GODZILLA MINUS ONE Heading Back to Cinemas in Black and White
The original Japanese masterpiece Godzilla hit theaters in 1954. The moody black-and-white production introduced the world to kaiju cinema and launched a beloved franchise. Almost 70 years later, with 32 Japanese sequels under his gargantuan belt, the massive lizard returned for Godzilla Minus One. This movie sets its action slightly before the original movie, firmly in Postwar Japan. The country is at its lowest point, defeated and desolated. When Godzilla comes a trampling, the people will have to band together to save themselves. It’s one of the best movies of the year, and now you can see it in throwback monochrome.

This news, which we first saw via CBR, is very exciting for Godzilla fans. Godzilla Minus One is perhaps the closest in tone and focus to the original movie, and while its colors are great, the chance to see it in theaters in black-and-white feels like a particular treat.

We should add, so far Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color only has a Japanese release date. That is January 12, 2024. However, given the massive North American take for the film, it’s only a matter of time. The movie made $11 million on its opening weekend, making it the biggest opening for a live-action Japanese movie, and the biggest opening for a foreign language movie in 2023. That is, if you pardon the pun, huge. Given next year is the 70th anniversary of the original, we could easily see a Godzilla double feature with the OG and the new one in the near future.
At least we have this super rad poster for the Japanese release of Godzilla Minus One in black and white to tide us over until we get to see it over here.

Ryan Gosling’s New ‘I’m Just Ken’ EP Includes ‘Merry Kristmas Barbie’ Track and Music Video
I’m on record—and the right side of history—in saying Ryan Gosling’s “I’m Just Ken” power ballad in Barbie is one of the greatest moments in movie history. It’s the gift that keeps on giving and always will. Now it has, somehow, given us even more. Gosling and song composers Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt just gifted us a surprise present ahead of the holidays. They’ve released Ken the EP, a special album with multiple versions of “I’m Just Ken.” And the EP’s “Merry Kristmas Barbie” also has its own amazing music video.
“I’m Just Ken” is no longer Kenough to round out your favorite playlist. Ken the EP (which we first heard about at The Hollywood Reporter) features four tracks from Gosling and Ronson. It has the original version of the song from the film and a new “Merry Kristmas Barbie” recording. It also has an “In My Feelings” acoustic rendition of the Kenergy-filled ballad. And the last song is a “Purple Disco Machine Remix” of Gosling’s “I’m Just Ken.” Each offers a very different way to enjoy the song, which sounds fantastic in any style.
We didn’t need proof of that, but we’re obviously very glad we have it.

Ken the EP is available to stream everywhere. Atlantic Records also shared the “I’m Just Ken (In My Feelings)” version on YouTube. That’s also where you’ll find another amazing gift.

The official video for “I’m Just Ken (Merry Kristmas Barbie)” is not everything you’d want from Gosling giving an over-the-top performance of a holiday rendition of the song in a studio with a full band. It’s even hammy-ier than that.
That music video exists in the same universe as La La Land, and you can’t convince me otherwise. That means Seb is now officially a Ken.
More importantly, I now have a new Christmas song to listen to 10,000 times every December. It will replace the 10,000 times I would have listened to the regular version of “I’m Just Ken” during the month.

Dave Filoni Teases a Thrawn vs. Hera STAR WARS Rematch
One of the highlights of Star Wars: Ahsoka was seeing the first-ever live-action Grand Admiral Thrawn. The best part was that the same man who voiced him in Star Wars Rebels, Lars Mikkelsen, portrayed him. At the end of Ahsoka, Thrawn escapes far-off Peridea, where he’s been in exile since the end of Rebels. And no doubt, he’s about to make a very unwelcome return to an unsuspecting galaxy. Likely, this will happen in the untitled Dave Filoni-directed movie, taking place within The Mandalorian timeframe. Now, Filoni has dropped some hints as to what we might see for the returning Imperial genius. And who he will battle.
In an interview with Empire magazine, Filoni said “[Thrawn’s] foil throughout Rebels was Hera. Pitting the two generals against one another is something that I find interesting.” Just based on that tidbit, it seems we could see Hera (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) leading the charge when Thrawn sets his sights on the New Republic. And she may be doing so by going rogue. As Ahsoka showed us, the New Republic doesn’t seem to fear any of the Imperial Remnant. They just don’t seem to think of Thrawn as much of a threat to the galaxy as he was under Palpatine.

Filoni also mentioned that he wants to see Thrawn united with a familiar character. “We set up Captain Pellaeon in The Mandalorian [season three], and that’s a character that goes with Thrawn, so I’d love to see the two of them together.” Author Timothy Zahn originally introduced Gilad Pellaeon in the 1991 novel Heir to the Empire, which also introduced Thrawn. This novel also kicked off the whole Expanded Universe in earnest. Pellaeon appeared briefly in live-action as part of the Shadow Council in The Mandalorian, still believing that his master Thrawn was out there and would return. Looks like Filoni is setting him up as Thrawn’s right-hand man once more. We can’t wait to see what fresh hell these two cook up for the New Republic.

Make SUZUME Your Last Movie of 2023
On April 14 of this year, Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume released in theaters in the United States. It then returned for another limited release in late October. Depending on your taste in movies, Suzume may have been appointment viewing. In that case, you already know everything this piece will have to say. Alternatively, having heard some buzz, you might have caught it upon its limited release. Or, like me, it’s possible you saw it pass on the outskirts of your cinematic awareness, intended twice to see it, but upon discovering a large part of the plot focused on a character turning into a chair, let it slip by. This was a sad mistake, now happily corrected. Although we have seen many exceptional movies in 2023, Suzume‘s gorgeous animation and perfectly bittersweet, fantastical tale make it one film worth watching before the year ends.

Suzume is in deep conversation with another 2023 movie you almost definitely saw, or, at least, heard about—Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron. With the overall appeal of Studio Ghibli, the initial idea this might be Miyazaki’s last movie, and the English-dub’s star-studded cast, the movie rightfully made a lot of waves. But if you enjoyed The Boy and the Heron, you will enjoy Suzume equally, if not more, depending on your tastes. Both movies feature a young protagonist who is coming of age while dealing with the sharp loss of a parent and the weight of both personal and structural griefs. Although the heroes literally contend with their pains, the process also takes the shape of monsters and adventures into fantastical realms.
But while The Boy and the Heron goes on an incredibly abstract adventure, Suzume keeps a more streamlined narrative. And it brings to the forefront characters that are a touch more relatable to modern audiences.

Suzume, herself, and the sisterhood of women she meets on her travels offer an endearing array of femininity. Of special note is Suzume’s Aunt Tamaki. Aunt Tamaki is allowed to both resent Suzume for becoming her defacto child and to love her deeply. This creates a complex meditation on motherhood that is not often explored. Every woman Suzume encounters aids her, offering her something to take on the rest of her journey. And together, they weave a beautiful found family.

Of course, Souta, who I wouldn’t precisely call Suzume’s love interest, is nothing but charming—a kind-hearted and dashing fellow with a bit of mythology and magic to him. He carries off his role perfectly in both human and chair-form. (Yes, he turns into a chair for basically 80% of the movie!) Kudos on that characterization because I was initially very concerned about the chair. But the chair works. The relationship between Suzume and Souta is also well-balanced. It holds an intimacy beyond friendship, one of shared journey. But it does not go so far into romance that it distracts from the ultimate story of the movie, which is more self-driven.

Suzume also brings to life an exceptional modern-day fairy tale. Technology and modernity interweave in the fantasy narrative, as if to say, we haven’t lost our ability to immerse ourselves in magic, even if it is almost the year 2024. Many magical stories almost require their characters to lose technological connections so that the magic can stand out. Blocking a hero’s ability to make calls, or swipe into the subway, or other conveniences that technology brings leaves them only with the peril of the fantasy. But Suzume folds these everyday occurrences into its dream effortlessly. Social media, phones, and other technologies enhance the greater feeling of magic and don’t for a minute break the spell.

It must be mentioned that this movie so beautiful it could bring you to tears. Every character design, every piece of animation, every last moment in Suzume is breathtaking. If you can still see it on the big screen somewhere, I would. It is legitimately one of the most gorgeous movies I have ever seen. It is definitely the most beautiful movie of 2023. Skyscapes, the ocean, abandoned ruins, cities, trains, and fantasy realms alike, every last part of it this film transforms into something truly magical. Beyond the overt impact, there were also many little details and marginalia to look for in every turn, enriching the universe.

Finally, Suzume invites us to look at the wounds we all carry. But then it asks us to engage with them and close certain doors, leaving some things only to the gods. As the year reaches its end, there’s a tendency to account. We think of our accomplishments, but also of failures, tragedies, and hardships that linger. But Suzume wants us to find the magic of abandoned and lost places, both inside and out. We can grieve them, embrace the life they held, and allow them peace.
As Suzume is able to do for herself, we can embrace pain, but make sure to look at how far we’ve traveled and where the road has brought us. Sometimes, it really is the friends we made along the way.
Suzume is now streaming on Crunchyroll. It will release in Blu-ray on March 12. “The limited edition Blu-ray edition of Suzume will include a beautiful 60-page art book, four art cards, a director’s commentary from Makoto Shinkai, and much more!”
Suzume ⭐ (5 of 5)

WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS to End with Season 6
It appears one vampire coven’s time in Staten Island is coming to an end. Via Vulture, we’ve learned that next year’s sixth season of the undead comedy series What We Do in the Shadows will be its last. At the end of season four, FX renewed the series for a further two seasons, to the joy of many of the show’s most hardcore fans. But after 2024, it will be time to say farewell to Nandor (Kayvan Novak), Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), Laszlo (Matt Berry), Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch), and their human familiar Guillermo (Harvey Guillén).

A spin-off of Taika Waititi’s 2014 film of the same name, the show grew beyond its predecessor into a legit cult phenomenon of its own. It earned some 21 Emmy Nominations, winning for Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes in 2022. However, none so far for its incredible and hilarious cast, who deserve all the accolades. So why end now? Showrunner Paul Simms said the biggest question the series needed to answer before the finale was what would happen with Guillermo. However, Guillermo got his wish to become a vampire in season five only to change his mind becoming human again. It seems that completes his arc.

What We Do in the Shadows is one of the best vampire series ever on TV, not to mention one of the best comedies ever made for TV. So we are very sad to see it go. However, we can’t deny six seasons is a good run. Most other great vampire shows like Buffy and True Blood only saw diminishing returns after their fifth or sixth seasons. So maybe now is a good time to bow out for our immortal friends. But if there is any show that is deserving of the “six seasons and a movie” push, we think it’s What We Do in the Shadows. Let’s raise a glass of AB Negative to our undead friends.

You Can Now Read Christopher Nolan’s OPPENHEIMER Script Online
Oppenheimer told the story of history’s most infamous scientist. But the movie’s own story is far from over. It’s still airing in many theaters. The film is also all but guaranteed to garner countless nominations for major awards. It will likely take home a lot of them, too. And while the ‘Barbenheimer” phenomenon has already secured Oppenheimer a spot in cinematic history, the movie’s place among the greatest films ever made won’t be known until we have more time and perspective. What we don’t have to wait on, though, is a chance to pore over the script ourselves. You can now read Christoper Nolan’s Oppenheimer script online.

Deadline‘s “Read the Screenplay” series has let fans take a look at the full scripts of 2023 films like Across the Spider-Verse and John Wick: Chapter 4. Now the latest entry in the collection dives into another of the year’s best, most successful films, Oppenheimer.
While it’s always insightful to see the written works that serve as the foundation of popular movies, you won’t encounter many like this. As star Cillian Murphy has spoken about previously, Nolan (along with Kai Bird and Martin Sherwin) wrote the screenplay in a very unusual way. It’s presented in first person in J. Robert Oppenheimer’s scenes (which make up the vast majority of the film). So when the script says he looks down at his prepared speech during his testimony it reads, “I glance down at my notes.” A typical script would say, “He looks down at his notes.”

That’s no small change. It completely changes the experience of reading the script. It puts you in Oppenheimer’s shoes as he defends his entire career and life. This is his story, one that changed the world forever.
Will this be the script that takes home Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards? It very well might, but that doesn’t matter right now. We don’t need to know how Oppenheimer‘s story will end to enjoy reading it.

We Engineered a Complete ALIEN Cinematic Timeline Video Breakdown (And Bonus Graph!)
Every movie fan knows that in space no one can hear you scream. Just like everyone knows Hollywood loves hearing the “ka-ching” of box office sales anytime it releases a new Alien movie. No one could have imagined it at the time, but Ridley Scott’s iconic 1979 film launched an entire sci-fi horror series that’s still going strong. The franchise will soon deliver not only a new film, but a new live-action TV show. When will both take place, though? There have been so many Alien movies, along with other tales told in various media, it can be hard to keep remember when every installment took place. What’s a sequel and what’s a prequel? When did certain characters join and leave the story? And what’s canonical and what’s not? It’s a lot to keep track of. Only, you don’t have to anymore. We did it for you.
Nerdist‘s own Adam Murray went deep into the history and lore of space, monsters, mega corporations, and milk-filled robots in this in-depth video “The Complete Alien Cinematic Timeline.” It will help you accurately place every major event and figure in the franchise. And as a bonus it will also prove why you should really avoid sticking your face in weird eggs.
From Engineers and Xenomorphs, to Ripleys and androids, for over 40 years the Alien franchise has provided a whole lot of story and world-building. (Or, rather, space building.) Now, with both Alien: Romulus and Noah Hawley’s Alien show on the horizon, we thought this was the perfect time to help make sense of a complicated timeline.
In addition to this great video breakdown, we also made you a cool chart. It not only easily places every major event in its correct order. This graph also highlights exactly what’s canon and what’s not. It has way more answers than Prometheus. Though in fairness Prometheus provided zero answers so that wasn’t a tough hurdle.

We love a good timeline chart as much as David loves playing the flute with himself.
Now that we made sense of this timeline, we are left to wonder: what new entries await the future of Alien and where and when will they take place? In space no one can hear you scream. But if you ever need us to update this chart in the future give us a holler. Just promise us in the meantime if you come across a weird space egg you’ll keep your face far away from it. Trust us, if Alien has taught us anything over four decades it’s that space eggs always cause problems.

THE WALKING DEAD: THE ONES WHO LIVE Gives Us a Look Into Jadis’ Life
The Walking Dead is over but, as we know, the end of the flagship series that’s been in fans’ hearts for over a decade doesn’t mean this world is done. The show already has had four spinoff series, Fear the Walking Dead, Tales of the Walking Dead, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, The Walking Dead: Dead City, and The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon on TV. The latter, starring Maggie and Negan, is returning for a second season in the future along with Daryl’s spinoff. But, there is another spinoff coming soon that is perhaps the most important one in the universe. Rick and Michonne are coming back together for The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live. Unfortunately, there is another one who lived and that’s Jadis.
Years ago, she picked up a very wounded Rick Grimes and flew off in a CRM helicopter. And, for those who didn’t watch World Beyond, Jadis indeed traded him to the CRM and started working for the organization. In an Entertainment Weekly interview, actress Pollyanna McIntosh gives more info about what Jadis is up to as well as a new image of her. She still has terrible hair, apparently.
“There will be some of the Jadis that you will recognize from World Beyond,” McIntosh said. “She is in the position of Warrant Officer Jadis Stokes. She is still working with the Civic Republic and the Civic Republic Military. So she’s a committed follower of the CRM, but people are not just their jobs, and the old Jadis that we got to know and who has tried her best but has lost many times is a big driving undercurrent of where she’s coming from.”
The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live Will Bring Rick and Michonne Back in February 2024The Walking Dead‘s final panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2022 gave us the biggest news of all: a Rick Grimes and Michonne series was coming soon. Two years later, we finally know that The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live will have a release date of February 25, 2024. Rick and Michonne’s return is oh-so-close after years of waiting. The above clip is short but we get a little commentary from Danai Gurira and Andrew Lincoln (his Britishness is always jarring, right?). We see some new footage spliced together but it is hard to make sense of it because the clip is so short.
There are currently two teaser trailers out there, with one focusing on Michonne’s perspective and the other from Rick’s POV.
Here’s a breakdown of The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live:
This series presents an epic love story of two characters changed by a changed world. Kept apart by distance. By an unstoppable power. By the ghosts of who they were. Rick and Michonne are thrown into another world, built on a war against the dead… And ultimately, a war against the living. Can they find each other and who they were in a place and situation unlike any they’ve ever known before? Are they enemies? Lovers? Victims? Victors? Without each other, are they even alive — or will they find that they, too, are the Walking Dead?

The name of this Rick and Michonne series should be familiar to fans. Rick first said the phrase “we are the ones who live” back in season five while chatting with Deanna about his group. And, we heard Richonne as well as many other characters say that phrase in The Walking Dead‘s finale episode. So it holds a lot of significance to Rick and Michonne’s individual and collective journeys.
We certainly can’t wait to see Rick and Michonne together again.
There’s also some casting news. Per Deadline, Lucifer alumna Lesley-Ann Brandt will portray Pearl Thorne. Details about that character are currently unknown. We also know that The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live will bring back Pollyanna McIntosh as Jadis. This isn’t shocking considering she’s the one who took Rick away in that helicopter. Terry O’Quinn and Matt Jeffries will portray Beale and Nat, respectively.
During a Walking Dead preview, Gimple warns us that we will see “Red Machete Rick” again. Remember him? He was the one with the brown murder jacket who was a lot unhinged around seasons five and six. This is probably not a good thing but if anyone can bring him back to normal, it is Michonne. We got a glimpse of Rick in The Walking Dead‘s final episode and he looks like hell. But that scene is from the past so he’s presumably in an even worse state at this point. And, there’s also Michonne with her new gear, braving the world alone. Love to see it. Will their show end with an Alexandria reunion? We hope so.

So there you have it. A lot is happening in The Walking Dead universe and there will surely be more details about these spinoffs as well as new announcements. The show that won hearts is bowing out but there’s plenty left to explore in the land of the dead, so let’s keep walking right towards these spinoffs.
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Season Two – “The Book of Carol” Is ComingWe are done with the first season of Daryl Dixon’s adventure, but there is already great news about his show’s second season. The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon will bring Carol back next season. We don’t know if she will also end up in France or if they will meet in some odd middle. Either way, it will be good to see those besties together again. A new teaser shows that next season will focus a lot on Carol’s journey.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner David Zabel gave fans more insight into season two. He reveals that the Nest is a prominent location in season two and Carol’s previous comment about some mystery person coming back will come into play. “There’s also another clue… this moment in the radio call in episode 5 where she talks about something or someone having come back,” said Zabel. “And the impression we get, and Daryl also gets, is that something’s a little off for her, something’s wrong. And so that’s going to also function into the story for Carol in season 2.”
We cannot wait to see how it all unfolds. In the meantime, we look forward to the return of the great Rick Grimes and Michonne.
