LEGO’s Kessel Run Millennium Falcon Comes Loaded for Play (Toy Review)

Warning: It is possible that this toy contains minor spoilers for the movie Solo: A Star Wars Story!

Every kid has known since 1978 that the Millennium Falcon is the best Star Wars toy, largely because it doubles as a playset and an attack vehicle. So with a new Han Solo movie coming out, a new Falcon was a must. And here it is, in strange new colors and a slightly different shape. But just as the original Star Wars line shrunk action figures in order to increase play features with them, decreasing shelf space and higher prices are making it so you sometimes have to go down to LEGO size to get something resembling movie-accurate play scenes.

LEGO sent us the new Solo: A Star Wars Story Falcon for review, so let’s check it out! First, you may notice some new characters…

You probably already know Emilia Clarke’s Qi’ra; the droid is DD-BD, which sounds like something Buck Rogers‘ Twiki would say. He looks to be the body of an R5 astromech with “Gonk” Power Droid-ish legs. The hooded character is Quay Tolsite, who seems to be the same species as antagonist Moloch, though the instruction booklet shows him on the side of the good guys in a firefight against LEGO stormtroopers. Red guy is a Kessel Operations Droid, and as Threepio told us in A New Hope, spice mines are the most famous operations in those parts, which may explain why he looks red hot.

One of the things that distinguishes LEGO from all its competitors is that the designers have actual engineering skill; while the copycats focus all their energies on a cool exterior, LEGO sets usually have a strong framework in place first. See above for all the criss-crossing brick work you won’t see in the final model, because it’s well-concealed.

The individual bags numbered in order of need are also a plus. If you have to pause at any point, it means some pieces still remain bagged.

Like previous Falcons in this size, there are some cheats for scale to keep it more affordable than the $800 in-scale model; also like prior versions, it opens up with a series of triangular panels. Unlike those versions, the interior is divided into quadrants, though they do all connect through archways. You may notice the radar dish is on a double ball-joint for multiple positions.

First, there’s this bulkhead room. Not much in there; again, like with most Falcon toys, there isn’t a passage to the cockpit. (The eternal frustration!)

Then the hyperdrive/storage room, where containers hold a light, and…whatever that white thing Chewie is holding. Let us know in comments if you figure out what that is.

Lando’s quarters include his bunk (only single-wide here, because this set is family friendly) and a bar, because if you’re Lando, why not have your own space-bar?

Finally, there’s the main computer and Dejarik table room. The seats curve thanks to hinged connectors that are then held in place by studs between the joints.

To access the cockpit, you have to pull off the canopy. Inside, you’ll see two seats staggered slightly so Han and Chewie can sit side by side and not have to fight for arm space. Oh, and there’s a coffee maker behind them. Or a space beverage machine. They probably don’t call it coffee, but it sure looks like a Keurig from far, far away.

If you’re wondering why the front of the Falcon looks different, LEGO would seem to be confirming the rumor that there’s an escape pod upfront.

It fits a figure inside, with its double-hinge canopy.

Behind the pod, there’s a smuggling compartment that can hide a minifig or two.

And on either side, push-button missiles. They’re actually spring-loaded rather than ball/pop-socket, so be careful.

While the cannon on top rotates and swivels, you can also open it up and remove the gunner station, to fit figures inside at the proper firing positions. For play scenarios, this could also allow you to approximate the “Lando-vator” seen at the end of Empire.

You probably won’t ever look at the underneath; with non-retractable landing gear, this is only meant to be displayed one way. But if you do, there’s an articulated gun turret on the bottom too.

In another “pointless-but-cool” addition, the on-ramp does hinge open, but the Falcon isn’t high enough for a figure to actually board through it unless they lie down and squeeze.

You’re looking at around $170 for this Falcon, but compared to Hasbro’s, which is $99.99 and comes with just one figure and very little interior, that’s not bad (compared to the $800 LEGO Ultimate Collector Falcon, it’s a damn steal). Plus it packs a lot of play features in, with the gunner station, escape pod, missiles, and opening segments. It took me two days to build (by comparison, the Destiny’s Bounty boat from The LEGO Ninjago Movie took a week), and because the ship is asymmetrical, none of it every felt boring or repetitive and nothing about it was frustrating or tough to hold in place. You can build it in a day if you have the whole day pretty much free.

Homer Simpson is not included. But build a bar in anything, and he finds it!

We’d say this toy is no hunk of junk, and has got it where it counts. Will you be picking one up on your next Kessel toy run? Let us know in comments.

Dine Like Lando Calrissian with Fancy STAR WARS Plates

If you wanted to buy Star Wars homeware five years ago, your choices were limited mostly to coffee mugs or plastic cups. But my, how far we’ve come. To celebrate May the 4th and Solo: A Star Wars Story, ThinkGeek has released the Lando Calrissian Accents Collection, a.k.a. gold and white art deco dinnerware inspired by Lando’s swanky, luxurious taste. Hello, what have we here.

I have never purchased Star Wars merchandise so quickly in my entire life.

The dinnerware collection includes a bottle stopper, highball glasses (sold individually), a set of four salad plates, and a set of four dinner plates. The glasses come in two designs, one inspired by Han and one inspired by Lando. Please note it’s the Lando one that features a Millennium Falcon print, not the Han glass.

The plates are porcelain with gold art that subtly evokes the galaxy far, far away without being in your face. If you didn’t know they were influenced by Lando Calrissian, you wouldn’t know they were Star Wars. They’re elegant, classy–everything you’d picture Lando having on hand to serve important guests visiting his Cloud City establishment.

Ready to add some fine dining options to your cabinets? You can purchase the Lando collection from ThinkGeek.

What kind of meals do you think Lando serves on his fancy plates? Will you save these plates for special occasions? Tell us in the comments.

Will SOLO Have the Biggest STAR WARS Opening Weekend Ever?

For all of the issues surrounding the film Solo: A Star Wars Story is on pace to have the biggest opening weekend in the history of the galaxy far, far away. On today’s Nerdist News Talks Back we discussed our expectations for the movie, who could be tapped to direct a Black Widow film, and which character we hope to see on the big screen in He-Man.

Jessica Chobot was back in her host’s chair today, and she was joined by producers Ben McShane and Kate Meyers and editor Kyle Anderson. They began with the latest from Solo, which somehow is only three weeks away, and in a new commercial for the movie we finally heard from Jon Favreau’s character Rio Durant. What do we make of his space monkey? Are we digging the whole Western vibe the film is leaning into? And with Deadline reporting it’s on pace for a Star Wars record-breaking opening weekend do we think it will also have staying power at the box office?

Speaking of money-printing Disney franchises, Marvel has reportedly met with over 65 directors for a potential Black Widow film. Who would we like to see in charge? Has the time for this movie passed already? And if they are making it, what story arc from the comics would we like to see them adapt?

Finally, the mavens of casting news at The Hashtag Show have a long and exciting list of which characters could end up in the He-Man movie. Which ones are we hoping to see? Who isn’t on the list that should be? And what’s our favorite moment from the show (or toys)?

Nerdist News Talks Back airs live at 1PM PT Monday through Thursday on our YouTube and Alpha channels, and tomorrow we end the week with our hour-long entertainment recap Nerdist News What the Fridays at 1PM PT, exclusively at Alpha. Make sure you tune in with us so you can talk more Solo with us before it comes to theaters, which somehow is basically tomorrow.

We still want to hear your thoughts on today’s show, so talk back to us in the comments below.

First Ever VR Google Doodle Celebrates the Magic of Georges Méliès

Movies are artifical; their only aim is to fool you into believing in a reality that doesn’t really exist. That’s where the term “movie magic” comes from, because it’s a sleight of hand that, if done properly, can wow audiences just like a good illusionist. This has been the case since the very beginning of cinema, perhaps because one of the earliest true artists of cinema was the French illusionist, Georges Méliès. In the very earliest days of motion picture technology, Méliès made more movies than anyone since, about 520 films between 1896 and 1912. To celebrate the great showman of movies, Google has unveiled its very first 360-degree VR Google Doodle.

The beautiful, colorful animated short gives you a good taste of some of Méliès’ very finest films and camera tricks. He would almost always appear in the movies himself, and many would simply be showcases for his own brand of magic. He’d very often superimpose different pieces of film so he could appear in shots with himself. One of the most famous examples is his 1898 short Un homme de têtes, or “The Four Troublesome Heads.”

“In addition to being a magician, Méliès was an expert storyteller, so it was important for the Doodle to have a clear story. We approached it as if it were a ballet or play you watch at the theatre, where you get to choose where to look. In these situations, the spectator becomes the camera, editing their own film,” said Hélène Leroux, project art lead of the Doodle.

Some of Méliès’ most famous work had to do with outer space, which the Doodle’s title, “Back to the Moon” references. In the late Victorian period, science fiction was obsessed with going to the moon, but nobody quite knew how to do that. That didn’t stop Méliès from building giant puppets and scenery to give us a glimpse of what it might look like, or at least via the lens of imagination.

Perhaps his most famous work is the 1902 science fiction epic A Trip to the Moon which gave a lot of people the hope of one day going there. Also, they thought shooting you like a bullet was the only way it would work which we now know to be false. Also, the moon doesn’t have a face.

Since his films are so old–the oldest are 122 years old at this point–most of the existing ones can be found on YouTube and other places. It’s a shame so many of them have been lost to time, but thank the heavens above we have the ones we do. Hell, Martin Scorsese thought so much of him, he made a whole movie about it. (It was called Hugo. Good movie. Check it out.)

Three Ways AVENGERS 4 Could Wrap Up INFINITY WAR

Warning: This post contains massive spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War !

Avengers: Infinity War dropped quite a few bombshells on Marvel fans, and even Tom Holland couldn’t possibly spoil them all. Thanos may demand your silence, but we have it on good authority the Mad Titan won’t be showing his face in the MCU until Avengers 4 hits in May 2019. So, it’s going to be a long year as we wait for the resolution to Infinity War‘s cliffhanger. On today’s Nerdist News, we offer three theories about how Avengers 4 will wrap up the storyline.

Join Thanos’ new favorite host, Jessica Chobot, as she enlightens us with the path Marvel may take now that half the universe is dead. Thanos won, bro. If there’s a god in the sky, it’s him. Obviously, the remaining heroes are going to bring “god” down. But can the people he turned to dust be restored? Our first theory is no, they can’t. As they used to say at Marvel Comics, “dead means dead.” In the darkest of all possible timelines, we already addressed how the show could go on.

Vanity Fair‘s Joanna Robinson had a theory about Ant-Man and the Wasps Quantum Realm adventure and how it may also play into the next Avengers. According to that one, the characters will return to find the events of Infinity War have already taken place. Perhaps they were spared from Thanos’ touch by being out of his reach. But here’s the part that will keep you wondering: Robinson suggests that the erased heroes and people have literally been pulled from existence. As in they never lived at all, and it’s up to Ant-Man and the Wasp to keep those memories alive long enough for them to be restored.

Finally, there’s the always handy time travel solution. We’ve seen some hints for this in the behind-the-scenes pictures from Avengers 4, which show several cast members in their costumes from the original film. That said, there’s also a possibility that the next film will feature a sizable time jump to show how the universe is adjusting to the big changes. What if it’s not enough to stop Thanos? Maybe Thanos needs to see just how wrong he was about his ambitions before Captain Marvel arrives to help rally the heroes against him.

How do you think Avengers 4 will play out? Share your theories below!

DC Comics’ Hanna-Barbera Crossover Variant Covers Take Us Back to the ’70s (Exclusive)

Last year, DC Comics took their greatest heroes and paired them with characters from the rich history of animated Hanna-Barbera Saturday morning cartoons from the ’60s, for a series of wild adventures across space and time. And recently, the publisher announced plans to release four new one-shot comics bringing some of DC’s most exciting heroes together with well-known characters from the world of Hanna-Barbera cartoons, this time from the groovy 1970s.

All four of these books will be available at comic book retailers and digitally on May 30; each one-shot will be 48 pages long and cost $4.99. We have an exclusive look at the variant covers for these special issues, and you can view them below along with each book’s synopsis.

AQUAMAN/JABBERJAW SPECIAL #1

Variant cover by Joshua Middleton

In a story by Aquaman writer Dan Abnett with art by Paul Pelletier and Andrew Hennessey, the town of Amnesty Island is besieged by a series of shark attacks, and the authorities call Aquaman for help. What’s unusual about this case is the shark isn’t trying to kill people—he just wants to talk to them. All Jabberjaw wants is to get back to Aqualand. But that peaceful city where man and sentient sea life have been living in harmony has been turned into a dystopian nightmare created by a new Ocean Master! Now the King of Atlantis and his friendly shark ally must join forces to set things right. This one-shot also includes a bonus short story by Jeff Parker and Scott Kolins that tells the tale of the first-ever meeting between Captain Caveman, the Spectre, and the wizard Shazam.

BLACK LIGHTNING/HONG KONG PHOOEY SPECIAL #1

Variant cover by Chris Cross

Back from Vietnam, kung-fu master Hong Kong Phooey has set up his own detective agency in the inner city. Meanwhile, Jefferson Pierce (a.k.a. Black Lightning) has uncovered a plot by three assassins to collect the components of a sacred text revealing the darkest secrets of martial arts magic, and they’ll kill anyone who owns them—including the dog who holds the last chapter of the book, Hong Kong Phooey. Michael Cray’s Bryan Hill, Denys Cowan, and Bill Sienkiewicz are delivering a story with all the power of a roundhouse kick to the chops. Plus, Parker and Kolins are back with a bonus story featuring a pre-Demon Jason Blood and Hanna-Barbera’s own “Spirit of ’76,” the Funky Phantom.

THE FLASH/SPEED BUGGY SPECIAL #1

Variant cover by Ivan Reis

Red Hood and the Outlaws scribe Scott Lobdell, along with Brett Booth and Norm Rapmund, is gearing up to deliver a rubber-burning story that pushes all the way into the redline. When Wally West tries to take down the villain Kilg%re, he’s surprised to find he has an unknown ally who can move just as fast as he can. Dr. Pernell, a brilliant S.T.A.R. Labs scientist, has found a way to power his dune buggy using the Speed Force. When the Flash agrees to help test the limits of the vehicle in a race, something unexpected sends them spiraling out of the Speed Force and into the unknown. They land in a post-apocalyptic future, but Dr. Pernell is missing, leaving a now-sentient Speed Buggy to help the Fastest Man Alive repair the time stream and stop the triple threat of Savitar, Speed Demon Buggy, and… Reverse Speed Buggy?

SUPER SONS/DYNOMUTT SPECIAL #1

Variant cover by Doug Mahnke

It’s no fun for Jon Kent to be visiting Big City with his parents for the funeral of an old friend, so his best pal Damian Wayne decides to follow along and give him the inside scoop on the city. But when they go to meet Robin’s local friend, Dynomutt, they find him injured and in need of help. And Dynomutt’s human superhero companion, Blue Falcon, has seemingly turned evil. What’s the reason for this betrayal between once-loyal companions, and what role might the evil Red Vulture play in this scenario? Fan-favorite Super Sons writer Peter J. Tomasi and artists Fernando Pasarin and Oclair Albert tell this story about the first encounter of the Dog Wonder with the sons of the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight.

Are you excited to flashback to Saturday morning in the ’70s with each of these specials? Be sure to let us know in the comments.

Funko Adds Iron Spider and More AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Toys

Warning: Avengers: Infinity War spoilers follow.

Much like Thanos‘ singular drive to get all of the Infinity Stones to complete his little pet project, we know there are many of you who will not feel complete until you own the entire line of Avengers: Infinity War toys from Funko. Well, just when you thought your collection might be done, the venerable toy company has announced several new additions to their existing Infinity War releases via their official blog.

Warning: a few of these figures can be considered spoilers for the movie, so if you haven’t seen it yet, you best get on that before you check out the pictures.

First off, there’s a new two-pack in the Vynl line, which features the Mad Titan Thanos himself, complete with a fully stoned Infinity Gauntlet, together with the kid who threw webbing in his face, Peter Parker, in his Tony Stark created Iron Spider armor. For the classic Pop! vinyls line, we have a bearded and rugged Captain America in a new pose (a Walmart exclusive), the Iron Spider (a Target exclusive), and the “Stonekeeper,” who we of course know better as Cap’s World War II menace Red Skull, who is a Funko shop exclusive. And the Hulk busting out of his Hulkbuster armor figure is available only at GameStop; it’s a six inch super sized figure. Hey wait…that never happened in the movie!

You can check out images of all the new Avengers: Infinity War Funko products in our gallery below. Each of these new toys should be hitting shelves sometime early this summer.

Which of these toys from the Infinity War line is your must have item? Be sure to let us know in the comments.

Tom Holland Spoiled INFINITY WAR for an Entire Theater

Warning: spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War follow. Stop reading if you haven’t seen the movie yet.

Tom Holland: Peter Parker, Spider-Man, terrible secret-keeper. Holland has a reputation for letting Marvel Cinematic Universe spoilers slip–so much so that Marvel paired him with Benedict Cumberbatch during Avengers: Infinity War press so Cumberbatch could stop Holland from spilling the goods. Unfortunately, Cumberbatch couldn’t keep Holland from revealing a spoiler in front of a theater audience that hadn’t seen the movie yet.

Oh, Tom. Sweet baby Tom.

The crowd at Arclight Theater on April 28 was probably excited when stars from Infinity War surprised them and introduced the film. Cumberbatch and Holland were joined by Kevin Feige and the Russo brothers. But a confused Holland thought the crowd had already seen the movie. He stepped in front of the crowd and said, “I’m alive!” He’s of course referring to the fact that Spider-Man died in the movie (by the way, Holland improvised that heartbreaking scene).

AND, oh the the people you run into on stage announcing #avengers #infinitywar w #benedictcumberbatch #tomholland #kevinfeige #russobrothers
(ps: poor Tom Holland thought we all just saw the movie & gave a spoiler. He was mortified. Adorable. Don’t worry, video is spoiler free) pic.twitter.com/OCOGUwGufD

— Jennifer Muro (@jennifermuro) April 28, 2018

The above video from Jennifer Muro shows the moments after Holland shared the spoiler. He said, “Wait, have you guys seen it, or are you about to see it?” Insert facepalm here.

Megan Amram was in the crowd too:

This is not a spoiler but a highlight of my LA life so far was last night when @TomHolland1996 accidentally revealed an #InfinityWar spoiler to an entire arclight theater who hadn't seen it yet

— Megan Amram (@meganamram) April 28, 2018

Would you ever trust Holland with a secret? What do you think it would take to get him to keep a secret? Tell us in the comments.

Why The MCU Needs to Embrace Its Magical Side

After seeing Avengers: Infinity War, one thing is clear: the secret ingredient the MCU needs to use for its continued long-term success is magic. For a while, it seemed as though there wouldn’t be any magic in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Even the mythic realm of Asgard with their Norse gods, dark elves, giants, and otherworldly weaponry could be conveniently explained away.

“Your ancestors called it magic but you call it science,” Thor told Jane Foster in his eponymous 2011 film. “I come from a land where they are one and the same.”

But that’s a load of Giant-Man-sized B.S..

Editor’s note: this post and video contain spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War

Magic is pervasive in the MCU, even if we don’t want to admit it. And now, with the ability to bend the laws of space, time, and reality itself, the Infinity Stones have shown us that not everything can be explained as science we don’t understand yet. There are immense cosmic powers at work, pulling in energies from other dimensions, and planes of existence. There’s an entire, orange-hued world where the souls are trapped inside of a pocket dimension, for crying out loud. Not even Kyle Hill can explain all of that. And believe me–he has tried.

While most of Doctor Strange’s character development apparently happened between his own movie and Infinity War, the Sorcerer Supreme was easily the MVP of the epic superhero slugfest. With a vast array of new spells at his disposal, Strange was perhaps the only hero to truly give Thanos and his lieutenants a run for their money.

While Tony Stark and Peter Quill had an ego-measuring contest, the Master of the Mystic Arts was busy using his magical powers to forecast 14 million possible outcomes and execute the only plan that could lead to a potential victory. His prophetic words and sacrifice of the Time Stone are part of a much larger plan that will only become clear when we finally see whatever the heck Avengers 4 is going to be called. Plus Strange’s Images of Ikonn spell in which he sprouted a bunch of arms then created a ton of shadow clones of himself is inarguably the coolest shot in the entire movie.

But it’s not just about looking cool. It’s about the narrative possibilities that magic opens to the MCU. We’ve seen the politics of Earth, we’ve gone on cosmic adventures, and we’ve borne witness to the jaw-dropping majesty of Wakanda. But Marvel has only scratched the surface of its mystical realm through Doctor Strange’s origin movie, Wakanda’s spiritual Djalia plane, and Scarlet Witch’s incredibly powerful hex magic–which was the only thing in the Avengers’ arsenal powerful enough to shatter the Mind Stone.

By embracing the weird, occult, magical side of Marvel Comics, the architects of the MCU can create genuine stakes for characters like Captain America and Iron Man who would be well and truly overpowered in nearly any other arena. Magic allows Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to go toe to toe with gods and demons, traversing between planes of existence, and facing powers that lesser minds cannot comprehend. After all, we can only take so many stories about superheroes fighting anonymous gray aliens or paint-by-numbers goons before we start to want something more.

But what do you think? Is magic the MCU’s secret weapon heading into Phase IV? Or should Marvel leave the spell-slinging to Harry Potter?

Funko’s BAO Figure Looks Good Enough to Eat

Funko makes toys for everything, but no, really, everything. They’re even turning to Pixar shorts with an upcoming release from Bao, the short airing before Incredibles 2. The precious vinyl figure depicting the dumpling star of the short (which, by the way, is the first Pixar short to be directed by woman, Domee Shii) looks delicious enough to eat. The story’s a folktale, in which a dumpling comes to life and soothes the sadness of a woman suffering from empty nest syndrome. This figure depicts the little guy right after he’s “born.” It’s sweet and though I know the toy isn’t huggable, I really want to squish him.

The toy is adorable, but the packaging takes it to the next level. If you’ve ever had bao, you know the design is reminiscent of the bamboo baskets dumplings are typically served in. If you don’t feel like taking this collectible out of the package, it will look lovely on your shelf–or displayed on your kitchen counter.

The Bao vinyl figure will be available “later this year” as a Funko shop exclusive.

Will you be thinking of this sweet little face the next time you eat dumplings? Because I will. And it’s not going to stop me from shoving them into my face.
