THUNDERBOLTS* First-Look Revealed at SDCC
At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, Marvel Studios revealed a first-look at the upcoming Thunderbolts* movie and additionally showed fans a first-look teaser trailer at the film. The movie brings to life a whole new team of MCU anti-heroes and teases a weird, but fun adventure with those characters who aren’t always squeaky clean. Thunderbolts*, of course, features Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine, Ghost, Red Guardian, Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes (a.k.a Winter Soldier), US Agent, and Taskmaster. And this first-look Thunderbolts* teaser trailer gives us a little bit of a look at how exactly these pieces will begrudgingly come together.
The Thunderbolts* teaser reveals a whole new kind of tone for an MCU movie. And we suppose that makes sense since this will be the first Marvel Studios movie after Deadpool & Wolverine, which was certainly a unique experience. But we are all for this new era of Marvel mayhem.
The teaser focuses on Yelena (Florence Pugh). She knocks on Alexei (David Harbour)’s door who cleans himself up as he welcomes her into his messy apartment. He asks what brings her there, and she says something’s wrong with her, an emptiness. She tried to throw herself into work after Natasha’s death, and we see cuts of her killing people. We then cut to Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) again with long hair. Cut back to Yelena and she fights US Agent (Wyatt Russell) and Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen).
They all do bad things. Eventually Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) arrives and tells them there are no good guys and bad guys. There are only bad guys and worse guys. We then get a montage of action, and a shot of Bucky’s arm in a dishwasher. Valentina assembles them all, the Thunderbolts are definitely the baddie Avengers.
Well, we didn’t see that one coming. The full title of the Thunderbolts* is Thunderbolts*

Thunderbolts* will release on May 2, 2025.

THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS Reveals Teaser and Official Title
The Fantastic Four is Marvel Comics’ “First Family,” and their arrival in the MCU has been a long time coming. After a mid-2000s duo of films that met with modest success, a 2015 reboot that totally flopped. Marvel fans have waited patiently for the iconic FF to make it to the MCU. And now, they’re here at last. At San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios presented fans with a special preview teaser trailer of The Fantastic Four film, which has a new official title as The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Production will begin for this film on July 30, which is right after SDCC.

The iconic heroes are here, in all their ’60s glory with Mister Fantastic teaching kids. The entire crew heads to space, seemingly as run-of-the-mill astronauts and blast off for space adventures.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD Reveals Giancarlo Esposito’s Role as Sidewinder and a New Trailer
Captain America: Brave New World is taking us on a fresh adventure with Sam Wilson taking up the mantle and donning that infamous red, white, and blue suit. We saw Anthony Mackie and others like Giancarlo Esposito in action in a previous trailer for the MCU’s fourth standalone Captain America film. But San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) gave fans some new Captain America: Brave New World insight into the film, including Giancarlo Esposito’s role in it as Sidewinder, the King of the Serpent Society.
In the panel, Marvel leader Kevin Feige said that this film would be a return to the grounded aspects of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Sam will carry his counselor background with him into the narrative. It will remain to be seen how that plays out onscreen.
The audience got to look at a new clip featuring Harrison Ford’s Thunderbolt Ross directly talking about the Celestials coming out of Earth. And, Adamantium gets a MCU introduction. It was discovered in the ruins of where a dead Celestial appeared in the ocean and is now the most valuable element on the planet. Fans also saw Ross become Red Hulk in the clip, which has yet to be widely available.

Captain America: Brave New World will fly into theaters on February 14, 2025. In the meantime, keep with everything that you need to know about this film right here at Nerdist.

Full Trailer for THE PENGUIN Showcases Oz’s Search for Power
Of all the unsure futures for DC properties and projects once WB and Discovery merged, and DC Studios rebooted their universe, the one I most wanted to continue was Matt Reeves’ The Batman. The big hit movie with a singularly grimy take on Gotham City already had a sequel and a spinoff series in the works. Neither, thankfully, faced the scrap pile, and indeed that spinoff series, The Penguin, is exceedingly close to debuting. With Colin Farrell’s Oz Cobb vying for power in Gotham’s criminal underworld, gangsters and goons are bound to clash.
During the Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, Farrell (via pre-recorded video) introduced the full trailer for The Penguin. We get to see just how seedy the gang war is in Gotham. Penguin tries to take over the drugs trade in the city, assuming control of the family after Carmine Falcone’s death. However, Falcone’s daughter, Sofia, arrives to assert her own authority after a stint in Arkham Asylum. If she thinks she’s rehabilitating, I’d hate to see the way she was before.

At one point we hear that Sofia was “the Hangman.” While we don’t know what that means in the context of the series, the Hangman in DC Comics is a thing. Sofia Falcone first appeared in The Long Halloween by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale. By the time of the follow-up series Dark Victory, she assumes the mantle of the serial killer, the Hangman. Her targets were anyone associated with her father’s death. So…great!

Matt Reeves and producer Dylan Clark refer to their Gotham City universe as “The Batman Epic Crime Saga,” outside of any other DC universe. In addition to Farrell, The Penguin stars Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone; Michael Zegan as Alberto Falcone; Michael Kelly as Johnny Vitti; and mother-effing Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni.
The Penguin premieres September 19.

New STAR TREK Comedy Series in the Works from Tawny Newsome and Justin Simien
It’s a hefty Star Trek day at the ol’ San Diego Comic-Con this year. In addition to news about Strange New Worlds season three, Starfleet Academy, and Section 31, fans also learned about another, as-yet-unannounced series. During the section of Saturday’s Hall H panel about Lower Decks, Paramount announced a new live-action comedy series from Tawny Newsome and Justin Simien. Newsome, of course, plays Mariner on Lower Decks while Simien, who moderated the panel, wrote Dear White People and directed last year’s Haunted Mansion.

In the series, “Federation Outsiders” serving “a gleaming resort planet” learn all of their exploits are video fodder for the entire quadrant. They call it “25th Century appointment viewing,” meaning we have a time period and little else.
This is obviously in the very early stages Kurtzman, Simien and Newsome executive produce alongside Aaron Baiers, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth. The project comes from the studio behind the Star Trek universe, CBS Studios, where Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout is based. In addition to her role in Lower Decks, Newsome also serves as a writer on Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.

First Look at Minnie Driver as Penguin in BATMAN: CAPED CRUSADER
I got the opportunity to watch Batman: Caped Crusader early. While the excitement about a new Batman cartoon would be high enough, a 1940s-styled one from Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams, and Matt Reeves kicked it up four notches. Right away, in the very first episode, we got a sense this show was playing fast and loose with established canon and character norms. The first episode shows us a Gotham underworld terrified of one mobster: the Penguin. This is a Penguin as we’ve never seen before. As you can see in the image below, it’s a gender-swapped Penguin, Oswalda Cobblepot, as voiced by Minnie Driver.

The reveal comes out of the official Batman: Caped Crusader panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. Timm introduced a screening of the first episode to the Hall H audience and then brought out executive producer Matt Reeves, Driver, and fellow actors Hamish Linklater (Batman), and Jamie Chung (Dr. Harleen Quinzel).
Prime Video also unveiled a clip from the first episode. While it doesn’t show the Penguin herself, it shows just how terrified she makes the corrupt in Gotham City.
While I can’t say much more about individual episodes, I can share that the season is tremendously good. Other villains are remixed and rethought throughout the season in really fun ways. It feels at once very different from Batman: The Animated Series and clearly from the same creator. Excellent stuff. If the other Penguin TV offering this year is as good, Cobblepot fans will be very happy.
Batman: Caped Crusader drops its entire 10-episode first season on August 1 on Prime Video.

STAR TREK: SECTION 31 with Michelle Yeoh Shares First Action-Packed Trailer at SDCC
We understand why some Star Trek fans are still upset. They thought Michelle Yeoh’s Emperor Philippa Georgiou was getting her own spinoff series. Instead she’s getting her own spinoff movie. We were also excited to watch her memorable Discovery character for an entire season (or more) rather than just for a single film. But for those still disappointed by the change we have good news and more good news. Paramount+ and CBS Studios released Star Trek: Section 31‘s first teaser trailer during Star Trek‘s Hall H panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. It is absolute fantastic. Doubly good is that it’s so fantastic we won’t be surprised if Georgiou eventually does get her own show anyway.
If she does, though, we’re not sure which version of the Emperor we’ll see. Because this trailer also provided fans their first look at Miku Martineau as young Georgiou, and she’s just as riveting.
Section 31 stars Omari Hardwick, Sam Richardson, and Kacey Rohl joined director Olatunde Osunsanmi and executive producer Alex Kurtzman on Hall H’s stage to update fans on the film. But the real highlight came when Yeoh made a surprise visit via video. She introduced the movie’s first incredibly fun trailer.
It suggests we’ll get Georgiou’s backstory from the evil Mirror Universe where she once ruled as Empress. Martineau will bring that younger version of the character to life.

Her bloody history will come back to haunt her when she sets out on a “secret division of Starfleet” which tasks her “with protecting the United Federation of Planets” on a mission that will also make her “face the sins of her past.”
If you’re unfamiliar with Section 31 this trailer only teases its covert operations. You can read more about the group with our in-depth primer on Star Trek‘s secret organization.

Written by Craig Sweeny, Section 31 also stars Sven Ruygrok (One Piece), Robert Kazinsky (Pacific Rim), Humberly Gonzalez (Ginny & Georgia), and James Hiroyuki Liao (Barry). How many of them will survive their mission with Emperor Philippa Georgiou? We’ll find out in “early 2025” when the film debuts on Section 31.
After that we also hope to find out those who do make it will also star on a Georgiou spinoff series.

Monsters Rule in First Teaser for DC’s CREATURE COMMANDOS
We’ve been looking forward to the beginning of James Gunn’s new DCU since he took over last year. While all the Superman and Supergirl news has kept us buzzing, we always knew the first project out of the gate would be the animated Creature Commandos. At SDCC 2024’s “Jim Lee and Friends” panel, Lee brought out Gunn to show all in attendance the first teaser for the series, due out in December. And because Max wants people to watch, they sent it out wide too! Check it out below.
The teaser opens with Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) bringing Rick Flag Sr (Frank Grillo) into Belle Reve to meet his new team. Presumably this takes place after The Suicide Squad, because a) this is Rick Flag’s dad, and 2) congress says Task Force X can be no more. Waller, ever the stickler for loopholes, says congress has disallowed human prisoners to go on missions. Non-humans are fair game. So monsters it is!

Flag’s team consists of fish lady Nina Mazursky (Zoe Chao), G.I. Robot (Sean Gunn), Weasel (also Sean Gunn), Dr. Phosphorus (Alan Tudyk), the Bride (Indira Varma), and Frankenstein (technically’s monster, David Harbour). The tone seems very much in keeping with the Suicide Squad violent irreverence, which makes sense. Other cast members include Steve Agee as Economos, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana, and Anya Chalotra as Circe.
With Waller, Economos, and Weasel’s involvement, it seems this series will overlap with Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad in some way. Certainly more than I initially thought. We knew Peacemaker season two would be part of the DCU. I’m honestly okay if they figure out a way to make The Suicide Squad new canon also. In any case, it’s good stuff.
Creature Commandos debuts on Max this December.

THE WALKING DEAD: DARYL DIXON Season Three Is Official, Will Take Caryl to Spain in 2025
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season three was all but certain to most fans. Norman Reedus hinted heavily at the show’s renewal a while back and now it is officially a go! For now, Daryl continues to be an agent of chaos and occasionally hope in France. He’s once again being a surrogate dad to someone, this time a young boy named Laurent whom people believe is a savior of sort. Season two will take us back and forth between France and Carol’s quest in America to find her long lost pal. But, we will continue to see new parts of the world in The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season three, which will take us to Spain. This season will land in 2025, presumably after Dead City‘s second round.
As revealed at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon will begin production in August 2024 in Madrid. Future locations will include the Galicia, Aragon, Catalonia and Valencia regions.

“We are so proud of these shows and incredibly grateful for the way this new chapter in The Walking Dead Universe has been embraced by the fans,” said Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks. “Sending Daryl, and then Carol, to France was such an inspired and visually striking move for this franchise, a chance to do something truly different. We can’t wait to continue the travels of this iconic duo with a third season produced and set in Spain, another beautiful country with a passionate TWD fanbase that is already buzzing with anticipation.”
Well, well, wellllll. This sounds like Carol and Daryl could actually reunite in France by the season two finale. But we wonder what will draw them to head towards Spain in Daryl Dixon season three? The chaos overseas continues to entice us. We wonder if Daryl will also refuse to learn Spanish as well. Of course, no one is more excited than Norman Reedus, who clearly loves playing Daryl Dixon.
Reedus said: “I couldn’t be more thrilled to announce a third season and to be working side by side with the brilliant Melissa McBride. Season two is some of my favorite storytelling of this series. Watching Melissa shine along with our brilliant cast and crew has been one of my fondest memories playing this character. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did making it and we can’t wait to keep the story going.”

Melissa McBride adds: “I’m really appreciating the new challenges for Daryl and Carol being so far from all they’ve ever known… what it means for them, what it brings for each of them, apart and together. There’s still so much ahead to unpack in France for the coming season two, and a breathtaking finale. And now Spain! I already know that David Zabel’s storytelling is making the most of all that is so beautiful and unique to Spain. We start shooting there in just a few weeks… such excitement looking forward!”
Until then, we are patiently waiting to see The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season two when it arrives on September 29.

THE WALKING DEAD: DARYL DIXON Season 2 Trailer Sets Up an Expansive Caryl Story
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon is heading into its sophomore season with actions spanning more than one country. This season, called “The Book of Carol,” will bring the crossbow carrying hero’s bestie into the picture as she sets off to find her friend. We don’t know if we will get a reunion between the two this time around (it’s doubtful considering the show is going on for a third and possibly fourth season). But we do know that we will see each of them doing what they do best: taking down walkers and bad humans with style. After a couple of teaser videos, we are finally getting an official trailer for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – “The Book of Carol” and it sets up an explosive and expansive story.
The trailer for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – “The Book of Carol” debuted at San Diego Comic-Con. And a few lucky fans will get to attend a screening of the season two’s first episode on July 26. In the clip, we see Daryl pondering if he will return to America with Isabelle and Laurent. He’s really a whole family man having a chill life (at least, for a bit) in France. Meanwhile, Carol knows that Daryl is overseas and she enlists the help of someone to fly her over there on a very unsafe plane. It looks like she makes it somewhere near there and has to fight walkers coming out of the ground. Meanwhile, Genet has gotten her hands on Daryl it seems and he’s looking like he is in bad shape. We don’t know how they will find each other but the chances of a Caryl reunion look super good, right?

We cannot wait to talk about when the show returns on September 29.
This is a developing story…more to come.
