DEADPOOL Movie Costume is Off Limits for Marvel Comics

The costume worn by Ryan Reynolds in the first two Deadpool movies is remarkable for its fidelity to the source material. It’s not an exact replica of the outfit worn by Wade Wilson in the comics, but it is very true to the spirit of it. However, there are apparently rules in place which will keep Marvel from using the Deadpool movie costume in the Deadpool comics, even as a throwaway gag.

Via Syfy Wire, artist Reilly Brown revealed that he attempted to use Deadpool’s movie costume in a recent issue of Spider-Man/Deadpool. Within the context of the story, Deadpool is working as a stuntman on the set of a Deadpool movie. The movie suit was just meant to be a visual callback to the real films, but Brown was forced to take it out.

Someone asked if I’d ever drawn Deadpool in his movie costume, and I actually did once, for an issue of Spideypool. In this story, Wade got a part in a Deadpool movie playing as the stunt double. For the scenes on set, I thought it would be fun if he wore the actual movie costume, so that’s what I drew. I didn’t think anyone would notice or care, since the difference is just a couple of straps and some knee pads. But they did notice, and made me change it back to his typical character design, because the lawyers wouldn’t allow them to use the movie costume for some reason! So weird. So I had to redraw that Deadpool in all those scenes. The moral of the story: study your licensing deals! #dailydeadpool #spideypool #deadpool #costumes #freelancelife #reillybrown

In a subsequent post, Brown shared a panel where he intended to “vaguely” use Reynolds’ likeness for the actor playing Deadpool in the comic. That was also shut down by Marvel, so he redrew the face and gave the actor a mustache.

In the comic, there was an actor who was playing Deadpool in a movie, so I figured I’d make him look vaguely like Ryan Reynolds. The guys at Marvel thought this looked too much like him, so I had to make a change at the last minute. So I put a mustache on him. Heh, honestly I don’t even blame them for this one, sometimes you just have to see what you can get away with

Custom VHS Player Art Honors Sci-Fi And Horror Classics

As evidenced by the success of properties like Ready Player One and Stranger Things, we are currently smack dab in the middle of nostalgia boom for a certain era of films and television. Thanks to the folks at Killer Kitsch, we’ve learned about one artist who is paying tribute to the glory days of VCRs (that means Video Cassette Recorder, you young-os), VHS rentals, and the local mom n’ pop video store. Going by the name  Sorce122, or @sorce_codeVHS, he describes himself as “a nomadic artist traveling the country in my 1984 GMC Vandura that I’ve converted into a mobile art studio.” Since January 2016, he’s been customizing VCR’s for his fellow film buffs and horror hounds. He’s created 38 different machines so far, and with 10 more orders waiting. Most recently, his work can be seen on the special features of Arrow videos new release of the cult classic Basket Case.

While it might be easy to just pass it off as nostalgia for the ’80s, I would go as far as to say it’s bigger than just that one decade — it’s the era that began in 1977 with Star Wars and maybe culminated with 1993’s Jurassic Park. For those of us who grew up in that pop culture sweet spot (like yours truly), this was a golden era for one specific reason — it was the first time in history we could affordably own or rent movies and watch them over and over, and all that was thanks to the advent of VHS.

So how did this unique form of art come about? According to the artist, you can thank one horror classic in particular. “I was inspired to customize my first VCR while watching the Texas Chainsaw Massacre on VHS and looking at poster designs. I realized the dimensions were the same as the machine and I visualized a giant VHS movie box that could also play the film.” You can check out examples of Sorce122’s work, which pay homage to classics like Jaws, The Evil Dead trilogy, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Jurassic Park, and Twin Peaks,  all down below in our gallery. To look into prices and check out new artistic projects, be sure to pay a visit to Sorce CodeVhs over on Facebook and Instagram

What do you make of these literal “way back machines?” Let us know your thoughts down below in the comments.

OCEAN’S 8 Looks Like Way More Fun Than OCEAN’S 11

There’s just something so dizzyingly fun about watching a bunch of women go bad. Though Sheryl Sandberg would probably not be too keen on this level of leaning in, we’re thrilled that this many badass babes are going all-in on the comedic heist front. And based on the character teasers released on Wednesday in support of the forthcoming Ocean’s 8, we’re getting characters that are sure to be just as memorable, if not more so, than the dudes that went to Vegas to rob a couple casinos.

Gone are the days of Danny Ocean. In his stead? An estranged sister named Debbie (played by Sandra Bullock), out of jail and ready to go ham on at the Met Gala in order to steal an incredibly expensive piece of jewelry (worth $150 million). And just like the earlier films, this one has an incredible cast filled with some fantastic characters—the videos for which were released on Twitter throughout the day.

Watch them and try not to fall in love with this movie—we dare you.

This Simulator Shows What Would Happen if a Nuke Dropped on Your City

Nuclear war is a scary if somewhat confusing scenario due to a lack of real-world applicability. To this day, there have been only two examples of nuclear weapons used in combat, and that was more than 70 years ago during World War II. Most of us don’t know what, exactly, happens when a nuclear weapon is detonated. What does that blast look like? How many lives would it claim? A new simulator from the Outrider Foundation is here to answer some of those questions.

“Experience the power of a nuclear blast in your area,” the intro page prompts. After typing in a location, the site directs you to a map showing the impact and effects of the blast. If a W-87 hit Chicago, for instance, the simulator anticipates a death toll of roughly 373,257 with another 246,745 injuries. The blast would be so hot it would be felt from 50 miles away. If it was hit with a weapon like the Tsar Bomba–a Soviet hydrogen bomb that remains the most powerful nuclear weapon ever created–the death toll would rise to over two million, with a heat radius of 3,200 miles.

The more you click around, the more fascinating information you can uncover. The simulator goes into depth about the results of radiation poisoning and what it does to a body (spoiler alert: nothing good), and other little-known side effects of a nuclear detonation, like the shock wave that occurs from the center of the blast and results in hurricane-force winds.

The Outrider Foundation, a Wisconsin-based educational nonprofit, created the simulator to warn about the dangers of nuclear weapons in an easy-to-understand format. Their website also features timelines of nuclear warfare, from WWII to the Cold War to current tensions between the United States and North Korea. Outrider’s ultimate goal is to create a world “where people live without fear of nuclear annihilation or climate-induced catastrophe.”

What do you think about Outrider’s simulator? Does it scare you, or do you find it fascinating? Let us know in the comments!

Did the Russo Brothers Confirm Our MCU/X-Men Theory?

Following the unprecedented success of Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War looks like it may be an even bigger box office beast. The early tracking has Infinity War heading towards a $200 million opening weekend. It’s not surprising, considering it has almost every hero who has appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date. How could Marvel possibly top that? Infinity War directors Anthony and Joe Russo may have inadvertently given away some long term plans. Today’s Nerdist News is examining whether the Russos have just confirmed our theory about how the X-Men and Fantastic Four could be added to the MCU.

Join our guest host, senior editor Dynamic Dan Casey, as he pours over the possibility of Marvel’s Secret Wars. During a recent interview with French outlet Linternaute, the Russos seemed to be very interested in making a Secret Wars movie with all of Marvel’s heroes once the Disney and Fox deal finally closes. There have been a few Secret Wars in Marvel’s comic book universe, but the core concept of the original storyline from 1984 and the modern event in 2015 found the heroes and villains transported to Battleworld, a patchwork planet made of many different worlds from across the cosmos.

We’ve previously postulated that a Secret Wars movie would be an ideal way to bring together the disparate X-Men and Fantastic Four films with the rest of the MCU.  Despite Fox’s best attempts, The X-Men and FF never really shared a universe, . Those characters simply don’t exist in the MCU as it currently stands. And they almost certainly won’t keep the same cast for the inevitable Marvel reboot movies.

Therefore, Secret Wars would be our only opportunity to entice the original big screen X-Men, perhaps even Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, to return one last time for the ultimate superhero showdown before the conclusion merges the universes into one cohesive whole. From that point on, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and even Deadpool would have a place in the MCU. Theoretically, it could potentially blow Infinity War out of the water in terms of scale and characters. We’d love to see it happen.

How do you feel about a potential Secret Wars movie? Assemble in the comment section below and let us know!

New COBRA KAI Teasers Introduce the Next Karate Kids

Next month, the decades-long rivalry that began in The Karate Kid will reignite in Cobra Kai, YouTube Red‘s new original series. Both Ralph Macchio and William Zabka are reprising their roles as Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence, respectively. But while the tables have turned for Johnny and Daniel-san, their enmity may live on with their children in unexpected ways. Three new Cobra Kai teasers have set the stage for a new generation and unveiled the latest Karate Kids.

First up is Miguel Diaz, as played by Xolo Maridueña. Miguel appears to be the character most like Daniel in the first film. Miguel is bullied at school and he comes under the tutelage of a karate master who wants to improve his life. Unfortunately for Miguel, his sensei isn’t a gentle soul like Mr. Miyagi. Johnny’s his mentor, and he has no mercy for anyone, not even his students.

Daniel’s daughter, Samantha LaRusso (Mary Mouser), makes her debut in the second teaser. While Miguel’s teaser included a glimpse of the All-Valley Karate Tournament, it doesn’t appear Sam will be fighting there. However, she has picked up some karate from her dad. But Daniel won’t be very happy when he learns Sam is dating Miguel.

The last video focuses on Robby Keene (Tanner Buchanan). Don’t let his last name fool you, because he is Johnny’s son. Unfortunately for Johnny, he and Robby don’t exactly have a close relationship. And even Robby is throwing Johnny’s loss to Daniel back in his face. Harsh, bro!

The first episode of Cobra Kai will premiere on May 2.

What do you think about the new Karate Kids? Let’s break a few boards in the comment section below!

New Ransomware Wants You To Play PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS

Since its debut last year, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has been one of our favorite multiplayer battle royale games. But someone may be taking their love for the game a little bit too far with a malware program which encrypts your files. Instead of ransoming your personal info for exorbitant amounts of money, the program asks players to play Battlegrounds.

Via Kotaku and Bleeping Computer, the PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds ransomware was discovered by Malware Hunter Team, and it is real. While the PUBG Ransomeware actually works, it’s being treated as a joke since the programmer included a note that said “Your files is [encrypted] by PUBG Ransomeware! But don’t worry! It is not that hard to unlock it. I don’t want money! Just play PUBG 1Hours.” It doesn’t even take an hour of gameplay to unlock the files. According to the reports, three minutes of gameplay will do the the trick. Also, the programmer included an unlock code, which means there’s really nothing to ransom.

This is perhaps one of the most benign ransomware programs in recent memory, and it’s the only one that makes us smile. It is a little disturbing to see how easily a ransomware program can spread and take control of sensitive files. But the idea of being “forced” to play PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is the perfect cover for getting out of work.

Can you imagine what will happen if this ransomware catches on? Whole offices could be shut down until we get in a few rounds of Overwatch or Fortnite. Actually, we kind of like that idea.

A ‘New’ J.R.R. Tolkien Book Coming This Year

Though he passed away 45 years ago, the world is luckily not in any shortage of works by J.R.R. Tolkien. Just last week we told you details about Amazon’s historic (and expensive) bid for the series rights to The Lord of the Rings saga, and now we have news that we’ll be getting a brand new–err, brand old, I guess–Tolkien book to add to our shelves. As The Guardian reports, a long-unfinished, very early Tolkien story has been edited by his son Christopher Tolkien for publication in 2018. It’s called The Fall of Gondolin and it details one of Middle-earth’s oldest and most important legends.

Tolkien once called the fable about the mysterious and beautiful city of Gondolin’s downfall at the hands of dark forces the first “real story” in his Lord of the Rings universe. He wrote it while in hospital recovering from wounds suffered in World War I’s Battle of Somme, in 1916, 102 years ago for people counting. Christopher Tolkien, who is now 93 himself, said last year’s publication of Beren and Luthien would be “(presumptively) my last book in the long series of editions of my father’s writings.” Not so, it would appear!

John Garth, author of Tolkien and the Great War, said of The Fall of Gondolin: “It’s a quest story with a reluctant hero who turns into a genuine hero – it’s a template for everything Tolkien wrote afterwards.” He also said it featured precursors to some of the author’s greatest villains. “It has a dark lord, our first encounter with orcs and balrogs,” Garth continued. “It’s really Tolkien limbering up for what he would be doing later.”

The story follows one of the Noldor, an ancient race of elves, as he joins the fight against the evil Morgoth to stop the destruction of Gondolin, meeting up with the great sea-god Ulmo along the way. Tolkien said this story, along with Beren and Luthien and The Children of Hurin, was one of the “Great Tales” of the elder days of Middle-earth.

The book is expected to release in August and feature illustrations by the legendary The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings illustrator Alan Lee.
