Is Harrison Ford Punching Ryan Gosling the Greatest Picture Ever? (Yes)
We knew Harrison Ford accidentally punched Ryan Gosling in the face on the set of Blade Runner: 2049, but seeing photographic evidence of it was something else. We discussed that incredible image on today’s Nerdist News Talks Back, along with the tasty news McDonald’s is bringing back a certain sauce Rick and Morty fans have been clamoring for, as well as kicking off of our Monster Madness bracket.
A triple helping of Nerdist editors joined host Jessica Chobot today, as Rachel Heine, Kyle Hill, and Kyle Anderson helped break down the biggest pop culture stories. They started with the likely Pulitzer Prize-winning shot of the punch Harrison Ford mistakenly landed on Ryan Gosling during the making of Blade Runner: 2049. Let’s see it.
This still of Harrison Ford accidentally punching Ryan Gosling for real during a Blade Runner 2049 scene is amazing. pic.twitter.com/3uKIxHo1AT
— Toucan Dan (@GolazoDan) September 30, 2017
Oh. My. God.
Is Ford–or anyone–a good enough actor to fake that reaction, or was it “accidental” like a fox? If it was a mistake though, who owes whom an apology glass of Scotch here? Speaking of Gosling, what did everyone think of his hosting performance on SNL’s season premiere this past weekend? And while Gosling might be dreamy, who is our dream host for the show?
From there they took a portal gun to the world of Rick and Morty. We’re giving everyone one more day to catch up on the season three finale before doing a full All Ricks Considered tomorrow, but we had to digest the news McDonald’s is bringing back Szechuan Sauce for one day only this Saturday. Are we going to try and get some? (:raises hand:) Does anyone really remember the stuff, or is this all hype after Rick and Morty made such a big deal of it? And to give you a little taste of tomorrow, they shared their initial thoughts on season three.
Finally, today we unleashed our Monster Madness Bracket, the followup to our March Badness tournament that crowned Darth Vader the best villain ever. This time we’re pitting 16 of the biggest, baddest pop culture creatures of all-time against one another. Starting October 10th, we’ll be opening up voting on a new matchup every day on NNTB throughout the month.
Until then we’re breaking down the tournament, and today we discussed our favorites and analyzed the first few contests: Cloverfield vs. Maleficent, King Kong vs. Rancor, and Cthulu vs. Balrog.
You have until 11:59 p.m. on October 9th to get your bracket in to be eligible to win some prizes, so do that now. And then tune in live every weekday to Nerdist News Talks Back at 1:00 p.m. PST on our YouTube and Alpha channels to find out which monster emerged victorious.
We’re not saying Harrison Ford will punch you in the face if you don’t, we’re just saying we’re not sure what he is capable of.

Catwoman Finally Answers Batman’s Lingering Question
There are major spoilers ahead for this week’s Batman # 32! If you want to remain unspoiled, then you should turn back now!
Last June, Batman unexpectedly proposed to his longtime girlfriend, and even longer time frenemy, Catwoman, after taking stock of his life following their confrontation with Bane. DC held off on giving us Catwoman’s answer as an extended flashback played out in “The War of Jokes and Riddles” storyline. But now the war is over, and Catwoman has given her response.
USA Today broke the news about Catwoman’s “yes,” which should prove to be interesting as their union unfolds in the weeks and months ahead. Batman writer Tom King was also interviewed for that story, but you may want hold off on clicking over there, as it spoils the secret reason that Batman was so ashamed by his actions during the Joker and Riddler’s conflict.
Getting Batman and Catwoman together as a couple isn’t breaking new ground for DC, as they’ve had an on-again, off-again, courtship through many decades and reboots. No matter what happens, they always seem to end up back together. The real question here is whether DC will actually go through with the wedding and keep them together for an extended period. Now, that would be groundbreaking, and it also goes against the conventional wisdom of angst-filled superhero comics. However, it seems to have worked out for Superman and Lois Lane. Perhaps the Dark Knight and Catwoman are due for some happiness of their own.
It’s worth noting that the original Batman and Catwoman from Earth-2 also got married, and they ended up having a daughter named Helena Wayne, who went on to become the Huntress. It’s a little early for that possibility to unfold yet again, but there is a precedent for it. In the meantime, here’s a look back at the moment that the Golden Age versions of these characters came together.
Batman #32 will be released on Wednesday, October 4.

Marvel’s Hawkeye Will Star in OLD MAN LOGAN Prequel Series
Nearly ten years ago, Mark Millar and artist Steve McNiven teamed up for the Old Man Logan storyline that heavily influenced the Logan movie that arrived in theaters earlier this year. In Millar and McNiven’s story, Logan was paired with an unlikely partner: Clint Barton a.k.a. Hawkeye for a cross-country mission. And while a version of Old Man Logan is currently running around in the Marvel Universe, the elder Hawkeye’s story was thought to be over until now.
The New York Daily News is reporting that Marvel will launch an Old Man Hawkeye 12-issue miniseries with writer Ethan Sacks and artist Marco Checchetto. It’s going to be a prequel to Old Man Logan and take place five years before that story, when Hawkeye still had his eyesight. In this timeline, the villains have complete control of the United States and most of the heroes are either dead or in hiding. That’s actually a major part of this story, as Hawkeye attempts to avenge his fallen comrades before he goes completely blind.
One of the lingering threads from Old Man Logan was the revelation that Hawkeye married Peter Parker’s daughter, and their daughter became a corrupt version of Spider-Woman. That seems like something that could and should be explored in this new prequel. Considering one of Hawkeye’s motivations in Old Man Logan was to reestablish a new generation of superheroes, it may also show us some of Hawkeye’s previous attempts to form a new Avengers team.
Another strong possibility for this series is that other surviving heroes and villains could also appear, but Marvel is holding off on those potential reveals at the moment. We’ll learn more when Old Man Hawkeye #1 takes aim at comic book stores in January 2018.

STAR WARS Fans Uncovered the Secret Location of the First Jedi Temple
“Luke Skywalker has vanished.” Those were the words that kicked off the opening crawl of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and it literally took the entire movie before we saw Mark Hamill’s iconic character make his return. Given the level of intrigue involved in finding Luke’s hiding place, many fans assumed that the first Jedi Temple on Ach-To was in some far off location that wasn’t easily accessible. The Force Awakens briefly showed its place among the stars in a navigation chart, and it may have meant that our previous assumptions were wrong. Today’s Nerdist News is taking a crash course in Galactic Basic and uncovering what Ach-To’s location could mean for The Last Jedi.
There are potential spoilers ahead for The Last Jedi! If you don’t want to get bitten by Porgs or discover more details about Ach-To, then this is the right time to make a Kessel Run of your own!
Join your host, and the Resistance’s resident astronomer, Jessica Chobot, as she walks us through a solution that was apparently in front of us the entire time. First off, how many of you can read Aurebesh? Probably not too many. It hasn’t caught on like Star Trek‘s Klingon language, but one fan’s ability to read Aurebesh has led to an intriguing revelation. They took the time to translate the writing on the star chart from The Force Awakens. And it turns out that Ach-To isn’t off on the Galactic Rim, it’s just a couple of light years away from planets like Naboo, Dagobah, and Hoth.
What separates this from other Easter Eggs is that Lucasfilm’s Pablo Hidalgo was unexpectedly cagey when asked about this discovery. He said only to ask him about it again after The Last Jedi is released. That makes us believe that Ach-To’s location will be a plot point in the film, and the First Order’s inability to find the planet may also be addressed.
Are you intrigued by the long-term planning behind this revelation? Ignite your lightsabers and let’s discuss!

Luc Besson’s Lucy sequel script is in the works!
Stranger Things might have a fifth season after all!
Be sure to vote for your favorite massive beast in our Nerdoween Monster Madness bracket !
Luc Besson’s LUCY Sequel Has a Script
Luc Besson‘s Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets might not have tapped its full potential with critics and moviegoers, but the director knows how to achieve big screen success. And it looks like he’ll be returning to theaters with something he knows works, with a sequel to his 2014 hit sci-fi film Lucy.
Variety reports that Besson’s studio EuropaCorp is changing its film strategy after the ambitious, expensive Valerian didn’t deliver at the box office, and they’ll now be focusing on “making action thrillers and science-fiction films” with smaller budgets. That will apparently include a followup to the Scarlett Johansson-led Lucy, which EuropaCorp CEO Marc Shmuger recently told shareholders Besson has already written a script for.
There is no information on the movie’s plot, or whether Johansson would return, but the ending of the original was such that literally anything is possible. If you can vanish into the internet like an all powerful, omnipresent god, you can probably re-manifest yourself into human form.
Maybe in her infinite wisdom Lucy will have learned that the whole “we only use 10% of our brain” thing isn’t accurate, and we can instead focus on the superpower giving drug she was given instead? Maybe someone else can take it and also harness her god-like powers, giving her a foe worthy to face?
Are you excited for a Lucy sequel? Tell us why in the comments below.

Tom Petty Has Passed Away at 66
Tom Petty, the iconic songwriter who embodied classic, vibrant American rock for decades has died at the age of 66. Petty’s longtime manager, Tony Dimitriades confirmed the musician’s passing after erroneous reports earlier today. He suffered from cardiac arrest in his Malibu home and could not be revived.
Full statement: pic.twitter.com/FGCVI5yIaa
— Tom Petty (@tompetty) October 3, 2017
Born Thomas Earl Petty in Gainesville, Florida, the musician would go onto leave an indelible mark on popular music with his early band Mudcrutch and then most notably with Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. The latter released an endless string of hits beginning with the 1977 reissue of their first single “Breakdown.” That song came from the group’s first, self-titled record, which also features the classic, “American Girl.” By 1979’s Damn The Torpedoes, Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers were megastars and dominated the airwaves well into ’80s.
Later in his career, Petty pursued solo work and also contributed to the supergroup, The Traveling Wilburys, with George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, and Jeff Lynne. Most recently however, Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers were celebrating the band’s 40th year with a national tour. Their most recent date was a September 25th performance at the Hollywood Bowl, and they had planned to end their tour with two dates in New York City this November.
Thanks to everyone for supporting us for the last 40 years! Without YOU, there'd be no US! #TPHB40 https://t.co/MrJg4dVJJp

Though one of Petty’s final messages on social media was one of thanks to all his fans for their decades of support, its clear that the debt of gratitude lies with us. Thank you for everything, Tom Petty, and rest easy.

These Disney Princess Wedding Dresses Are What Dreams Are Made Of
When it was announced earlier this month that Japan’s Kuraudia Co. had created a line of Disney princess themed wedding dresses, we almost couldn’t believe it. Who hasn’t wanted to wear a giant flouncy dress and marry the person they love all the while looking like they’ve been dressed by a fairy godmother? Well, now you can make this happen–if you’re in Japan, that is. Originally unveiled on August 30, you can now wish for your perfect princess wedding with these gorgeous photos.
Asahi reports that the line will have 14 dresses influenced by six of Disney’s flagship princesses: Belle, Ariel, Rapunzel, Aurora, Snow White, and Cinderella. The dresses are available exclusively in Japan beginning in November and will cost the rather handsome sum of around $3,500 to rent for your special day. This is definitely one of our favorite things that we’ve seen done with the Disney license, making our princess dreams a reality and for that special Prince or Princess Charming in your life you can get a matching tux for only $900.
You can check out more of these dreamy creations in our gallery below.
We adore these dream come true dresses, and are already scheming on how to get to Japan, get a dress, then travel back to wear it whilst we stay the night in the Sleeping Beauty castle at Disneyland.
Which of these dresses are you dying to get your hands on? Will you be flying to Japan to get married just for the chance to live out your one true dream of being an IRL Disney Princess? Maybe you’re mad that they didn’t do a Tiana dress? Let us know in the comments.

5 of the Cutest Farm Animals in Fiction
In case you didn’t know, October 2 is World Farm Animals Day. Pigs, sheep, chicken, cows–they all call farms home. Growing up in a rural area and spending part of my childhood on a farm and in 4-H taught me to respect animals, big and small. Seeing those same animals in some of my most cherished stories reinforced what I learned, plus they were often depicted in ridiculously precious fashion.
To that end, let’s look at five of the cutest farm animals in fiction.
Wilbur
Looking up images of Wilbur from Charlotte’s Web makes me feel so warm and fuzzy. I reread the book and rewatched the animated film more times than I remember and always connected to Wilbur, the runt of the litter that befriended Fern and Charlotte the spider and became famous.
Maggie
Home on the Range‘s Maggie was once a prize show cow. Though she’s heading into her older years, she’s full of spunk. Her charm and headstrong personality make her completely moo-worthy.
Babe and Ferdinand
No, there is no limit to how many adorable pigs I’ll put on this list. I can’t ignore Babe, the pig that longed to be a sheepdog, or his pal Ferdinand for being ingenious enough to imitate a rooster in order to save his skin.
Bonus Babe:
Shaun the Sheep
Is there anything better than a sheep committed to mischief? I don’t think so. Hence why Shaun of Shaun the Sheep belongs on this list.
Pua
We didn’t see the actual farm on Motunui in Moana, but we saw farm animals like Pua. The little pig is more adorable than Babe. I’m sorry, but it’s just the truth.

Watch This Incredible Makeup Transformation into IT’s Pennywise
Considering the record-breaking box office success of the recent big screen adaptation of Stephen King’s IT, we expect to see about a million people dressed as Pennywise this Halloween. But since most people aren’t trained makeup artists, that also means we expect to see close to a million messy/disappointing/unfortunate versions of Bill Skarsgård’s creepy monster. But you don’t have to be one of them, thanks to this video showing how to go from a perfectly normal looking human to a sewer-dwelling, kid-devouring clown.
Created by one our favorite makeup artists, Jody Steel, this spot-on recreation of Pennywise’s memorable visage promises to be the first of many videos this month dedicated to our favorite holiday of the year. “I’m only doing Halloween makeup ideas from here on out,” she said. “My favorite holiday.”
What stands out watching the transformation take place is how quickly it gets really creepy. Even just the white face with those distinct eyebrows reminded us of how Pennywise made our skin crawl.
We don’t know what other makeup transformation videos Jody Steel will be releasing this month in the lead-up to her (and our) favorite holiday, but we’re excited to find out which pop culture creepers she’ll be teaching us how to bring to life just in time for Halloween.
What other makeup transformations do you hope to see from Jody this October? Don’t be scared to tell us of your Halloween hopes and dreams (or, more appropriately, nightmares) in the comments below.

Rick and Morty‘s third season is over, and we’re certainly going to have a lot to think about over the hiatus between seasons. The series wrapped with a new mission for our titular duo: to eradicate the alien infestation from the Kennedy Sex Tunnels. Of course, the story wasn’t as simple as it initially appeared, and it turned into a Rick vs. the President showdown while Beth tried to figure out if she was a clone. We’ve still got some lingering questions what’s next for Rick Sanchez and his family. Like the song goes, maybe that’s why we’ve got Mister Poopybutthole. In the post-credits scene, Mister Poopybutthole brought his family for this week’s t-shirt giveaway.
This is the end of the road for our weekly Rick and Morty season three t-shirt contest. For the last two months, we’ve teamed up with Spencers to give away 10 t-shirts that captured the spirit of each individual episode. To win this week’s shirt, you’ll have to find a bad memory with Mister Poopybutthole. Or you could just get the shirt for free. All you really need to do to enter our weekly giveaway is to click here and tweet. You must be following Nerdist on Twitter and based in the U.S. to win.
We’ve previously given away some pretty amazing Rick and Morty shirts, including Welcome to Froopyland, Morty’s Mind Benders, Morty Pride 2017, Toxic Rick and Morty, Spiritual Leader Rick, the Vindicators logo, Pickle Rick, and Mad Morty.
