The Shattered Court is out tomorrow
It’s always nervewracking, the night before a new book comes out. The Shattered Court has been in my head for a long time, so it’s great that it’s finally out in the world for everyone else to enjoy to. Here’s a few glimpses of pics off my inspiration board for the world.
One last chance to pre-order here.

A Shattered Court song
I had a whole soundtrack for The Shattered Court but I think at least 75% of the book was written listening to Yellow Flicker Beat by Lorde on repeat. I do not even want to think how many times I’ve heard this song. Just as well it’s awesome.
Five more sleeps! Links to pre-order here.

Out and about – adventures at Crown
I caught up with one of my best friends last Friday. For various crazy schedule reasons we hadn’t seen each other in far too long. Our cunning plan was to find a restaurant and have a good natter but as fate would have it, the restaurant we tried only had a table for a short period of time so we found ourselves back out in the corridors of Crown (which is a big hotel/casino/entertainment complex in Melbourne) after admiring the petticoat lights and eating yummy food.
There wasn’t much on at the movies so we wandered up to the Spiegeltent which is currently there. The show playing there is Absinthe which is kind of sexy circus/cabaret/comedy/burlesque. I hadn’t heard of it but her mother in law had seen it and raved, so we decided to give it a go. And it was brilliant. The comedy is very rude, crude and un-PC but still very funny (really, do not go if you are easily offended) but the circus acts (acrobats and aerialists and high wire etc) and the burlesque (fire eating burlesque, people) were all breathtaking. Especially up so close (Spiegeltents are that big). Amazing stuff. Here are some pics.
After we emerged from Absinthe and admired the view from the roof for awhile
Then we ate cake, drank delicious upscale pear cider and admired the art in the swanky bathrooms.
After that Sophia Loren wandered past our table and we decided that was probably a sign that the night had peaked and toddled home. So there you go. Sometimes random nights are the best.

Urban sketching in North Melbourne
Last Saturday, I was getting close to finishing my revision but decided the brain needed an airing so I went along to the Melbourne Urban Sketchers.
Urban sketchers are basically people who like to sketch on location. You can find out more about them on their website or FB group. They have groups/chapters in lots of places around the world. One day I’d like to go to their annual Symposium. Though it seems to be usually held around the same time as Romance Writers of America’s conference. I have been to the Melbourne USK group a couple of times now. I am trying to go more often this year now that the writing schedule isn’t as crazy.
On Saturday Liz Steel and Paul Wang were visting from Sydney and Singapore respectively and gave a bit of a talk and demo before we all went and sketched around North Melbourne. (The group goes to different locations each time). I know Liz a bit (hers was one of the first blogs I found when I started getting into watercolors and was looking for info in Australia) and I’ve done a class with her and her online course and am generally a fan of her work. She’s also involved in Sketchbook Skool which I’ve blogged about before (new semester just starting up this week if anyone has a yen to try some sketching. All levels are welcome.)
Paul’s work is beautiful, I love the way he uses color, so it was great to see him work in person Because I am a dill, I somehow managed to take my watercolors out of the bag of sketching stuff I keep on hand which was a bit frustrating as I was dying to paint having not really touched a brush most of March while I finished Playing Hard. But I had my watercolor pencils at least, so did some experimenting with using those in different ways. Not sure the results are brilliant but it was interesting and hey, it’s all about trying stuff out.
So that was my latest art adventure. Hopefully the new semester of Sketchbook Skool (I’m doing the Stretching class) will bring about some more! And hopefully I’ll remember the paints!
