Meet MARVEL’s Newest CHAMPIONS, Plus the Newest IRON MAN Is a Lady
Lots of news in today’s Comics Relief, starting with the young whipper-snappers of the Marvel Universe showing the old guard how it’s done. Read on for all the details…
“We are the Champions, My Friends…“
It was just last year that new, young heroes like Ms. Marvel and the Miles Morales Spider-Man joined the All-New, All-Different Avengers to much fanfare. Well, I guess the old 1960s phrase “don’t trust anyone over 30” is still in style in the Marvel Universe, as Ms. Marvel, Nova, and Miles Morales have just burnt up their draft cards Avengers membership cards and are starting their very own team, one with a vaguely familiar name to longtime Marvel fans–the Champions. The new ongoing Champions series begins in October from writer Mark Waid and artist Humberto Ramos.
Along with the three former Avengers, the Champions will be made up of the Amadeus Cho Hulk, the Vision’s android daughter Viv Vision, and the teenage, time displaced Cyclops. This team takes its name from the 1970’s Marvel super-team the Champions – a name that has been mired in legal battles that have prevented its re-use until now. The original ’70s Champions were Angel, Iceman, Ghost Rider, Black Widow and Hercules–basically, the high profile Marvel heroes that weren’t currently on any team at that given moment. But that perfectly good name has gone unused at Marvel do to a legal conflict with Heroic Publishing that has now been resolved.
“Marvel Comics and Heroic Publishing have entered into a joint agreement that will allow for the publication of a Marvel’s Champions comic book, while at the same time allowing Heroic to continue publishing its own line of separate Champions and Champions-related titles,” said Marvel. “We’re pleased to have reached an agreement and wish Heroic Publishing the best in their future endeavors.”
As for what separates this new book from the Avengers, writer Mark Waid said “It feels good in that, when we first started talking about names for this group, we tended to go for ‘something something Avengers.’ That always seemed off-mission for me. If they’re cutting the cord, if they’re going off on their own to establish themselves as a thing onto themselves, they kind of need their own name. They are ultimately very socially conscious, very activist-minded, and very positive about being superheroes, so the name had to feel like a really upbeat superhero name.” [Entertainment Weekly]
Meet Marvel’s Newest Iron Person.
Speaking of youngsters taking over for veteran Marvel heroes, it seems that very soon, Iron Man isn’t going to be Tony Stark anymore, or…. well…. much of a man anymore for that matter. The newest Iron Man is in fact a young teenage African-American girl. Marvel has just revealed that it is relaunching Brian Bendis‘ Invincible Iron Man as part of the newest Marvel NOW! initiative, and it will be an Iron Man book featuring this new heroine in the lead.
So is Stark going to die in Civil War II? Don’t hold your breath, but whatever happens, for now at least, in his place will be Riri Williams, a recently introduced black 15-year-old girl and M.I.T. student. Many fans assumed that she would be the new War Machine — but nope, she’s becoming Iron Man himself. Herself. Themselves. Whatever. For our full story on the new Iron Man, watch today’s Nerdist News:
Viz Announces Several New Titles for 2016/2017
Although Anime Expo 2016 has now past, premiere manga publisher Viz Media has just announced a lot of new high profile acquisitions for the coming year, including Mobile Suit Gundam Thuderbolt, Dragon Ball Super, and Yu-Gi-Oh Arc V. There will also be omnibus editions for many of their classic titles. To check out the complete list, click on the following link: [Comics Beat]
The 2016 Harvey Awards Nominees Announced
The 2016 Harvey Awards, so named after the late Harvey Kurtzman, have just had the full nominees announced, with the release of the final ballot representing the input of the voters. The Harvey Awards recognize outstanding work in comics and sequential art. They will be presented September 3, 2016 in Baltimore, MD, in conjunction with the Baltimore Comic-Con. The Harvey Awards are voted on exclusively by comic-book creators, and are the only industry awards both nominated and selected by the full body of comic book professionals. Due to Overwhelming demand, the Great Lakes Avengers return
If you were reading comics in the early ’90s, you might fondly remember the Great Lakes Avengers, a group of extremely goofy superheroes who appeared in a handful of issues of the West Coast Avengers, mainly as a way of taking some of the heat off of everyone making fun of titular LA based heroes so gosh darn much. The team consisted of heroes with silly names and equally silly powers like Mr. Immortal, Flatman, Big Bertha, and Doorman. Now they are back in a new ongoing series, which will be written by Zac Gorman (Rick and Morty) and will be illustrated by Will Robson (Star-Lord).
So will this be a “grim n’ gritty” take on a goofball idea? Thankfully, it doesn’t sound like it is. In an exlusive interview here at Nerdist, Marvel’s Tom Breevort said “because the Avengers are so well known from the films, a more general audience can get the joke of [GLA] than they would ten years ago. It seems like this sort of thing might be able to find some traction in a way it couldn’t have before.” So relax, GLA fans…he said “joke”….it’s still going to be funny. Read our full exclusive announcement/interview at the following link: [Nerdist]

“The Citadel,” a Three-Year K’Nex Construction, Takes Balls on an Amazing Ride
K’nex is like the misunderstood stepchild in the construction toy family. Unfairly compared to LEGO and Mega Bloks—and categorized alongside them—K’nex really is a whole different thing, though some recent licensed sets with Lego-ish minifigs have blurred the lines a bit. Lego and its imitators, in the hands of experts, are primarily about architecture and design; K’nex is about engineering. And the individual known on YouTube as Shadowman is a masterful K’nex engineer, having used the plastic connection toy to build coin-sorters, card-shufflers, and a skee-ball machine.
But perhaps none are as impressive as the Citadel, which we first saw thanks to Laughing Squid: it’s an eight-foot tall contraption that took three years to make. Plastic balls are elevated to the top by a lift, and make their way down 17 different possible paths, where the encounter pendulums, carousels, loop inversions, centrifugal force cones, weight sensitive plates, and more route back to the bottom where they can start all over again. If you were a ball, this would be the best roller coaster ever. Since you’re not, it just makes for a hypnotic and compelling YouTube video.
Using some of the old-school K’nex figures (before the licensed ones got more LEGO-y), he’s even given the whole thing the feel of an operational factory, or theme-park ride, with staircases and controls for the tiny people to navigate the mechanical maze and ensure everything keeps running. Now, why they’d be making giant balls, we don’t know. Maybe they really, really like bubble gum. Or maybe they are just trying to entertain the race of giants who will stare at this video on their monitors, sufficiently distracted while the rest of the K’nex men take over the world. Hey, it’s plausible.
Should you ever tire of the video (unlikely), be sure to check out his gallery of stills at Flickr as well.
Is it time to give K’nex its long overdue props? Connect with us in comments below.

POKÉMON GO Is Available in the U.S., and Is Pretty Darn Cool
I’ve managed to tear myself away from my recently downloaded Pokémon Go in order to bring you the news that Pokémon Go is now available for download. After going public in Japan earlier this week, the game is now open to the American market via iOS and Android devices.
Despite early accounts asserting buggy design and frustrating microtransactions, I snagged the game within moments of hearing about its arrival in the States. Downloaders will be offered the opportunity to engage with the game by way of one of two memberships: one that syncs with the player’s Google account, and the other that
After being introduced to the Poké-world by a strapping new take on the franchise’s traditional expositive academic, Professor Willow, the player will be given the opportunity to customize his or her avatar before launching straight away into the game…after being assigned to allow access to your camera and GPS, that is.
In keeping with the inceptive entry in the Pokémon series, you’ll instantly be shouldered with the decision between Charmander, Squirtle, and the dangerously underappreciated Bulbasaur. But the novelty of Pokémon Go is your device’s camera transplants whatever Pokémon you find yourself in battle with to your immediate location—trying to catch a Squirtle on the city bus or a Charmander in your Laundromat is about as endearing as you might imagine, as is the fact that the game’s world map is an exact replica of your surrounding area—seeing a digitized version of the dog park down the block from my apartment was quite a trip.
Although it took me a few tries to get the hang of the game’s controls (I tossed a couple of spare Pokéballs at a projection of my roommate before snagging my leafy target), and probably longer than the average gamer to understand that your avatar’s movements sync up directly with yours (he or she moves up and down streets at the same pace you do, and can only advance on nearby Pokémon when within a few feet), the game quickly melded into second nature, allowing a simplified, expedient take on an old favorite. It may yet prove as glitch as rumored, but I’m enchanted enough to find out for myself. As should you!
And please, spread some love to the unloved—go for Bulbasaur. He’s the best.

Titan’s New TORCHWOOD Comic Will Debut at Comic-Con 2016
Torchwood fans, your long wait for new adventures is almost over. But it will be an even shorter wait if you’re coming to San Diego Comic-Con later this month!
Titan Comics has announced that the new ongoing Torchwood book will launch at SDCC 2016 with a convention exclusive cover of Captain Jack Harkness by veteran illustrator Tommy Lee Edwards. Additionally, Captain Jack himself, John Barrowman will be on hand to promote the new series, which will be written by Barrowman and his sister, Carole E. Barrowman.
The Barrowman siblings will be on a Torchwood panel on Saturday, July 23 at 3:30PM in room 5AB, where they will discuss their plans for the title. But fans can pick up the first issue at any time during the con at Titan’s booth # 5537.
Antonio Fuso and Pasquale Qualano are the artists of the Torchwood comic, which will be in continuity with the Big Finish Torchwood audio dramas. It’s not clear if Rex Matheson, the lone surviving new character from Torchwood: Miracle Day will return, but Captain Jack, Gwen Cooper, and Gwen’s husband, Rhys will all be back together in the comic which deals with some lingering tension between Jack and Gwen.
Fans who can’t make it out to San Diego will be able to pick up Torchwood #1 at comic stores everywhere starting Wednesday, August 3.
Are you excited about the return of Torchwood? Would you like to see classic adventures of Jack’s team before they got killed off? Let us know in the comment section below!

Inked Wednesday #95 – STAR WARS Sleeves, Sandman, and More
If you’re near Richmond, Virginia and looking for a tattoo artist, may I point you in the direction of Matt Brotka? He’s been tattooing since 1997, and sent me a couple of photos of his work—which led to me becoming immediately engrossed in his portfolio. Not all of his work is nerd-centric, but it is all colorful with subtle shading and vivid details. Please admire two galactic examples of Matt’s work with these Star Wars pieces:
The elaborate ink above featuring all the baddies was done on a leg.
The below art focuses on fan-favorite Boba Fett; you can see the twin suns of Tatooine in the background.
Hit up the gallery below to see more tattoos that are not related to Star Wars. You’ll see a Friday the 13th cover-up design, a beautiful cityscape with a robot reading, a gorgeous Sandman piece with Death and Morpheus, and a dinosaur. If your eyeballs long for more of Matt’s work—and they should—follow him on Instagram.
Would you like to see your body art in Inked Wednesday? That’s perfect because I’d love to include it. Send me pictures of your tattoos inspired by pop culture, science, whatever. Leave links to photos of your ink in the comments, tag or mention me on Instagram (no direct messages, please), or send pics to me on Twitter. Finally, you can email me at alratcliffe at yahoo dot com. Please let me know the name of your tattoo artist so I can include credit for him or her–you never know, maybe someone else will be amazed by your ink and will want to make an appointment with your artist.

This Norwegian Metal Cover of The FRIENDS Theme Song Will Eviscerate You
Friends worked so well as a TV show because the characters were like us, if we were a bit kookier and got into crazier hijinks. But they were relatable: They had friend problems, they went to work and didn’t always love it, they loved, they lost, and they really did feel like our friends.
But what if you and your friends were more into headbangingly intense Norwegian death metal? How would you relate to this young group of pals making their way through city life with nary a power chord or distortion pedal? Thankfully, Leo Moracchioli has filled that gap with an absolutely brutal cover of the show’s iconic theme song, and it rocks.
He couldn’t get the fountain for his video, but the couch and outdoor setting still lay the basic tableau that helps make the cover work. The main appeal, of course, is Moracchioli’s hilarious rendition of the track. The poppy melodies shine through just as well in this more intense style of guitar, and his gritty vocals admittedly lose their original charm, but take on an entirely different kind of appeal, one that appeases the more brooding among us.
Moracchioli is experienced at making these types of covers: He’s made a bunch of them in his day, including this surprisingly effective take on Adele’s “Hello.”
Check out the Friends theme song cover above, and let us know if you’ll be there when the rain starts to fall.
But what if FRIENDS took place in 2016?

STAR WARS Celebration Europe Will Have Live Streams Galore
It was one thing when Star Wars Celebration was in Anaheim last year—that was at least in the United States. But this year Star Wars Celebration is in London, which may as well be a galaxy far, far away. But don’t lose heart, brave rebels and resistance folk—and maybe even some of you Imperials—there will be a way for anybody who can’t make it to the event next to see what’s going on. No Jedi powers required, though, since they’re going to live stream just about the whole gosh darn thing!
StarWars.com announced on Wednesday that The Star Wars Show will from Friday, July 15, through Sunday, July 17, live stream the event with celebrity guests, interviews with Star Wars creators, and panels all weekend long, hosted by Andi Gutierrez and Peter Townley. They did this last year and almost all of the major panels were streamed. It’s like CNN but specifically for Star Wars.
Even though most of the specific panels and interviews will be posted to the site in the next couple of days (and we’ll tell you about them right here when they’re available), we do know that on Friday, July 15, at 11 a.m. ET/8 a.m. PT, there will be a big, huge, awesome Rogue One: A Star Wars Story panel with director Gareth Edwards and producer and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy live onstage along with “special guests” who are yet to be announced. One can assume it’ll be cast members, but we’ll see, won’t we?
Keep watching this space for all the updates about Star Wars Celebration Europe as they’re announced, because we’re real excited about it and will be chomping at the bit to share!
Let us know what you’re hoping will happen at Celebration in the comments below!

Sample Stars Hollow with a GILMORE GIRLS Subscription Box
I no longer need to be crowned Ice Cream Queen to make my Stars Hollow dreams come true. Instead all I need to do is subscribe to the brand new Gilmore Girls subscription box from LitCube, a company that already has a monthly subscription box for literary themed products. I’m not even kidding (I’m as serious as Babette is about her garden gnomes): Hello Giggles brought Stars Hollow Monthly to our attention, and I’m still pinching myself.
Stars Hollow Monthly is on the scene just in time for the Netflix revival debuting later this year. The shipment isn’t filled with pounds of coffee and Pop-Tarts as you might expect, though. The folks at LitCube curate 3-5 products inspired by Lorelai, Rory, and the quirky town they call home. They define their interpretation of “inspired by” as “items that relate to, are inspired by, or are artistic renderings of the show and its characters.” It could include housewares, fashion accessories, or maybe t-shirts. A few photos courtesy of LitCube and Ally:

I need that purse like I need air.
You can place your order for the Stars Hollow monthly box and see more photos of sample items at LitCube. Subscriptions are closed for the August shipment, but you can visit the site on July 24 to order the September box.
Will you be signing up for the Gilmore Girls subscription box? Talk to me in the comments!

THE PUNISHER #3, BATMAN #2, FUTURE QUEST #2, and More from The Pull List
Look: some weeks, there are just too many good comics. Some days, it feels like your pull list could possibly make your rent check bounce. This is one of those weeks. Prepare yourself, Wednesday Warriors, for this week is indeed a mighty one. We’ll highlight some choice books, but take a look at the complete list below and be ready to drain the ol’ bank account. Who needs food when you have comics though, right?
THE PUNISHER #3

The Punisher #3 from Marvel Comics
Written By: Becky Cloonan
Art By: Steve Dillon
Colors By: Frank Martin
Letters By: VC’s Joe Sabino
Becky Cloonan and Steve Dillon are so in sync it’s scary. Their Punisher is quickly becoming one of the best takes on the character in years, and it’s because they are simply sticking to their guns, so to speak. No frills, just straight up Punisher action—which is exactly what The Punisher should be. Cloonan brings a bleak darkness to the series while Dillon is busy producing some of the best pages he’s ever done. Seriously. Dillon is at the top of his game here, and it all looks amazing. Frank Martin’s colors are the icing on the bloody, bloody cake that is The Punisher. I sincerely hope this series never ends.
BATMAN #2

Batman #2 From DC Comics
Written By: Tom King
Art By: David Finch, Matt Banning, and Danny Miki
Colors By: Jordie Bellaire
Letters By: John Workman
This series moves fast. Snyder and Capullo were all about the slow burn, the seeds being planted and allowed to grow over time. Tom King and David Finch are like “screw that, crank this thing to eleven.” We get hardly any backstory on these Gotham heroes, but it’s clear what Batman knows. He doesn’t trust anybody (cause he’s Batman), and he’s not about to give in to two dweebs who named themselves after the city they are protecting. King’s script is tight and light; he lets Finch do his thing and the comic is better for it. With Matt Banning and Danny Miki inking and Jordie Bellaie coloring, Finch’s Batman looks the best he’s ever looked.
FUTURE QUEST #2

Future Quest #2 from DC Comics
Written By: Jeff Parker
Art By: Evan Shaner, Ron Randall, and Jonathan Case
Colors By: Jordie Bellaire
Letters By: Dave Lanphear
If you were a fan of these old Hanna-Barbera cartoons, Future Quest will please you to no end. If you’ve never had the pleasure of watching those old classics, fear not, because Parker, Shaner, and crew have crafted one amazing superhero comic here. This issue sees the introduction of more characters, and shows us exactly why Space Ghost ended up facing off with Johnny Quest at the end of the last issue. Evan Shaner is joined here by Ron Randall and Jonathan Case, both of whom have styles that fit the book much more than Steve Rude did in issue one. Don’t get me wrong, Steve Rude is amazing, but drastically different from Shaner. This issue has a better flow thanks to artists that all seem to be on the same page (not literally). Also, more Jordie Bellaire amazingness.
THE FIX #4

The Fix #4 from Image Comics
Written By: Nick Spencer
Art By: Steve Lieber
Colors By: Ryan Hill
Letters By: Nic J Shaw
Considering that fact that every issue of The Fix sells out and goes into multiple printings — last I checked issue one was on its 33rd printing — it’s probably a waste of time for me to tell you that this comic series is amazing and you should buy it. You probably are buying it, that’s why it keeps selling out, right? If, by some small chance you are not purchasing this fine, fine comic book every month, let’s rectify that now. Consider this an intervention: We’ve gathered here because we love you and we want you to know that not buying The Fix is not only hurting you, it’s hurting us, too. Look at your mom! She’s crying her eyes out! Anyway. Steve Lieber and Nick “Hail Hydra” Spencer are amazing and this is probably going to be the biggest book series since Harry Potter.
Okay, that’s it for us this week. Check out the complete list below and let us know what your pull list looks like in the comments!

Studio Ghibli’s Soot Sprites Inspired a Pitch Black Hamburger
You’d be hard-pressed to find a situation in which I’d eat a charcoal black burger. And I’m not simply referring to a well done, burnt to a crisp patty—I could get behind that, I guess—I’m talking bun, toppings, the whole shebang. Put such a burger in front of my face and I’m liable to leave the table. Unless, of course, it’s the official hamburger of Studio Ghibli. In that case, yeah I’d dine.
Meet the Makkuro Burger, or “Pitch Black” Burger, a hamburger whose toppings are blackened by bamboo charcoal. The sandwich is named after the Makkuro Kurosuke (soot sprites) found in several Studio Ghibli films, most notably Miyazaki’s classic, My Neighbor Totoro.
From July 7 – September 11, Tokyo’s aptly named observation deck, Tokyo City View, will host a Studio Ghibli art exhibit, and the collaboration has inspired the venue’s restaurant to serve Ghibli appropriate fare. In addition to this questionable looking burger, the menu will also include the poached eggs on toast featured in Castle in the Sky—as Kotaku reports.
The menu is just the latest effort aimed at fans of the beloved animation house. In May, Japan’s Studio Ghibli Museum announced the “Ride the Catbus to the Ghibli Woods” exhibit, offering would-be passengers of all sizes the opportunity to board that indelible Totoro feline. Additionally, there’s a VR Studio Ghibli experience, a forthcoming 2D Platformer, and a Castle in the Sky theme park.
The merger of our world and that of the magical Studio Ghibli is almost complete, and now you can even eat its food. But would you throw back one of these pitch black burgers? What if you were aboard the Catbus? Let us know in the comments below.
