Patton Oswalt Credits Michelle McNamara’s Book for Helping Find the Golden State Killer

Sometimes, the road to justice takes a long, long time. Such was the case with the so-called “Golden State Killer,” who was finally arrested this week after four decades. Unlike famous serial killers like Ted Bundy or John Wayne Gacy, most people had never heard of the Golden State Killer, a criminal suspected of 12 murders, over 50 rapes, and more than 120 burglaries since the ’70s. And that’s because he eluded the authorities for decades.

But writer Michelle McNamara spent years trying to discover the identity of the killer; she was working on a book about the case when she passed away suddenly in 2016. Her book, I’ll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman’s Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer, was finished posthumously and published earlier this year with the help of true crime writer Paul Haynes and McNamara’s widower Patton Oswalt and became a bestseller. Oswalt believes the light she shone on the case ultimately helped steer modern investigators to the door of 72-year-old former police officer, Joseph James DeAngelo as the prime suspect, on Tuesday.

Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones stated during a news conference on Wednesday that the book didn’t lead to the arrest “other than the fact that it, like the media, kept this in the public eye, kept public interest. It kept interest and tips coming in.” A breakthrough with DNA testing helped the authorities find DeAngelo.

But Oswalt thinks the book helped. In an appearance on Late Night with Seth Myers, he talked about his late wife’s dream of finally seeing the Golden State Killer being placed behind bars come true. You can see Patton Oswalt talk about how his wife only wanted to see justice finally done, and how her words to the killer that she wrote in the book ended up prophetically coming true, words that were tweeted out by many as news of the killer’s arrest became known.

#MichelleMcNamara’s haunting words for the #GoldenStateKiller my God she’s amazing #IllBeGoneInTheDark pic.twitter.com/KQ7G1Rk3UF

Pretty much exactly as #MichelleMcNamara described it in her “Letter To An Old Man” at the end of #IllBeGoneInTheDark. Footsteps, door knock. #GoldenStateKiller https://t.co/S1TlTpBEbH

— Patton Oswalt (@pattonoswalt) April 25, 2018

Also, the cops will NEVER and HAVE NEVER credited a writer or journalist for helping them solve a case. But every time they said #GoldenStateKiller they credited the work of #MichelleMcNamara and #IllBeGoneInTheDark.

— Patton Oswalt (@pattonoswalt) April 25, 2018

What do you think of this amazing story? And do you agree with me that McNamara should get a posthumous Pulitzer for her work on this book, which led to the killer’s arrest? Let us know down below in the comments.

The Latest Movie News on STAR TREK, CLOVERFIELD, PREDATOR, GLASS and More

There’s been an avalanche of news from this year’s CinemaCon, so on today’s Nerdist News Talks Back we broke down the latest on the future of Star Trek, Cloverfield, Predator, Jurassic World, Aquaman, and more, along with our reactions to the new Star Wars animated series.

Hosting again today was Dan Casey, and he was joined by producers Jason Nguyen, Derek Johnson, and Ben McShane. They started by hitting the hyperdrive on the newest cartoon from the galaxy far, far away, the upcoming Star Wars Resistance. The anime-inspired series will explore the time before The Force Awakens, with Oscar Isaac and Gwendoline Christie voicing Poe and Phasma. What do we think of this setting? Would we have preferred a different time period? What anime shows do we hope they take inspiration from? Will this help fix the issues with Phasma’s story from the films? And what other media formats would we like to see Star Wars creators try their (mechanical) hand at?

But with so much news coming out of CinemaCon–movie theater owners’ very own SDCC, held in Las Vegas where they get sneak peaks at upcoming films–they had to break down all of it, including reports we are getting two Star Trek sequels. If one is the Quentin Tarantino film, what could the second be? What do we hope it is? Are we more excited for that or J.J. Abrams’ mysterious next Cloverfield film? Or did Cloverfield Paradox burn us out on the franchise? And are we still excited over his R-rated WWII Overlord film?

Speaking of sequels, does anyone want a followup to A Quiet Place? Should the movie get to stand on its own? What do we think of Shane Black’s upcoming The Predator, which will see the alien hunters upgrading themselves with DNA from other species? Do we think M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass will be a hit? And when it comes to seeing more and more footage from big budget blockbusters, would we actually prefer if studios took a “less is more” approach?

Remember, Nerdist News Talks Back airs live on our YouTube and Alpha channels Monday through Thursday at 1 p.m. PT, and tomorrow make sure you tune into our hour long Nerdist News What the Fridays, where we recap the week’s biggest pop culture stories. NNWTF airs at 1 p.m. PT exclusively at Alpha. So join us and be a part of the conversation, especially because this week had all the news.

What do you think about today’s topics? Talk back to us in the comments below.

Kevin Feige Reveals His Big MCU Mistake

In just a few short hours, Avengers: Infinity War‘s preview screenings will begin and the early indications are that it will have one of the biggest opening weekends of all-time. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has achieved the formerly impossible dream after ten years of Marvel movies. But that doesn’t mean Feige hasn’t made a few mistakes along the way. Today’s spoiler free Nerdist News throws the spotlight on two of Feige’s biggest MCU regrets.

Join guest host Dan Casey as he goes over recent interviews with Feige in which Marvel’s head honcho owned up to two of his biggest MCU mistakes. The first one is Thor‘s face, specifically his eyebrows. Feige had Thor star Chris Hemsworth dye his eyebrows to match his character’s hair color in his first solo movie. Now, Feige definitely feels that was the wrong call.

However, that’s not the error currently haunting Feige. According to his recent chat with IGN, Feige’s decision to withhold the title of Avengers 4 has completely backfired. When the studio changed the name from Infinity War Part 2, Feige hoped it would keep the conversation focused on Infinity War. Instead, it’s had the opposite effect. Now, there’s so much hype for the real title of Avengers 4 that even Feige doesn’t believe the reveal will live up to the expectations.

That conversation also shed some light on why Marvel has become even more secretive regarding its upcoming projects. Feige feels announcing every Phase 3 movie in 2014 took some of the shine off of Avengers: Age of Ultron. It should be noted Age of Ultron was still a huge hit, so it’s debatable whether it was truly a mistake for Marvel to share its plans with fans. But if Feige believes it was a mistake to openly plan that far ahead then it probably means we won’t learn about new MCU films until they start getting closer to production.

What do you think about Feige’s MCU regrets? Let’s discuss in the comment section below!

STAR TREK 4 Gets Film Franchise’s First Female Director

The starship Enterprise is going to boldly go in a different, belated direction because a female director is in talks to helm Star Trek 4. Finally. Via Variety, S.J. Clarkson (Jessica Jones, The Defenders, Orange is the New Black) will be the first female director in the Star Trek film franchise. Meanwhile The Hollywood Reporter reports Paramount is focused on finding a female director for the upcoming movie and is only in the “in talks” phase with Clarkson.

Star Trek 4 is the next film in the rebooted series that launched in 2009 (not the Quentin Tarantino Trek movie that’s in development). J.J. Abrams is on board as producer, and the script is being handled by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay.

Considering that there have been 13 Star Trek films, it’s about time for a woman to have a chance to tell a story set within the beloved sci-fi universe. This is a time when studios need to take steps towards equality behind the scenes in the world of film and television. Progress still needs to be made, but with recent high-profile movie releases from the likes of Patty Jenkins and Ava DuVernay, and a franchise like Star Trek getting a female director, the future is looking a little more optimistic. So, hey, Lucasfilm, maybe you could be the next franchise to take the long overdue step of hiring a female director.

Is Wakanda Prepared for Thanos in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR?

While Avengers: Infinity War was filmed under intensely secretive conditions, it’s common knowledge that Wakanda plays an important part in the most ambitious entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date. After getting to know King T’Challa’s homeland in Black Panther—and seeing it go through a crisis of conscience in relation to its position on the global stage—we could not help but wonder if the most technologically advanced nation in the world is prepared for a threat as grand as Thanos and his murderous lieutenants. To find out, we sent our correspondent Markeia McCarty to a recent Infinity War press day in Los Angeles where she sat down with Chadwick Boseman (T’Challa/Black Panther), Danai Gurira (Okoye), and thirstfest Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/Hulk) to talk about how Wakanda has changed since we saw it in Black Panther, how Okoye and the Dora Milaje would handle a threat like Thanos, and the existential identity crisis in which Bruce Banner finds himself heading into this dark chapter in the MCU’s timeline.

“Wakanda is very strong in its tradition and its open to growing and evolving and progressing, but it also has to hold onto its roots at the same time,” Boseman said of Wakanda’s changing politics. “There’s a balance there. Whether or not they’re going to let in refugees, of course that’s insinuated based on the argument between him and Nakia. But it’s going to be on its own terms, and everything it does with the rest of the world is going to be on its own terms because they are a superpower and they have the right to do it however they want to.”

Speaking of superpowers, they’re going to need them in spades when Thanos and the Black Order invade Wakanda’s sovereign lands. But would a character as tempestuous and mercurial as the Hulk ultimately be a help or a hindrance to the Avengers and their allies in this cosmic clash?

“I think he can only be a help,” Ruffalo told us. “I think there’s always been a question of whether Banner is a hindrance or a help without the Hulk by himself, and I think we get into answer that in the course of these movies…and maybe we don’t. I think Banner has often wondered what his worth is to the Avengers without the Hulk, and that’s something we get into a bit in Thor [Ragnarok]. I think that carries on throughout at least the next movie. Did that spoil anything?”

Boseman assured Ruffalo that it didn’t spoil anything, but you’ll have to watch the movie to see for yourself. In the meantime, why not read our spoiler-free review to see what you’re in for?

Avengers: Infinity War opens on April 27, 2018.

Stephen King’s THE LONG WALK Coming to the Big Screen

Even though he has spent the last few decades being one of the most successful and prolific authors of all-time, all while also having countless works of his adapted into famous films and mini-series, Stephen King has never been hotter. That’s because after the smash box office success of It Hollywood can’t get enough of the horror maven. Now one of his darkest and best novels, The Long Walk, is making its way to the big screen, and it couldn’t come at a better time.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, New Line Cinema, which produced last year’s It, has begun development on an adaptation of King’s 1979 novel, with James Vanderbilt (Zodiac, The Amazing Spider-Man films) writing the screenplay. Vanderbilt had apparently tried to obtain the movie’s rights for a decade, which he finally acquired after Frank Darabont lost them.

The premise of the novel is simple but terrifying. It takes place in alternate, totalitarian United States, where every year 100 teenage boys participate in “The Long Walk” contest. Starting at the Maine/Canadian border they start walking down I-95 and are required to maintain a certain speed–no matter what–to avoid being eliminated, and the last survivor wins. It’s incredibly tense, and that only grows as the hours and days pass and the group gets smaller. It’s also incredibly dark even for King, which is no surprise since he wrote it under his pseudonym and bleaker alter ego, Richard Bachman.

But it’s also smart and insightful, and its message is particularly timely right now. That’s because, while there are no demons, creatures, or ghosts, the boys all volunteer for the walk, despite knowing 99 of them won’t be going home. In this messed-up world society has not only accepted being ruled by a fascist, they are eager to assist in their own control, which is far more terrifying. And sadly it feels all too timely in 2018.

The Long Walk to make it to the big screen for a long time now, so we’re thrilled in their mad rush Hollywood finally realized they should have been running to make it.

What do you hope to see with this film? Tell us in the comments below.

STAR TREK: DISCOVERY Season 2 Teaser Reveals Original Series Uniforms

Star Trek: Discovery has given us our first glimpse at season two of the series with an all new trailer, which commemorates the start of production for the new season. You can check it out below, and then we’ll unpack all the new goodies this trailer gives us.

Thrusters on full! Production has begun on season 2 of #StarTrekDiscovery! Season 1 now streaming: https://t.co/yrMuoDTRl9 pic.twitter.com/mIRSQljvyy

— Star Trek: Discovery (@startrekcbs) April 26, 2018

So what have we gleaned? For starters, we see Star Trek 2009 and Star Trek Into Darkness co-writer Alex Kurtzman directing the first episode of the season, as was recently announced. But even more interesting is that we see the original series uniforms being made, and what appears to be the back of the Enterprise‘s Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), all decked out in original series gold. We all see a screenshot of the original series red mini-skirt uniform, so it seems we’ll finally get an answer as to why the Enterprise design aesthetic is totally different to the rest of Starfleet at this time.

It’s also interesting to note the voice overs we hear for this trailer are from actor Jeffrey Hunter (the original Captain Pike from the first Star Trek pilot “The Cage”) as well as some from Leonard Nimoy as Spock. We know a younger Spock will appear in flashbacks, but this is our first hint that an older Spock will appear. No actor has been cast yet for the role, at least officially. In addition, we see many sets being constructed, including one which looks like it could be the bridge of the original Enterprise. Could Discovery finally be giving us episodes that explain all their wonky continuity?

Does this new trailer have you excited for season two of Discovery? Be sure to let us know down below in the comments.

Everything Coming to Netflix, Amazon, Hulu in May 2018

May is just around the corner, and there’s a new batch of films and TV shows heading to Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. Fans of The Matrix, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Rocky will be able to enjoy almost every movie in those respective series, as well as few notable streaming debuts from last year. Overall, though, it’s another quiet month for original streaming series and movies. Before we get to the complete lineup for May, here are some highlights coming your way.

Orphan Black

Attention Clone Club: the fifth and final season of BBC America’s Orphan Black is coming to Amazon Prime on May 12. The ten episodes wrap up the story of Sarah and her clone sisters Cosima, Helena, and Alison as they unravel the last mysteries of their creation and face their uncertain futures. Now that the show has come to a close, fans also have the opportunity to binge watch the entire 50 episode run.

Cargo

Sherlock star Martin Freeman is fighting zombies in Cargo, a Netflix original film set to drop on May 18. Freeman is playing Andy a man who finds himself stranded in Australia with his infant daughter, Rosie, during a zombie apocalypse, with few friends or allies to call his own. To make matters worse, Andy is infected as well, and he has only a short period of time to find a new home for Rosie before he turns.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

There’s a new season of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt slated to drop on Netflix on May 30, and we’re hoping that one of our favorite sitcoms manages to keep its momentum going. We don’t know much about what Kimmy, Titus, and the rest of the gang will be up to in the fourth season. However, it has been announced that Busy Philipps is coming to the show. But details about Philipps’ character and story haven’t been revealed yet.

I, Tonya

Margot Robbie‘s Oscar nominated turn as disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding is coming to Hulu on May 31, and it successfully makes its lead character into a sympathetic person. I, Tonya also boasts a strong supporting cast led by Allison Janney, who took home the Supporting Actress Oscar for her role as Hardy’s mother,  LaVona Golden. Beyond Robbie and Janney, the comedic standout is Paul Walter Hauser as  Shawn Eckhardt.

Please Stand By

Do you love Star Trek? If so, you may find a lot to like about Please Stand By, a film about a young woman whose Trek fandom is a vital way for her to deal with her Asperger’s syndrome. Dakota Fanning plays the leading character, Wendy, and the film follows her as she runs away from her caregiver to submit her Star Trek script to a writing competition. It wasn’t widely seen when it was released earlier this year, but Hulu will give it a second chance to find an audience on May 31.

For a more comprehensive guide, here are all of the movies and television shows hitting Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon in May.

Marvel Cinematic Universe Characters Then and Now

What a difference ten years can make. That’s how long it’s been since the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The cinematic landscape changed with Tony Stark sipping a cocktail in the back of a Humvee, and now, we’re on the precipice of Avengers: Infinity War. The upcoming film is going to include about 500 heroes, villains, and MCU characters, so the word epic applies here.

But before we watch Thanos try to break our heroes and our hearts, let’s take a walk down memory lane and look at Marvel movie characters then and now, in their first appearances and their most recent ones.

Iron Man – Iron Man (2008)/ Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

Happy Hogan – Iron Man (2008)/ Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

War Machine – Iron Man (2008)/ Captain America: Civil War (2016)

Pepper Potts – Iron Man (2008) / Infinity War (2018)

Phil Coulson – Iron Man (2008) / Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2018)

Nick Fury – Iron Man (2008) / Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)

Bruce Banner – The Incredible Hulk (2008) / Infinity War (2018)

Just kidding.

Bruce Banner – The Avengers (2012) / Infinity War (2018)

Hulk – The Incredible Hulk (2008) / Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

Black Widow – Iron Man 2 (2010) / Infinity War (2018)

Thor – Thor (2011) / Infinity War (2018)

Loki – Thor (2011) / Infinity War (2018)

Heimdall – Thor (2011) / Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

Hawkeye – Thor (2011) / Civil War (2016)

Tom Cruise Jumped Out of a Plane 106 Times for MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT

Tom Cruise might just be insane–in a good way–because his desire to constantly do his own crazy stunts in the Mission: Impossible franchise reached all new heights with Fallout. And then he reached it again. And again. And again. Because for one crazy scene, he jumped out of a plane 106 times.

The megastar joined Paramount’s panel at this year’s CinemaCon in Vegas where he talked about what sounds like the upcoming sixth Mission: Impossible movie’s signature stunt, one that could take its place in Hollywood lore alongside him hanging out of a plane in Rogue Nation. According to Deadline, Cruise said he wanted to be the one to skydive out of a plane traveling 220 mph over 80,000 feet in the air above the United Arab Emirates, the only place they could film it. And to get the three shots they wanted for the sequence (spoilers below) required 106 jumps, which included a cameraman filming Cruise with a camera on his head and “only a sense of instinct.” Some of it was ultimately shot in a wind tunnel, too, which makes us wonder how many jumps this would have required if they didn’t use one.

As for the actual sequence, SPOILER WARNING….

…it reportedly features Cruise grabbing hold of Henry Cavill’s character–in midair–followed by them both being hit by lighting before Cruise wakes up and resuscitates him. Okay that’s totally bonkers, especially since this isn’t even the stunt where he broke his leg on set.

Tom Cruise is clearly a crazy man. But fortunately he seems like the good kind.

Is this the most insane thing he’s done for the franchise? Is Mission: Impossible actually trying to kill him? Dive into our comments section below and let us know.
