George R.R. Martin Says THE WINDS OF WINTER ‘Still a Priority’

The Winds of Winter is now 13 years (and counting) overdue. And no one, despite what some frustrated readers might think, is more aware of that fact than George R.R. Martin himself. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the author said even he can’t believe he’s taking this long to finish the next installment of A Song of Ice and Fire. Don’t give up on him or the book just yet, because he hasn’t. Even with all of his other literary and TV projects, Martin says The Winds of Winter is “still a priority.” Only, he can’t guarantee his doubters won’t end up being correct.

George R.R. Martin in his hat and gray vest sitting for an interviewCBS

Martin spoke to THR‘s Lily Ford to discuss the short films he’s financing based on the works of his late friend Howard Waldrop. Towards the end of the interview Ford asked about everyone’s favorite/most frustrating unfinished novel, The Winds of Winter. Ford refers to it as the “long-awaited sixth and final book” from A Song of Ice and Fire. That’s either a simple mistake or the biggest literary scoop of the year, because the truly maddening thing about Winds is that it’s not the final book Martin has planned. The planned ending for A Song of Ice and Fire is a seventh installment, A Dream of Spring.

As for the tardy sixth book, Martin is very aware how long he is taking. “Unfortunately, I am 13 years late,” he said“Every time I say that, I’m [like], ‘How could I be 13 years late?’ I don’t know, it happens a day at a time.”

Same, George. Same.

George R.R. Martin and Peter Dinklage as TyrionHBO

Unlike some of his more morbid readers, which he’s obviously very aware of, Martin still believes he will complete the novel he calls a priority. Only, he can’t guarantee his biggest skeptics won’t ultimately turn out to be correct. Martin said, “A lot of people are already writing obituaries for me. [They’re saying] ‘Oh, he’ll never be finished.’ Maybe they’re right. I don’t know. I’m alive right now! I seem pretty vital!”

And since he also said he’s not the retiring type and doesn’t golf, what else would he do?

Write a little faster, we hope.

How CREATURE COMMANDOS’ Circe Hints Toward a DCU Wonder Woman

The first episode of Creature Commandos introduced the first new villain into the DCU, the immortal sorceress Circe. Based on the witch of the same name from Greek mythology, Circe has immense magical powers. Considered a minor goddess, her most famous account came in Homer’s Odyssey, where she lured men to her island of Aeaea, turning them into animals. Naturally, this spellcaster from eventually became one of Wonder Woman’s most notorious foes. Thanks to her appearance in Creature Commandos, she’s also now officially DCU canon. But how does she differ from her DC Comics counterpart? Actually, there have been a few versions of Circe in the comics, going back to 1949. Before we get into her cinematic future, let’s dive into her comic book history.

Circe in DC Comics’ Golden and Silver AgesCirce in the Golden Age of comics (L) the Silver Age of comics (Center) and the Bronze Age of comics (R)DC Comics

Circe first appeared in DC Comics in the pages of Wonder Woman, but spent the better part of the next three decades as a villain for various DC heroes. In 1949’s Wonder Woman #37, the sorceress/demigoddess of Greek myth fought Diana Prince. This interpretation, a blonde bombshell, was created by writer Robert Kanigher and artist H.G. Peter. Diana’s mother Queen Hippolyta had banished her to an uninhabited planet for using dark magic. Once she escaped, she sought revenge on the Amazons. Ultimately, Circe was taken to the Amazonian Transformation Island to be reformed, after a battle with Wonder Woman. That was her last appearance as a Wonder Woman villain for over 30 years. In the ensuing Silver Age of comics, she mostly fought Superman and Supergirl, with never a mention of Wonder Woman. All of that would change in the early ’80s.

How Circe Became a Primary Wonder Woman EnemyCirce fights Wonder Woman in Wonder Woman vol. 1 #313. DC Comics

In 1983, Circe returned to the pages of Wonder Woman as a major villain. It was presumably the same Circe that plagued Superman and his allies years earlier, although they never explicitly say that she is. Her hair color and overall design were certainly different, suggesting a different character. Upon learning an ancient prophecy saying Diana would kill her, she’d spend several issues trying to take Wonder Woman out first. DC positioned Circe to be a major Wonder Woman villain like the Cheetah or Dr. Psycho. However, the universe-altering event Crisis on Infinite Earths in 1985 deleted this version of the character from continuity. But the best and most influential version of Circe was yet to come.

Circe in the Modern DC Comics EraCirce in the post-Crisis on Infinite Earths DC universe.DC Comics

In the post-Crisis DC universe, writer/artist George Perez reinvented Wonder Woman lore, tying her far more closely to Greek mythology. As a result, Circe became a major foe for Diana. In this version, Circe is still an immortal and powerful sorceress, powered by the goddess Hecate. She’s not an Amazon herself, but instead has a lifelong animosity towards the warrior women. She spent many centuries sowing discord between the sexes, and viewed Diana’s preaching of equality as a threat. And like in previous versions, Circe adhered to prophecies that suggested Diana would be her end, creating built-in animosity.

Circe in the modern era of DC Comics. DC Comics

From that point forward, Circe became Diana’s most persistent foe. Even more so than the war god Ares or the Cheetah. Circe often used her magic to empower Diana’s other enemies, and even took on another identity pretending to be Wonder Woman’s mortal friend to get close to her at one point. This version was sassy, sexy, and psychotic. She even inspired a memorable animated version in Justice League Unlimited. In the New 52 continuity, Circe became a part of the magic-based Injustice League Dark. She continues to plague Wonder Woman in comics to this day.

Creature Commandos‘ Version of the Immortal WitchThe witch Circe in Creature Commandos.Max

In Creature Commandos, Circe is described as a rogue Amazon sorceress who claims to be the rightful heir to the throne of Themyscira. This is a total departure from the comics, where Circe was never an Amazon, evil or otherwise. Interestingly, the news footage in the first episode of Creature Commandos says that she’s raising an army of men to conquer Themyscira. With this DCU version of Circe, we’ve learned a few key things about this Wonder Woman’s lore. For starters, one of her biggest enemies is now an Amazonian sister, which she was not before. In addition, we now know the world at large is aware of Wonder Woman’s homeland—even if not everyone believes it’s a real place.

With both of Wonder Woman’s two other most famous villains, Cheetah and Ares, already done in the old DCEU, it makes sense that Gunn would position Circe as her new “Big Bad.” Gunn has insisted that he wants animated actors and their live-action counterparts to be played by the same actor, so we may be seeing The Witcher actress Anya Chalotra casting spells against Diana Prince eventually. We don’t know who will play Wonder Woman yet, as it’s looking more and more unlikely that it’s Gal Gadot. But when she does appear, we think a battle with the ancient Greek witch is almost certainly in the cards.

SCRUBS Creator Bill Lawrence Working on Reboot

At its best Scrubs was the best. Yet somehow some overlook the series when listing the best shows of all-time. But that might change if a whole new generation of TV viewers get to find out what made the series special. A new report says Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence has begun working on a potential relaunch of the beloved series.

scrubs cast promo photoDoozer Productions

According to Variety, Bill Lawrence (Ted Lasso, Shrinking) is prepping for a possible return to Sacred Heart. Or he’s possibly looking to turn a different fictional hospital into the setting for a Scrubs reboot. Joe Otterson reports Lawrence is in early development of “a new iteration of the series.” There are no details about what the reboot could look like or who would star on it. None of the original stars are connected to the project (yet).

if it does move forward Lawrence will reportedly not serve as showrunner this time. He is developing the reboot at 20th Television. It recently brought ABC Studios under its banner. That’s where Scrubs moved for its final two seasons in 2009 and 2010 after leaving its first home at NBC after seven season. However, Lawrence has an overall deal with Warner Bros. Television. Variety‘s sources say Warner Bros. allows Lawrence leeway to work outside of that deal.

Donald Faison and Zach Braff make eyes at each other in Scrubs.Doozer Productions

Despite being off the air for almost 15 years, Scrubs is still very much a presence on TV thanks to co-stars/podcast hosts/real-life friends Zach Braff and Donald Faison. They’ve appeared in (roughly) 40 million T-Mobile commercials the last few years, all of which have a very Scrubs-adjacent vibe.

What would Dr. Cox think about those musical ads? We can probably definitely guess, but we’d still like to hear it from him directly. Whether or not we ever will remains to be seen. But even if this Scrubs reboot never happens this news is a great reminder to go rewatch the original version anyway.

CREATURE COMMANDOS Officially Makes THE SUICIDE SQUAD and PEACEMAKER Canon…Duh

Speculation, hinting, assumptions…these are the entertainment journalism stock and trade. It wouldn’t be big franchise media without it! But after weeks of tacit clarification from DC Studios head James Gunn, the first episode of Creature Commandos make it officially official. The events of The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker season one are canonical within the new DCU. Our long national nightmare is over.

[image error]Rick Flag and Amanda Waller take an elevator in Creature Commandos.Max

The moment of clarity came early in episode one of Creature Commandos as Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) and Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo) walk through the halls of Belle Reve Prison. In a brief conversation as the two head toward the monster wing of the facility, Waller expresses remorse over Flag’s son, Rick Jr. (Joel Kinnaman), dying during Operation Starfish. A moment later, Flag likewise references Waller’s daughter giving evidence against her. This, of course, alludes to agent Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks), a member of Team Peacemaker, who was surreptitiously reporting on the rest of the team.

In just that brief exchange, we understand what Gunn had been saying about “light canon” regarding some of the events of the DCEU. In previous interviews, the writer explained that anything from the DCEU could be canon in the DCU, but is only confirmed if stated outright in projects from Creature Commandos forward. He had also stated all of Peacemaker season one is canon, save for the brief Justice League cameo at the end, since the DCU Justice League hasn’t arrived yet.

Nina Mazursky, GI Robot, The Bride, Rick Flag Sr, Dr. Phosphorus, and Weasel in Creature Commandos.DC Studios

If Peacemaker is canon, it would almost necessitate that The Suicide Squad would have to be, at least somewhat. As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, it’s likely most of the characters from that film could simply carry over. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if Harley Quinn as played by Margot Robbie were retconned out so she could be reintroduced later on in Batman media. However, I’d be very okay if she remained the DCU’s Harley. Easily the best character in the old DCEU in my humble opinion.

We will, of course, see if any other DCEU events and characters carry over as the show continues. But for now? We can at least live in the realization that Creature Commandos is actually the third project in the DCU, not the first.

Creature Commandos episodes one and two streaming now on Max.

Marvel Celebrates HAWKEYE and Christmas with a Sitcom Intro-Style Gag Reel

This week MCU fans got a whole new way to watch one of the franchise’s best shows. Hawkeye was among the latest Disney+ series to get its very own collector’s edition 4K UHD Blu-ray. We celebrated the occasion by bringing you an exclusive look at a bonus deleted scene included on the home release. Now Marvel Studios is continuing the holiday party with an entertaining montage that captures the show’ festive setting. With Christmas just a couple of weeks away Disney gave Hawkeye its very own sitcom introduction-style gag reel. And even better? They set it to a classic Sammy Davis, Jr. song.

Clint, Kate, and everyone other star from Hawkeye are back in this behind-the-scenes video. It features heroes and villains alike having a good time during the show’s production.

*Old Wilson Fisk is apparently a real Scrooge about these things! But that’s fine, cause we got our very good boy Jolt to make us smile. JOLT!

Jeremy Renner smiling with a title card saying his name for a Hawkeye gag reelMarvel Studios

What really makes this Hawkeye gag reel video sweeter than most gag reels isn’t just the delightful nature of the clips themselves. It’s that the whole thing is set to the iconic Sammy Davis, Jr.’s “Sweet Gingerbread Man.” Whether you know the song and love it or never heard it before this is a pitch perfect choice for this show, which was truly a Christmas delight.

The bonus deleted scene we debuted earlier this week and this very enjoyable gag reel are great reminders of why even “streaming shows” deserve the home release treatment. Simply watching a show is just one way to enjoy it. The great promise of DVDs was that they gave us so much more access to the films and shows we loved. And we really loved Hawkeye when it debuted. Now we have even more ways to love it.

This NOSFERATU Perfume Is a Chilling, Pale, and Otherworldly Scent for Your Moonlight Adventures (Review)

Nosferatu isn’t even in theaters yet, but it is already setting the internet on fire with its trailers and stellar reviews. This fresh take on a chilling classic story is certainly one to watch when it hits theaters on Christmas Day. And while you probably won’t ever get the twisted pleasure of being the apple of a vampire’s eye, you can at least evoke the vibes by smelling like this Gothic horror film. All you need is a couple spritzes of Heretic Parfum’s Nosferatu perfume and just maybe you’ll attract someone’s attention after all. We grabbed a sample of the Nosferatu perfume and we must say it smells wonderful.

image of Heretic Nosferatu perfume bottleHeretic Parfum/Focus Features

This limited-edition and custom scent, aptly titled Nosferatu, is in direct partnership with Focus Features and boasts a clean yet sophisticated fragrance. It will work well if you like to layer your scenes, giving a dash of floral, a little woody, some earthy, and more. There’s a hint of something it its combination that will delight a variety cologne and perfume wearers, especially those who love a scent that plays well with moonlight adventures.

Here’s a rather colorful yet surprisingly accurate description of Heretic’s Nosferatu

What does the world of a vampire smell like? Heretic x Nosferatu present a scent that is also an apparition; otherworldly, straddling a line between this world and the next. Petrichor, lilac, ambergris, and oud form a beautifully pale and pellucid chord that will haunt you, but in the best way possible.

Thankfully, a little Nosferatu goes a long way to make you smell far better than the undead throughout the day. It hangs in the air, much like a spirit would, but not in an overly strong and off-putting way. And its price point of $125 for a 30ml bottle feels like a bargain for its quality.

In fact, we love this Heretic scent so much that we are giving away a bottle to a lucky Nerdist reader! Enter here for your chance to win a 30ml sized bottle of the Nosferatu perfume.

BALLERINA, the JOHN WICK Spinoff Movie, Shares Slick New Poster and CCXP Panel Streaming Link

The world of John Wick is a sprawling one. Although the main franchise of movies focuses on a narrow slice of one assassin’s life, there’s a lot in the universe to explore. And now, John Wick will get its first cinematic spinoff with the Ballerina movie. We still have a lot of questions about how the movie will connect into the main John Wick universe and what exact story it will tell. But we do know, we can’t wait to immerse ourselves back into this deadly web of underground criminals and assassins. This time Ana de Armas will serve as our guide.

And boy does she look slick and stylish in this Ballerina official poster! This poster debuted during this year’s CCXP, and you can tune into Ballerina‘s live panel via YouTube on December 8 at 2PM PT/5 PM ET.

Here’s everything we know about the John Wick spinoff movie, Ballerina.

TitleAna de Armas will lead the John Wick spin-off Ballerina, de Armas in a dress and a gunUniversal Pictures

The title of this John Wick movie is Ballerina, alluding to the main character’s training as both dancer and assassin in the Ruska Roma.

Ballerina‘s Plot

Plot details for Ballerina are still sparse. A logline for the movie simply shares:

The world of John Wick expands with BALLERINA, as Ana de Armas stars as an assassin trained in the traditions of the Ruska Roma.

Angelica Huston and Keanue Reeves in John Wick Chapter 3Lionsgate

That description tells us more about the character than the movie, but we do know a few more bits and pieces. According to Deadline, “Ballerina focuses on a young female assassin who seeks revenge against the people who killed her family.” But whether one of those people is John Wick himself, we still don’t know. Potentially, the family Armas’ character wants to avenge is actually her family from the Ruska Roma, who were left hurting in John Wick: Parabellum.

Keanu Reeves, who will appear in the film as John Wick, gave us a better idea of when Ballerina takes place on the John Wick timeline. He noted that the movie fits in between John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4. So, although the movie will release after Chapter 4, it will take us back in time. And we’re grateful for it because we can’t wait to see Reeves in action as our favorite assassin.

Ballerina‘s CastKeanu Reeves in a black suit and shirt in Chapter 3- ParabellumLionsgate

Ana de Armas will star in Ballerina. Joining her are quite a number of members of the John Wick family as well as some new faces. First, as mentioned, John Wick himself, Keanu Reeves, will return in Ballerina. We don’t know yet how big of a role he’ll have in the movie. In addition, Ian McShane is set to reprise his John Wick role as Winston, the manager of The Continental Hotel, in Ballerina. Anjelica Huston will also return as The Director in the John Wick movie as well. Her presence, of course, makes a lot of sense considering the heavy presence of the Ruska Roma in the little information we’ve received so far. The late Lance Reddick will also return as Charon, one of the concierges at the Continental Hotel, in the movie. Sadly, the actor recently passed away, but it seems he had already filmed his appearance.

Daryl Dixon from the Walking Dead sits on his motorcycle in finale survivor survived episodeJace Downs/AMC

Joining the John Wick franchise, Catalina Sandino Moreno and Gabriel Byrne will star opposite of de Armas. In addition, The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus has joined the cast of Ballerina. Finally, Deadline reports that two actors joined the movie during reshoots, Umbrella Academy‘s David Castañeda and Sharon Duncan-Brewster.

Behind the Scenes

Behind the camera, Len Wiseman will direct Ballerina. Shay Hatten, meanwhile, penned the script. Reports indicate that Emerald Fennell also assisted in its writing. John Wick director Chad Stahelski will serve as a producer on the movie alongside Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee.

Ballerina‘s Release Date

Ballerina was set to release on June 7, 2024, but reportedly its release date has moved to June 6, 2025.

DOCTOR WHO Christmas Special Trailer Teases Two Doctors and a Hotel Full of Time Portals

Doctor Who’s Christmas specials have become a staple for the long-running franchise since its return to TV back in 2005. (Yes, it’s hard to believe the show has been back on air for 20 years!) Those high-octane and often self-contained stories are easy for both dedicated fans and casual/new fans alike to dive into. And it seems this year’s event will be no different as the Fifteenth Doctor takes us to the Time Hotel to celebrate Christmas (and fight villains) in many different places. The trailer for the Doctor Who Christmas special, delightfully titled “Joy to the World,” boasts dinosaurs, train adventures, two Doctors, and so much more.

This clip packs in a lot in just one minute. We see the Doctor arrive at the Time Hotel, a place where Christmas is apparently happening in many places at once. I really appreciate the hotel’s lovely decor and airy atrium. If only it was a real place to visit on vacation. Anyway, the Doctor quickly goes on a mission of sorts and crosses paths with Joy (Nicola Coughlan), someone who is staying in a room and having a not-so-fun encounter with a Silurian.

Some seriously timey wimey things go down as we see one version of the Doctor ask another version of himself how to get from point A to point B. It will be interesting to see how it all goes down. We even get a little flashback at Ruby leaving the TARDIS, so it is likely that the Doctor is missing her and happy to have Joy by his side.

Here’s a quick synopsis of the Doctor Who Christmas special trailer to further bring things into focus:

When Joy checks into a London hotel in 2024, she opens a secret doorway to the Time Hotel — discovering danger, dinosaurs and the Doctor. But a deadly plan is unfolding across the Earth, just in time for Christmas.

We also have a little more casting information, too. Joining Gatwa and Coughlan is Steph de Whalley as Anita, Jonathan Aris as Melnak, Joel Fry as Trev, Peter Benedict as Basil, Julia Watson as Hilda and Niamh Marie Smith as Sylvia. And, of course, this episode was executive produced and written by the great Steven Moffat with Alex Sanjiv Pillai as its director.

What Is the Premiere Date and Time for the Doctor Who Christmas Special?

“Joy to the World” will hit Disney+ plus on Christmas Day at 9:10AM PT/12:10PM ET.

James Gunn Clarifies the DCU’s “Light Canon” Regarding the DCEU

The gosh darn DCU hasn’t even really kicked off yet and we’re already up to our eyes with canon confusion. It seems like it’ll be a fresh start, with brand new iterations of Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, and the gang. But, Peacemaker season two is happening. Season one was a direct continuation of Gunn’s own The Suicide Squad, a movie firmly ensconced in trappings of the DCEU. Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) debuted in the garbage Suicide Squad movie, for gosh sakes. Well, it’s actually much simpler than it seems.

Peacemaker season two gets a DCU update from James Gunn, creator's next projectMax

James Gunn, who’s on the press tour for the animated series Creature Commandos, has been fielding this question left, right, and center. Luckily for the head of DC Studios—and for all of us—is he has an answer. Whatever happened has happened, but only if titles from here on out reference them. It’s “light canon.” It’s a fun way of saying “we’ll use what we want, thank you very much.”

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Gunn said “Peacemaker is pretty straightforward, with the exception of the appearance by a certain group at the end. They don’t exist yet.” This of course refers to the Justice League cameo at the end of season one. “But the rule is: If we mention [something from the past] in one of the new DCU shows [and movies], then it happened. So that’s the way we’re dealing with it.”

This, of course, makes perfect sense. Gunn joined the DCEU basically at the very end and his influence filled a void left by Zack Snyder and Joss Whedon’s influence. The Suicide Squad was in every way that counted a standalone movie from the previous DCEU, with the exception of Amanda Waller, Harley Quinn, and a few other ill-fated squadders. Creature Commandos directly follows up from both The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker season one. Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. is the father of the Rick Flag who died in The Suicide Squad. Rick Flag Sr. will also feature prominently in Peacemaker season two. Weasel was in The Suicide Squad and Creature Commandos.

Now, stuff we don’t know is whether Margot Robbie will be the DCU’s Harley Quinn or if the new version of the events of The Suicide Squad will omit her from the record. But the mission itself, Operation Starfish, is “light canon,” or at least presumably is. Get it?

Nina Mazursky, GI Robot, The Bride, Rick Flag Sr, Dr. Phosphorus, and Weasel in Creature Commandos.DC Studios

Honestly, don’t worry about it too much. It’ll be important if it’s important. But I think it’s very likely we won’t see much of the old DCEU that Gunn himself didn’t have a direct hand in. And Blue Beetle which seems like it’ll still be canon.

Creature Commandos debuts on Max Thursday December 5.

KFC’s Tamagotchi-Inspired Toys Lets You Have a Drumstick as a Pet

Fried chicken is a food staple for many people. Is it healthy? No. Do we care? Also no. There’s a ton of ways to batter it up with different seasonings and enjoy that lovely crunch followed by the tenderness of the chicken. When it comes to restaurants, none of them are as famous for their chicken as KFC. Its original name literally has “fried chicken” in it and the story of those 11 herbs and spices is an American legend that’s gone worldwide. KFC is global, including in Spain where they are really celebrating fried chicken by turning it into a Tamagotchi… sort of. Meet Eduardochi, a digital fried chicken drumstick pet that you must attend to constantly, lest you want it to die.

I can totally understand making this KFC Tamagotchi (excuse me, Eduardochi) device look like a tiny drumstick. But having a little black drummy make a stinky poo and eat snacks is nuts. Check out this video celebrating this bizarre new toy:

Following a pop-up event in Madrid, Eduardochi is available in the KFC app and on its website for fans over there. Sadly, us Americans will have to depend on resellers to nab one but, even now, the resale is only around $30 for some, which isn’t too terrible considering they are at market value for a little over $4. We assume they aren’t the most durable Tamagotchi inspired toys but the chance to take care of a KFC drumstick is too good to pass up.
