Music Dispatch: You and Edward Norton Can Watch Radiohead Live Together
Did your friends bail on you when Radiohead tickets went on sale? Well, now you can get Radiohead tickets and a friend to see them with. Edward Norton is looking for you. Yes, you. Before you run off in a hurry to win, stick around to hear about the Pearl Jam and Soundgarden supergroup Temple of the Dog’s return, Third Eye Blind’s epic prank, Bright Eyes’ gorgeous box disk set, and Ke$ha’s long-awaited return to the scene.
Next week, Radiohead play Madison Square Garden on July 26. The show sold out almost immediately, so don’t be upset if you can’t go—pretty much everyone can’t. One person who did get tickets is Edward Norton, but it turns out he’s looking for a future friend to join him. The Incredible Hulk and Fight Club star posted a contest on Crowdrise (a fundraising website he co-founded) where you can win roundtrip airfare to New York, two nights in a hotel, two VIP tickets to the MSG show with Norton and pals, and a signed limited edition A Moon Shaped Pool vinyl box set, in addition to the backstage meet-and-greet. To enter the contest, you have to donate at least $10 to Conservation International, an organization that “is helping to build a healthier, more prosperous and more productive planet.” Yeah, let that all soak in. The contest ends Thursday at 5 P EST, though, so make sure to hurry and donate. [Pitchfork]
Remember that epic supergroup Temple of the Dog that was barely around for two years? Members of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden formed it in 1990 to release some harder material. Their only release, the 1991 album of the same name as their handle, did very well, but they never toured behind it. Now, a whopping 25 years later, they’ve decided to let those songs ring out live. That’s right. Temple of the Dog are going on tour this fall and play five cities. Tickets will go fast, so quickly make your way here to find the tour dates and see how you can snag tickets. [Pitchfork]
Turns out ’90s alt-rock radio stars Third Eye Blind are more relevant that you think. The group played a charity show in Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Tuesday night. When they found out many Republican National Convention attendees would be present, they rearranged their setlist. Third Eye Blind scrapped the hits. Instead, frontman Stephan Jenkins continually rallied against the GOP, asked the crowd to “raise your hand if you believe in science,” and told a story about their gay friend and the importance of LGBT equality. Ultimately, the band launched into the only hit of their set, “Jumper,” which is about a gay man taking his life from the result of LGBT bullying. Trolling in the face of politics has never been so bold. Watch some footage from the set above. [Rolling Stone]

For every type of sadness, there’s a Bright Eyes song to match. Now you can have the best rainbow of emotion on vinyl. Bright Eyes announced a new box set is on the way called The Studio Albums 2000-2011 which, as the title suggests, sees six of their records from that time span in a special, remastered, repackaged edition on vinyl and CD via Saddle Creek. That means 2000’s Fevers and Mirrors, 2002’s Lifted, or, The Story Is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground, 2005’s I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning and Digital Ash in a Digital Urn, 2007’s Cassadaga, and 2011’s The People’s Key are all a part of it. Best of all, it comes with special photo prints and an essay by the guy who founded Team Love Records with Conor Oberst. Pre-orders can be made now. [Pitchfork]

If you fight for your life, chances are you’ll win. Ke$ha didn’t give up in court after multiple years of battling Dr. Luke in a rape allegation suit. Now, she’s finally ready to reveal new music to her fans via an intimate tour this August. The seven-stop tour sees her and “the Creepies” hitting the road with more “Dirty rock & roll and country music.” According to her, it’s a “creepy creation.” No word on what that means yet, but the odds are in your favor that seeing one of these shows will stick in your memory for a long time. See you back here on Friday for another Music Dispatch!

MR. ROBOT Recap: Kernal Panic
Editor’s note: This post contains spoilers for USA’s show Mr. Robot. Read at your own risk.
If there’s one thing that’s been made abundantly clear about Elliot’s journey in Mr. Robot thus far, it’s that the character has reached his breaking point. Now that he’s aware of the dissociated monkey on his back (a.k.a. Mr. Robot), he’ll do anything to shut him out. Unfortunately for Elliot, things aren’t that simple. When we caught up with the troubled protagonist last week, he was struggling to keep his inner demon in, which he thought he had mastered by sticking to a strict schedule. Of course, it wasn’t enough and led him down a much darker, drug-filled path this week.
Yes, Elliot is back on drugs, but as he pointed out to the very judgy Mr. Robot, it has nothing to do with his morphine addiction. This time, he’s snagged some Adderall from his buddy Leon (damn it, Leon, we thought we liked you) and started popping them like Tic-Tacs. It’s frightening to see Elliot resort to overdosing on a prescription drug just to get rid of the unwanted voice inside his head, but it happened and didn’t exactly provide the relief he was seeking.
In fact, it made it worse. As a way to cement his place in Elliot’s mind, Mr. Robot unleashed a wicked hallucination that still makes my skin crawl. In short, men in black suits showed up immediately after Elliot took the drugs, stuffed him in a van, and delivered him to a warehouse. Once there, he was bound to a chair while cement was funneled into his mouth. In an instant, the delusion broke and Elliot found himself vomiting, with Mr. Robot at his side, telling him to get it all out. Thus, the control Elliot was seeking was forcefully ripped away by his alter-ego. Elliot, however, was not willing to back down and defiantly consumed the vomit-covered pills and declared that he wouldn’t be owned.
Three days later, Elliot is feeling no pain, and hasn’t slept since he took the pills. According to him, he’s up to 200 mg, and is finally aware of his surroundings, focused… and completely manic. He actually engaged in conversation with Leon (which scared the crap out of Leon), and way too enthused about basketball. But that didn’t last long. Elliot broke the fourth wall to ask viewers whether they were buying any of this. By the fifth day without sleep, he was hallucinating girls in Monopoly Man masks, and was in full-on panic mode. He finally hit Kernal Panic, which he defined at the beginning of the episode as an internal fatal error from which a system can’t safely recover.
After another mysterious code (quick, somebody find out if 3448075.307991 means anything) popped up on screen, Elliot headed to his church group and spewed his thoughts over the un-suspecting attendees. To sum it up, he ranted about how organized religion was created to control its followers, and put power into the leaders’ hands. This goes hand in hand with Elliot’s constant comparison of Mr. Robot to a god who is trying to control him. After realizing he said that all out loud, Elliot trashed his journal and left the building.
The journal wasn’t gone for long, however, as Ray found Elliot in the diner and returned it. We saw another layer to Ray (who was introduced last week) tonight and are still trying to process it. In his scenes with Elliot, he opened up about losing his wife, and provided him a shoulder to lean on (very much like a social worker). But there’s more to him than we originally thought. In another scene, he was trying to get a guy to take advantage of the hack to empty the money from the accounts while the bank’s site is down. Based on his apparent distaste for the man’s treatment, we’re assuming his involvement has something to do with the conversation Elliot couldn’t remember having with him. Did Elliot recruit him? My guess is: probably. He seems like a nice enough guy that wouldn’t be involved in something like this.
Speaking of things Elliot can’t remember, we still don’t know what happened to Tyrell. Towards the beginning of the episode, before the overdose incident, Elliot answered what we assumed was Tyrell’s phone call. The jury’s still out on whether he was actually talking to Tyrell, but something tells me he was. Having Mr. Robot mess with Elliot’s mind to make him think he wasn’t really talking to him is too simple. That said, we won’t really know more until he shows up.
As Elliot’s life continues to crumble, so does the outside world. Angela (who is working at ECorp) was handed evidence against two colleagues who had a hand in the cover-up involving her mother’s (and Elliot’s father’s) death. Price gives it to her after treating her to a fancy dinner with the two seemingly good men. But with the information, Price planted a kernal of doubt in her mind, telling her that if she removes emotion from the situation she’ll be fine. As he pointed out, good men are capable of extraordinary things (both good and bad). It’s up to Angela to decide whether she wants to leave her emotion at the door and destroy their lives.
Our other leading lady, Darlene, is dealing with another problem. Early on in the episode, Romero was murdered, which raised FSociety members’ fears that the Dark Army might be responsible, and is picking them off one by one. After assuring Mobley and Trenton that the other group isn’t involved, the other two start to worry that Elliot secretly made a deal with White Rose (which we know he did), and Darlene is in cahoots with him.
Unfortunately, Romero’s death also led to newcomer FBI Agent Dominique DiPierro (portrayed by Grace Gummer) locating the FSociety arcade headquarters. Up until she found the address—which was included on a poster for the “End of the World” party—the hideout was completely off the map. Now that she’s found it, and is on the right trail, things aren’t looking good for the hackers.
With Tyrell’s whereabouts still unknown, we’re terrified to see what Dominique finds in the arcade. Will it be Tyrell’s dead body? Will it be evidence leading back to Elliot? Who knows, but we’ll be on the edge of our seats until we find out.

Skateboarding Cat Is Living Its Best, Chill Life
So far 2016 has been…what’s the right word…exhausting. I think the phrase the kids use is that this year has “no chill.” So why don’t we take a few seconds and get away from all of the terribleness going on and enjoy something that really does have some chill, something that is silly and unimportant in the best way? How about a video of a cat riding a skateboard all on its own?
This video of Boomer the skateboarding cat was posted by the Youtube channel CATMANTOO, which is dedicated to showing “that cats are smart and teachable.” This video proves they are definitely trainable and intelligent enough to get them to cruise along the coast on their very own board, soaking in the rays and sea breeze like they don’t have a care in the world (which they don’t because they are cats, and cats only live their best nine lives).
This isn’t the first cat they’ve trained to do this, though. In the past they’ve shared videos of their other cat, Didga, also going out for a spin. And since Boomer was such a pleasant distraction, let’s enjoy one of Didga’s rides as well.
Alright, this is just what we need. So let’s just watch the cats do other things too and call this a good day.
Yeah, that’s the stuff. But just in case you still don’t feel better about the universe here’s one more, from their introduction of kitten Boomer to their family.
This stupid year might have no chill, but cats always do.

This Disk Drive GAME OF THRONES Theme Song Is Dark and Full of Read Errors
Some people can create entire worlds with a paintbrush. Others can release the beauty hiding within blocks of clay. Pen and paper can become epic in illustration or written word and piles of scrap metal can become modern art. It’s truly amazing when someone can look at something ordinary, something that would otherwise be obsolete junk, and see the extraordinary possibilities within. That’s why this epic Game of Thrones theme reproduced with disk drives absolutely blows our minds.
This delightfully retro-tech floppy disk drive tune was brought to our attention from a recent post on Gizmodo and was created by YouTube’s Paweł Zadrożniak. The bevy of electronic instruments all working together in musical harmony goes by the name “The Floppotron” and has already given us versions of various Star Wars songs, “Smells like Teen Spirit” and the theme song to Hawaii Five-O.
It’s hard enough for us to wrap our heads around videos that use only a few drives to accomplish low-tech versions of songs, so you can imagine seeing dozens of drives and what appear to be gutted scanners playing the GoT theme so beautifully pretty much melts our brains. Should you be so inclined to know the magic behind such a cool use of otherwise obsolete tech, Paweł goes into some extensive detail on how the Floppotron was constructed and the interesting ways in how it works on his website.
What do you think of this rendition of the GoT theme? What songs would you like to hear next? Let’s discuss in the comments below!

Some of Our Favorites From Our Early Peek at the Comic-Con Floor
Costumes, comics, collectibles, cartoons, and soon enough total chaos… but before the massive crush of citizens come crashing through the doors of this years Comic-Con in San Diego, I got a chance to get an early sneak preview at a few of the booths setting up shop this year. I can safely say, your wallet is in the best and worst kind of danger. So here’s just a few of the best things I saw. (…when I wasn’t trying to avoid being run over by a forklift, that is, since the entire floor is set up following the rules of writing an important paper in college, where you’re cramming to get it all done minutes before it’s due to be turned in.)
Sideshow Collectibles
Which version of the Ninja Turtles do you like the most? Of all the Star Wars villains, which one deserves a prime spot in your house? How about a super high quality First Order Trooper costume? Get ready to gawk at the high-end collectibles on display from Sideshow, because it’s basically a mini-museum through the aisles of nerd heaven, except you can actually take these pieces back with you if want to pony up (and you will, way more than you probably can). I mean, you know they’re good when it makes you look fondly upon Batman v Superman.
And none of that includes the pieces from Hot Toys, which you’ll have to wait until later to see. Sorry! But don’t worry, I had a great time.
Nickelodeon
We’ve already told you about all of the great stuff Nick has planned for their booth this year, but until you actually see the stoop from Hey Arnold! and the giant nose from Double Dare up-close you have no idea just how much nostalgia you are capable of feeling. Oh, and those items they have for sale? They look better in person.
LEGO
Can I interest you in a 26-thousand brick Captain America (complete with an imperfect fleck of green in his eye) that took 400 hours to make? Or a Gal Gadot Wonder Woman that needed 317 hours and 22 thousand bricks? Those of you bringing your kids will want to head here, because the LEGO booth is kid friendly, and your young’n will be able to help build a full Batman on Thursday, Batgirl on Friday, or if yours is a little scamp go by on Saturday and help build The Joker.
IDW Publishing
If you plan on grabbing one of their Comic-Con exclusive covers (oh, hello giant The Empire Strikes Back Artist’s Edition book, I didn’t need food for the rest of the month, I’ll just live off of your energy), don’t delay, because their primo-items won’t last long. But, because comics have always been such a force for good, keep an eye out for Congressman and Civil Rights hero John Lewis, who will be there to march through the convention once again.
If you can’t wait for Luke Cage, you’ll not only be able to see the entire cast together for the first time ever, but getting an autograph signing. Marvel was coy with us (that’s what happens when you require zero press), but we got the impression something big will happen with Doctor Strange, so keep your eyes and ears open. Especially when they finally reveal their giant, one ton (not hyperbole, it weighs an actual ton) Captain America statue. No pictures for you there (I pleaded to let them just show me, but no dice), but I can tell you their 1/4th scale ($3000) and 1/12th scale replicas ($350 tonight during the preview, $400 the rest of the weekend) will be big hits.
BOOM! Studios
Please allow me a brief indulgence, because their exclusive, one page comics from their new partnership with the WWE are right in my wheelhouse. Blind bags with one if them will run you five dollars, and John Cena, Sasha Banks, The New Day (who will be making an appearance there this weekend), Stone Cold Steve Austin, and Triple HHH will only have about 300 each, but the sixth, the Undertaker, will only have somewhere around 25. So if you don’t get one of the Dead Man you probably won’t rest in peace. For you non-wrestling fans exclusive Power Rangers comics, as well an anniversary Labyrinth comic were some of the other standouts.
DC
Which Wonder Woman costume do you want to see? Gal Gadot’s amazing one from her upcoming solo film? Or Lynda Carter’s original, blue-faded-to-purple ensemble? How about the costumes from Suicide Squad? (Oh man, The Joker’s purple snake jacket had me debating a life of crime). It wasn’t set up yet, but you’ll also have a chance to play their new VR game where you get. to. be. Batman.
That’s just a little of what we saw, but with the opening night preview just a few hours away we wanted you to be ask excited as we are.
Now how do we get tickets for the big premiere of Star Trek Beyond?
What are you most excited for at this year’s Comic-Con? Tell us in the comments below.
BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Gets a Season 11 Comic, Plus a New Adult Coloring Book
San Diego Comic-Con is finally here, and with it comes a ton of news in today’s Comics Relief. Today’s edition kicks off with the announcement concerning the further adventures of Sunnydale High’s Class Protector. Read on for all the details…
Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season 11 and Adult Coloring Book Announced
Buffy the Vampire Slayer will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of its debut on the WB network next year, and in anticipation of the big event, Dark Horse Comics is launching Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Season 11. This will be the fourth “season” of the show produced exclusively for comics, and executive produced by TV series creator Joss Whedon.
The Buffy: Season 10 creative team of writer Christos Gage and artist Rebekah Isaacs will return, with Buffy and the Scoobies still living in San Francisco, with Buffy and the vampire Spike still a happy demon-hunting couple… at least for now. Willow, Xander, and Dawn are still around, and yes, Giles is still trapped in the body of a 13-year-old. Unlike previous Buffy seasons, which ended with an apocalypse, this season will start with one.
Also coming soon from Dark Horse is the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Adult Coloring Book. The new book will showcase some 45 original black-and-white illustrations from series artists like Rebekah Isaacs, Georges Jeanty, and others, in pages that feature characters from the Buffy and Angel storylines, including both the series’ heroes and villains. The 96-page book will set you back $14.99, and is scheduled to hit this October. Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 11 #1 is set to hit on November 23rd. [ USA Today, CBR]
DC Comics Adult Coloring Books Coming from Insight
Speaking of adult coloring books, Insight Editions is releasing a DC Comics themed adult coloring book on July 26, featuring most of the publisher’s iconic characters, drawn by some of their most renowned artists. Additionally, if you happen to be at Comic-Con in San Diego this week, Insight Editions will be hosting a live coloring demonstration in booth #1703 with DC colorist Alex Sinclair, on Saturday from 10:30am to 12pm. Learn how to finally color inside the lines for once. Better late than never.
‘70s Icons Wonder Woman and the Bionic Woman finally team up
They were the two big feminist icons of ’70s television, who kicked ass on a weekly basis and inspired little girls everywhere. Now, Lynda Carter’s Wonder Woman and Lindsay Wagner’s Bionic Woman will meet at last, in a crossover event comic from Dynamite and DC Comics, from writer and comics historian Andy Mangels.
Joseph Rybandt, the executive editor of Dynamite, said “He (Mangels) was passionate about the project and a talent we had not previously worked with. Andy is a super Wonder Woman fan and a super Bionic Woman fan.” No date has been given for the release of this comic yet, but expect to hear more about this one very soon. [New York Times, Comics Alliance]
Hillary Clinton Gets A Little Faith…Valiant Comics’ Faith That Is
Speaking of feminist heroines, plus-size super heroine Faith has been a real hit this year over at Valiant Comics, receiving her own ongoing series recently. Now, none other than Democratic nominee for POTUS Hillary Clinton is going to be making an appearance in this fall’s Faith issue #5. The Clinton story is coming from veteran writer Louise Simonson, with art by Pere Perez.
In an interview, Valiant editor Tom Brennan explained the thinking behind the guest appearance in the series, saying, “This is a historic candidacy with Clinton and we just thought, [this is] something comics [have] done many times before, and with [Valiant] starting to come into our own as a company, we wanted to join that proud tradition” Faith issue #5 hits in November. [Hollywood Reporter]
IDW Announces Star Trek: Boldy Go
IDW’s current Star Trek series, which features the adventures of the Enterprise crew from the Kelvin timeline, is ending with issue #60. But Captain Kirk and his crew will be back in a new series right on its heels, titled Star Trek: Boldy Go, which takes place after the events of Star Trek Beyond. This fall, writer Mike Johnson and artist Tony Shasteen will return to take the crew further than ever before.
In an interview, writer Mike Johnson said, “Boldly Go is gonna be more of a serialized story, less of the bottled episodes and more of an ongoing story, for lack of a better word. We’re getting away from the sort of paradigm of you roll up to a planet, something weird happens, [you] get in trouble, you’ve got to the solve the problem. This is more throwing all of the characters into new situations. They’re not all going to be together. We’re going to follow multiple threads of the characters as they each encounter new situations.” Star Trek: Boldly Go #1 goes on sale in October. [CBR]
Rock Legends Kiss Get New Series From Dynamite
That classic rock band that refuses to die is coming to comics soon. Nope, not the Rolling Stones, I’m talking about Kiss, who once starred in a series of comics from Marvel way back in the ’70s. Now the rock group is coming to Dynamite Entertainment, in a new “dark sci-fi series” written by Amy Chu (Poison Ivy) and illustrated by Kewber Baal (Army of Darkness: Furious Road). The new Kiss series will be set “in a world without sun and a world without heroes, where four young friends embark on a dangerous mission – to uncover the truth about the mysterious Council of Elders and their underground home, the city of Blackwell. But first they need some help from the past…”
Are Kiss the four young friends, or the help from the past?? We’ll have to wait and see. Issue #1 of Kiss will feature a whopping 10 covers. The four covers highlighting a different members of the band will be illustrated by artist Goni Montes. Other artists will contribute additional covers, while other cover editions include a photo variant, a “Demon” Emoji variant, and even a coloring book cover. Kiss #1 is due sometime in November. Neil Gaiman’s INTERWORLD Getting a TV Series from HAMILTON Producer
Neil Gaiman‘s novels have a new clout in the world of adaptation, and with American Gods on its way to the small screen, his other properties are being snapped up left and right. Just today, Entertainment Weekly announced that Universal Cable Productions, a production studio owned by NBCUniversal, will adapt InterWorld into a TV series, in partnership with Hamilton producer Jeffrey Seller and his partner Flody Suarez.
InterWorld was published in 2007 by Gaiman and Michael Reaves by EOS, a division of Harper Collins. The story follows Joey Harker, a teenager from the South, who discovers he is part of a multidimensional universe and must work with his other dimension selves to save the world from the clash of magic and science. The young adult novel is a great example of fantasy and science fiction coming together to tell great stories and inspire new readers to become passionate about storytelling.
Fans of Nerdist are probably already aware that Gaiman and all of his writing partners are spectacular storytellers, but you may be less familiar with the prowess of the producing partners that these two are getting in Hamilton producers Seller and Suarez. The Broadway show has taken the nation so by storm that tickets sell on scalping sites for triple and sometimes quadruple the price that you could get them through Ticketmaster if you hit it just right.
While you may be incredibly excited to see American Gods in all the epically saturated glory that Bryan Fuller will give it, some of the best adaptations of Gaiman’s work have been what one can only describe as minimalist. Seriously if you’ve never listened to the audio play of Neverwhere, I insist you go right out and download it right now. Hamilton is a show with masterful storytelling, passionate performances, and minimal backdrops. It asks the question, just what will we get in this novel adaptation from these producers? I hope it’s something magical.
If you’re a fan of InterWorld I hope that you will tell us what you can’t wait to see on the screen in the comments below!

The Pull List: BLACK HAMMER #1, LAZARUS #23, BLACK WIDOW #5, and More
Happy SDCC, Wednesday Warriors! If you are not braving the convention this year then you’ll have plenty of time to head to the ol’ comic shop and pick up some mighty fine floppies. Before you head to the shop, arm yourself with a few recommendations, and for you big spenders out there, we also have a complete list of this week’s releases. Narrowing down our list this week was no easy task, there are an insane amount of great comics being released. We’re going broke here, folks.
BLACK HAMMER #1

Black Hammer #1 from Dark Horse Comics
Written By: Jeff Lemire
Art By: Dean Ormston
Colors By: Dave Stewart
Letters By: Todd Klein
Black Hammer is a combination of two things Jeff Lemire does very, very well. It’s a small town story about simple, rural people living seemingly simple lives, and it’s also an epic superhero adventure..or, at least, it’s the aftermath of an epic superhero adventure. It’s a sad, slow first issue—and that’s complimentary—filled with fully realized characters who seem lost, scarred, and broken. It has the sullen beauty of a funeral, the dedicated detail of a wake. Dean Ormston’s art works wonderfully for this story. His line work would fit perfectly in the world of Hellboy or BPRD, he has a hard edge to every panel and every character. Then there’s Dave Stewart, a man who was recently proved to actually be a sorcerer who enchants every book he touches with glorious and unparalleled color work. Black Hammer #1 does everything the first issue of a comic book should, not least of all leaving us eager for that second issue.
BETTY & VERONICA #1

Betty & Veronica #1 from Archie Comicsw
Written By: Adam Hughes
Art By: Adam Hughes
Colors By: Jose Villarrubia
Letters By: Jack Morelli
We already did a full review of Betty & Veronica #1, so we won’t spend a ton of time on it here, except to say you really, really need to be reading the new Archie comics. Betty & Veronica #1 is a showcase for everything the publisher is doing right; it’s fun, funny, and filled with pitch perfect artwork. Plus, we rarely get Adam Hughes’ interiors, so such an event should be honored with the purchase of this comic. We’re adding everything Archie is putting out to our pull list, and Betty & Veronica is no exception.
WEIRD DETECTIVE #2

Weird Detective #2 from Dark Horse Comics
Written By: Fred Van Lente
Art By: Guiu Vilanova
Colors By: Mauricio Wallace
Letters By: Nate Piekos of Blambot
This series is so wonderfully deranged, we can’t help but adore it. It’s the Cthulhu Mythos meets Law & Order meets weird cat jokes. It’s beautifully strange and shifts dramatically from humor to horror, oftentimes within a single page. Fred Van Lante and Guiu Vilanova keep you guessing on every page; just when you think you have it sorted on who is the real villain, the floor drops out and there’s a Lovecraftian monster waiting to consume you. Sebastian Greene just might be our favorite new comic character, the perfect lead to a book titled Weird Detective. This second issue only digs you deeper into the mystery, but man oh man does it leave you ready for more. Van Lente shines when he’s making twisted jokes and Vilanova excels at drawing monsters and nightmares, so these two are the perfect pair for the strange world that is Weird Detective. We’ll take issue three now, please.
LAZARUS #23

Lazarus #23 from Image Comics
Written By: Greg Rucka
Art By: Michael Lark and Tyler Boss
Colors By: Santi Arcas
Letters By: Jodi Wynne
Lazarus never disappoints. Twenty-three issues in and it’s still as engaging as ever. This issue serves as a reminder that when it comes to action, Michael Lark is bloody brilliant. There’s plenty of the usual backstabbing, planning, and scheming within the Carlyle family in these pages, but the real highlight is an extended sword fight that starts of vicious and ends with insane brutality. Lark works his magic in this scene, delivering each stab, kick, and sickening impact with visceral precision. Rucka lets the story unfold with his typical care and ease, seeding the big events of the future while letting the emotional wreckage of the past haunt our characters. Lazarus #23 is a real treat, a treat wrapped up in a bloody, sword-wielding package and delivered to your family’s doorstep as a grim warning of what lurks in the future.
BLACK WIDOW #5

Black Widow #5 from Marvel Comics
Written By: Chris Samnee and Mark Waid
Art By: Chris Samnee
Colors By: Matthew Wilson
Letters By: VC’s Joe Caramagna
We toss around the word “perfect” a lot when talking about comics around here, and yeah, it’s usually hyperbole. It’s typically interchangeable with “really, really great” for us, because that’s just how we roll. The thing is, when we say Black Widow is freaking perfect, we literally mean perfect. It’s flawless. Samnee’s storytelling is unreal, the sort of thing that makes you believe in a higher power. Surely, no one man can render such perfect comic booking without some sort of divine intervention, right? Black Widow #5 has perfect pacing, perfect coloring from Matthew Wilson, razor sharp dialogue, and the energetic and graceful visuals in modern comics. Waid, Samnee, Wilson, and Caramagna are the 1980 Winter Olypmic’s US Hockey Team of Comics. They are the Miracle on Ice, but instead of ice, comic books. We’re reaching with this metaphor, but the point is that Black Widow is perfection.

Home Geekonomics: Star Trek
Home Geekonomics is a series that features the best in geeky home decor, food, and DIY. Each week will focus on a specific fandom and highlight the best of geek for your home and everyday life.
This week Star Trek Beyond will make its debut at Comic-Con and whether you’re down in San Diego or watching the festivities from home, you can’t help but get into the Starfleet spirit.
These inventive projects will keep you busy bringing Star Trek into your home through easy to follow DIYs and hacks. Now if only we could create a working DIY a transporter in the garage…
DIY Comm Badges by Where’s My Dream Life
I love the idea of repurposing things you already have at home. Everyone has stacks of business cards lying around—who knew they’d make perfect Star Trek comm badges? A Sharpie and some scissors and you’re well on your way to creating a whole fleet of paper communicators.
Vulcan Phone Case by The Cheese Thief
People will definitely do a double take when they see you talking on the phone and catch a glance at your Vulcan ears. This would be a great DIY right before a convention. It’s casual cosplay, emphasis on the casual! All you need is a clear phone case and a printout of your favorite logical Vulcan.
Star Trek Welcome Mat by Our Nerd Home
Welcome all beings into your home with a DIY Star Trek welcome mat. Change an affordable mat into a glorious ode to the final frontier with just a template and some spray paint. Be a bastion of protection for any wayward Red Shirts that wind up on your doorstep.
Star Trek Nails by More Nail Polish
I am all about themed nail art and these lovely tips are made to reflect the crew of Star Trek the Next Generation. Beautifully done, the colors are dead on and require a steady hand. Hold on to something!
Star Trek Dress by Reanna Lily Designs
Using a regular McCall’s dress pattern this outfit is easily turned into a Star Trek uniform that’s a wonderful modern take on a classic. With just a little bit of color blocking you can achieve an everyday cosplay look that’s smart and fashionable.

An American Nintendo 64DD Actually Exists, And Somebody Found One
The 64DD is one of the few Nintendo consoles many gamers probably haven’t heard of, but that’s totally fair. It’s actually more of a console add-on than a standalone platform: As the name suggests, the magnetic disk drive attached to the bottom of the Nintendo 64 and was supposed to bring bigger games and Internet connectivity to the console. The peripheral was delayed for four years before seeing a Japanese release in 1999… which did not go well. Only 10 games were released before the plug was pulled on the flop of a project.
Unsurprisingly, the 64DD never made it to the United States, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t planned to arrive. YouTuber MetalJesusRocks bought himself a 64DD on craigslist, and it turns out that what he got was an American retail model of the game, with an English language boot screen and everything.
This, by the way, was thought to not even exist. Also interesting is that the copyright date on the bottom of the console is “1996, 1997,” years before the 64DD was released in Japan. Traditional Japanese 64DD peripherals have sold on eBay for hundreds, and even thousands, of dollars. Who knows what this means for the value of this one, except that it could probably fetch a few pretty pennies.
MetalJesusRocks also reached out to a then-Nintendo employee who worked on the 64DD, and he confirmed that this find is in fact an American retail unit. This 64DD also came with a blue prototype disk that his system won’t read, so let him know if you have any insight.
Watch MetalJesusRocks explain his find in the video above, and let us know in the comments if you wish the 64DD has made it to the American market.
