The Best Movies of 2018 So Far

We’re a little bit past the halfway point of 2018, and in spite of the swirling maelstrom of chaos currently consuming our planet, there have been a ton of excellent movies released this year. So while things outside can seem hopeless, there is still plenty of art being made and many reasons to be grateful for the brief respites that good cinema can offer. So on today’s episode of The Dan Cave, we’re celebrating the best movies of 2018…so far.

Editor’s note: The following movies are listed in order of release.

Black Panther

Image: Disney/Marvel Studios

The King of Wakanda’s first solo outing didn’t just smash box office records; it obliterated them. It didn’t just introduce the world to characters like Erik Killmonger, Okoye, Nakia, and Shuri; it created a cultural movement. And for good reason: writer-director Ryan Coogler didn’t just give us Soundcloud jokes, high-tech superhero battles, and armored rhinos; he gave us a meditation on imperialism, identity, and isolationism that you rarely seen in a blockbuster. It’s a superhero movie with brains AND brawn. And it wasn’t afraid to ask the toughest question of them all:

Paddington 2

Image: Warner Bros.

Legitimately the best movie of the year, Paddington 2 is an effervescent, heartwarming, and straight-up wonderful story of everyone’s favorite guileless bear Paddington, who winds up going to prison after being framed for the theft of a rare pop-up book by a villainous actor played by Hugh Grant, who is clearly having the time of his life. Easily one of the greatest sequels ever made, Paddington 2 is so impossibly sweet and pure that it’s hard to believe it exists in the cynical, brutal world in which we live. This one isn’t up for debate. Paddington 2 is mana from heaven. It’s chocolate and peanut butter. It is orange marmalade on toast. It’s just that good.

A Quiet Place

Image: Paramount

The first ten minutes of A Quiet Place are among the most anxiety-inducing and self conscious I have ever felt seeing a movie. That’s because every crinkle, crunch, and scrape of the straw reached deafening heights in contrast with the whisper-soft world John Krasinski created in A Quiet Place. Suspenseful, exceedingly well acted, and tense until the bitter end, A Quiet Place’s story of a family dealing with loss and trying to survive in a world overrun by murderous monsters will stay with you long after the credits roll. It’ll also make you realize just how quickly you would die in this world. For example, I would be killed no fewer than 7 times walking from my bed to my kitchen to get a glass of water at night.

Annihilation

Image: Paramount

With an exceptionally talented cast, trippy visuals, and the second-greatest bear to appear in a major motion picture in 2018, Annihilation is a mind-bending bit of cosmic horror with Lovecraftian undertones that forces us to question not only our own self-destructive tendencies and if what we’re seeing is really happening. With a nausea-inducing soundtrack, a pervasive sense of dread, and fresh horrors lurking around every corner, Annihilation is the feel-bad movie of the year. And one that you’ll be watching over and over and over again.

Avengers: Infinity War

Image: Disney/Marvel Studios

It’s hard to believe, but Marvel accomplished the impossible. No, I’m not talking about making a sizeable chunk of the Internet refer to Thanos as a thicc daddy. Or making us think about pagers for the first time in, conservatively, a decade. Or even remaining steadfast in their refusal to admit Hawkeye is dead as hell. Not, it’s because they managed to tie together plot threads from across 17 films to create a wildly ambitious piece of interconnected superhero storytelling. It felt like the cherry on top of a sundae made from a lifetime of loving comics, drizzled with cosmic hot fudge, and liberally sprinkled with the dust of every character I knew and loved.

First Reformed

Image: A24

Have you ever woken up one morning and wondered what the hell you’ve been doing with your life? And no, I don’t mean in an “Oh god, I ate my body weight in carne asada fries at 3AM” kind of way. An existential, soul-shaking sense of unease. That’s precisely what happens to a minister played by Ethan Hawke in First Reformed. With a megachurch down the road siphoning most of his flock, Hawke’s character experiences a dark night of the soul when he meets a pregnant parishioner and her extremist environmentalist husband. This may well be writer/director Paul Schrader’s best work since Taxi Driver, and it’s a case study in exactly what happens when you gaze into the abyss for too long. Spoiler alert: It gazes back. Gazes real hard.

Hereditary

Image: A24

Truly one of the most excruciating and rewarding experiences I’ve ever had in a movie theater, Hereditary tells the story of a family haunted not only by the loss of their grandmother, but by sinister supernatural forces. Toni Colette proves that she is an international treasure who must be protected at all costs with her stunning performance. Every frame of this movie is more unsettling than the last as this deeply uncomfortable family drama escalates into something truly terrifying. The less you know, the better because when every thing clicks, you’ll have an “ohhhhh” moment followed by an “OH NO” moment.

Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

Image: Focus Features

The world can seem like a dark and scary place but for decades, one man made it his mission to spread cheer, goodwill, and politeness to a generation of children. That man was Fred Rogers and there was a kindness and empathy within him that he felt compelled to share with the world through his TV series, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. With a deft blend of archival footage and interviews with the people closest to Rogers, this documentary serves as a much needed reminder that we could all stand to be a little kinder.

Sorry to Bother You

Image: Annapurna

In a surreal near-future version of Oakland, a black telemarketer named Cassius Green discovers the key to success in business: using a white voice. Overnight he becomes a massive success, raking in gigantic deals, climbing the corporate ladder and selling things that probably shouldn’t be, like his soul. Boots Riley’s directorial debut is a scathing satire of America, eviscerating not only the corporate rat race, but economic inequality, race, and so much more. It’s a relentlessly funny, frequently horrifying film anchored by a truly tremendous cast. And if you can predict the ending, then you’re a goddamn witch, and I also have questions for you about what lottery numbers I should choose because holy smokes did I not see that coming.

Eighth Grade

Image: A24

What Ladybird was for people who went to high school in the mid-2000s, Eighth Grade is for anyone who has grown up in the social media age. Comedian Bo Burnham’s directorial debut is an incredibly self-assured look at the anxieties and discomfort that come with growing up in an era where your every move is scrutinized, posted, dissected, retweeted, and shared on social media. It’s the story of 13-year-old Kayla, who is nursing a crippling social media addiction and trying to get through the final days of middle school. If you thought trying to decipher your crush’s away message on AIM was stressful, just wait until you see what Kayla goes through.

And those are the best films of 2018 so far. Which are your favorite? What would you add to this list? Let me know in the comments below.

Mezco’s Newest THOR: RAGNAROK Toy Is Hela, Good

Jeff Goldblum gained viral glory as one of the Thunder God’s antagonists in Thor: Ragnarok, but it was the other who was a true powerhouse: Cate Blanchett‘s Hela. A woman scorned and erased from the Asgardian narrative while her significantly less-powerful brothers got all the glory, she brought to the table a compelling motive, great and frightening powers, and the willingness to use them in a genocidal fashion. Unsurprisingly, the Hasbro Marvel Legends action figure of her was extremely popular, and commands anywhere from $50-$75 on the secondary market.

Enter Mezco. The One: 12 Collective rendition of Blanchett’s death goddess is also in the 6-inch scale, but with higher-end costuming and accessories; considering after-market prices, the $80 price tag on this one is reasonable. Packed with both the “antlered” head and the more goth-like long-haired version, this Hela also includes eight hands, two swords, and a display base.

Mezco already have an Arena Thor and Gladiator Hulk figure, so here’s hoping they continue. Valkyrie, Korg, and perhaps even a Grandmaster would be welcome additions to the line. We’d hate to even speculate what an in-scale Surtur would cost, but it’d be cool to see one anyway.

And while we’re on a female villain kick, how about a Hannah John-Kamen Ghost figure? Nobody’s announced one of those yet. A clear “phasing” variant would practically double-sell itself.

Somehow we think Hela would approve.

Are you going to add Thor’s bad sister to your shelf? Afraid she’ll smash your replica Mjolnir? Let us know in comments below.

How the OBI-WAN Spin-off Is Secretly Moving Forward

After Solo: A Star Wars Story came up short of its box office projections, a rumor swirled that Lucasfilm was backing away from the anthology films and putting them on hold. However, those reports weren’t backed by Lucasfilm, even though there isn’t currently another Star Wars movie planned beyond next year’s Episode IX. Unofficially, there are signs the long-rumored Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff is not only going forward, it may even be happening sooner than we expected. Today’s Nerdist News unleashes the Force to provide you the answers!

Join host and our resident nerf herder, Jessica Chobot, as she goes over a recent story in the Belfast Telegraph which casually mentioned that Lucasfilm is shooting the Obi-Wan movie there next year with Ewan McGregor reprising his role from the prequel trilogy. The report even specified the movie would take place during Obi-Wan’s years in exile.

The same newspaper reported George Lucas visited the area earlier this year to scout locations for the movie and personally sign off on them. That doesn’t sound likely, given that Lucas has been largely hands off since selling the franchise to Disney. Remember, one of the reasons Lucas did that was because he didn’t want to direct any more Star Wars movies.

The paper is reporting production will begin in April 2019.

Would you like to see Lucas return to direct the Obi-Wan spinoff movie? Let’s discuss in the comment section below!

UMBRELLA ACADEMY: HOTEL OBLIVION Finally Checks in This Fall

It’s been nearly a decade since Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá‘s last Umbrella Academy comic book, and it’s been an agonizing wait for new material. Way has promised the third miniseries, The Umbrella Academy: Hotel Oblivion, for several years, and now with the live-action Umbrella Academy Netflix series on the horizon, Dark Horse Comics has given Hotel Oblivion an official check-in time.

Via Entertainment Weekly (EW), Hotel Oblivion will be a seven-issue miniseries reuniting Way and Bá with inker Nate Piekos and colorist Nick Filardi from the first two Umbrella Academy series. The new story will pick up after the events of Umbrella Academy: Dallas, which left the team demoralized after they ensured the assassination of John F. Kennedy to save the world from nuclear annihilation.

For context, the Umbrella Academy is a group of former child superheroes who were adopted by an alien posing as an eccentric millionaire/adventurer. In their present, the team is comprised of highly dysfunctional adults, except for the time traveling Number Five, who still appears to be a child. When Hotel Oblivion begins, Number Five will working as a hired killer and Spaceboy (the man with the gorilla-like body) is in Tokyo attempting to find himself. Rumor, Seance, Kraken, and even Vanya/the White Violin will play a role in the story.

EW posted the first few pages from Hotel Oblivion, which you can read here. The first issue is set to hit comic book stores on Wednesday, October 3.

Bill Skarsgård Is Creeping Us Out in the New CASTLE ROCK Trailer

Last year, Bill Skarsgård terrified moviegoers as Pennywise the Clown in the theatrical adaptation of Stephen King‘s It. Later this month, Skarsgård is revisiting King country in Castle Rock, Hulu’s upcoming original series that will blend several aspects of the author’s famous novels into a new horror story. The latest trailer for Castle Rock has thrown the spotlight on Skarsgård’s new character, who is known only as “the Kid.” Someone locked him away deep in the bowels of Shawshank State Penitentiary, but there’s no record of his true identity and he doesn’t officially exist. If the following footage is any indication, it might be a good idea to keep this Kid behind bars.

The trailer also shines a spotlight on the main character, Henry Deaver (André Holland), an attorney who has returned to Castle Rock after several years away. There may be some deeper connection between Henry and the Kid, but so far, the Kid’s only offering enigmatic hints while the town falls prey to spooky omens.

Most of the story details are still under wraps, but the trailer does show off some of the series’ impressive cast, including Scott Glenn, Jane Levy, and Terry O’Quinn. Castle Rock‘s first three episodes will premiere on Wednesday, July 25. The remaining seven episodes of the first season will debut on Hulu weekly.

What do you think about the latest trailer for Castle Rock? Are you up for a deep dive into King’s fictional universe? Let us know in the comment section below!

CHRISTOPHER ROBIN Tickets Go on Sale with a New Trailer

Later this summer, Disney’s Christopher Robin will place Ewan McGregor in the title role as he gets reacquainted with his old friends from the Hundred Acre Wood. The latest trailer for the film replaces the emotional heartstrings of the first two previews with an uplifting and adventurous tone. What’s more, advance tickets for Christopher Robin have now gone on sale via Fandango and other outlets.

Disney also revealed that Pooh, Piglet, Tigger, and Eeyore have also been given their own emojis on Twitter, as you can see in the tweet below:

A whole new adventure with #Pooh, #ItsPiglet, #Eeyore, and #Tigger is right around the corner. Get your tickets today and see Disney’s #ChristopherRobin in theatres August 3: https://t.co/TVbZaZOgcC pic.twitter.com/wuj0LHsSFK

— Walt Disney Studios (@DisneyStudios) July 10, 2018

Agent Carter star Hayley Atwell is also appearing in this film as Evelyn Robin, Christopher’s wife. Of course, the focus is on Christopher’s relationship with his childhood friends, but perhaps Christopher Robin may pass on the legacy of looking after Pooh and company to his young daughter, Madeline Robin (Bronte Carmichael), or at least share the wealth.

In other stories, the main character’s reunion with the gang might be played up as a descent into madness. But Christopher Robin is setting us up for a far more joyous occasion, and we can’t wait.

Christopher Robin will be released on August 3.

What do you think about the new Christopher Robin trailer? Let us know in the comment section below!

Should HBO Delay the GAME OF THRONES Spin-Off Until After the Show Ends?

The Game of Thrones prequel could start filming this fall, and it might not be as set as far back in the past as we thought. On today’s Nerdist News Talks Back we discussed if this spin-off is happening too soon (in more ways than one), as well as Avengers: Infinity War‘s home release, the latest casting news for Star Wars, Spawn, and Spider-Man, and we also bid adieu to IHOB.

Dan Casey was in the big chair today, and he was joined by Bizarre States‘ Andrew Bowser, producer Jesse Gill, and Nerdist editor Kyle Anderson, and after they digested IHOP’s return to its normal name, they dug into the announced Infinity War home release. Are we going to get our own copy by snapping up a digital copy, or wait two extra weeks for the Blu-ray? What are we hoping to see from the extras? More humor? More Thanos? Or are we not that excited because we have reached Infinity War overload at this point?

There’s also been a lot of big casting news recently, including that Bill Dee Williams will return to play Lando Calrissian in Episode IX. How excited are we about this? Should it have happened sooner? What do we make of Jeremy Renner joining the new Spawn as Twitch? And who do we hope J.B. Smoove plays in Spider-Man: Far From Home?

Finally, a report say HBO will begin shooting its Game of Thrones prequel this fall in Belfast. Is this too soon considering the show’s final season doesn’t air until next year? Should HBO take more time before releasing a spin-off, or are they right to try and capitalize on their mega hit? Speaking of time, the same report also says the show will only be set 1,000 years earlier, which is much, much earlier than we have been told. Is this report wrong? Could they really compress Westerosi history that much, or is it actually that everything we think we know about the past of the Seven Kingdoms is wrong?

Nerdist News Talks Back airs live on our YouTube and Alpha channels at 11 AM PT every Monday through Thursday, and we end the week in pop culture with our hour-long Nerdist News What the Friday at 1PM PT, exclusively at Alpha. We’re here to hear from you every day, so we won’t miss the latest on the Game of Thrones prequel–whenever it happens.

Elon Musk Created a “Kid-Size” Submarine for Thai Cave Rescue

Editor’s note: This week’s  Muskwatch  was recorded prior to the latest updates in the Thai Cave Rescue story. As of Tuesday morning, all 12 members of the Wild Boars youth soccer team and their coach have been extracted from the cave, according to Thai navy SEALS . While the mini-sub devised by Musk and his engineering team was not utilized in the rescue mission, it was on-site and ready to be deployed should it have been necessary. The mini-sub’s continued development and transportation to Thailand was requested by Dick Stanton, one of the dive rescue mission’s co-leaders, according to a tweet from Musk.

Original article:

While Elon Musk has a tendency to make headlines for seemingly farfetched ideas like high-end flamethrowers, cyborg dragons, and launching sports cars into outer space, the billionaire entrepreneur has put his mind to devising a way to help rescue the group of boys trapped deep within a cave in Thailand. While rescue efforts were already underway, with eight of the 12 boys having been rescued prior to Musk’s intervention—Musk devised a plan to bring an enclosed metallic pod, which he referred to as a “kid-size submarine”, to help rescue the remaining cave-in victims. (Since the inception of Musk’s plan, the four remaining boys and their coach have indeed found their way to safety, thanks to Thai Navy SEALs.)

Over the weekend, a team of Thai Navy SEALS, international divers, and international experts—including a U.S. military crew—began a daring rescue operation to extract the Thai youth soccer team and their 25-year-old coach, who were trapped in the Tham Luang cave complex, that flooded as a result of heavy monsoon rains. In order to save the trapped boys, responders had to pass through 1.5 miles of narrow, flooded tunnels, passing through openings as narrow as three feet wide and two feet tall, according to The New York Times.  The rescue operation is incredibly dangerous and thanks to forecasts of heavy monsoon rains in the days ahead, the window of opportunity for rescue is rapidly dwindling. Case in point, Thai Navy Sgt. Saman Kunan, a former SEAL, died on Friday morning due to lack of oxygen while trying to make his way back to an underground command center.

In response to the crisis, Musk began working with engineers from SpaceX and The Boring Company to see if they could devise a way to assist authorities already on the ground. Their solution? An “escape pod” which two divers could use to transport the trapped boys through the underwater caves to the surface.

Simulating maneuvering through a narrow passage pic.twitter.com/2z01Ut3vxJ

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 9, 2018

On Twitter, Musk explained that the metal tube would be “[l]ight enough to be carried by 2 divers, small enough to get through narrow gaps” in the cave, and “extremely robust.” The roughly 6-foot-long device is outfitted with four oxygen ports and a nose cone designed to protect it from rocks that may otherwise damage the vessel. The device weighs approximately 90 pounds, which is light enough that a team of two divers should theoretically be able to carry it across the dry stretches of the arduous trek. In the video above, which Musk shared on Monday, engineers tested the device in a Los Angeles pool, maneuvering it through a simulated version of the narrow underwater passageway.

The odds are insane #ThaiCaveRescue pic.twitter.com/QvVTP7LS7T

— Colorful Nerds (@Ramon_Pesante) July 9, 2018

On Sunday evening, Musk announced that the mini-sub was on its way to Thailand, saying that it will be “hopefully useful,” but if not that it could have applications in future situations. For example, Musk also noted that with some modifications, the device has potential future applications as an escape pod for use in space missions.

In the end, it was the brave Navy SEALs that rescued the remaining children and coach from the cave; you can read more details over at BBC, who covered the whole story on the ground in Thailand.

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 8, 2018

In addition to Musk’s intervention in the Thai Cave Rescue, today’s Muskwatch is taking a look at the latest news from The Boring Company’s massive tunnel project in Chicago, the Tesla Model 3’s magical new “Summon Mode,” and the weird news that Elon Musk may, in fact, be a Juggalo. Watch today’s episode above to find out!

Did The Rock Really Make That Epic Jump in SKYSCRAPER? We Asked Everyone

Dwayne Johnson doesn’t just take on a bunch of bad guys in Skyscraper, he battles a literal building. Nobody doubts The Rock can successfully stop a team of world class criminals while simultaneously fighting the tallest tower ever built—obviously he can do that—but some skeptics question if even he has limits, because they aren’t convinced he really made the biggest jump in cinematic history. The Rock might appear invincible, but does he have both the strength and the heart to do the seemingly impossible? To find out if he pulled off the most epic leap ever we asked almost everyone we could think of.

And we really mean almost everyone.

When it comes to such an important moment in mankind’s history everyone has an opinion, from ESPN’s Michelle Beadle, to the WWE‘s Chris Jericho, to Skyscraper director Rawson Marshall Thurber, to hockey jersey enthusiast Kevin Smith, to comedian and Rock superfan Nick Mundy, to our own science expert Kyle Hill. But we didn’t stop there.

No this is so much bigger than that, so we also talked to stuntmen, VFX experts, former football coaches, an internet troll, one mom who knows a little too much about The Rock’s leg muscles. We even asked Dwayne Johnson himself! Well, uh, not the Dwayne Johnson, more of a Dwayne Johnson. But it wasn’t like we asked a frog…oh, wait we did that too actually. In fairness who knows more about jumping than a frog? It’s not like we can talk to a bean. We know because we tried.

So what did we learn from all of those expert opinions? What kind of consensus did we come to? Did he truly pull off the most majestic jump in movie history?

Let’s just say when it comes to The Rock, we’ll always take a leap of faith. But Nick Mundy should not take that literally.

Skyscraper springs into theaters on July 13.

What do you think? Can The Rock really pull this off? It’s just a short leap into our comments below to tell us what you believe.

Report: Billy Dee Williams to Return for STAR WARS: EPISODE IX

Billy Dee Williams was one of the few major cast members from the original Star Wars trilogy who didn’t have a part in The Force Awakens. And while Rian Johnson considered bringing Williams back for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, he was ultimately left out of that film as well. Now, Williams may finally be reprising his role as Lando Calrissian for Star Wars: Episode IX.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Williams’ Star Wars homecoming has been confirmed, although Lucasfilm has yet to make an official comment on the report. Rumors about Williams’ return were sparked when the 81-year old actor revealed that he was on a new fitness regimen. Williams also canceled his upcoming appearance at a comic convention while citing a conflict with his movie schedule.

Williams originated the role of Lando in The Empire Strikes Back, before taking an even larger role in Return of the Jedi. Since then, Williams has occasionally reprised his iconic part, most recently by voicing the character in Star Wars Rebels. Donald Glover portrayed a younger version of Lando in Solo: A Star Wars Story earlier this year.

In the aftermath of The Last Jedi, Lando’s return makes sense within the larger narrative. It’s unclear if Lando was involved with General Leia’s Resistance, but the final fates of Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and likely Leia herself will probably provide Lando the motivation he needs to once again accept a leadership role. That’s just speculation for now, but we’re eager to see how Lando’s new story plays out.

Star Wars: Episode IX will begin filming this summer, and it will be released on December 20, 2019.

Are you excited about Lando’s big comeback? Let us know in the comment section below!
