
Both the Illumineer’s Trove and Disney100 Edition have been available at local game stores since November 17, though stock has fluctuated. They’ll both be available at mass market retailers on December 1.

Live-Action NARUTO Movie Shows Signs of Life, Finds Its Writer
It’s the age of the adaptation. And one particular live-action anime/manga adaptation has been in the zeitgeist for quite a while. We first heard reports of a live-action Naruto movie in 2015. At the time, Lionsgate was in negotiations for the film rights to the franchise. And it was reported that Michael Gracey would helm the live-action Naruto movie, acting as its director. But since that exciting announcement, very little progress has happened with this film. But, here we are, over eight years later, and finally, it looks like momentum is picking up for the Naruto live-action movie. Most recently, we learned the film officially has a writer. Here’s what we know about this adaptation so far.
The Live-Action Naruto Movie Gets an Update
In its “10 Screenwriters to Watch for 2023” article, Variety highlighted Tasha Huo, who wrote another anticipated upcoming movie, Red Sonja. The profile shares, “After developing scripts for Red Sonja, Naruto and an animated version of Tomb Raider, Huo says she considers it a fan’s dream come true to adapt beloved properties.” And the publication additionally notes, “Next up for the writer is Naruto, a feature adaptation of the iconic anime for Lionsgate.”
Obviously, this doesn’t give us much information about the Naruto live-action movie. But, it does seem to indicate that progress on the film will happen soon. And, after so long without any news at all, it is good to hear the Naruto live-action film is still in development.
What Else Do We Know About This Anime/Manga Adaptation?
The article makes no mention of whether Michael Gracey is still on tap to direct the movie. The last we heard from him, via IGN, was in 2018. Gracey gave an update on the progress of the Naruto live-action movie where he shared, “So many Hollywood adaptations of really popular manga series just don’t get it right, and for me, what was really important was that if I was gonna do Naruto, I wanted to actually work with [Naruto creator Masashi] Kishimoto and get a script to a stage where he would look at it and be excited about realizing it… Because no one knows the world better than the person who created it.” That sounds like a promising perspective, in any case. So we hope the movie keeps it regardless of who is involved behind the scenes.
Of course, it is much too early for any casting news around the live-action Naruto. But it’s not too early for fans to get their dream casting lists together. Hopefully, we’ll get to hear more about this adaptation soon.

FALLOUT First Look Images Show Power Armor, the Ghoul, and More
It’s getting closer to the time to come out of the vault. Prime Video’s TV series adaptation of Fallout will premiere next year, bringing the post-nuclear wasteland of the popular video game to television. The series from executive producers Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy and Kilter Films will tell a story set hundreds of years after the apocalypse. Those who weathered the storm in fallout shelters are returning to the world. And that means, things are going to get interesting. The first images from the Fallout TV series show the stark difference between the Vault Dwellers and those on the outside. We see Walton Goggins’ The Ghoul, Kyle MacLachlan’s Overseer Hank, power armor suits, and more.

We would not want to meet The Ghoul. Goggins’ character “survives the wasteland as a Bounty Hunter. He is pragmatic, ruthless, and hides a mysterious past.” In the game, ghouls are around the wasteland. Intense radiation has transformed their skin and given them longer lifespans—all at a cost.
The world of Fallout is not a gentle one. As the series synopsis states:
Based on one of the greatest video game series of all time, Fallout is the story of haves and have-nots in a world in which there’s almost nothing left to have. 200 years after the apocalypse, the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters are forced to return to the irradiated hellscape their ancestors left behind — and are shocked to discover an incredibly complex, gleefully weird and highly violent universe waiting for them.
Additional first-look photos show some of that world, revealing Ella Purnell’s Lucy, Aaron Moten’s Maximus, and MacLachlan’s Hank.

We still have a while to wait until Fallout‘s release on April 12, 2024, but these images are helping to get us through. Here’s hoping we get a trailer soon.

LOONEY TUNES Will NOT Leave Max This December
A moment of understandable unhappiness circulated through the wider internet sphere when Max sent out a recent release noting which titles were leaving and coming to its platform in December. Listed among the titles leaving Max on December 31 were the Looney Tunes shorts, The Looney Tunes Show, and Looney Tunes: Back in Action. But happily, whether in actual error or in “oops, we angered the internet” error, it seems that Max listed most of the Looney Tunes titles in error. Seasons 1-15 of Looney Tunes will remain available on Max for now, as will The Looney Tunes Show.

In an updated release, Max shared, “Looney Tunes was included in error as a title leaving the platform. This is not the case, and the show will continue streaming on Max.” Still, the response to the perceived loss of Looney Tunes on the streamer speaks to a greater wound at the moment. Of course, this specific news struck a nerve because Max already removed seasons 16-31 of the iconic shorts series in 2022. That includes material first released in the 1950s.
Max, did, at the time, keep its current offerings of Looney Tunes‘ first 15 seasons. But it feels hard not to consider their existence as tenuous at best. The first season of Looney Tunes released in the 1930s, and the show has incredible historic weight. It would be a huge shame for it to fade from the world. We feel glad that will not happen today. It does seem worth noting that Looney Tunes: Back in Action (2003) will still leave Max in December.

Separate from Looney Tunes and even from Max as a streamer, the growing trend of simply disappearing properties from streaming channels is an alarming one. From iconic shows we love from the past to completed modern works we may never see, all media seems to exist in a fragile place. It feels hard to say what will happen going forward. But, for now, if you really love something, consider buying it on physical media.

ALIEN: ROMULUS’ Place on the ALIEN Timeline Has Been Revealed
“In space no can hear you scream,” but in a packed theater everyone can. Alien movies have made audiences do just that since Ridley Scott first brought a Xenomorph to the big screen in 1979. Now the iconic monster is set to return to theaters once again. While Noah Hawley is developing an Alien TV show, a new installment in the film franchise will premiere in 2024. Who will direct space’s most fearsome creature next? And how does this entry fit into series?
Recently, star Cailee Spaeny revealed more about where exactly Alien: Romulus sits in the franchise’s timeline. She noted to Variety, “It’s supposed to slot in between the first movie and the second movie… They brought the same team from ‘Aliens,’ the James Cameron film. The same people who built those xenomorphs actually came on and built ours. So getting to see the original design with the original people who have been working on these films for 45-plus years and has been so much of their life has been really incredible.”

This means that Romulus occurs between 1979’s Ridley Scott-directed Alien and James Cameron’s 1986 movie Aliens. There’s no word, however, how closely this movie will interact with elements of either one of the existing movies. Still, it seems like a great place to set a new Alien film. This placement leaves room for Alien: Romulus to reference events that already happened on the franchise’s timeline and to allude to things that viewers know are to come. We also love hearing that plenty of xenomorph fun is on the way.
Here’s everything we know about Alien: Romulus so far.
TitleThe ninth movie in the franchise is currently called Alien: Romulus. It’s unknown if that working title will ultimately be the film’s final one.
Alien: Romulus‘ Plot
The film does not have an official plot yet, but it’s described as an “original stand-alone” entry unconnected to previous films. It will feature “a group of young people on a distant world” who “find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe.” Most recently we learned that Romulus is set between Alien and Aliens on the franchise’s timeline.
When the movie was originally intended to debut on Hulu, it was compared in scope to the original film in the franchise. For those trying to decipher any meaning from the film’s title, Romulus was the legendary founder of Rome and its first king.
Behind the ScenesDirector Fede Álvarez (Don’t Breathe, 2013’s Evil Dead) co-wrote the script with Rodo Sayagues. Ridley Scott is an executive producer on the film. Álvarez told Scott about his idea for the spinoff movie years prior, and Scott eventually reached out and asked Álvarez if he wanted to make it.
In early July 2023 the director announced on Instrgram the end of filming after nearly four months of shooting primarily in Budapest. His celebratory post would have made Red Auerbach proud.
Alien: Romulus‘ Cast
Alien: Romulus stars Cailee Spaeny (Mare of Easttown). Joining her in the young cast are David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu.
Alien: Romulus‘ Release Date
Alien: Romulus will arrive in theaters on August 16, 2024.
The thin, warm summer air will help anyone in space hear audiences scream.
