‘King Tide’ Washes Octopus into Miami Building, Frightens People on Toilets Everywhere
It’s common knowledge that due to human-made climate change, sea levels are rising. It’s a frightening prospect, which will likely lead to a lot of problems, including, apparently, a whole lot of sea life taking refuge in our sewer systems. If this sounds far-fetched, take a look at these recent photos posted by Miami resident Richard Conlin: They’re of an octopus that found its way into his parking garage, most likely from the drainage pipes below it.
The story of the octopus in the garage—which could/should(?) be a children’s book—comes via National Geographic. In the National Geographic article, the author notes that although the “king tide” (a colloquial term for especially high tides) was enhanced by this year’s supermoon, this is still one of “many issues the Miami area has faced as a result of rising sea levels.”
Genuinely frightening consequences of rising tides aside—which include underground saltwater potentially threatening the fresh water supply for 6 million Florida residents—sea creatures invading our sewage and drainage systems is still pretty scary. Hermes from Futurama illustrates one possible nightmare scenario perfectly:

Futurama gif curtesy of the Morbotron.
If you’re concerned with the health of the octopus found in Conlin’s garage (maybe you were hoping that it’d make an Inky-like escape), you can rest easy; the octopus was placed in a bucket by building security and returned to the ocean. Hopefully the next time it comes back, Miami will have new systems in place to combat the spread of sea life in their underground pipes. (Although changes to the sewer system will have to be cleared with any mutants who live down there, of course.)
What do you think about this octopus finding its way into a Miami garage? Are you worried about encountering some kind of tentacle the next time you find yourself on the porcelain throne? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Carrie Fisher’s STAR WARS Poetry is Better Than Any Leia/Han Fan Fiction
When legendary actress/author Carrie Fisher revealed that at the age of 19 she had an affair with a 33-year-old (and married) Harrison Ford on the set of the original Star Wars, I doubt any of us were all that shocked. Part of the reason being was because in the original Star Wars trilogy, the chemistry between Princess Leia and Han Solo was real and palpable. No wonder she wrote a bunch of sad teen poetry about it!
While our grandparents might have had Scarlet and Rhett in Gone With The Wind, Leia and Han was the epic screen romance for the modern era. To find out that romance had a basis in reality feels like information we all kind of instinctively knew. The revelation of the affair is part of Fisher’s newest book, The Princess Diarist, where the author writes about her own love/hate relationship with the sci-fi character that made her a feminist icon to generations of fans. And while the character of Leia Organa was this mature woman and a leader of armies, the reality was she was being played by a teenager with a crush on a sexy older man.
And what do teenage girls do usually do when in the midst of romantic angst? Poetry, baby! And Carrie Fisher sure wrote some lovelorn poems during the making of Star Wars, which (thanks to Vulture) can now be shared with everyone. There may have been years of Leia/Han fan fiction written out of the on-screen romance of the two characters, but the truth of the relationship is a hell of a lot more relatable than some cheesy “Fifty Shades of Wookiee” story found online. Here’s one sample:
Don’t offer me love
I seek disinterest and denial
Tenderness makes my skin crawl
Understanding is vile
When you offer me happiness
You offer too much
My ideal is a long-lasting longing
For someone whom I cannot touch.
Ok, that right there is actually totally worthy of Angela on My So-Called Life. I can almost see Carrie Fisher, still in Leia drag after a long day of filming, cinnamon bun rolls still on her head, smoking a cigarette in some British coffee house while writing all this down.
All snark aside, it’s really not bad, and you can see how this young actress found greater fame as a wordsmith in her adult years, both as an author and as a script doctor. Here’s one more Fisher poem from her time on Star Wars that’s brief and to the point, but I’m sure resonates with as many women today as it did back in 1977:
A woman’s place is in the home
Seated by the telephone
Men sow their wild oats
And women are sown.
And that right there, is one Carrie Fisher dropping the mic. Fisher’s new book The Princess Diarist is out now, and of course, we will see her as Leia Organa once more in Star Wars: Episode VIII, coming out next year.
Are you looking forward to all the behind the scenes stories on the making of Star Wars from Fisher’s new book? Let us know down below in the comments.

Michelle Yeoh Joins Cast of STAR TREK: DISCOVERY (Report)
We haven’t heard much news about the upcoming new Star Trek series set to hit CBS All Access next summer, Star Trek: Discovery, since it was announced that Bryan Fuller had sadly stepped down as series showrunner. Well, turn that frown upside-down because this time the news is amazing: actress Michelle Yeoh, known best for her roles in films like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and the Netflix series Marco Polo, has reportedly joined the cast in what is presumably the lead role (because I mean, c’mon: it’s Michelle Yeoh!).
The news actually came from Nicholas Meyer (via Coming Soon) who famously directed both Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, and is serving as a consulting producer on Discovery. While promoting the new Blu-ray for his classic film Time After Time, he said “I know Michelle Yeoh is in it,” which is as straight from the horse’s mouth as it comes. Although it remains unconfirmed, Michelle Yeoh’s role is more than likely the series’ lead, which had been previously described a female Lieutenant Commander who simply goes by the title “Number One.”
(Nerdist has reached out to CBS for comment but has not heard back at the time of publication—we will update this post as more is confirmed.)
Discovery will be the first Trek series for whom the main character won’t be the ship’s captain. Of course, it is also possible that Yeoh could be playing the Captain of the Discovery, which would make here the first female Captain on a Star Trek series since Voyager ended back in 2001. In any event, Yeoh will be the first Asian lead in a Star Trek show.
Although he won’t be the series showrunner anymore, Star Trek: Discovery is still being executive produced by Bryan Fuller, along with Gretchen Berg, Aaron Harberts, and Academy Award winner (and writer of Batman & Robin, let’s not forget) Akiva Goldsman. Originally set to debut in January of 2017, the series has now been delayed until summer of next year.
Are you as excited about Yeoh’s casting as we are? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

10 Characters We’d Like to See Lead the FANTASTIC BEASTS Sequels
Warning: This post contains spoilers for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, so don’t touch your keyboard’s portkey if you don’t wish to travel any further!
It would be a difficult task to have a Magizoologist as the main protagonist in five movies that span 19 monumental years in the history of the wizarding world, a period when one of the most dangerous Dark Wizards of all time threatened the safety of the entire planet. Which is why J.K. Rowling suggested she probably isn’t going to have Newt Scamander lead all four Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them sequels. But if Eddie Redmayne‘s Newt won’t be filling that role, who might be a compelling enough character to have at the center of the future installments?
It’s a notion Fantastic Beasts producer David Heyman confirmed in a chat with Cinemablend, noting that Newt Scamander would be at “the heart” of all the sequels. “I think he’ll be part—so will Tina, Queenie and Jacob—will be part of the next one,” he said.
This isn’t surprising news, considering what we know about the real villain of the movies, Gellert Grindelwald, and his history—how he terrorized Europe during the 1930s and 40s, before being defeated in 1945 by his former friend, Albus Dumbledore. The Fantastic Beasts movies will cover that exact time span, so keeping Newt as the main character throughout that entire period wouldn’t work, not without creating a history and place in it for Newt that would be entirely new, which might ring hollow with Harry Potter fans and feel forced with all audience goers.
But that means we need other characters to build these movies around, so here are some of our best bets at who might step into the lead roles of the future films—from the super obvious to the totally wild.
SMART MONEY
Albus Dumbledore
These movies will apparently end with him and Grindelwald’s famous duel, so at some point it seems reasonable to think that his reluctant journey into accepting that he was the only wizard capable of ending Grindelwald’s rise (he told Harry he avoided the confrontation for as long as possible) could and should take center stage at some point, even before their ultimate faceoff.
A young, conflicted Professor Dumbledore at the height of his powers would immediately have a connection with the Harry Potter audience, and would offer a compelling look at at the early life of someone we came to know and care about so much.
Tina and Queenie Goldstein
Tina’s role in the movies and Newt’s life are only going to get bigger (if you don’t know what happens between Tina and Newt you can look it up, but we’ll leave that spoiler out of here). She proved herself a worthy and important auror to MACUSA, which should boost her role in America’s larger than we expected role in dealing with Grindelwald.
That also means her protective and loving sister, the resourceful and lovable Queenie, could also take on a bigger part. We’re nine movies into the Harry Potter universe, and having a female lead (or leads) would offer a new and different—and dare we say it, necessary—dynamic to the story.
Seraphina Picquery
…Which is also why the head of the greatly compromised MACUSA is also a logical candidate to step into the lead role of one of the sequels. It was on her watch that Grindelwald infiltrated her very own office, and there’s no way she’ll avoid fallout from such a failure, one that risked the secrecy of the entire wizarding community.
Also, Ilvermorny, America’s revered wizarding school, seems primed to be a major location at some point in these movies, which means an American head of state will play an important part in what’s to come. The tough President Picquery would be a great character to base an entire film around.
WE WOULDN’T BET AGAINST THEM
Aberforth Dumbledore
Professor Dumbledore’s younger brother never truly forgave his brother for their younger sister Ariana’s death—which came about when the two brothers dueled against Grindelwald decades before the first film took place—but he also never stopped fighting for what was right, participating in both the great wars against Voldermort. A fringe character with a rich history and meaningful connections to the two men that this story will conclude with is exactly the type of character that would make for a compelling lead.
Gellert Grindelwald
This one’s sorta cheating since they’ve already revealed that he’ll be a major character in the next installment. But five movies is a long time to have things go well for the good guys, so we have to imagine at some point Fantastic Beasts will have their Empire Strikes Back installment (if not multiple ones), so could Johnny Depp’s Grindelwald anchor a movie, where we see the war from the other side?
There are hints that Grindelwald wasn’t as purely and needlessly evil as Voldermort, that he was more of a Machiavellian “the ends justify the means” type of Dark Wizard, who didn’t kill unless he felt it served his motto, “the greater good.” Maybe they cast a big name in the part just for this kind of leading role responsibility. Grindelwald’s life is infamous, but there is much of it to be filled in, and we’d love to see one of the films told from the other side to mix it up.
Credence Barebone
Of course, if the big bad Grindelwald can lead a movie, why not the possibly (definitely) still alive but not nearly actually evil Credence Barebones, the troubled Obscurial that threatened the secrecy of wizards everywhere?
Ezra Miller is talented enough to play a protagonist in a big time movie (we think he’s going to be great in The Flash), and Credence is troubled enough and sympathetic enough that seeing his changing role in the world and his path to self-acceptance would be a story worth telling.
LONG SHOTS
Bathilda Bagshot
Not only would it be fascinating to see these events through the eyes of a magical historian, but Bathilda herself is an important player in the life of Grindelwald, her great nephew. It was she who he went to live with in Godric’s Hollow, where his friendship with Albus Dumbledore forever changed the wizarding world.
A movie told from her perspective would be a totally unique angle to experience one of these stories from, with a built in and logical reason for her to be so close and informed about the larger goings on.
Mykew Gregorovitch
The famous wand maker that Grindelwald stole the Elder Wand from—one of the three items that make up the Deathly Hallows—Gregorovitch is a minor character in the Harry Potter world, but obviously one that was very important during this time period.
Rowling’s written histories about wand makers in America hint at them being important going forward in the franchise, and even though he is European no wand maker is more important to this story than the man who possessed the Elder Wand before Grindelwald.
So that’s our list. The only omission that hurt us personally was not including a young, badass Minerva McGonagall, but she was born in 1935, and would only be 10 years old when the fifth movie ends. So while we might see her make an appearance, we doubt she’ll play any kind of meaningful role, let alone be in a leading one.
With four more films, set in an era of the magical community that threatened to ruin the worlds of wizards and Muggles alike, the possibilities are endless and exciting, and that’s why these films are far too big to only be Newt’s story.
But even though all of these characters could make for fantastic leads, we wouldn’t mine if a Niffler showed up in all of them. Because when it comes to the “beasts” part of these movies, only so many of them can carry a film.
Who did we leave out? Which character do you want to see in a leading role in the sequels? Cast your answers in the comments section below.

Marvel and FROZEN-Themed Lands Coming to Hong Kong Disneyland
If you thought the news about the Iron Man Experience opening at Hong Kong Disneyland was big, then hold onto your arc reactor. Thanks to Oh My Disney, we know the company has announced the theme park has put together a proposed multi-year expansion (2018-2023) that includes a whole lotta revamping, including a whole Marvel-themed land. Please let the hype sink in by examining this concept art:
With Marvel inspired meet and greets and attractions popping up in the United States Disney parks, it was only a matter of time before a whole land was introduced. The aforementioned Iron Man Experience opening on January 11 is Hong Kong Disneyland’s first Marvel-themed ride. The Marvel universe will continue to expand with new experiences and attractions taking over Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters and Autopia. The shooter ride replacing Astro Blasters will feature heroes from Marvel comics; one piece of concept art shows Ant-Man. As for the other attraction, Disney says it’s “dedicated to one of the most popular Marvel franchises.”
Hopping out of superhero world and into the rest of the park, more big changes are happening. The castle and the surrounding area will be transformed to better suit entertainment experiences and include a Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique. They’re also adding a Frozen-themed land that will immerse park attendees in the world of Arendelle. Shops, restaurants, and entertainment will all be themed. WDW News Today has concept pieces teasing these additions, but you can get a glimpse below.
Finally, Adventureland is gaining a touch of Moana. The upcoming film will have presence in the park in the form of Moana’s Village Festival. There will be a stage show and a Moana meet and greet.

In short, Hong Kong Disneyland is getting all the things. I was planning to visit the park in the next five years, but at this point, I’ll wait until the expansion is completed before I book. I’m most excited about walking into Arendelle. Which part of the expansion has you drooling? Let me know in the comments.

Parker Posey is the Perfect Dr. Smith for Netflix’s LOST IN SPACE
Netflix and Legendary’s upcoming reboot of Lost in Space is still over a year away, but we’re very excited about the latest addition to the cast: Parker Posey has signed on to play Doctor Smith!
Deadline broke the story, which noted that the new Lost in Space will retain the same basic premise of the original series with a modernized tone and updated characters. In Irwin Allen’s classic show from 1965, the Robinson family of space explorers found themselves hopelessly adrift in the universe thanks to the sabotage of Doctor Zachary Smith. Unfortunately for Dr. Smith, he was unable to escape the Robinson’s ship, the Jupiter 2, before he was trapped on board as well.
Although Dr. Smith was initially the Robinsons’ adversary, the later episodes (and Jonathan Harris’ performance) transformed Smith into a more comedic character. Harris made Smith so funny that fans loved him even though he was a sniveling coward who cared about no one except himself. Gary Oldman played Smith in the Lost in Space movie from 1998, his take on the character was more serious…which made him less engaging than Harris’ Smith.
That’s why we’re so happy that Posey is playing Smith in the reboot series. Sure, Smith’s first name is gonna have to be changed. But if anyone can play selfishly evil and funny at the same time, it’s Parker Posey!
Even back in Dazed and Confused (or in the 1995 film Party Girl in the GIF above), Parker demonstrated that ability while portraying Darla Marks. Parker has made a name for herself playing wacky, over-the-top adversaries in Josie and the Pussycats and Best in Show, but she’s also managed to show terrific vulnerability in Clockwatchers and Broken English, among other films. Those traits could be an invaluable way for Posey to humanize Smith without losing the qualities that made the original character so much fun to watch. We can’t wait to see what Posey does as Dr. Smith!
Molly Parker and Toby Stephens also star in the series as Maureen and John Robinson: with Maxwell Jenkins and Taylor Russell as their children, Will and Judy. The couple’s other daughter, Penny, and Major Don West will presumably be cast soon. Lost in Space will premiere on Netflix in 2018.

SUPERGIRL Recap: The Darkest Place
Editor’s note: This post contains spoilers for Supergirl. Proceed with caution if you’re not caught up.
During the last few minutes of last week’s episode of Supergirl, Mon-El was abducted by Lillian Luthor and her squad of goons. This week’s episode “The Darkest Place” wasted no time in jumping into the Cadmus world and taking several left turns. To find out where things are headed now, keep reading!
The best place to start is right where we were left hanging last week. Cadmus took Mon-El and we didn’t quite know why. But as with most things, the abduction was a plot to get Kara’s attention, which of course worked like a charm.
When Kara showed up, she was confronted by the real Hank! As if it wasn’t surprising enough that he survived his fight with Jeremiah and J’onn, here we learned that he had been transformed into Cyborg Superman. Apparently, he was saved by Cadmus who took it upon themselves to give him an “upgrade.” As a result, he’s now stronger than Kara. While both Kara and Mon-El were behind bars, Lillian explained that her distaste for aliens stems from her blame on them for sending her son Lex to prison.
But of course, Cadmus isn’t the new kid on the block; the organization has been around for more than a decade. Considering how recent Lex’s imprisonment was, Lillian and the group’s feelings about aliens go deeper than that. We’ve already seen shades of their opinion before. In short, Cadmus wants to take them out for the so-called greater good.
Lillian then shot Mon-El as a means of coercing Kara to wear a helmet that would absorb radiation from the solar flare. Once she went through with wearing it, Kara lost her powers and was distracted and weakened enough for Lillian to draw her blood. Lillian then gave Cyborg Superman some of Kara’s blood, allowing him to snoop around the Fortress of Solitude in search of “Project Medusa.”
After Kara was returned to her cell, she had a heart-to-heart with Mon-El. Believing she wouldn’t survive, Kara gave Mon a note to send to her sister Alex, and discussed his past and regrets regarding Daxam. Just as he was about to tell Kara something about his home planet, Jeremiah Danvers (YUP!) showed up but decided to stay there afterwards and let them go without him.
But Kara and Mon weren’t the only ones who had some excitement this week. James (a.k.a. Guardian) got a little bit more of the spotlight. Out to avenge his wife’s death, Phillip Karnowsky, another vigilante, has been targeting criminals who evade justice thanks to technicalities. That said, because of how similar Guardian’s gear is, the police are under the impression that James is responsible for Karnowsky’s recent crimes. Thankfully, however, James escaped the line of fire by the conclusion of “The Darkest Place.”
Alex also got her fair share of time in the limelight. With everything that was going on, Alex turned back to Maggie for help. Just as Maggie was starting to get friendly again, Alex launched into how hurt she was after having her heart shattered the week before. The scene was full of emotion, and was yet again a great way to ground the alien-filled series.
Speaking of relationships, J’onn found out the hard way why M’gann was so hesitant to offer her own blood: she’s a White Martian, not a Green one like him. Aside from anger on J’onn’s part, the result of this revelation was horrific visions of his dead family. Despite M’gann’s denial of her kind’s terrible treatment of the Green Martians, J’onn was furious and made her transform into her true form before he attacked her.
According to M’gann, White Martians found a way to weaponize their blood and use it to turn Green Martians white just like them. Angry, J’onn decided to punish M’gann and let her “rot” in her cell, which is a great alternative to death. Sadly that won’t help much as there’s nothing they can do to stop his transformation… yet.

Ben Schwartz Brings BB-8 to Life in this STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS
Star Wars: The Force Awakens brought us several new characters to love, but hands-down, one of the most-beloved new characters from the film is that orange and white circular astromech named BB-8. Just like R2-D2 in the original trilogy, BB-8 managed to bring a ton of personality to the screen without once uttering a word in English—or any other recognizable language, for that matter. Of course, that wasn’t always the plan for the tiny bundle of droid. There was a time that BB-8 actually communicated in English, not the beeps and whirs we’ve come to associate with droid language.
By now, you’re probably well aware that both Bill Hader and Ben Schwartz were asked to record the voice of everyone’s new favorite droid in Star Wars. We’ve all imagined BB-8 with the voices of some of our favorite Schwartz and Hader characters like a Jean-Ralphio or maybe even Stephon (“this droid has everything”), but thanks to a new featurette on the newly released Force Awakens 3D collectors edition, you can actually experience a small taste of Schwartz’s version of BB-8. The official Star Wars Twitter recently released this featurette with a taste of what could have been.
BB-8 speaks in “Sounds of the Resistance,” from Star Wars #TheForceAwakens Collector’s Edition. https://t.co/vOOTyXzurL pic.twitter.com/z1NUjT7nic
— Star Wars (@starwars) November 15, 2016
I’ve got to be honest, while I was really looking forward to hearing BB-8 tell Rey how Kylo and his Knights were “the wooooorst,” this does get your mind reeling at how different the film could have been if Schwartz had stayed the voice of Rey’s droid bestie. Ultimately, I think what makes BB-8 so perfect is that we never know with 100% certainty what the droid is saying. Still, I feel like in these trying times, the world deserves at least a featurette of Rey and Jean-BB-8-Ralphio exploring the galaxy, don’t you?
Would you have liked BB-8 to have a more human voice? What do you think of Ben Schwartz’s version of the droid? Tell us your thoughts in the comments!

Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” Cracks the Hot 100 for the First Time
Leonard Cohen‘s most enduring track is one that never actually brought him much success. “Hallelujah,” the scriptural masterpiece from Cohen’s 1984 album, Various Positions, has long been revered as a cornerstone of contemporary songwriting, but its actual progenitor was never much celebrated for it. Despite Hot 100 appearances by several of the classic’s covers, it would ultimately take Cohen’s death on November 7 to vault his own name onto the list.
In the past week, as Pitchfork reports, Cohen’s “Hallelujah” has been downloaded 33,000 times and streamed an incredible 3.8 million times—a 278% increase. The uptick gave Cohen the No. 12 spot on the Digital Song Sales chart and landed him at No. 59 on the Hot 100. Cohen’s song did spend a week on Billboard’s Hot Singles Chart in 2012, but it has never before placed in the exalted Hot 100 list. The song’s two most famous renditions, by Jeff Buckley and Rufus Wainwright, have both spent time on the list, as have the versions by Justin Timberlake, the a cappella group Pentatonix, and contestants from both American Idol and The Voice. Given that context, it’s a travesty that it’s taken until now for Cohen’s version to crack the chart.
Cohen initially wrote more than 80 verses for “Hallelujah,” obsessing over each lyric. And even after he pared the song down to album-track length in 1984, he continued to fine tune the piece, never quite satisfied with a finished product. Others were more than happy with it, though. John Cale unearthed the track in 1991 and covered it out of arcane fascination. Buckley heard Cale’s version and then recorded his own in 1994. Today, “Hallelujah” has been covered by more than 300 artists, and that number is sure to increase in the coming months as we get used to a world without Leonard Cohen. No cover, though, will ever carry the same gravitas as the original, and hallelujah to that.

Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, and Coulson Get LEGO Minifigs
One of the great things about LEGO owning the license for about a billion pieces of intellectual property (seriously, they’re rivaling Funko at this point for how many different title’s sets they put out) is that they can make sets that don’t correspond to any one movie or TV show. In the case of their Marvel Comics line, it means they can make sets that include characters only seen in the comics. According to a recent report of several January 2017 sets by Brickset (shared via io9), a few fan favorites will be getting minifig representation for the first time: namely Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk.
The current Ms. Marvel, Kamala Khan, has been in the comics since 2013 and was Marvel’s first Muslim character to headline a solo title. But it’s not her religion that made her so beloved, it’s the way she handles situations with plucky resolve, despite being a “second string hero” from a “second string city.” Her shape-shifting abilities made her stand out immediately, and those elements are on full display in the LEGO set “Captain America Jet Pursuit.”
Kamala has some super long arms with huge hands in her minifig, which will surely come in handy as she helps Pilot Captain America as he fights Adaptoid, who appears to have Iron Man’s suit, Falcon’s wings, and even Cap’s shield. Bummer!
In addition to the truly unique Ms. Marvel figure, another set offers some never-before-offered characters. The “Hulk vs. Red Hulk” set, which includes Hulk, Red Hulk, She-Hulk, and Red She-Hulk, the latter three completely new to LEGO. She-Hulk has gone through many changes since her debut in 1980 and is currently one of Marvel’s most progressive female characters, a fighter for social justice. And sure, there’s no real reason why this set includes giant battle buggies, but you gotta give the kids something to build, right?
And, to round things off, a set called “Iron Man: Detroit Steel Strikes,” which includes Justin Hammer in a massive robot suit fighting against Invincible Iron Man and — coolest of all — ABC’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s Agent Phil Coulson and his amazing car, Lola. Does Lola have flight-conversion capabilities? You bet your dumb face!
So, Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, and Agent Coulson are minifigs now…can’t beat that with a stick, can ya? All three of these sets will be available beginning in January 2017.
