IKEA Gives the People What They Want: Pet Furniture
Let’s say — and this is strictly hypothetical, and in no way reflective of real life — that your cat can’t get enough of the KALLAX in the corner of your living room and often inserts herself in the convenient cubby holes that should be holding your Funko collection or the coffee table books that didn’t fit on the LACK. Or maybe your pupper is desperate to get a spot on that KARLSTAD even though he’s fully aware he’ll get his claws stuck in the stitching.
Fear not, pet lover: IKEA’s got you covered with the rollout of their LURVIG line.
The first IKEA furniture line designed with furry friends in mind boasts a range of beds and cushions perfectly sized for nearly any dog or cat breed (though the cushion may be a bit of a squeeze for a Newfoundland). And LURVIG isn’t limited to furniture. Need a new slow feeder, litter pan, scratch mat, or pet carrier, preferably in a calming shade of green? The line has you covered, almost as though IKEA’s master plan involves you never stepping foot in a Petsmart again.
Perhaps most delightfully, IKEA — fully aware of a feline’s penchant for hopping into the shelves of a KALLAX — designed a sleeping spot that slides directly into the shelving unit so Mittens won’t be so intent on knocking aside your ever-so-delicate Metal Earth model of the Enterprise D.
Because it’s IKEA and you’re already shaking a stack of dollar bills in the general direction of the nearest superstore, the prices are wallet-friendly, never totaling more than $59.99 (for the “cat/dog bed,” because IKEA wouldn’t want to discriminate or alienate those ride-or-die animal loyalists). And look, I’m not saying Fido needs a pet bed that would fit three more of him if necessary.
But doesn’t he?

Channing Tatum’s GAMBIT Will Open February 2019
Of all the characters in the X-Men canon, none has been so beloved for so long a time and so underserved since the ’90s cartoon as Gambit, the Cajun charmer who can charge any inanimate object with energy and throw it, creating a small but powerful explosive. After his appearance in the ill-fated X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie, where he was played by Taylor Kitsch, it looked for years like he might finally get a proper movie, with Channing Tatum assaying the role.
Talk about a project nigh-willing itself into existence, because after several starts and stops, Deadline is reporting Gambit has a release date…again.
Mark your calendars (in mechanical pencil, maybe, rather thank ink) for February 14, 2019 as the date to see Remy Le Beau step up to movie lead. The February area of the calendar has been quite successful for Fox’s X-Men properties of late, following Deadpool‘s record-breaking debut in 2016 and Logan in early March this year. Whether the Gambit movie actually does get made and makes this release date is another story, though; a February 2019 release would put it nearly two and a half years after its initial October 2016 projected release date.
As of now, Rango and Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski is set to direct from Josh Zetumer’s script. The character of Gambit was created in 1990 by Chris Claremont and Jim Lee and grew to prominence due to the 1992 cartoon series, where his fraught romance with Rogue was a major plot point. Whether Rogue — played by Anna Paquin or otherwise — will be in this new movie is not known, but we’d probably bet not, at least for this first go-round.
But this sounds promising for a movie that seemed as dead as Darwin not long ago. Do you think it’ll finally hit theaters or is it doomed to a fate worse than The Last Stand‘s continuity? Let us know in the comments below!

New STRANGER THINGS Official Card Game Sounds Pretty Confusing
Given the incredible popularity of Netflix’s Stranger Things, it’s no surprise that we’ve seen an onslaught of collectibles, Funko Pops, and even a retro style video game. But nothing is more appropriate for the series than to to venture into tabletop gaming, since Dungeons and Dragons had such a prominent place in the first season. Now, Hasbro is actually making a Stranger Things card game… though it is definitely not what we expected.
Via io9, there is a Stranger Things Kellogg’s Eggo Brand Card Game coming out this fall. And despite the prominent branding on this box, we’re pretty sure that this game doesn’t actually involve eating real Eggos. But perhaps it should!
Io9 was given a brief description of the game’s mechanics that makes our noses bleed every time we try to wrap our heads around it. “Cards can either send a player’s character to the UPSIDE DOWN, make an opponent draw 2, reverse the order of play, summon the DEMOGORGON, or cause a rift that sends everyone who was RIGHT SIDE Up to the UPSIDE DOWN, and vice versa! To win and escape the UPSIDE DOWN, get rid of all your EGGO cards before the DEMOGORGON attacks or be toast!”
We really do hope that the actual instructions in the game are a little bit easier to understand. Whoever wrote that certainly wasn’t Mr. Clarke! Plus, we’re pretty sure that the last sentence is really going out of its way to make a breakfast pun.
The game lets players choose between Will, Mike, Lucas, Dustin, Eleven, Hopper, and Barb. Now, we want justice for Barb as much as anyone else, but the game really should have put Nancy and Jonathan in that lineup (maybe Steve, too). Presumably we’ll learn more when Hasbro releases the game this fall, but there had better be some really well-written instructions in that box!

THE X-FILES Cast on How the Reboot Lives Up to the Original
Following 2016’s six-episode revival of The X-Files, every fan wanted to know: what’s next for Scully, Mulder, and the gang? The answer, it turns out, is ten episodes of classic X-Files weirdness in a 21st century wrapper, intended to appeal to new fans and diehards alike. We caught up with showrunner and creator Chris Carter and actors Gillian Anderson, David Duchovny, and Mitch Pileggi to find out more.
For the actors as well as the fans, this will be a return to the good old days. Mulder, as ever, wants to believe; Scully lives by facts and science; and overarching intrigue mixes with monsters of the week and various extraterrestrials. Pileggi, who has played Assistant Director of the FBI Walter Skinner since late in season 1, said the new ten-episode run will treat viewers to some “old-school Mulder and Scully.” Everyone’s favorite agents, he explained, are “back to what they were doing that made everybody love the show so much and built such a tremendous fanbase that has stuck with us for so long.” Anderson agreed, saying that the team were “delivering everything that is expected of us to deliver,” but in a way that works better for them as individuals and for the show’s format. “It feels more manageable somehow,” she said. “We’re not pulling 17-hour days, which we used to do all the time, so as an old person that’s quite nice.”
Although the essence of The X-Files may remain the same, the world around it has undergone significant changes since the show first went off the air 15 years ago. We use extremely advanced digital technology every day for the most mundane things, for instance—and it’s thanks in part to said technology that the conspiracy theories Mulder espoused have crawled out of fringe obscurity into the mainstream. “When we [first] stopped the run of the show,” Duchovny notes, “Mulder was getting his information from little newspapers, little news outlets, blogs. Now that kind of information, false and true, is open to everyone. It’s an interesting proposition to take this guy into a world that maybe is more receptive to his way of thinking.”
Granted, these days it’s more about chemtrails, anti-vaccination movements, and lizard people rather than alien contact, but still. How do Mulder’s credulous underdog schtick and Scully’s skepticism hold up in the face of the current climate?
“You can still question the existence or the impossibility of something even though it’s right in front of you,” said Anderson. “Maybe her [Scully’s] degree of skepticism has shifted, but as a scientist and a doctor, she still has to ask those questions of the universe, Mulder, and anyone else.”
Duchovny offered a broader take on the issue, hinting that the dynamic between Mulder and Scully taps into something universally human. “I think ultimately what makes the show, or any other piece of art or drama, enduring is actually something that never changes, which is humanity’s capacity to wonder, our capacity to imagine. So I think that’s what the show was always about—this president or that president, internet or not, phones or not.”
In addition to these themes, the actors and Carter stated that the show’s timelessness is also partially due to X-Files fandom getting passed down to new generations. “I go to these conventions,” Pileggi recounted, “and I see kids ten years old that come up who have watched every episode, and it’s so gratifying to see that type of response. The grandparents have passed it down to the parents, and then the parents pass it down to their kids.”
According to Anderson, this same timelessness has allowed The X-Files to reclaim its place as a frontrunner of small-screen sci-fi/fantasy for the 21st century. The show, she said, was “so much at the beginning of this type of TV, introducing something that was so addictive that people had to come back every single week and watch it en masse with families. And we were also at the beginning of proper regular sci-fi on television, and now every other film is sci-fi, every other show is sci-fi.”
Carter summed up the show’s appeal with a simple character-focused statement: “I think it’s really to do with Mulder and Scully and those characters and their relationship and the respect they give one another; it’s the kind of stories we tell; it’s the way we tell them.”
However, The X-Files‘ longevity still continues to surprise the cast, who hadn’t expected to return to their old roles almost two and a half decades after they started. “I remember talking with my manager at the time and saying, ‘This is a show about aliens,'” Duchovny recalled. “It’s like, I like the part, let’s do the part and then I won’t have to do any TV, because no one’s going to watch this. It’ll be a good pilot but it’s never going to catch on.”
“Coming back to something after so much time,” noted Anderson, “I’m emulating somebody that exists on celluloid [as] so much younger. What are the elements of her that are still evident, and which elements are appropriate or which elements are actually inappropriate because they’re a matter of one’s age and how one ages and matures? So that’s been ongoing…in trying to do right by her.” The question is especially salient considering that the upcoming season might be Anderson’s last outing as Dr. Dana Scully. If it’s true, her performance in these ten episodes could have a serious impact on the character’s legacy. (Hopefully she’ll stay on, but if not, she’ll no doubt be moving onwards and upwards to even greater heights.)
So once this season finishes, what’s the long-term plan for the show? Carter didn’t give a definite answer, instead saying, “Right now we’re just doing what we’re doing, and there are no plans beyond this.” But don’t despair, folks. He quickly reassured fans that “there’s a lot of life left in the show.” As long as that spark keeps going, “as long as there are stories to tell,” he said, “it’s hard to imagine that it wouldn’t go on.”
What are you looking forward to most in the new X-Files? Tell us in the comments!

Chris Hardwick Signs 3-Picture Deal at Blumhouse
Nerdist founder Chris Hardwick is a busy, busy guy. Between producing and hosting shows like The Wall, Talking with Chris Hardwick, and the upcoming The Awesome Show, he’s also launched a new national comedy tour, his production company Fish Ladder has several TV shows in the works, and–oh yeah–he hosts the Nerdist Podcast right here on this very network. Like I said, busy guy, but now you can add “horror movie maker” to his list of credits! Chris is launching a new film production shingle called “Spitball” and has partnered with Blumhouse Productions on three upcoming films.
The first-look deal includes movies that will be produced under the Blumhouse banner, plus Chris will be directing one of the films and heavily involved in the other two. The collaboration was first hinted at in this week’s Nerdist Podcast episode with Blumhouse founder Jason Blum. (Listen to the episode here! The specific passage starts at the 1:12:38 mark.) That episode is what led to the partnership, according to Blum. “I was so inspired talking genre films with Chris on Nerdist, that by the end of the interview I asked if he would consider doing a film with us,” he explained. “We met one more time later in the week and decided to make two more. Chris is a passionate genre fan and I feel lucky to be in business with him.”
Chris said of the announcement: “I’m a die-hard horror fan and have always wanted to be in the horror business. Jason is an AMAZING entrepreneur, a super nice guy, and a brilliant producer who is responsible for putting out SEVERAL of my favorite films, so I am beyond excited for this partnership!”
Blumhouse has produced some of the most acclaimed and successful genre movies of the past several years, getting major mileage out of their philosophy of “low-budget, high-concept” films that give filmmakers a chance to be creative. The company made its name with the Paranormal Activity franchise and has also produced horror juggernauts such as the Insidious, Sinister, and The Purge series in addition to mega-hits like Split, Get Out, and the Oscar-nominated Whiplash.
Chris Hardwick and Blumhouse Productions seems like a match made in darkly dreaming heaven to us!

Is Nintendo Secretly Working on the Game Boy Classic?
Between the NES Classic and the SNES Classic, Nintendo has apparently realized that there’s still a lot of interest in its original console systems. Assuming fans can find them, of course! Speculation has already led many fans to naturally assume that a Nintendo 64 Classic would be the next logical step. But today’s Nerdist News is following a report out of Japan that may mean the original Game Boy is going to get a classic edition as well.
Join the only host who uses a Warp Zone to get to work, Jessica Chobot, as she takes us back to the glory days of 1989! The Game Boy was Nintendo’s first portable console, and it was a little primitive by today’s standards. Black and white games may not catch the eye of many modern gamers, but Game Boy’s games were incredibly fun, including Super Mario Land, Tetris, and of course, the very first Pokémon titles.
A Japanese trademark bot recently tweeted out Nintendo’s filing for a new Game Boy Classic, which not only featured an image of the iconic handheld, but also noted several potential uses including smartphone programs and cases as well as consoles. That doesn’t necessarily mean that Nintendo will produce a Game Boy Classic, but it may help the company protect the brand from any potential knockoffs.
However, if Nintendo really is gearing up for a Game Boy Classic, there’s a huge catalog of games that could potentially be released for it. And is it a coincidence that two rounds of the recent Nintendo World Championships were played on Game Boys? One way or another, Nintendo is keeping this brand alive!
Are you up for a Game Boy Classic Edition? Let’s discuss in the comment section below!

ROSWELL is Getting Rebooted with an Immigration Twist at The CW
Nearly 15 years after the extraterrestrials left Roswell, The CW is ready to reboot the sci-fi series with a more locally alien twist
According to The Hollywood Reporter, author, writer, and producer Carina MacKenzie (The Originals) is giving Roswell a modern spin by making the new lead heroine the daughter of undocumented immigrants. As it turns out, her teenage crush is a police officer who is hiding his alien heritage from the people around him. Once the young woman discovers his secret, they become entangled with a government cover up of aliens on Earth and find their connection threatened by “the politics of fear and hatred.”
It doesn’t sound like there is a direct link between this series and the original Roswell, which ran for two seasons on The WB before migrating to UPN for a third and final season (the network that pre-dated The CW). But the vague description of the reboot series may actually allow some, if not all, of the mythology from the first series to still be in play for this show.
Roswell was based upon the Roswell High book series by Melinda Metz, and starred Jason Behr, Katherine Heigl, and Brendan Fehr as a trio of half-human, half-alien hybrids who lived hidden among normal humans in secret. Shiri Appleby also starred in the series as Liz Parker, a young girl who discovered the secret of Max Evans (Behr) when he used his powers to save her life. By the time the third season finale turned into a series finale, most of the surviving characters fled Roswell to avoid a FBI trap. Presumably, most of them are still out there, if The CW wants to bring them back. There’s no good reason why the new series can’t maintain some continuity with the first series, and it is something that we’d love to see.

Could Nintendo’s Next Classic Be the Game Boy?
There’s big money in nostalgia, and nobody knows that better than Nintendo. Is that why their next classic return might be the Game Boy? We discussed those rumors on today’s game-centric Nerdist News Talks Back, along with that “perfect” leaked review for Super Mario Odyssey, the announced Settlers of Catan movie, and the new Stranger Things card game.
Host Jessica Chobot welcomed Nerdist News writer Joan Ford, associate editor Kyle Anderson, and Geek and Sundry‘s Amy Vorpahl on the show today. They started with reports that Nintendo’s newest trademark points to a return for the Game Boy, possibly as a console or a smartphone program. Which one do we think it would be? Which would we prefer? If it is a Classic-style console, what games and features should it include?
But that wasn’t the only Nintendo news of the day, after an early leaked review for Super Mario Odyssey from Edge Magazine gave it a perfect score. Can any game really be perfect? Can it live up to this kind of hype? What’s our all time favorite Mario game? And how do we think this newest one will compare to them and other Switch titles?
Speaking of games, the classic board game Settlers of Catan is making the jump to the big screen. Will that mean a story set inside the game, or people playing it? Will they go for a serious Battleship tone, or more of a Jumanji feel? Since we’re talking about it, what are our favorite strategies when playing? Did it lead to our biggest board game fight? And what’s the next property that will be scooped up?
Finally, there’s a new Eggo-themed, Uno-like card game coming for Stranger Things, where you play as one of the characters and send the others to the Upside Down and to face the Demogorgon. Uh…sure! But will we actually buy it? And can we think of any Stranger past tie-ins?
Just like it is every weekday, Nerdist News Talks Back was live today at 1:00 p.m. PST on our YouTube and Alpha channels. Tune in with us you and get in on the conversation.
It’s all fun and games. (Today that was literally true.)
Still talk back to us with your thoughts on today’s topics by sharing them with us in the comments below.

Who are Tessa Thompson’s LADY LIBERATORS?
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has realigned how Hollywood thinks of blockbusters, franchises, and comic book movies. Though the films have been groundbreaking at the box office, it’s been nine years since Marvel Studios began the MCU and they’re still two years away from having a solo female led movie on our screens.
But if Thor: Ragnarok’s Tessa Thompson has anything to do with it, that’s not going to stand. During a recent press conference for Taika Waititi’s much anticipated Thor film, Thompson regaled us with a rad story about confronting Kevin Feige with the possibility of an all-female Marvel movie.
“Recently I marched up with a couple other women in Marvel and were like, to Kevin, ‘what if there was a movie with some female superheroes?…like all of them?'” Thompson explained. According to Feige, Tessa’s dream could become a reality. “It’s a pretty amazing moment to be somewhere and have your shoulder get tapped and every female hero we have is standing there going, ‘How ’bout it?’ And I said, ‘Yes,'” recounted the head of Marvel Studios.
So if Feige says it’s (maybe) happening, then what would that movie look like? Once again, the hero none of us deserve came to our rescue. “There’s a precedent for it in the comics, right? With the Lady Liberators,” Thompson responded, giving hope to female comic fans everywhere. But who are the Lady Liberators and how could they come to life on the big screen?
Who Are the Lady Liberators?
First appearing Avengers #83, this all-female team was originally written by Roy Thomas as a way to mock the burgeoning feminist movement. But as with any misguided bigotry, it ended up showcasing exactly how wonderful its targets were, unintentionally becoming a cult hit filled with incredible panels featuring Marvel’s most famous female superheroes spouting radical politics and demanding an end to the patriarchy.
Drawn by John Buscema, the one-issue team-up consisted of Valkyrie, Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, Wasp, and Medusa. Unsurprisingly, Thomas couldn’t imagine a black woman on the team. But now with Tessa Thompson’s portrayal of Valkyrie, we have the potential for a rad super-powered girl gang led by a radical black woman. In the 1970 issue, the Lady Liberators attempt to smash the patriarchy by beating up a lot of bad guys and fighting the Avengers, but in a cop-out reveal it turns out the Lady Liberators are actually being mind controlled by a villain. Who cares! MCU movies rarely stick to canon and this could be a fantastic starting point for a brand new set of lady-centric Marvel films, especially since every member of the team exists in some way in Marvel’s live action adaptations.
Valkyrie
Created by Roy Thomas and John Buscema as a guise for the evil Enchantress, Valkyrie’s first appearance was as the radical leader of the Lady Liberators, but she didn’t become a regular recurring character until Defenders #4. A chosen warrior of Odin, Valkyrie A.K.A. Brunnhilde was picked to lead the Valkyrior to take fallen Asgardian soldiers to the afterlife. Though not immortal, Valkyrie ages far slower than humans and is one of the most powerful Asgardians to ever live. Carrying an enchanted sword named Dragonfang and riding a winged horse named Aragorn, she can also transport herself and others between the realms of the living and the dead. Valkyrie has been a part of numerous teams including the Defenders, Secret Avengers, and Doctor Doom‘s Avengers in AXIS.
Black Widow
Probably the most well known of all of the potential Lady Liberators due to her prominence in the MCU, Natasha Romanov was trained from her birth in 1928 to be an assassin in Stalingrad era Russia. Originally introduced as an antagonist to Iron Man in Tales of Suspense #52, Natasha is one of the longest running female characters in the Marvel canon. She has been a member of both S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers, and her power set is based around her spy training, agility, and speed. Proficient in numerous martial arts, she’s also been bioengineered to age slower and repress her traumatic memories.
Scarlet Witch
Magneto’s on-again off-again daughter Wanda Maximoff is one of the most powerful (sometimes) mutants who’s ever lived. Raised by a genetically engineered cow called Bova along with her brother Quicksilver, Wanda has one of the most eclectic and exciting origins in comics. Introduced in X-Men #4, she was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, originally a macguffin with undefined powers who could push along the plot as needed. But now we know she’s a powerful magician with the ability to manipulate chaos magic and change the fabric of reality itself.
Wasp
One of the original founders of the Avengers, Janet van Dyne also came up with the iconic moniker that now defines the most famous superhero team on earth. Janet first appeared in Tales to Astonish #44 and went on to lead the team from Avengers v1 #217. Wasp’s suit uses Pym Particles, so her powers are very similar to Ant-Man‘s, allowing her to change her size and when miniature she grows a pair of genetically modified wings that allow her to fly. Though the movie version of Wasp is actually Janet and Hank’s daughter, Hope van Dyne, we’re expecting to see Janet return to the screen in next year’s Ant-Man follow-up.
Medusa
The only member of Lady Liberators not appearing in the MCU, Attilan Queen Medusa is part of the Inhumans, a ruling class of advanced prehistoric humans who live on the Moon. They have similar powers to mutants except Inhuman abilities are defined by DNA and triggered by a strange “Terrigen Mist.” First appearing in Fantastic Four #36 as a member of the villainous Frightful Four, Medusa and her family were only in 50 issues over 50 years until Marvel decided to try and relaunch the series in the 2010s. Medusa’s famous power is her prehensile hair, which you likely saw come to life on ABC’s recent bad CGI wig show, The Inhumans.
We can’t wait to see if this dream team comes to life, but how about you? Are you stoked to see these rad women join forces? Just excited to see Tessa Thompson return as Valkyrie? Let us know in the comments!

ALADDIN and Friends Join the Funko Pop!s Family This Fall
This year marks the 25th anniversary of Disney’s Aladdin, the final of three Alan Menken/Howard Ashman animated musicals that have all become modern day classics. (The other two, of course, being Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid).
The film became so beloved that it spawned a successful Broadway musical, and will soon be a live-action spectacle starring Will Smith as the Genie. Now, as a way to celebrate all things Agrabah, Funko has announced that everyone’s favorite street rat and his friends are joining the Pop!s line-up this fall.
For wave 1 of this series, we’ve got Aladdin himself, a new take on Princess Jasmine in red (two previous versions of Jasmine in her classic blue look have been released from Funko in their Disney Princess waves), Jasmine’s best friend and protector, the tiger Rajah, and Aladdin’s partner-in-crime, Abu the monkey.
Rounding out the series is the villainous Jafar in his red genie form. There will also be a glow chase variant of Jafar, a rarity of 1-in-6! Books-A-Million will carry a variant “flocked” version of Rajah, while Hot Top will have the flocked Abu as an exclusive. A glitter variant of Jasmine will be a Barnes & Noble exclusive. All of wave 1 of Aladdin will hit stores this December.
For those wondering about the Genie and Jafar as just an evil wizard, versions of those characters were released years ago in different waves – but don’t be surprised if they show up again in second Aladdin wave at some point. And maybe even Iago the parrot too. Someone out there likes that annoying character, right? You can check out all of Aladdin wave 1 down below in our gallery.
