The Pull List: BLACKWOOD, BLACK PANTHER, ASTRO CITY, and More

Greetings, comic fans! It’s Wednesday, also known as “The Best Day of the Week,” because it’s new comic book day. There’s a ton of stuff out this week, but don’t worry—we have a few recommendations to help you sort through the chaos. And for you big spenders out there, we also have a complete list of this week’s releases.

BLACKWOOD #2

Blackwood #2 from Dark Horse Comics

Written By: Evan Dorkin

Art By: Veronica Fish

Colors By: Veronica Fish

Letters By: Andy Fish

Part of of Blackwood‘s charm is that it throws everything at you and you never really know what to take seriously. The second issue of Blackwood moves very, very fast, laying out its twisted mysteries in a decidedly matter-of-fact manner. There are horror and monsters, sure, but there’s also a two-headed monkey zombie thing. It strange, devilish, and an absolute blast. Evan Dorkin’s world-building is top-notch and Veronica Fish is a goddamn national treasure. Don’t sleep on this series, folks; you’ll regret it. It’s too weird to be ignored. Just embrace it.

BLACK PANTHER #2

Black Panther #2 from Marvel Comics

Written By: Ta-Nehisi Coates

Art By: Daniel Acuna

Colors By: Daniel Acuna

Letters By: VC’s Joe Sabino

This issue is essentially one big spaceship chase and battle, which is all kinds of awesome. Daniel Acuna brings a tremendous sense of speed and movement to the panels. It can be a little confusing at times since everyone is dressed like a Black Panther and all the aliens kinda look the same, but that only adds to the frantic flow. Really, the best thing about this series is that we have no idea where it is going. Ta-Nehisi Coates and Daniel Acuna have us on the edge of our seats and we love it. Black Panther in space is something we needed but never knew we wanted.

SHADOW ROADS #1

Shadow Roads #1 from ONI Press

Written By: Cullen Bunn and Brain Hurtt

Art By: A.C. Zamudio

Colors By: Carlos N. Zamudio

Letters By: Crank!

When Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt team up, you better pay attention. The fact that these guys are revisiting the weird Western world of The Sixth Gun means this is essential reading. Shadow Roads #1 is a damn fine comic book that captures everything we loved about The Sixth Gun but still manages to stand on its own as something altogether new. A.C. Zamudio’s art is fantastic and the coloring by Carlos N. Zamudio is gorgeous (those landscapes are all kinds of wow). Shadow Roads #1 is a knockout and perfect way to revisit a world we have deep affection for. Also, read The Sixth Gun, guys.

KILL OR BE KILLED #20

Kill or Be Killed #20 from Image Comics

Written By: Ed Brubaker

Art By: Sean Phillips

Colors By: Elizabeth Breitweiser

Letters By: Sean Phillips

The final issue of Kill or Be Killed promised to answer questions… and it sort of does. If you are expecting a hard, detailed exploration of the demon and whether or not it actually exists, you’ll be disappointed. One of the things that made this series work so well was the unreliable narrator. Dylan was often as lost and confused as we were, but he was also always one step ahead. This issue really plays off of that, subverting our expectations and leading us down certain paths only to jerk us in another direction at the last moment. It’s brilliant stuff, really, and another showcase for the collaboration of Ed Brubaker, Sean Phillips, and Elizabeth Breitweiser. We’ll miss Kill or Be Killed, but we’re very excited to see what this creative team does next. Everything they produce is freaking gold.

ASTRO CITY #52

Astro City #52 from Vertigo Comics

Written By: Kurt Busiek

Art By: Brent Anderson

Colors By: Pete Pantazis

Letters By: Comicraft

This the end of Astro City as we know it. Kurt Busiek and Brent Anderson will visit this world again, no doubt, but the single issue, monthly format is done (or so they say). Astro City has had its ups and downs over the years, but this recent run at Vertigo has been fantastic. When it’s on point, Astro City is the most engaging superhero comic around. Hell, even calling it a “superhero comic” feels wrong, because it’s so much more than that. Busiek is one of the best comic writers of all time, and Astro City is one of his greatest works. Anderson is a masterful storyteller and he brings his A-game to every single page of this comic. To put it simply, this series is one of the best works to come out of the modern age of comics. You owe it to yourself to read it.

MODERN FANTASY #1

Modern Fantasy #1 from Dark Horse Comics

Written By: Rafer Roberts

Art By: Kristen Gudsnuk

Colors By: Kristen Gudsnuk

Letters By: Kristen Gudsnuk

Modern Fantasy is a D&D campaign merged with The Office mixed with a dash of Saga. It hilarious, snarky, and completely unexpected. Sage works in a cubical in an office populated with elves, monsters, and wizards, but dreams of something more: a grand adventure involving battles, treasure, and magic. Unfortunately, she’s got all this paperwork to get through and the most exciting thing that happens each day is listening to her coworkers talk about the latest episode of Keeping Up with the Kobolds. As you probably guessed, an adventure ends up finding her and the stuff hits the fan rather quickly. Rafer Roberts and Kristen Gudsnuk have produced one of the funniest and most charming debut issues we’ve read in ages.

That’s it for us this week! Let us know what comics you are picking up in the comments below!

TOO MANY COOKS Creator Returns With Mindbending Twitch Streamer Parody

Back in 2014, Adult Swim’s Too Many Cooks short brought viewers into a bizarre, seemingly never-ending series of opening credit sequences for the most over-populated sitcom ever conceived. Too Many Cooks was an instant cult classic, and now writer and director Casper Kelly has delivered a worthy follow up project: Final Deployment 4: Queen Battle Walkthrough. Essentially, it’s a parody of every twitch video game live stream walkthrough you’ve ever seen, with some very sublime and surreal humor throughout. Fair warning, this video has several NSFW moments.

At 20 minutes, Final Deployment 4 is about twice the length of Too Many Cooks, and it jumps into several different genres over the course of the video. It starts with a video game streamer calling himself “Blair Trigger,” who posts a Final Deployment 4 walkthrough that goes from the glory of the final battle to a soldier’s depressing attempts to battle PTSD once he’s forced to return home from war. Imagine if the Gears of War games forced you to play through the peace years while Marcus Fenix slowly suffered a mental breakdown. The fake game pushes things even further by forcing players to experience life’s most soul crushing moments in real time.

Without giving too much away from the short’s narrative, Final Deployment 4 takes several twists and turns as it forces the viewer to question where the game begins and reality ends. Each major character is controlling someone else’s destiny, but none of them can escape their circular fate. It’s dark comedy at its finest, and another one of our new favorite shorts.

What did you think about Final Deployment 4: Queen Battle Walkthrough? Let us know in the comment section below!

Wario Is Actually The Best MARIO KART Character, According To Thorough Research

There are a lot of different thought processes people go through when choosing their Mario Kart racer. Maybe they want somebody like Baby Mario because he’s cute, or Mario or Luigi because they’re flagship Nintendo characters. Perhaps they opt for a more obscure pick like Dry Bones to get their hipster factor up, or Bowser because he looks tough. My personal pick has always been Donkey Kong, because it just felt to me like he was the best and most well-rounded character to use, in terms of his attributes.

It turns out that I was partially right: Henry Hinnefeld did some research, and the math shows that while DK is one of the best Mario Kart characters, Wario is actually the one that you should pick (via Digg).

First, some context: In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the latest version of the game, there are 149,760 possible combinations of character, kart, and tire (a group that features 294 unique statistical combinations), the three variables you can select when picking a racer (aside from parachute, which I have to assume is insignificant in terms of its contribution to attributes because it was left out of this thorough, thorough research). If you are trying to create the best combination of these variables to give you the greatest speed or acceleration, the attributes that are best for racing, there are only 15 worthwhile combinations.

Of these 15 combinations, eight of them feature Wario, three feature Donkey Kong, and the others feature Baby Mario, Toad, Peach, and Mario. There is a ton of math behind this analysis, so check out the original article for a more thorough explanation of it.

What do you think of this data? Is it enough to change your Mario Kart go-to? Race down to the comments and let us know!

Jeremy Irons Joins the Cast of HBO’s WATCHMEN

The cast of Damon Lindelof‘s pilot for the Watchmen series at HBO keeps growing, and it just added another A-list actor–one who already has some experience with DC Comics based properties. According to Deadline, Oscar winner Jeremy Irons has been tapped for a lead role in the pilot episode of Lindelof’s reinvention (or is it a sequel?) to Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ seminal comic book seriesIrons joins previously cast Regina King, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Adelaide Clemens, and Andrew Howard. Of course, the DC role Irons is most famous for is his recent stint as Alfred Pennyworth in Batman v Superman and Justice League.

Right now, the only details of Jeremy Irons’ character we have are that he is playing “an aging and imperious lord of a British manor.” This doesn’t line up with any Watchmen characters from the original comic book series, but it seems the majority of the characters in this new television version will be all new. The show is rumored to take place in the present day, a present day in which the history of Watchmen (which takes place in 1985) is some thirty years in the past. So it is unlikely that Irons is playing an older and wiser Ozymandias, which would be perfect. Or could he…? It’s just pure speculation, but Ozy did survive the events of the comic series.

The pilot for Watchmen does not have a guaranteed series order, but most insiders think its prospects for going full series are good. It will be interesting to see if this Watchmen sequel contradicts what DC Comics is doing with Doomsday Clock, the Geoff Johns and Gary Frank series that is itself a “many years later” Watchmen sequel. Could the two line up in some way?

Are you excited about acting royalty like Jeremy Irons joining Watchmen? Be sure to let us know in the comments.

Could J.J. Abrams Retcon Rey’s Origin with Obi-Wan?

One of the major revelations of Star Wars: The Last Jedi was that Rey, the leading heroine of the new trilogy, had truly come from nothing. She’s not a Skywalker, a Solo, a Kenobi, or even a Palpatine. Not everyone was happy about that creative decision, but it’s something that could potentially be revisited in Star Wars: Episode IX. Director J.J. Abrams is set to begin production on Episode IX in just a few weeks, and he may be joined by a familiar face: Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi. Today’s Nerdist News examines how Obi-Wan’s return could change everything we thought we knew about Rey.

Join host and future Force ghost, Jessica Chobot, as she goes over a report from The Sun that McGregor is set to return to the Star Wars franchise. Normally, we don’t put a lot of stock in the British tabloids, but there are a few reasons to believe this could happen. First, McGregor has already returned for a quick vocal cameo in The Force Awakens during Rey’s Force vision. Of course, there’s also a rumored Obi-Wan Kenobi film in development, an idea which McGregor has repeatedly expressed interest in.

It’s possible for McGregor to spend a few minutes on screen as a Force ghost. If Anakin Skywalker gets to choose to be his younger self in the Force afterlife, then surely Obi-Wan would do it too. Alternatively, McGregor’s iconic character could appear as part of a Jedi Holocron message for Rey to discover.

As far as we know, Obi-Wan never had any children of his own while he was living on Tatooine and watching over Luke Skywalker. Then again, we haven’t seen the vast majority of his life on that planet. If Abrams were to retcon Rey as a lost Kenobi, it’s not without precedent. George Lucas didn’t settle on Leia as Luke’s sister until Return of the Jedi, when Obi-Wan delivered his infamous line: “from a certain point of view.” If anyone should hand down a complete reinvention of Rey’s history, it should definitely be Obi-Wan.

Do you think Rey’s parentage should be revisited in Episode IX? And do you still want an Obi-Wan Kenobi solo film? Let us know in the comment section below!

Tom Baker’s First DOCTOR WHO Season Is Nothing Short of Glorious

Jodie Whittaker’s first season of Doctor Who won’t begin airing until October, but she’s already in august company. Every single actor who’s played the Doctor up to now has made an indelible stamp on the role right from the very beginning, and the odds have it that Whittaker will come out the gate with amazing stuff. There’s precedent for this; Matt Smith’s first season is by far his best, same with Jon Pertwee. And you can’t get too much better than Tom Baker’s inaugural season, which has been newly restored and released as a Blu-ray box set.

This set—touted as “Tom Baker Season One”—not only gathers all 20 episodes comprising five stories of Doctor Who season 12, which aired from December 1974 to May 1976, but fills the discs with over 17 hours of bonus material. It’s a staggering amount of extras, but as I’ll discuss in a moment, all incredibly worthy.

First a few quick notes about classic Doctor Who on DVD. Because of the way the show was serialized in the classic series, the DVD releases were all individual stories, consisting of between two and 10 episodes a pop. Only twice has a full season been bundled into a single release—season 16 and season 23—and both of those were because they contained a much more pronounced season-long quest arc within the different serials.

The other thing to note is that just about every episode of Doctor Who in the old days featured some form of videotape recording (usually for the show’s multi-camera interiors), and as such, there’s limited restoration that can be done for the HD format beyond what’s already been done by the amazing Doctor Who Restoration Team prior to the initial DVD releases. However, the Blu-ray for Tom Baker’s first season does look better than the DVDs, and they have a ton more space per disc for all the extras.

Tom Baker’s inaugural season was transitional on just about all fronts. Producer Barry Letts and script editor Terrance Dicks, who’d been the creative force behind all five Jon Pertwee years, were stepping down and a new young producer named Philip Hinchcliffe was taking over for Letts while longtime Who writer Robert Holmes took over for Dicks. The series would move away from the Earthbound UNIT years-style of storytelling and return to the Doctor traveling time and space. In order to ease the transition, Letts—whom Hinchcliffe shadowed for the first few weeks—commissioned stories written by established series writers and featuring returning fan-favorite monsters as much as possible.

The initial story, “Robot,” remained a UNIT story, the last to utilize the Pertwee years sets, and allowed Tom Baker to put a stamp on the character in an arena fans had only ever seen his predecessor occupy. And how different he was! Sillier, more irreverent, yet still quite imposing and altogether alien. This was followed by “The Ark in Space,” a story that is still considered one of the Fourth Doctor’s best, set on a near-deserted space station, with an alien running amok. The slight but enjoyable “The Sontaran Experiment” followed, giving the season some more location filming, and then we have the all-time classic “Genesis of the Daleks,” which introduces the Daleks’ creator Davros and is one of the bleakest allegories for Nazism ever in sci-fi. Rounding out the season is the goofy but harmless “Revenge of the Cybermen,” in which the Cybermen seek revenge…for something.

What makes the season so memorable and endlessly watchable is not necessarily the individual stories, but the interplay between Baker and his two companions. Sarah Jane Smith, played by Elisabeth Sladen, was still fresh off her first year on the show and continued to bring an energy and a savviness the role of companion dearly needed. She sparked well with the Doctor as well as the one-season companion of UNIT medical officer Dr. Harry Sullivan, played by Ian Marter, a character initially written in to be the one to do the action bits if they’d hired an older actor as the Doctor. Harry’s old fashioned mentality clashes with Sarah Jane’s modern career woman without being abrasive; if anything, Harry comes off as quaint.

I could talk for hours about the stories, but that’s only a percentage of what the Blu-rays have to offer. In addition to all of the extras that originally came with the individual stories, the BBC have commissioned literal hours of new content, including a full hour-long interview with Baker conducted by writer, TV presenter, and huge Doctor Who fan Matthew Sweet. It’s a career-spanning discussion of not just Baker’s first season but all of his time on the show and beyond, and the 84-year-old actor is his trademark mixture of self-effacing and batty, and gets quite candid and revealing.

The next new feature that I think is just about the best thing ever to grace a Doctor Who release. On each and every story there’s a feature called “Behind the Sofa,” referring to the common parlance of British people saying something was so scary they hid behind the sofa. This features an edit package (17 minutes for “Sontaran” and up to 45 minutes for “Robot”) in which two sets of people watch the stories and comment on them. The first set is Tom Baker, producer Philip Hinchcliffe, and Sadie Miller, daughter of Elisabeth Sladen. When it cuts to this crew, you get a lot of background information, reminiscences, and some irreverence, especially seeing the 33-year-old Miller at times humoring these two very old men.

The second half of each of these features has three actresses who played companions for Tom Baker later in his run, who have never seen these season 12 stories before. Louise Jameson played Leela, the companion immediately following Sladen’s exit, and she’s joined by Janet Fielding and Sarah Sutton, who played Tegan and Nyssa, respectively, during the final Baker stories before becoming companions of Fifth Doctor Peter Davison. They take turns slagging off bad special effects, trying to remember things from their own eras, and just generally talking to the screen as if nobody’s watching. It is an utter delight.

In addition, each story also has a making-of featurette (“Sontaran” and “Cybermen” each got a newly commissioned one), and there’s also the whole four hours of “The Tom Baker Years,” a VHS release from 1991 in which Tom Baker himself watches and comments on clips from his seven years on the series. 5.1 sound mixes grace “The Ark in Space” and “Genesis of the Daleks,” and you can watch new special effects for “Revenge of the Cybermen.” There’s also the rarely seen “Genesis of the Daleks” omnibus movie version that was recently screened in cinemas.

I’ve long said I’m not the world’s biggest Fourth Doctor fan, but you can’t help but be enthralled and delighted by each and every minute of the “Tom Baker: Season One” Blu-ray set. If this is the primer for future such classic Doctor Who releases—perhaps they’ll do more Tom Baker seasons or full seasons for other Doctors—then I don’t think any fan will be let down. This is the best of the best.

POKÉMON: LET’S GO PIKACHU Makes Catching ‘Em All Easier Than Ever

You want to be the very best, like no one ever was. The problem is, filling out that Pokédex can be tedious. You can walk through tall grass for days with no idea of what you’ll find ahead and a trail of Caterpies in your wake. And when you do find the one you want, you have to wear it down, draining its HP juuuuuuuust enough without going overboard and knocking it out. It’s enough to make you want to throw down a Max Repel and forgot about collecting altogether.

Okay, so no one’s ever made the argument that Pokémon RPGs are too hard, but they can be full of repetition and grinding. In upcoming Nintendo Switch titles Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!, your Pokémon trainer can cut right to the chase, going immediately into capture mode upon finding one in the wild. What’s more, you can actually see the creatures lying in wait, making it easier to avoid ten Rattata battles in a row.

This simplified capture method is directly inspired by Nintendo’s successful mobile title Pokémon Go, and works similarly—only instead of swiping your phone, you’ll tip the Joy-Con controller at the screen. Alternately, you can use the PokéBall Plus, a neat little contraption that looks like a PokéBall but somehow functions as a controller. It felt good to hold that little ball in my hand, and I was shocked to find out its functionality went beyond just emulating the action of tossing a ball to catch a Pokémon. The PokéBall Plus can be used for the entire game, whether you’re exploring, battling, or racking up new Pokédex entries.

Fighting wild Pokémon may have been eliminated, but that doesn’t mean Let’s Go is combat-free. You’ll still encounter trainers in the wild, and you know the rules: if you make eye contact, you must pit your Pokémon against each other until only one side is left standing. What’s not known, however, is whether the Switch game will have gym battles and leaders like the core RPGs, and that’s something Nintendo’s not sharing just yet.

Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu!/Eevee! has a lot of the traits for which the series is known: it’s cute as heck, it’s easy to get into, and there are lots of wild creatures to collect. Without knowing much about its scope beyond exploring and minor fighting, though, it feels more like a beefed-up version of the mobile game than a new Pokémon RPG. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, you can even transfer Pokémon from the app to the Switch, though you can’t use them in battle. For those who found Pokémon Go to be a gateway drug to the long-running franchise, Let’s Go is a natural next step. For longtime fans, the return of the Kanto region and the original 151 Pokémon is a huge draw. It appears that the first console Pokémon game of the generation has something for everyone; I just hope it doesn’t lose too much of its challenge in the process.

Pokémon: Let’s Go Pikachu and Let’s Go Eevee, along with the PokéBall Plus, will be out on November 16.

Build a DRAGON BALL Vegito and STAR WARS B-Wing with Bandai SDCC Exclusives

What’s cooler than having an action figure you can place in almost any pose imaginable, thanks to hidden articulation that mimics actual human posability as closely as hard plastic can? Looking at that sucker and being able to say, “I built that.” There’s quite the sense of achievement that comes with putting the final touches on a Bandai buildable figure, especially once you apply the incredibly tiny, no-minor-detail ignored stickers that tend to be the finishing touch.

Debuting the product at San Diego Comic-Con at the Bluefin booth (earlier even than Japan), the U.S. distributors of Bandai model kits are going to have a very special Vegito (or Vegetto), the incredibly fusion between Dragon Ball heroes Goku and Vegeta via the Potara earrings, sacred artifacts of the Supreme Ka. Boasting supposedly the greatest articulation of any Figure-rise standard kit so far, this Vegito also includes an energy blast so long (17.7 inches) that it requires its own stand, as well as a forced-perspective tiny Majin Buu figure impaled on it. (The black stand in the picture is sold separately.) He’ll run you $58, which is standard pricing for such imports.

If you’re more of a Star Wars person, you can build a B-Wing, which also has some “articulation.”

The 1/72 scale vehicle will cost $35 and feature movable wings and rotating cockpit.

The micro-level details will require a very steady hand to build, but the result is more than worth it, with a level of authenticity you often don’t see often, even on much larger replicas.

Bluefin will be at booth 401 in San Diego. Expect both of these exclusives to sell swiftly.

Are you going to jump in that line? Let us know in comments.

HE-MAN’s Laughing Prince Adam Becomes a Comic-Con Exclusive Figure

Almost a decade ago, a remixed video using clips from the original He-Man and the Masters of the Universe animated series became a viral hit. In the video, He-Man‘s alter ego, Prince Adam, performed a cover of 4 Non Blondes’ “What’s Up?”, which led to the “Laughing Prince Adam” meme. At this year’s Comic-Con, Super7 is immortalizing that meme as an exclusive figure.

The Laughing Prince Adam action figure features a new head sculpt that recaptures the endlessly looped expression of joy. Adam is also getting a new pink power sword and rainbow glitter packaging. To get this figure, fans will have to venture away from the San Diego Convention Center and visit the Hordak’s Lair pop-up store at 701 8th Avenue. Hordak’s Lair will only be open on Wednesday, July 18 and Thursday, July 19, so expect to see long lines if you want to pick this one up.

YouTube user ProtoOfSnagem posted this video back in 2010, and it’s racked up almost 140,000,000 views. However, it was originally created in 2005 by a group of animators going by the name “Slackcircus.” You can find Slackcircus’ video, which has also has a breakdown on the history of the meme, here. Amazingly, the original video only has 1.7 million viewers since it was posted on YouTube in 2007.

It’s currently unknown if Super7 plans to release the Laughing Prince Adam figure after Comic-Con, but we suspect it will show up again at some point.

Are you going to brave the Comic-Con lines to pick up Laughing Prince Adam? Let us know what’s going on in the comment section below!

TRON-Style Iron Man Makes a Glowing Hot Toys Convention Exclusive

Iron Man is a toy company’s dream, because you can basically create any kind of new armor you want for him and it’s totally consistent with the character. Unlike, say, Batman, Iron Man’s not married to a style designed to hide in the shadows, and unlike Blue Beetle or Green Lantern, he’s not defined by any one color. And you know Tony Stark watches movies for inspiration. In the case of this newest Hot Toys figure, he’s been inspired by a fellow Disney-owned property.

Officially, this figure is called “Neon Tech Iron Man.” Unofficially, it’s “Totally-Tron-We-Just-Can’t-Call-It-That Iron Man.” And yes, he lights up.

It might be too blatant for him to come with a disc; even though Tron and Marvel could totally work out a deal under the Disney banner (look at what Kingdom Hearts just did), official licensing still costs more. But he has frickin’ lasers, people.

He also comes with two different sets of forearm armor and multiple hands.

Hmm, should we change his name to Tony “Sark”? Nahh, Sark was red. Which is Iron Man’s usual color, funnily enough.

This Iron Man figure will debut at Hot Toys’ flagship store in Shanghai Disneytown Lakeshore–Shanghai Disneyland being home to a Tron rollercoaster, of course–and at CCG EXPO 2018. You can probably expect him to show up at San Diego Comic-Con International and other summer conventions as well.

No price tag is specified yet, but like most Hot Toys, you can probably expect something in the $300 range. Totally worth it, though.

Is this Iron Man variant going on your grid? Let us know in comments.
